7:54pm: It seems that Williamson’s promotion will come with the expectation of regular at-bats. Giants president of baseball operations said prior to tonight’s game that the Giants are “committed” to giving Williamson an opportunity to play every day this time around (Twitter link via Pavlovic).
The San Francisco organization has cycled through seven left fielders already. Gerardo Parra, Yangervis Solarte, Tyler Austin, Mike Gerber, Connor Joe, Michael Reed and Brandon Belt have all seen action at the position. Parra, Solarte, Joe and Reed have all been designated for assignment (with Solarte being the most recent of the bunch, earlier this afternoon). On the whole, Giants left fielders have put together an astonishingly bad .162/.225/.223 batting line through 142 plate appearances.
9:13am: The Giants are slated to bring outfielder Mac Williamson back onto the MLB roster, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. He’ll join the club in Colorado today after launching three long balls last night in Sacramento.
Williamson was bumped from the 40-man roster late in spring as the Giants reorganized their outfield. He landed at Triple-A after clearing waivers. It was hard to argue with that decision at the time. Williamson had struggled last year after dealing with concussion issues and had never really run with his chances in the big leagues. At 28 years of age and out of options, Williamson ran out of time.
Circumstances have changed in the intervening month. There has been turnover already at the MLB level, in recognition of the fact that the Giants have one of the least-productive outfield units in the game. Williamson, meanwhile, has mashed at Triple-A. We’ve seen this act before, including a torrid stretch last year at the highest level of the minors (and, quite briefly, in the majors). But that doesn’t mean it isn’t intriguing. Through 98 plate appearances, he’s slashing .378/.459/.756 with nine home runs and a 13.3% walk rate.
This move likely would’ve been made sooner but for the fact that Williamson did not have a 40-man roster spot. But there’s not much to lose at this point, given the uninspiring output of several current players and the Giants’ cellar-dwelling status in the NL West.
SFGiants74
The article fails to mention that he continued his torrid pace when he was first called up. But, he continued the grand Giants tradition; he got injured. He came back to soon and never got back on track…Hopefully he will stick this time.
Jeff Todd
It was only six games, but I guess I can add that.
SFGiants74
The mind plays tricks when you get older. I thought it was longer. My bad…
Jeff Todd
All good. I actually did as well and had been surprised when I looked.
Frisco500
He was on a tear in SF before he almost broke his neck on that play in foul territory. Also, when looking at his age, it should be mentioned that he underwent TJ surgery in the minors which slowed his development.
sleepyfloyd
Oh please give it up. He won’t finish the team as a regular and most likely won’t even be on the team next year.
He’ll be 29 in July, how many guys become regular solid contributors at that age?
Jean Matrac
Roy Hobbs.
SFGiants74
Frank Robinson. He was considered washed up at the age of 30. Justin Turner has had a nice career.
MuleorAstroMule
Jose Bautista, after never posting an OPS+ over 99, broke out to a 162 in his age 29 season. Not saying Mac is Joey Bats but it’s not like the Giants have anything to lose by seeing if he can stick in the majors.
slash78
Nelson Cruz. He did that 10 years ago. His age 28 season (which he turned 29 that July) was his first full season. He turns 39 this July and is still crushing it.
Frisco500
Jose Martinez is a recent example. Had his first big season last year at age 29, and is off to a similar start in ’19.
Frisco500
Clearly Sleepy Floyd needs to stick to basketball.
snotrocket
Last chance big fella. Grab it and run with it.
22jclark
Yes, this is his last hurrah with the Giants. He needs to seize this opportunity. He deserves it, had a lot of setbacks. Hoping he can stay healthy and make it work this time
Deke
Hope this kid can pick up where he left off before he got injured. I also hope the Giants give him a long leash. The pressure on him must be huge given that this could be his last chance.
I Believe We Can Win
Well. Sounds like it’s time to bring back a old segment and start a new one
Bring back- making the case to be called up
Start a new segment called deserves to be demoted.
As a padres fan it may be time to demote lucchessi and give him some time to sort things out. Padres should call up estaban quiroz, the dude they got from Boston and see if he can hold down 2B.
jbigz12
3.59 FIP and 3.65 xFIP. I’m going to start a segment called “Be patient the bottom line results will eventually even out.”
I Believe We Can Win
Oh baseball is won by projections now a days not actual results? Oh wait no its not.
Lucchessi is giving up more hits more contact and all the other stats say there’s a few things he should figure out in AAA for a little bit. Hes only spent a total of 11 games between AA and AAA
Should have a “fangraphs for dummies” published for the likes of jb. It’s more than just pitching estimates.
jbigz12
He’s generating more grounballs, has the same walk rate is giving up less HR/9 then last season. He’s giving up 11% less hard contact than last year. The only thing that has slid is his K rate which is now 9 per 9 instead of 10.
If you’re going to try to act superior please at least have stats on your side. If you bothered to look at the fangraphs page it clearly tells the story of a guy who has had a lot more softly hit balls fall in for base hits. Which is why you ought to hold up and wait a little while where in all likelihood it will normalize. For a math teacher I’m quite disappointed.
jbigz12
Lucchesi
GB% 51% up 6%
Hard Contact Rate -~28% down from ~40% last season.
K/9- 9 down from 10
BB/9- draW
HR/9 ~1 – down from >1.5 last year.
XSlg, XWOBA, XSLG. 40 pts lower than actual.
Those expected figures would be lower than lauer, Margevicius and Strahm. Those estimates are based on his batted ball profile this season. He’s had more medium to softly hit balls drop in for base hits this year. Odds are that normalizes with time. As a math teacher you ought to be familiar with how that works.
njbirdsfan
Your whole routine is really getting old. Paddack is that you?
njbirdsfan
Btw I’m curious…are you a Padres fan, a math teacher and go to San Diego State? Why don’t you just put your SSN number in your username while you’re at it
MuleorAstroMule
FIP and xFIP aren’t “projections”. Depressing that a math teacher doesn’t understand this.
JayRyder
Well that was fast. Loving how Farhan does not wait. . . 3 homers last night! And Gerber was awful in Cincy. One double I almost called a homer. And then zero. . . Gerber probably has options. Mac is ready to go! Let’s do it. Colorado. Doesn’t hurt one bit. !
csspackler
I see the Giants as tinkering around the edges when the entire roster needs an overhaul.
SFGiants74
They’ve done a lot more then that.
Pickle_Britches
They also need to call up Austin slater, and move up Jalen Miller and Chris Shaw to AAA. Jalen Miller could develop into a 20hr/20steal type, that’s good for a 2nd basemen. Not too sure how his defense is??
LazyTeacher
You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about. Jalen Miller has done nothing to show he could be the 20hr/20steal type. He has not hit 20 HR nor has he ever had 20 steals in a season. I’ve watched him play an entire 2 seasons in the minors. His defense is horrible/sloppy: lazy plays, mediocre range, average arm, medium speed. He is also not exactly tearing it up at AA. Neither is Chris Shaw.
Pickle_Britches
I said he could develop into a 20/20 type, barely 100 abs and you see what he’s doing so far you freaking Jack n ape. He’s getting better as he advances up in the minors. Shaw’s k rate is down and walk rate is up. You obviously have no clue what your talking about.
LazyTeacher
Apparently basing an opinion on watching a player for two full seasons and looking at his numbers is nothing. You’d rather just have a pipe dream and base an opinion on your imagination. Please think BEFORE you reply..
Pickle_Britches
You don’t know what your talking about little fella.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Mac can hit 25 home runs and have a 0.230 average. Adjust for the home ballpark and while he is still below average, he may have a job on the Giants this year. Would like to see him get 300 at-bats even if he hit 0.210 with decent power, give him a chance to grow. Giants have nothing to lose right now, except more games.
LazyTeacher
Would you rather see a full season of Mac or Shaw? Seems like Shaw has way more upside.
SFGiants74
Shaw is weak defensively. He is more of a dh.
Pickle_Britches
How does Shaw have more upside? Dude ks too much, can’t hit of speed pitches. He’s put up avg stats in minors for his position. I can see him being traded to AL team where he needs to DH because his D is booty cheeks
trussell
The Giants also selected the contract Donovan Solano. Kratz is going to go but he’s IL. To make room for Donovan and Mac I’m guessing they’ll let go of Solarte and Venditte. Next I’m guessing Gerber if they bring up a pitcher. He’s only had 15 AB but struck out a lot in

biffpocoroba
Shaw’s minor league numbers at 1B weren’t bad; it was the Giants that wanted to force him into being an outfielder because of the long and ill-advised commitment they made to Belt. Shaw was showing improvement at the plate at the close of last season. I suspect that Zaidi is looking at moving several folks over the next two months, so it’s possible Shaw also gets another look this season on the big league club.
Pickle_Britches
What are you talking about Shaw getting better at the close of last season? The dude was 1 for 23 in his last 26 ab with 10ks. How is that showing improvement towards end of last year? Smdh.. another tool who just talks sideways with out facts to back it up
biffpocoroba
Pickle, I’m not sure what month you’re looking at. Shaw had 9 hits in 37 ABs in the second half of September, with four walks. Not gargantuan numbers, but nothing like your portrayal either.
Pickle_Britches
Look at fangraphs under game log, look at his last idk 7-8 games 25-26 abs. Not hard bro
Sabean Wannabe
Does Gerber have options?
xtraflamy
Welcome back, indeed!
5th inning, 2 for 3, 4 RBI so far. Also helped throw a runner out at home. Not going to be like this every night, of course, but what a showing to back the FO’s vote of confidence.
letimmysmoke55
good hes am exciting at bat
DougieJones
His were definitely the at bats I was looking forward to seeing most today. He just needs to avoid going into one of those crazy slumps he seems to fall into everytime he starts showing promise. I’m rooting for him though.
giantsguy41
Farhan additions include Connor Joe, Reed and Gerber. He DFA’d MAC Williamson and apparently Bochy had to fight hard to keep Pablo (one of giants rare positives this year). A little concerned with Farhan’s aren’t evaluation??
giantsguy41
*talent (not aren’t)
wiggysf
There have been ups and downs. Yeah plenty of his moves haven’t worked out, but he also got the Giants Gott, Bergen, Vincent, and Austin. It’s going to be a bumpy ride, cause our team is full of underproducing veterans, but Zaidi is slowly transforming the team.
jearbear_
Just gotta play the waiting game the next couple of seasons. I think Zaidi is going to make a pretty good team if we sell early this year.
rephaim
I have a serious question. When the Giant’s bring up Logan Webb, do you think they will give him Barry Bonds number?
trussell
Didn’t they retire Bonds number last year?
trussell
Duh. I just got it . And laughed
trussell
At the end of Spring Training I thought they should have let Mac go. Didn’t do well in ST and didn’t do well after his concussion. I want him to score many splash hits but am not confident he will do so. Gerber did well in Spring Training and he and Mac were neck and neck in AAA. 3 games for Gerber was definitely not a long look. For God’s sake our pitching. Bleeedddiiinnnngggg! Medic! Nurse! We need some new starters stat! Convert someone from the bullpen! (Vincent?)
rephaim
Speaking of openers, let Melancon start the first game of each series at home.. He will give up 40 runs in 4 innings. Thus exhausting the opposing team for the last two games of every series.
Yes folks, I am smarter than the average Yogi Berra.
