The Giants have optioned left-handed pitcher Andrew Suarez to Triple-A, tweets Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. His spot on the roster will go to right-hander Sam Coonrod, who has been recalled from Triple-A.
Suarez’s demotion comes after making just two starts for the Major League club, neither of which yielded particularly promising results. In ten innings of work this season, Suarez has conceded three home runs and ten earned runs while walking as many batters as he has struck out.
Of course, the 26-year-old Suarez is still young and relatively inexperienced, having worked just 170 1/3 career innings in the big leagues. Though the early returns for the 2019 season have been ugly, his rookie numbers were far more encouraging, suggesting that Suarez is at least worthy of consideration for a spot in the rebuilding Giants’ starting rotation. For the time being, though, his tryout for new president of baseball ops Farhan Zaidi will be put on hold and Suarez will head to the minors to iron out his issues.
As Baggarly notes, it appears that Suarez’s absence will clear the way for Dereck Rodriguez to reclaim his spot in the rotation. However, that is not certain; Tyler Beede is another candidate to replace Suarez in the rotation. Rodriguez, for his part, has not enjoyed much more success than Suarez in 2019, but after a brief stint in the minors he could be given the chance to show that his rookie success was no fluke. Sam Coonrod, meanwhile, will pitch out of the bullpen as he makes his Major League debut.
Coonrod, a fifth-round selection of the Giants in 2014, is a 26-year-old right-hander who began working out of the bullpen in the minors last season after beginning his professional career as a starter. Coonrod has played at the Triple-A level in 2019, pitching 18 innings in as many games, striking out 30 batters and walking 11. Though his 7.00 ERA is unsightly, his peripherals are considerably more impressive and point to MLB-caliber stuff.
antibelt
Had a bad game, but don’t like the message it sends. One bad start if you’re a rookie and you’re gone. Meanwhile, shark and Pom “I can’t throw 4 innings” stay in the rotation. Have to give these guys a longer leash.
sabermatrix
I mean Suarez had an era of 6 even at AAA, so it’s not surprising.
nmendoza7
He honestly just needs the opener, he struggles in the first and minor a homer bug, he’s effective from then on anyway.
schellis 2
I would imagine that the 2nd would give him just as much issue as the first since it would still be his first inning
sleepyfloyd
That makes no sense. So you want to pitch him and avoid the first inning? Yeah real smart
jorge78
So they bring up a guy with an 8.00 ERA in AAA…..
sacball
Suarez isn’t a rookie
higherandtighter
Zaidi is going to make damn sure everyone knows the cupboards are bare.
BondsAway
In the past I would agreee with you, but I’m changing my views on this. FO & Bochy need to stop coddling these guys. And its not just 1 game, dude had been getting crushed in the minors too. And the message it sends is if you don’t perform we’re going to find someone that will. I mean what’s wrong with that, if I don’t perform at my job they will find someone that will. Alot of of these other MLB teams are calling up kids that are 19, 20, 21 years old and the Giants are calling up these 25 to 29 year olds that aren’t getting the job done. Why sit around and delay the inevitable, dude just can’t play at this level, Mac Williamson is a perfect example. I am not saying that I am right, and you are wrong, just my opinion.I applaud Farhan on this, Saurez & Mac have had multiple opportunities to step up and they’re not 21 years old, they’re on the wrong side of 20. So it sends the message, when my time comes I better step up
antibelt
Actually, Suarez and Mac 2 different categories. Williamson has had multiple opportunities and never performed. Suarez did perform admirably as a rookie last year. Led rookies with innings pitched and starts. He was on the IL recently, and is just back from it. This was his third start back. Baseball is very streaky, and simply one poor start isn’t always indicative of a players ability.
Frisco500
Colby, I agree. Better step up when your number is called. No excuses.
Jean Matrac
Actually it’s two bad starts, not one. It’s not a bad message at all. You can’t look at it like being sent down is punishment. The minors are about instruction, and the majors are about producing. They aren’t giving up on Suarez, otherwise he would be released. AAA gives him the opportunity to work out some issues without the worry of producing. I think Zaidi is doing the exact right thing.
antibelt
Quality start is defined as at least 6 innings and 3 or less runs. He gave up a 2 run homer after 5 2/3 his last start. So no, not two bad starts.
Baytown
I’m beginning to like Farhan less and less as times go on.
sleepyfloyd
And your theory is why? He was left with a crap team, roster, farm.
He’s basically punting this year to get rid of whatever he can.
gmenfan
WAAAAAYYYYY too early to judge. Hes still sorting through the mess that Evans and Sabean left.
Baytown
I get that, but I also used to razz Dodger fans about all the changes they made. I’m not liking what I perceive as breaking down the cozy feeling the players used to have when they joined a ‘family’ atmosphere. Now, they are just another piece of meat.
Shastafan
Personally, my perception of this team for several years now is the coziness is a real problem. How can one explain and justify the large and fully guaranteed contracts we are now buried with.
Why do we continue to start players that are past their prime vs. younger players that could be the future. SFG have become the MLB version of an assisted living facility.
Central Valley
I will always be a Giants fan, but what their last GM, Bobby Evans, did to this team by signing older, unproductive players to expensive, long term, non tradable contracts, is going to haunt this team for at least 5 years.
They play with little passion and look very old, tiresome and out of shape. It’s like those that got their contracts are only showing up for a paycheck. Not one player on this team gives the fans anything to look forward to. No future All Stars. Their drafting, scouting and player development departments are horrendous.
I don’t blame Zaidi, but he’s got one hell of a mess on his hands. Trade everyone to get younger and more athletic. I feel for Bochy, seems like a great man. I appreciate what he’s done for the game of baseball.
sacball
Thank you!! Everyone LOVES to blame Zaidi for everything he’s done, but he’s working with the disaster that he was left with.
Central Valley
Exactly! It’s going to take time.
So. Cal. Giants fan
I completely agree with the lack of passion shown by this team. Last week Longo watched three fastballs go right down the heart of the plate without making an effort to at least foul the third one off as protection. He walked back to the dugout like it was no big deal. What happened to the “swing at anything close” mentality? Buster is a also complete disappointment. He plays with zero passion. I thought he was supposed to be the leader of the team? Lost all respect when he stood at the plate while Strickland and Harper were involved in fisticuffs! Yes, Strickland is a head case, but he is still your teammate and you have to support him regardless IMHO. I recall when Eli Whiteside jumped up and tackled Polanco when Ramirez plunked Viscaino. I hope the Giants keep MadBum because of his passion and desire to win each and every day!!
antibelt
Trust me, when you’re being paid 162 million, the last thing your team wants is to you to get in a scuffle for a guy that eventually was released for breaking his own hand. That brawl also cost us our left fielder btw.
rephaim
Antibelt,
To call Mike Morse “our left fielder” is a stretch of the imagination. Morse was injured in the collision with Samardzija because both players thought they were going to get some of the Nationals. Sorry but Morse should have kept his head up when rampaging like a crazed bull. He got hurt because of his own stupidity. Morse was never a left fielder by any stretch of the imagination. This is the truth about “The legend of Mike Morse.”
Buster Posey’s lack of action, (all catcher know they are to protect the pitcher) shows either one or two things. complacency or cowardice. Either is unacceptable. Having Posey as the de-facto leader or captain of this team has been a disaster. The day will come when true Giants players will tell the truth. Posey lost a great deal of respect in the clubhouse for not protecting his pitcher. during this scuffle. You don’t hear this now because he is Bochy’s pet and he is the face of the franchise. The criticism is coming, for this singles hitter who can’t drive in runs, and has no fire to compete.
Bart will be here next year and Posey won’t have Bochy to babysit him any longer.
antibelt
You are obviously not from the Bay, because you would know many people did not care for Strickland. He was a hothead. Posey led this team to three World Championships, and has played the game with class. He’s a role model for kids to let them know you don’t have to classless to get respect.
So. Cal. Giants fan
Antibelt,
You sound worse than Bochy trying to come up with excuses for the performance of an underachieving team. When is the last time a baseball player actually broke any bones during a scuffle, of course unless you’re Strickland and decide to punch a locker. They don’t punch, but instead wrestle until the melee knocks them to the lawn. I didn’t hear anyone complain when MadBum attempted to fight Puig and the benches cleared. I believe he is also a million dollar player, along with so many other players who have been involved in scuffles.
What I am saying is Posey had an obligation and opportunity to intervene and show he is the leader of “his” team and prove that if any opposing player was going to charge a teammate, they would have to go through him. Instead, he stood at the plate and did NOTHING! Do not get me wrong, Mr. Posey was a great player. However, I do not believe he shows the passion or desire to be a leader whether he wins or losses Leaders are supposed to lead by example and every other teammate will follow. However, right now, he like many others on this team, appear to be going through the motions and can’t wait for the season to be over. It is sad considering the season isn’t even at the halfway point.
antibelt
Strickland beaned Harper based on a personal vendetta from two years prior. It was immature. He wants to pick a fight, then he can fight his own fights. The fact Strickland broke his hand hitting a wall tells you all you need to know about him.
sleepyfloyd
You have no idea what you speak of. The Giants won championships because of poseys great leadership.
He didn’t help Strickland because the team was sick of his schtick. Plus no need to get injured with his history.
rephaim
Antibelt and Sleepy Floyd,
First, I attended 21 Giant games last year. I flew in from Cairo and saw games in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. While it is true I am not from the Bay area, I have been a fan of the Giants since 1959. During the second half of 2016, it became woefully obvious that this core had hit the wall. Whether it was injuries (Panik, Belt, Pence, Posey) or complacency (Crawford) the truth was written two and one-half years ago. The loss of Lincecum and the struggles of Cain along with Bochy’s stubborn reluctance to cut the old players loose and use young kids led to this mess. Add in Sabean, Baer and Evan’s biased view of their talent and you have the perfect storm. A fan does not have to be from the bay area to be a fan.
Gentlemen, it is obvious that neither of you has played at a competitive level. It is an unwritten rule that a catcher always protects his pitcher. As stated above baseball fights are closer to dancing or wrestling. Furthermore, the catcher always defends his pitchers, whether he likes their actions or not. Two reasons……One, a catcher has a mask and padding. I have never seen a catcher get hurt in a fight. Two, a second unwritten rule is that a pitcher must protect his hitters. Believe me, if Posey had been hit by a pitch, it would be expected that any Giant pitcher would at least come in high and tight to send a message.
I could care less that Strickland had a vendetta or was out for a Sunday stroll. The truth is that Posey did not do his job. The truth is in a competitors eyes, Posey lost the trust of his pitching staff. When things are falling right it is easy to do the right thing, but it is how you play the game when things are tough that matters. Things are tough since 2016 and Buster Posey has not stepped up. Nor has Crawford, Belt or Panik. All four won’t be with the Giants two years from now. Unfortunately, it will take that long to find young hungry competitors to make the Giants a team again. This is a group of individuals all resting on their laurels. The contracts they all received were probably justified. Still, as a fan, I expect the Giants to play hard even if they are not talented enough to win.
antibelt
First, don’t pander to me that you’ve been to 21 games. I have season tickets and often travel with the team. Second, no one is resting on their laurels. I’ve heard this on this thread often. These guys work extremely hard, even if the results don’t show. My whole point is that if we are going to rebuild, then let the prospects work through their issues, and not just jettison them. That’s not how you evaluate players. As far as Posey, a catcher did get kicked in a brawl about five years ago and had to retire. And no, you don’t have to defend the actions of a hothead. That’s a stupid message to send to kids watching the game.
rephaim
If, as you say, you travel with the team, then some of baseball’s unwritten rules must have rubbed off on you. ???? If Don Drysdale had hit Willy Mays in the ribs with a fastball, what would Juan Marichal do in return? Don’t pander to me Mr. Antibelt. You know the answer to the question.
As congenial as Tim Lincecum was, how many opposing pitchers dared throw at a Giant batter during his reign of terror? And yes, when Lincecum was bringing it at 98 mph very few dug in deep.
The game has rules. An overrated punk wants to stand and admire his home runs., He should have been plunked the very next at bat. Don’t talk to me about the message sent by Posey to kids.. Posey didn’t have the testicular fortitude to simply step in front of Harper and guide him to first base. The message sent by Posey is exactly what you don’t want to teach your kids. Even a “sheepish”. Posey was hesitant to respond after the incident.
I’ll give Posey the benefit of the doubt. Knowing that Strictland studied martial arts, maybe he just wanted to see Harper get his behind kicked? He certainly had a good view from behind home plate. Bochy should have spoken for his pet gerbil when Posey was at a loss for words. Team Leadership 101..
I can see you and I view competition in different ways. Maybe I’m just an old goat and you are a spineless millennial?
So. Cal. Giants fan
Posey lead this team to the titles? What games were you watching? Yes, he contributed, but he was far from being the team’s leader IMHO. In 2010 he was a rookie and Aubrey Huff was the leader, along with Edgar Renteria, Juan Uribe, Pat Burrell, and even Freddy Sanchez. But Lincecum and Cain, along with the bullpen being lights out, showed more leadership. But the biggest leader was Cody Ross!
In 2012, pitching again lead the way, along with timely hits by Pablo Sandoval and Marco Scutaro.
In 2014, it was the Bumgarner show that lead the way!
I agree that Buster contributed, but I certainly don’t recall any significant plays defensively or game winning walk off home runs from him.
We are getting a tad off base to my original point. I merely pointed out that IMHO, I don’t see Posey as being the team’s leader. He rarely shows emotion and enthusiasm required to being the team’s leader. Bumgarner is the emotional leader which is why I hope he remains a Giant for life.
trussell
Antibelt, totally agree re Strickland. Why would or should ANY player risk their body to ‘support’ a headcase like Strickland. Look where it got Morse. I’ve been to 9 games so far this season and because tickets are so cheap I’ve been within a row or two of the Giants dugout. Saying they don’t care and are just collecting paychecks isn’t what I’ve seen on their faces. You can see their faces drop further and further down with each at bat. Longoria and Belt probably look the most frustrated of all as they make the walk of shame back to the dugout. I believe we have the oldest team in baseball and it shows but I don’t think it’s for lack of caring.
DougieJones
I don’t think Zaidi has a clue what he’s doing. I think he makes so many moves that he happens to get lucky every once in a while.
Central Valley
I have disagree my friend. He’s doing exactly what he needs to do. Keep trying to find talent and hopefully someone sticks. All the while not spending any money.
DougieJones
He’s made 61 transactions in May. That’s probably a few too many IMO
rephaim
Well, two of those transactions are Bochy’s fault. Bringing back the “spineless one” MacAss Williamson and having to DFA him a second time was done because Bochy felt sorry for this choke artist. “I should have given him some consistent at bats.” Well, the last 8 for 9 were consistent Boch, Eight strikeouts while leaving 15+ runners on base. Glad to see this ‘no testicular fortitude’ clown gone. Now when can we send the diapered, under 500 win percentage, dementia riddled, nursing home caretaker to Cooperstown?
Gobbysteiner
Dude. Shut up. No one wants to hear your annoying whining.
Baytown
You and I are the lone wolfs on this Cooper.
rephaim
Sorry Gobbler,
I truly didn’t mean to offend a Mac Williamson family member. “Dude” surfs up.
Gobbysteiner
More talking about what you said about bochy you disrespectful clown. Lol @ you thinking dude is said by only surfers. Maybe get out of your retirement home sometime and you’ll realize that it’s common vernacular nowadays.
Pickle_Britches
Suarez needs more starts. Sending a player down after 1 bad start isn’t the route to go. Last year he pitched half way descent and was consistent for the most part. Pomeranz and Holland need to go. Derek Rodriguez needs to be long relief. His stuff isnt that great and has a weak FB. His control is what saves him from being terrible. Hes another Y petit type. Beede and Suarez needs to get the ball every 5
Sadler
It wasn’t one bad start. He was terrible in spring training and has been terrible in AAA this year. He needs to be in the minors where he can work on things; not in the majors getting lit up.
Pickle_Britches
Hes a better option than Pomeranz/holland/blach/Rodriguez so….
rephaim
Pickle,
I have to agree with some of what you say. Exclude Rodriquez who actually has some fire in his belly. Holland should have been DFA’d the minute he opened his mouth, complaining about being relegated to the pen. Blach doesn’t have the stuff to pitch in the majors. Why they brought Pomeranz into the rotation is a large blank stare. Pomeranz was toast five years ago.
Pickle_Britches
Yes i agree rephaim…I just think Rodriguez’s stuff isnt that great. He reminds me of Jason Marquis. I think Beede has the most upside if he could figure it out. He’s filthy nasty.
On a side note i watched a guy named Connor Menez fron their aa affiliate in Richmond and he looked real good. LH pitcher FB- 91-96 good change and slider, threw a few curves that looked descent too. Good control. Im thinking he could be a good #3-4 starter.
rephaim
Hey Pickle,
You read my mind. After posting the above, I went to Richmond’s individual stats. I like what I am hearing about Menez. Let’s also hope that Logan Webb comes back from his suspension as a real pitcher. The drug violation can be caused by numerous supplements, but Webb should have cleared everything with the training staff prior to using anything.
I agree that Beede has great stuff, unfortunately, the stuff between his ears seems to be lacking.. As for Rodriquez, I have to pull for him. I couldn’t break a pane of glass in school. But, my crazy coach kept sending me out there until I learned to stop walking people and to keep the ball down. Of course, with today’s swings all being launch angled up, I might be in trouble.
Pickle_Britches
Yea i was bummed when i found out about Logan Webb, i was really pulling for him to be getting his shot later this year, but i doubt it now with this suspension.. I just hope that some of these promising young arms pan out, and they draft well this year. They need some good luck in the draft this season bad.lol
Jean Matrac
Expecting guys to get better with more MLB starts is the wrong way to go about it. The minors are about instruction, working on problem areas, and getting better. MLB is about producing. There’s far more pressure at MLB than AAA, which is not at all conducive to getting better.
Pickle_Britches
Well when the team has no chance of making it to playoffs whats so ever, then they should making their starts at the big level with the big level instructors and let them get used to the big stage, work through their nerves and give them a chance to see if they are going to be apart of the future at big league level, or be a career aaa player
rephaim
Absolutely!
Crankyolddude
Suarez actually had a quality start in his first appearance of the season, and while his outing yesterday wasn’t the best, he was likely only sent down because he has options and the Giants need a fresh arm in the bullpen. He’ll be back before long…
Jean Matrac
While 6 IP with 3 earned runs is technically a quality start, the fact that he walked 4 guys, and gave up 2 HRs would suggest that is not the kind of game anyone would be happy about.
antibelt
If you saw the game, you would see he was actually more crisp than the numbers suggest. He needs to be able to work through his problems at the big league level. Point of a rebuild is to get prospects experience.
Pickle_Britches

Baytown
With Farhan in control you can forget the concept of ‘chemistry’.
hummm babyyyy
Chemistry is created with winning and this team won’t be winning anytime soon.
DougieJones
Winning no doubt helps chemistry but familiarity and comfort with teammates is necessary. At the very least knowing your teammates names. Zadhi is making it difficult with the musical chairs game he’s playing.
Baytown
No doubt he has to look at the ‘inventory’ but it is becoming a little silly. I thinking ADHD here. IMO he should be spending a little more time figuring out the draft and who to trade for than loitering around the waiver wire.
DougieJones
Hopefully he is focusing his time on the trade deadline/draft and this nonsense is just something to do when his brain wanders (frequently). Maybe he gets lucky with a few of these but we certainly don’t have to enjoy what he’s doing. I don’t think anyone on the team is. Austin has been a solid pickup.
What bothers me most is that he’s basically picking at the scab that is the Giants without making any significant moves.
Baytown
Farhan has talent and a good chuckle, but I’m nervous. With Boch gone, a saber cat with an impulsive enchantment with phone calls and trades, and I sure hope not a new nerd manager, this could be painful for some time to come. Honestly, it’s way more Evans fault for getting the team to this point, but I’m not yet convinced Farhan’s the man to save the ship.
qturner
In today a loss to Dbacs, SF literally looked like the Keystone Kops.

Everyone that keeps saying Saurez pitched good except that last third of inning 5 needs to stop. Dude had a terrible game. It doesn’t matter that “if it wasnt for that last hr, he’d of been fine.” Thats like me satlying I would have been a millionaire, if I had just picked those powerball #s correct last friday. Well I didnt, just like Suarez didnt get thru that last inning. Why did he have runners on base. If he was doing so well, why were runners always on base. SF’s fringe guys are in there late 20s. I agree with comments about SF players effort. It is lackluster at best. There players have no fight in them. They’re soft. At least act like u care guys
Pickle_Britches
40 rodger…
BondsAway
Agree 100%. I thought it was blasphemy to blast Buster. He has underperformed for years. Hasnt had a 20 hr year in 5 years. And he’s the best singles hitter in the world….when bases are empty. He is mentally soft & has no fight in hum
Pickle_Britches
Buster is trash now. He looks sluggish at the plate. His numbers weren’t from being hurt, he just lost it. He dont have what it takes to be an All-star type player anymore. Eric davis played hurt everyday, i remember seeing a thing on him that his teamates would have to help him up after game in locker room, help open stuff up for him, carry things for him cause he was too hurt and sore, but his numbers and his on the field actions you couldn’t tell he was hurt. Posey is just done and all the Giants fans need to know that. I give him 2 years and hes toast
sleepyfloyd
That’s fine but you are an idiot thinking his production would continue the same as his all star years given his wear and tear and results of his previous leg injury.
BondsAway
I don’t understand the idiot comment. This isn’t a discussion on who or how well certain athletes perform after an injury. Most athletes have been injured at one point or another. This discussion is about performance. And nobody said “I expected Buster to be great after leg injury.” So ur comment is very rando & has nothing to do with anything anyone in here was talking about. And btw, Buster won the MVP after he had major surgery. So ur comment contradicts what ur even saying. Whose the idiot now?
Pickle_Britches
Buster hasnt been good for 2 years now. so at the age of 30 which is not that old he started his decline. Just face it hes a poor mans Mauer. 2 years from now he will be grabbing pine making a shat load of money. Just another bad contract signed by the giants.
So. Cal. Giants fan
I agree with your assessments, however; others on this website believe we shouldn’t have an opinion.
Pickle_Britches
opinion? Sorry to break the news to ya little fella, check the back of Poseys Topps ball card, you’ll see the decline starting for yourself, and also check mlb.com and see what hes doing right now. Lets just hope he stays at catcher because if he moves to 1b, expect the worst numbers at that position in all of MLB.

It is with great humility that I must apologize to our Diapered Manager., For the past two and one-half years, I have been claiming that the smell emanating from the dugout has been Bochy’s diapers. It is now clear that the smell emanating from the bench is the rotting carcasses of our core players. I have done all that I can, I have even tried to freshen them up by sprinkling them with my holy water. Nothing smells as bad as a decaying superstar and the final three years of money due on his contract.
However, I do have one thing to ask. Will anyone complain if I sink my teeth into Hensley Muelens rear?.I have to admit, I bit Bobby Evans this morning.

My dog read your comment and left you a surprise in your sneakers this morning. “Beware of the dog!” I realize how sensitive you are. I haven’t even brought out Phil my donkey yet. But he has requested that the Giants install a pole on top of their dugout for your viewing pleasure. Watching Phil dance will certainly be more entertaining than watching this group of geriatrics pretend to play baseball.
Gobbysteiner
Are you trying to be funny or what. I’m confused.
hummm babyyyy
Can’t wait for all these contracts to be off the books. Longoria has what three more years after this year? Gonna be a long 3.5 years.
BondsAway
Longoria has been a joke. It’s hard to believe he used to put up big numbers. Complacency is what seperates the great ones from the ones that do great for a few years & then tank. The great ones have that cut throat mentality & competive spirit that wont let them get complacent. Their attitude supercedes facts. Example: Longoria has said how baseball will humble you & it is so hard to consistantly put up big #’s. And he’s right, those are facts. But having that attitude where u agree with fact, isnt good for athlete. Conversely, the great ones, the ultra competive kind. They understand the facts. Hitting a baseball is very hard. Putting up big #s for 10+ years is very rare. But instead of having Longoria’s attitude & conceding to the facts, they have attitude. Barry Bonds mentality is: F*** the facts, Im Barry F****** Bonds & those facts dont apply to me…So to Barry, attitudes are greater than facts. Longoria: Facts are greater than attitude
