Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos “made it clear” Sunday that they have legitimate interest in free-agent pitchers Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel, according to Jim Bowden of SiriusXM. Unsurprisingly, though, the Braves don’t seem inclined to sign Kimbrel or Keuchel until the June 3 draft, at which point a team would not have to surrender a pick for either of the two qualifying offer recipients.
Given their outstanding track records in the majors, Kimbrel and Keuchel entered free agency in November as two of the highest-ranked players available. High-paying, long-term contracts looked likely for both players at the time, but seven months later, they remain without teams. That probably won’t be the case for much longer considering the soon-to-expire draft pick ramifications, however.
For the Braves, the interest in Kimbrel is particularly notable. The right-hander was a 2008 draftee of the Braves, who took him in the third round and then saw him develop into one of the best picks in franchise history. Now one of the greatest relievers ever, Kimbrel spent 2010-14 with Atlanta, for which he pitched to a near-spotless 1.43 ERA/1.52 FIP with 14.82 K/9 against 3.36 BB/9 and piled up 186 saves over 289 innings. The Braves then ended their relationship with Kimbrel when they traded him to the Padres in April 2015. Kimbrel, now 31, moved on to the Red Sox via trade in 2016 and remained a formidable late-game force with the club through 2018, though he wasn’t as effective last season after an otherworldly showing in 2017.
On paper, Kimbrel would be an enormous pickup for an Atlanta team whose bullpen has fallen short this season. Their relief unit ranks 22nd in the majors in ERA and 27th in walks per nine innings, though current closer Luke Jackson, Touki Toussaint, Sean Newcomb and Jacob Webb have been good to great. Otherwise, the Braves have shuffled through several veterans who are far less inspiring than Kimbrel. Arodys Vizcaino, Jesse Biddle and Jonny Venters – all of whom are now out of the organization – as well as Josh Tomlin, the just-acquired Anthony Swarzak and Jerry Blevins are among familiar names the Braves have turned to in search of solutions.
The Braves’ rotation has been better than their bullpen, ranking 10th in ERA and 18th in fWAR, but the club seems to believe there’s ample room for improvement. They could look to Keuchel, a 31-year-old southpaw who’s a former AL Cy Young winner (2015), for help. The ex-Astro would be the most established starter on Atlanta’s staff, but he’d have a hard time topping the marvelous production Mike Soroka and Max Fried have put forth. Kevin Gausman and Julio Teheran have been useful in their own right, but the Braves have otherwise struggled to find a capable fifth member for their rotation. Mike Foltynewicz entered 2019 off what looked like a breakout season, but he has been a weak link so far. Newcomb, Toussaint, Kyle Wright and Bryse Wilson have also had difficulty over a combined eight starts.
Of course, it’s worth pointing out that no one knows when Kimbrel or Keuchel will be ready to help a team. Even if they sign within the next week, they’ll likely need time to prepare to join their next club(s). Beyond that, there’s the key matter of how much they’ll cost. That may be of especially great import to the Braves, whose payroll has left fans upset this season. They opened 2018 with an $118MM-plus outlay, but despite winning the NL East last season, they’re now in the $115MM range. What’s more, back in February, neither Anthopoulos nor Braves CEO Terry McGuirk seemed too enthusiastic about distributing a big, multiyear contract. However, McGuirk did note, “We still have an appreciable amount of dry powder ready to go.”

This just in; things that should’ve been written in December….
22Leo
I think it was, but it didn’t amount to anything.
braveshomer
bullpen has obvioulsy cost us all year but they literally are the reason for the last 3 losses….Braves should be on an 11 game winning streak right now, and should already be 4 up on the Phillies in first. Kimbrel won’t solve everything but he would sure help
nockahoma
AA will look like a genius if he gets 1 or both of them prorated on the year…without giving up a draft pick….and we are still very much in the hunt for the NLE and Playoffs again…. If they miss out on both…that might be a different story. Braves ORG as long assigned a huge value to early draft picks, so if a player is going to cost them a draft pick it will have to come on a team friendly multi year contract…and besides the market shows that Kimbrel and Keuchel were shooting for the moon and and the market wouldnt/couldnt bare it…. otherwise one of the 30 teams would have met their asking price.
brian214
You do realize the Phils have been in the same boat for the most part? This should be a fun 4 1/2 months because I think this is going down to the wire.
black69
Seriously. Everyone’s acting like a four game lead in late May equates to a World Series ring.
It doesn’t matter when the team is built. If you make the playoffs and have the team, you can perform and win. Right now, anthropolous has WON the Kimbrel/Keuchel sweepstakes. 29 other teams gave him two months to evaluate his talent in MLB games before deciding to sign them, and his team is right in the mix of the division.
braveshomer
a 4 game in May doesnt mean much I agree. But the Braves basically won the East last year by June 1st. They basically played .500 ball from mid-June on. These first 50 games matter as much as the last 50, dont get how people think these games dont matter
black69
I didn’t say that they don’t matter. But Philly having a lead going into the deadline and feeling comfortable and not making trades, and Atl knowing it’s got talent that will improve it coming down the stretch isn’t a bad thing.
While the 50 all matter, it certainly is more convenient to win the division in the last 50.
sidbream1991
The Phillies spent most of July and the first two weeks of August in first place last year.
soccer11
They better not think they’re going to get these guys for less than 2 year: $30 million
braveshomer
so AA physically said they have interest in both?!…I need to hear this with my own 2 ears lol. Hope it’s true but i just don’t see them winning any ‘bidding wars’ if there is one…
brandons-3
The thing is there’s no reason they shouldn’t get at least one of them. No draft pick loss and you aren’t even paying for a full season’s salary.
braveshomer
but how many other teams are thinking the same…I just don’t see them being overly aggressive to snag one of these guys even if it’s a 1 year deal
black69
Because they didn’t do that with Donaldson.
SocoComfort
Yea I can see where you are coming from and tend to agree but that bullpen needs some more additions.
braveshomer
lol what bidding war was there with Donaldson? We bid against ourselves and AA basically did buddy deal and just guaranteed his salary from the year prior plus he got to revalue himself.
black69
There wasn’t a bidding war. AA outbid the market so there wouldn’t be.
Explain to me how that’s not, and I quote, “Being overly aggressive trying to snag one of these guys even on a one year deal”.
Where I sit, that’s pretty much verbatim.
TLB2001
I think both are still demanding multi year deals though.
No sympathy for either of these dudes who both egregiously overplayed their hand and then took too long to admit it to themselves.
black69
I agree. At this point, I wouldn’t mind a multi year deal.
astrosfan4life
Keuchel has made it clear he won’t accept a discounted rate. I’m torn about this as when he’s painting his spots he can be elite level, however when he isn’t…watch out. He’s a soft tosser so if he isn’t hitting his spots, it’s more of a live batting practice.
All in all, he isn’t a $14-20m per year pitcher, but kudos to him if he can obtain it anyways.
Ironman_4life
This seems like a team that can compete for division. No reason to not get better. Sign at least 1 of them.
kingken67
Why do people keep assuming it’s the draft pick compensation that had kept these 2 unsigned to this point? Other players who had compensation attached to them signed this past winter. What has kept these 2 unsigned has been their contract demands, both demanding at least 5 years for their deals. Unless they both have come down to earth from that they’re still unlikely to be signed even after June 3rd.
22Leo
The draft is a factor, but their demands have been factors as well. Keuchel, at least from what I have read, has reduced the length of contract he is seeking.
mj-2
Well I can’t speak in a general sense why Kimbrel wasn’t signed by someone. But from the Braves side of thing, the most recent excuse they have for not signing Kimbrel was the draft pick tied to him.
The first excuse back in December was his asking price. That came down near the end of spring training (or at least reports came out it had dropped to more of a Zach Britton contract ask of 3 years in the $54 mil range). Here is where the Braves excuse was then the draft pick loss and how we can’t give up picks because of those international sanctions hurting us so we need all the picks we can get.
Now with the asking price dropped and the draft pick removed, it will be interesting to see the Braves newest excuse if they fail to sign him again.
This of course after they projected to increase payroll leading in to the offseason (only to see it actually drop where their excuse was they were saving funds for later….and it’s now later).
That pretty much sums up the Braves. But I can’t speak for other teams not signing Kimbrel yet.
bhambrave
I think for the Braves it was both contract demands and the draft pick, but the draft pick was the main thing. Under normal circumstances it wouldn’t have deterred them, but these aren’t normal circumstances.
jdgoat
Teams will be able to give out huge one year deals though for these guys and don’t have to risk losing picks and the slot money that comes with it.
Losing both of those things on a one year deal is almost a certain no. But after the draft, you’re just burning money.
WFG1
Such a great pick-up…it’s a shame the Red Sox couldn’t use them.
Bocephus
“it’s a shame the Red Sox couldn’t use them” How do you figure?
MafiaBass
I think WFG1 meant “won’t” rather than couldn’t.
WFG1
Bingo!

Gotta love it….Braves “have an interest” in Kimbrell/Kuechel…….did I mention I “have an interest” is spending this weekend with Jay-Lo?……….

You’re living in the past, man! You’re hung up on some clown from the sixties, man!
Jwick22
Folty has looked pretty good his last couple of starts. He got a late start so I wouldn’t be concerned with him or the rotation until closer to the deadline. The bullpen on the other hand is a nightmare. I’m nervous every time they go to the bullpen. Even in non save situations it can get uneasy
bbatardo
A good example of why draft picks matter… Padres traded for Kimbrel and threw in the 41st pick in the 2015 draft. Who was it? Austin Riley. He obviously is the prize from that trade (Unless you count unloading BJ Upton too).
mj-2
For every one example like this, there’s 10+ examples why they don’t matter.
Not saying picks aren’t important but your argument is incredibly misleading in regards to their true value. They aren’t all Austin Riley.
60yearfan
Naw, gotta say unloading BJ was by far the best thing that happened to ATL. Easily my most disliked Brave, and a good reason for Frank Wren to get tossed. Hard to question the rebuild though – minus the Donaldson signing – so far.
petfoodfella
If the Braves miss the playoffs bc of the bullpen, I’ll question the JD signing. But right now I think it’s fine. I don’t mind the signing and you can’t know Riley would smash AAA the way he did and force a move up.
Camargo just wasn’t the answer, even though Braves fans wanted him to be the next Prado.
bravesfan
If the braves don’t ultimately get at least kimbrel, you better believe the fans will freak! All those fans who said kimbrel isn’t worth it, braves bullpen 9 blown saves while only 2-3 games back proves you wrong.
tmlmikey
As a life long Blue Jays fan I don’t think any fan should worry AA trying his damndest to make the Braves the team they want to see on the field. His relentless hunger to make his team better will bear fruit some enough. I’m envious of Atlanta fans right now.
Lars Running
“His relentless hunger…will bear fruit”. How does that work exactly? I think you’re mixing your metaphors.
its_happening
As a lifelong Jays fan, I’d say that comment from Mikey was the work of fiction.
Central Valley
Go get Will Smith and Madison Bumgarner from the SF Giants. Then you’ll be loaded come playoff time.
RunDMC
…or keep prospects and spend the nest egg. And who knows what MadBum wants adding ATL to his limited NTC. MadBum is not the pitcher he once was and not sure if he’d be better than Keuchel, the GB wizard if including the fact that you aren’t losing prospects/draft picks.
bravesfan
Or get kimbrel Dallas bum and smith and try to win something for once lol. Idk man…. I get long term success and junk like that, but I think we have enough pieces in play to compete for a while. Also, mgmt has proven they aren’t gonna spend the money to win anyways, so i have no problem dreaming big
chippahawk
Madbum, Smith, and kimbrel..oh my
bravesfan
Might as well throw Dallas in that mix. Dream big or go home
mj-2
Don’t need MadBum. Would rather have Smith and Watson (and Kimbrel).
bravesfan
ABSOLUTELY!!
frank_costanza
I just hope someone signs them already so I don’t have to hear people scream about it on my local sports talk radio everyday anymore.
Central Valley
Don’t discount what Madison Bumgarner would bring to Atlanta’s pitching staff. He’s still only 29 with 3 world championships.
He’s still pitching very well and has no major injuries. I wouldn’t discount him come playoff time. Probably not the same MadBum but I’d bet he’d still a beast in the playoffs.
Gil Del Valle
My Idea is to put Folty in the Pen and Sign Kimbrel, we have Plenty SP and keep all prospect including Ian Anderson ours next Star.
Lars Running
Get Bumgarner and Keuchel send Gausman and Teheran to the pen.
mj-2
Why would you put Folty in the pen? Sure he had a few rough starts to open the year but his last two he’s looked like the pitcher he was last year which was 6th in Cy Young voting if I remember right…
Yeah let’s put that in the bullpen. Gausman is the one in the hot seat imo. Even Teheran (who I wanted gone entering the year) has managed to pitch respectably and has earned his rotation spot for now. Though he is on thin ice
doxiedevil
Watch another team up the ante on both these guys.
Brittingham
If Kimbrel is back to his usual form, he could help this team immensely. I think Newcomb could hold down the closer role until the draft and then take over as a great setup man afterwards. I don’t really get the Keuchel thing unless we are gonna expand to a six man rotation to save the arms of Fried and Soroka. Folty will be fine. He has been back to his old self the last couple starts. The Braves have to at least try to go after Kimbrel considering the Braves say they still have mid season $ to spend along with the fact that fans are literally chanting for him at games.
RunDMC
I think they continue to have a closer-by-committee role with how much Snitker leaves and dies by the matchup, choosing between Newcomb/Luke Jackson. It could also keep young guys fresh and the pressure down, easing guys into a stressful position. Don’t love maturing guys with “kid gloves” approach, but we don’t really have a lot of internal options without thinking outside the box.
mj-2
Will we need a closer before the draft with Detroit and Washington all that’s left between now and then? Lol
WouldSettleForWildcard
If my math is right, Atlanta’s pen has a 3.09 ERA over its last 10 games, and Luke Jackson’s seeing-eye-grounder-bad-luck-blown-save last week and Winkler’s disaster Saturday night account for more than half the runs allowed. The pen moves are working, the team is streaking, they have $$$ to spend in June or July, but even if they don’t open the wallet, they’re a playoff team now with prospects galore who will make them even better in 2020 and beyond. I feel like AA is doing a pretty decent job, and I hope some of the “2019 or bust” and “ATL doesn’t want to win” anger will die down soon.
WouldSettleForWildcard
That should have gone as a comment on the article, not as a reply to the previous comment. Apologies!
Philliesfan4life
Im sorry but the phillies better make a move for one of these pitchers, it would put them over the top and keep them in first place, and they would still have the money to go trade for an arm and another bat.
azbraves20
So by waiting to save the draft pick for Kimbrel it cost us 7 blown saves
Great value proposition.
