The Braves received a scare tonight when left-hander Max Fried was struck on his left hand/forearm by a comeback liner off the bat of Alex Verdugo. Fried attempted a pair of warmup tosses with a trainer on the mound following the play but exited the game rather than continuing forward. Thankfully, the initial x-rays on the young lefty came back negative, as J.P Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group tweets. Fried has been diagnosed with a contusion and is considered day-to-day for the time being.
It’s excellent news considering that even after being charged with four runs in an inning of work tonight — one of which scored after he left the game and another two of which came home on a play that could’ve been ruled an error — Fried is sporting a 2.97 ERA with 7.8 K/9, 1.8 BB/9 and a 52.6 percent ground-ball rate in 39 1/3 innings of work.
Here’s a bit more on the Braves…
- The Braves will discuss the possibility of utilizing left-hander Sean Newcomb as a reliever moving forward, manager Brian Snitker told reporters Tuesday (link via Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution). Snitker specifically praised Newcomb’s aggressiveness in a recent relief outing that saw him toss a pair of scoreless innings, though for now it seems clear that the discussion is in its early stages. Newcomb voiced a willingness to pitch in that role if it’s what the organization deemed best, noting as well that the decision isn’t really up to him. The 25-year-old was one of the Braves’ best starters for much of the 2018 campaign before slumping through much of the season’s second half. Atlanta’s pitching staff has been in a state of flux all season after a quiet winter in terms of pitching additions.
- There’s still no timeline for Darren O’Day’s return to a big league mound, writes David O’Brien of The Athletic as part of a larger look at the Braves’ bullpen (subscription required). The organization is hopeful that the veteran righty, acquired in last July’s trade for Kevin Gausman, will finally make his Braves debut at some point this summer, but to this point there’s nothing more concrete than that vague target. O’Day was sidelined with a hamstring injury at the time of that trade and was included in the swap largely because of the remaining money on his contract, though the Braves surely hoped he’d be an option for them in 2019. Instead, he’s been sidelined to this point by a forearm strain that appears to be progressing slowly. The 36-year-old had a terrific 2012-17 run with the Orioles and had a 3.60 ERA with a 27-to-4 K/BB ratio through 20 innings prior to last season’s injury. He’s earning $9MM in 2019 — the final season of a four-year, $31MM contract.

kluber was diagnosed with a contusion at first too

By whom?

Thank you Dr Marcus Welby

Turner is on ABSOLUTE fire this series… Dodgers always seem to have the Braves number even machodo-less.
It’s like a broken record, beat up on the marlins, play good against the division rivals to get the confidence up, and then go out west only to realize you’re just a mediocre team with flashes of goodness.
Worst news is finding out having Joe simpson back in the booth wasn’t a good luck charm. Ugh
thekid9
Turner? Article has nothing to do with Turner. Is this Turner’s mother?
RunDMC
Were the Dodgers pre-game attire to Joe’s liking this time?
Guy needs a corner booth in a diner to sort his gripes with the new millennium.
chippahawk
Or does the new millennium…
nwwh
No.

Joe’s gone
samthebravesfan
At this point, I’ve just given up. It would legitimately shock me if the Braves ended up contending for a playoff spot. I’m already hoping that they get a fielder prospect for Donaldson.
Zach725
Seems kinda early to write off a team that is .500 with 120+ games to go.
johnrealtime
Especially when youre only 2..5 back in the division. Young teams will have bad games. Have patience (i’m not a braves fan), they will compete
samthebravesfan
It’s kind of hard to have patience when you see the same things for years. I know that it’s illogical to do that, but I’m not a completely logical person even though I try to be on most things.
allthingsatl
Logic has been extinct in Atlanta since the 1996 World Series
samthebravesfan
I am a very pessimistic person. All I see is the pitching staff is garbage or hurt and that negates their good offense.
purplesteve6
I agree to some extent, but when you watch them everyday, they don’t have the feel of a winning team. There aren’t even too many glaring holes (well, besides the bullpen, which has been slightly better lately)… The sum of it all just doesn’t feel like enough. It’s disappointing. The front office took the approach that maturity and maturity only was the way the team was going to take a step forward. Instead, it’s been a step back.
It’s definitely not Snit. I just hope that he’s not given the blame when they’re 80-82 at the end of the year.
samthebravesfan
Funny. I say 84 wins.
efax0977
I don’t know how someone can say it’s not Snit with a straight face. Dude is a horrible manager.
efax0977
Sadly the Braves will always be mediocre, unless Liberty Media sells. And that would just be the start of what needs to be done. AA needs to be fired. Our manager should always have an H substituted for the N in his name. Freddie is in the top 3 of most overrated players in the game. Team needs a culture change, there was a spark there last year that isn’t there this year. As much as we may have hoped, we knew they really had no chance in the playoffs, but it was a fun team. It’s not there this year, so Freddie can say oh we are right at .500 all he wants and we haven’t hit our stride, whatever Freddie sell that bag of rocks some other place.
Freeman:
1 – 100 rbi season
1- 30+ homer season
2 – +.500 SLG seasons
0 – 100 walk seasons
6 – 100+ SO seasons
Prolific and prolonged slumps (usually at least 2 long slumps every year) where he can’t hit a beachball.
Rarely gets a runner to 3rd with 0 out and doesn’t come through that often with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 out.
He’s overrated
efax0977
Correction on SLG should have been .550
WarkMohlers
This is a very dumb statement. It is bad and you should feel bad.
You literally pulled your baseline stats in judging Freddie out of nowhere. What is your comparison based off of?? Joey Votto mixed with Robocop?
black69
Agreed. This statement is total, baseless trash.
AtlSoxFan
What can you expect from someone who wants a guy’s name changed from Brian to Briah?
hiflew
Ridiculous. All you have to do is look at his BR page and see that his most similar comparison for EVERY year of age so far is Hall of Famer Eddie Murray. I don’t think I have ever seen any player with such a similarity to any player, let alone a HOFer. If anything, Freeman is underrated on the whole.
realgone2
Stupidest comment I’ve seen on here in a long time. Congrats.
DTD
You’re opinion is absolute trash minus the liberty media comment, total stupidity
efax0977
You mean your right not you’re cause you are opinion is just absolute trash when it comes to English. Trash sums you up very well
Rexall64
You obviously know exactly nothing about baseball
jonnymac2for1
Don’t post something like this when a team has 120 games to go and 2 1/2 games out. They have money, prospects, and an anxious fan base. It will work itself out.
efax0977
I can post and think whatever I want smart guy
rayking
My impartial opinion, since I’m a Cards fan… Freeman is underrated, and this post is either trolling or written by someone who dislikes the braves.
efax0977
Sorry love the Braves, will always be a fan and they will always be my team.
TradeAcuna
Freeman is the last guy to call overrated. Acuna is Heyward v2. guaranteed!
black69
That’s not true. Acuna takes instruction. Heyward didn’t. That always was and always will be his problem.
realgone2
Ignore this guy, Black. He trolls braves’ posts. Another idiot like the guy above who said Freeman was overrated.
Bocephus
How would you know?
TradeAcuna
Meh, people were arguing with me when I said Freeman will be a better player than Heyward. One major red flag for Heyward for me was the constant hitting stance changes. Acuna is already changing what made him successful at the lower level.
Zach725
He changed his hands at the all Star break last year, and then absolutely raked. Now his hands are back where they were before the all star break.
chippahawk
He just needs to get in a groove and get his timing down.. Hit where the ball is thrown but think up the middle.. He’ll get there and go on a tear!
Just needs more drills and time is all.
chippahawk
And he’s about there with his timing as hes showing tonite.. Acuna can’t do it by himself though unfortunately. Wish this team could all click at once, it’s always 3-4 guys in the lineup that are hot while the rest is slumping. The lineup has no rhythm, the bullpen pitches good when the lineup is struggling and the rotation is a Crap shoot unless theyre playing an inferior lineup.
TradeAcuna
The rotation is the teams made problem. When Folty is your fake ace, you have a problem.
BravesNutter01
Utilizing Newk in the pen is smart baseball. Braves have an abundance of starters and their bullpen continues to have issues. I hope Fried’s ok, it would stink if he’s hurt for an extended period.
Dodgers have issued exactly ZERO walks in the first two games of this three game set against the Bravos, which is unusual to say the least. My Braves are totally outclassed..
RunDMC
Finally. Teams have been getting a lot of production and IP out of mid-RPs: Marcus Walden (BOS), Jalen Beeks (TB) & Sam Gaviglio (TOR). Best thing Braves could do is find quality IP for a prospect starter to gain experience and find a role to refine.
sevans36
I like newk but putting him in the pen is scary based on how many walks per 9 he has.
DarkSide830
Imagine giving up on Newk so quickly. If the Phillies still think Pivetta is a starter, there is no reason Newk cant be.
RunDMC
Sure, but PHI didn’t give up the best glove in the game for Pivetta. Man, I miss him. (Sigh – stares it window).
azbraves20
Swanson started his Braves career slow.
He has more power than Simmons, which relates to almost 100 points better on his ops, and his fielding has gotten more and more solid.
Still cant forget that D’Backs game where he threw the guy out at home.
Let Newk find his command and ill take him and Swanson any day.
Yes I know Swanson wasn’t part of the Simmons trade..
DarkSide830
id take any of them over Miller at this point, so at least that’s a plus
DarkSide830
you have a point
efax0977
What does it mean to sigh and “stares it window” you’re a genius(see how I used you’re, not your smart guy?)
Bedminster Abby
It may seem like the Dodgers have had the Braves number but that’s only very recently. Over the past 5 years the Dodgers have 4 winning season records against the Braves. But over the past 25 years the Dodgers only have 7 winning season records against the Braves. Only during the recent Braves rebuild have the Dodgers had a consistent winning record against the Braves. Watch out once the Braves have their team assembled for the next decade to again become the dominant team in the National League.
DarkSide830
bring back Bobby Cox
RunDMC
I believe Cox remains hospitalized after his stroke. Best wishes to him.
bravesfan
Unrelated, but there is a clear difference between the braves and dodgers. Not only in talent, but attitude as well. You are seeing the difference between a playoff contender and a World Series contender for sure. It’s embarrassing as a braves fan when you’re told the budget is there to bring in elite talent and there is an absolute refusal to go get any talent
brandons-3
Reminder that Duvall, O’Day and Vizcaino are making a combined $16.6 million. The Braves swore O’Day would be ready for spring training. Even though they traded for him and his salary last July, the Braves could’ve been off the hook for all but a tiny portion of Duvall and Vizcaino’s salary right before Opening Day.
The worst excuse when the Braves don’t make significant additions at the deadline will be because the team didn’t warrant it. The front office put Snit and the players behind the 8-ball before the season ever began.
RunDMC
Are you also disappointed when a politician fails to deliver on their campaign promise?
thegoldfish
So, does this mean the Braves believe Newk is a new man or not? Did he straighten himself out or not?
He certainly showed he’s changed in one relief appearance and in last 2 AAA starts. Apparently right now they think he’s still not to be trusted with the keys to a starting spot or they would not be talking this nonsense.
IMO, if he is good enough to be on the team then he should start – otherwise send him back till you’re sure. Does anyone think a good Newk starting is not worth more than an iffy Gausman? An iffy Julio? Seriously?
chippahawk
Time will tell what happens to newk, it’s all in his hands and his only. For now he’s where he needs to be and it’s up to him if he stays there, impresses enough to get back in the rotation or gets demoted.. Can’t say he doesn’t get his shots!
azbraves20
Newk threw the ball well last night, looks encouraging.
Not sure why Jackson threw so many off speed pitches in the 9th and I think I have as over AJ Minter as I am over pogs and slammers.
Sucks they got the L when Soroka look outstanding.
