TODAY: The Yankees have officially recalled Estrada and placed Judge on the IL with a left oblique strain, as per a team announcement. Manager Aaron Boone described Judge’s injury as “pretty significant” in comments to reporters (including Jack Curry of the YES Network), and said the outfielder would be re-evaluated in two weeks, though no specific timetable was given on when Judge could return.
SATURDAY, 5:38pm: The Yankees expect to recall infielder Thairo Estrada to replace Judge on their 25-man roster, per a team announcement.
5:08pm: An already packed, talent-rich Yankees injured list is on the verge of adding another household name. Superstar right fielder Aaron Judge left Saturday’s win over the Royals with an oblique injury and is likely heading to the 10-day IL, manager Aaron Boone told Sarah Langs of MLB.com and other reporters. Judge will go for an MRI in the meantime.
Judge’s impending IL placement continues an absurd early run of injuries for the Yankees, who, at 10-10, have tread water sans a slew of cornerstones. They’ve been without fellow starting outfielders Aaron Hicks and Giancarlo Stanton for all or most of the year, while catcher Gary Sanchez, third baseman Miguel Andujar, ace Luis Severino, setup man Dellin Betances, and shortstops Didi Gregorius and Troy Tulowitzki are also among the walking wounded. The only players nearing returns in that group are Stanton and Sanchez, who, like Judge, rank among the Yankees’ premier power threats.
As far as position players go, no one is of greater importance to the Yankees than the hulking Judge, one of the game’s foremost producers since he burst on the scene in 2017. Dating back to his transcendent rookie season, Judge ranks third in the majors in wRC+ (161) and fifth in both fWAR (14.1) and home runs (83). Factoring in Saturday, when he picked up a homer and a single, Judge is off to a dazzling .288/.404/.521 start (150 wRC+) with five HRs in 89 plate appearances.
Should Judge miss significant time, as is often the case with oblique issues, it will be the second straight year in which an injury has shelved him for a long period. Judge missed all of August and half of September last season after suffering a chip fracture in his right wrist, which also came against the Royals. By then, though, the Yankees had all but sewn up a playoff spot, making his absence easier to handle. They’re now left to hope he makes it back in short order; otherwise, Stanton’s forthcoming return will become all the more timely.
Stanton aside, the Yankees will need reserve outfielders Brett Gardner, Clint Frazier and Mike Tauchman to continue offering the solid to great production they’ve posted this season. Tyler Wade replaced Judge in right on Saturday, though he hasn’t hit at all in 157 major league PA. Meanwhile, the Yankees’ 40-man roster doesn’t include any other healthy outfield options, and their most experienced veteran in Triple-A Scranton, Billy Burns, hasn’t produced in either the majors or the minors since a respectable rookie season with the Athletics in 2015.

I’m gonna cry
robluca21
Its truly amazing the Yankees are a .500 team right now
jorge78
So true…..
Steven Chinwood
Easy, their schedule.
Melchez
Exactly… with all these teams tanking it’s easy for them because they are playing a bunch of AAA-AA teams. If they had a .500 record against teams like the Red Sox, Astros Indians, A’s and Rays, then that would be something. The Yankees bench players are better than the regulars of Tigers, Orioles, White Sox and Royals.
Just wait til all their regulars get back and they start winning. These MLBTR writers are going to be all giddy and talk about the great turnaround of the powerhouse Yankees. Guaranteed
thetruth 2
This couldn’t be further from the truth. The Red Sox have AAA players on the team? Merrifield, Moncada are all lucky to be in the Majors? Just stop.
Steven Chinwood
1 or 2 players don’t drastically improve a team.
Melchez
The Red Sox are the only team they’ve beaten that has a decent team. I see you love to cherry pick the data from what I’ve said. Sure Moncada and Merrifield are major leaguers… what about the other players on the teams? Notice the majority of Moncada’s success has been against Yankees, Tigers, and Royals.
Baltimore, Boston, White Sox and Royals are in the bottom 5 in pitching.
timewalk42
What about Alex Jorge Martin & Alberto the Royals have better bats than you give credit
stratcrowder
Yeah because they play the Red Sox a lot. Doh!
mikeyank55
Notice the season is three weeks old. Do you realize that it’s not until the 2nd half that most bad teams historically tank? Some play surprisingly mediocre (not bad) until the losing starts to sink in.
Melchez
Teams started tanking in the off season. Look at the starting rotation of the Royals. It was a slow off season because there were only a handful of teams even interested in competing.
sovtechno
I can assure you there is nothing amazing about it. The Yankees still have more payroll on their 25 man roster than the team directly above and below them in the standings combined.
AlvaroEspinoza 2
This math is wrong and the framing (ignoring the Red Sox) is misleading.
For those interested, Yanks have about $90M/year on the “I”L which brings their active payroll down to about the Blue Jays level.
Polish Hammer
Which means there’s a handful of teams that have less overall team payroll than the Yankees have just on the IL alone. No pity here…
mikeyank55
Nobody asked for pity. It’s pathetic with the Yankee haters piling on though the last laugh will be when Judge lifts the WS Championship Trophy in October, 2019.
I also love the contributors here who don’t declare their own team.
pasha2k
Because they have potent hitting.
Melchez
Pash… Correction: Because they are hitting against minor league pitching
sufferforsnakes
Cry? Why?
warren r.
A guy named “suffer for tribe” asking why a fan of another team might cry over the loss of a player?
Huh.
sufferforsnakes
There’s a difference between crying and suffering. Look it up in the dictionary. You do have a dictionary, right?
Thanks
He’s crying because Yanks have 12 IL players, and Boone didn’t say whether it’s grade 1, 2, 3,
“Pretty significant” guessing grade 2 or higher.
todd76
I hear Jose Canseco is looking for a job.
raajr187
Not since he shot his finger off
Polish Hammer
Doesn’t matter when they’ve had a pitcher missing a hand…
Polish Hammer
Plus Jose has actually admitted to using steroids so that rules out being a Yankee…
mikeyank55
Hey Polish-that is such a dated accusation that you should realize that people now know that you are an angry Yankee hater and senile.

So how are those pick up basketball games Aaron Boone is holding working out for the jankees. .500 team all year, no playoffs.

Such a dope citizen. In the midst of moving up the rankings of all clubs with stellar results from back up players and the farm your post proves that you can

By the time he gets his reps in Stanton and Sanchez will be back

The way things are going, he still might not be a bad signing if he would sign a minor league deal.
robluca21
I’m sure he would take a minor league deal. I’m always in favor of signing guys to minor league deals. No risk involved
robluca21
This is getting ridiculously ridiculous.
The yanks should think about calling up Ben ruta from double A. 30th round pick a few years ago is slashing an ops over 1.000 in the Eastern league …small sample size yes but the dude is raking in a pitchers league
bobtillman
Gotta get Refsnyder back, immediately…..and Sox need to sign BIG SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Appears the Rays, and their mausoleum of a ‘stadium’, are winning the AL East this year
Philliesfan4life
I hope they do win it
robluca21
The Ray’s are usually at least competitive..its a shame their fans dont come out to support the team. The last 20 years the rays have for the most part always put a quality product on the field
Philliesfan4life
Of the teams to win a division the most right now it’s the rays.
24TheKid
Nah, the Astros are running away with the west. Even if the Mariners offense somehow, miraculously stayed on track to shatter the homer in record, they would finish 5-10 games back.
Philliesfan4life
Astros are the team to beat in that division, I hoped the angels would actually give them a run but no rotation.
2012orioles
I’ve heard, not seen any facts, but heard that Tampa sports get great tv ratings but terrible attendance. So if that’s true, they’re still supporting, just not at the stadiums
Ry.the.Stunner
I had to look that up. The Rays get decent (not great) TV ratings in a sense that they’re not dead last. They’re ranked 21st out of the 30 teams.
Melchez
I lived in the Tampa area… A couple things hurting the Rays. Traffic is terrible. There are congested areas that make a trip from Clearwater or ST. Pete almost impossible. Any construction or accidents and your night is done. Terrible parking. The stadium is air conditioned, but you park a mile away and have to walk to the stadium in the heat. Many folks won’t do it. You can see any game you want in the nice air conditioned bar of your choice. No entry fee, No $10 beers or $10 hot dogs. You can get a nice hot meal and sit there all night long watching the game in comfort. Many of the people in the Tampa area are transplants and have home teams in other areas… Red Sox fans, Yankee fans, Phillie fans… they can watch their favorite teams in the bar. When their favorite team comes to Tampa, then they will make the journey to see them.
mikeyank55
For an Orioles fan 21st out of 30
Is like winning the division.
popcorn mattingly
They should move to Montreal!
mikeyank55
Yeah Tom, it’s time to throw in your anti Yankee prediction after the first month.

I’ve never seen this much all star talent get injured in such a short time span and it really upsets me as a fan 🙁
fitsiqis65
this is awful…. stanton and sanchez need to get healthy quick. Pressure is now on the starters and pen….
luclusciano
Is there a time that as a fan, we start to question the conditioning players are going through? While this is an extreme case for the Yankees, I see more and more examples of players getting injured wothbmuscle strains lately. Is this a thing that always happened, and access to immediate information is showing me this, or is this a new trend with the players?
jorge78
Good questions! In the old days players never lifted weights.
bush1
Muscular players like Stanton and Judge have historically been more injury prone. The big strong guys typically are tightly wound with less flexibility. There’s a reason some of the best baseball players aren’t the biggest and strongest.
dobsonel
I just read up on the Yankee’s head of strength and conditioning and he has a history of keeping players on the field. This makes me wonder if the new analytics about exit velocity has put pressure on this guy to change his approach and make these guys build up muscles too fast or if the players are making this mistake on their own.
Yankeedynasty
Sanchez will b back tomorrow at least
Begamin
nah, hes to be activated wednesday. thats not tomorrow
tim815
Walk me through what I’m missing.
Judge is IL bound. Bird can go to the 60 without any serious problems.
Activate Gio Gonzalez. Trade him to (Milwaukee/Mets/whoever) for the best third-day draft pick from 2018’s draft they can acquire.
Then, call up whoever they were bringing up, anyway.
Not a Yankees fan, but “getting a prospect” seems better than “not getting a prospect”.
thegreatcerealfamine
None of what you posted is possible, and if possible it wouldn’t make a dent in the sand.

Yeah that’s not even slightly possible. Why post such meaningless nonsense that doesn’t help anything?
ColossusOfClout
I’m pretty sure today was opt out day for Gio, and they haven’t played him in the bigs yet so he could be gone tomorrow..

They renamed it. Idk why. So there’s no dl anymore

They changed from disabled list to injured list because MLB thought not right to equate sports injuries to a disabilities.

No. He hurt himself swinging the bat.

Not true at all. It was the swing, and it was blatantly obvious it was the swing that caused the injury.

Sorry, I was listening to the game over the radio, and the announcer said he would have had double, had he not injured, assumed he suffered it running.
Goes out to Badfinger too. Thanks for correction!

Sometimes its easy like the Sox start last year and sometimes its not like the 13 players on the IL the Yankees have right now…..nobody promised this was going to be easy and do you think that the Rays are that good……its a jog not a sprint and in the end the Yankees will find a way to the playoffs.

steroids would actually help their muscles stay healthy. theres a reason doctors prescribe steroid treatments to help healing/recovery from injuries
Guest617
natural weight conditioning with a balanced diet increases your chances of staying healthy 1,000%
Begamin
I dont necessarily disagree with that. Im just saying steroids help you stay healthy/recover from injuries. Because of this it doesnt make sense to say they are imply they are on roids just because they have muscles and get injured.
king beas
Why not include his real rookie season
Oxford Karma
It is amazing that all the position players are hurt and most pitchers are healthy. Pitchers are generally out once or twice a year and out for multiple seasons over a career.

Yankees need a new medical staff
BenjiB24
Looks like the Astros (Sky Gods) are stealing all the Yankees thunder this year. And what’s with Altuve hitting 8 homers in a month with over a week to play? On pitches way up in the strike zone hitting bombs to center and grand slams. I’m not buyin it. Verlander throwing 99 in the 8th inning. Not buyin it
Melchez
Verlander has been doing that since he came up in 2006. Nothing new. Altuve has been a very good hitter for some time now. “Stealing Yankees thunder”? Says who? MLBTR never talks about the Astros. If the Yankees were doing these things, it would be every other thread on here. If we are talking about steroids… one thing that is in common with steroid users is frequent injuries and one year anomalies. A rookie that hits 52 homers when his best minor league mark was 20 and then doesn’t come close after that. Steroid alarms should be sounding.
24TheKid
Have you ever seen Aaron Judge? Once you see a picture of him you’ll understand why it’s not suspicious. Also, Verlander throwing 99 after 100 pitches at his age does raise a bit of suspicion, but I really doubt he’s cheating.
BenjiB24
Wasn’t Verlander losing velocity towards the end of his tenure with the Tigers? Altuve is a high average hitter but he shouldn’t be slugging the way he is by any means. They got all kinds of ways to cheat nowadays and people are paying big money to do so. I’m not saying it’s steroids and I’m not saying that the players are knowingly cheating. Look at Kobe Bryant and other sports stars acting like a deer in the headlights at times like they’re under mind control or RFID or something
coastalcarolinachamps
they are worse than glass. pansies!!
fitsiqis65
Here’s the challenge and d/m that I get annoyed with cash on. He passed on signing talent on the assumption that he didn’t need it and would have to pay his core guys down the line.
However signing talent would have been insurance. Didi and Hicks are always hurt, seve after pitching to 5 plus era for half fof last yearhad issues and it seems like judge and Sanchez are always visiting the nurse….
If these core guys can’t stay healthy cash’s horrible terrible off season will just look even worse.
Here’s to hoping the guys come back, are productive and stay healthy
luclusciano
Because he didn’t need it. Vision is always 20/20 in hindsight. A lot of players are hurt a lot more often these days. This is not a Yankees thing.
thecoffinnail
YeahNot even looking at the comments I am going to guess Bob has a Refsnyder comment that he has already said 3-4 times before and at least 1 evil empire comment coming from a Red Sox fan that doesn’t understand they are the evil empire now buying all of their superstars. Hardly anybody will mention this will probably keep Judge out for 3 months and his replacement on the roster won’t be brought up at all.
InvalidUserID
They need to fire the strength and conditioning coach on principal alone.
Yep it is
The Yankees have no starting pitching. This will be the 11th year in a row they and the “ Genius” Cashman haven’t won.
CincyMariner
I just wanted to take a moment and remind you Yankee fans out there who complained about the Paxton deal, how he’s your ACE right now. Despite you all crap talking his ability. Now you know why Seattle fans felt the return was super-light for two years of one of the best pitchers in the game, who by the way is very affordable. Remember that if he only goes 160 IP or something like that, it hurts his arbitration more than it hurts your team. While the Yankees are struggling with injuries, his trade value has nothing to do with the team performance. Whether you guys go to the World Series or miss the playoffs due to injuries, the Mariners should have got more and the last two starts by Paxton show why!
PopeMarley
Now I’ve heard everything. lofl
fitsiqis65
ok, but as a Yankee fan unlike a red or mariner fan, and i mean no disrespect in this- our expectations and hopes start and end differently every year.
I am livid with what Cash did this off-season because Pax is not enough nor is he right now a number 1. Said another way, Pax was a good addition at a fair price but not enough for a team that needed more than just one higher end SP. This is partially what most Yankee fans are pissed about. Plus Pax needs to prove this over a course of the year before we buy him in totality.
The other half of our annoyance was not signing one more bat. We needed a lefty and/or a SS. shockingly two of the best in the game were available without prospect cost and Cash did nada. They are paying for it…..
So i get the cincy/mariner perspective but you gotta see where Yankee fans are coming from. So far this decade its Boston 4 Yanks 1. That’s not good and i personally wanna hurl
Louiebeans
I agree with you. I’ve also said that the Yankees need Sp another top flight SP. Pax was a good edition but he doesn’t put them over the edge.
The Yankees have done nothing to put them over the edge last years FA market could have put them over the edge with the home grown talent that already have.
Patrick Corbin is 1-0 w 33 Ks and a 2.36 ERA
Charlie Morton is 2-0 with TB
I have watched a total of Zero Yankees games this year. I promised myself I will not watch Gardner and Bird ever again.
Before some of you tell me Gardner will bat 300 don’t worrk he’ll be in a offer slump pretty soon.
Nothing new when they should have gone out and made this team BETTER
They spread around 20 million on junk when they could have paid Harper 20 million a season I’m not even going to bother to say what he’s doing.
Louiebeans
I have never been more pissed as a Yankee fan then I am now. I have such a bad taste in my mouth with their off season I refuse to watch them.
It will be the same old story in the end – Falls short again
luclusciano
Be a Mets fan
InvalidUserID
Not Cash’s fault Hal didn’t let him spend.
luclusciano
That’s a weird read cincy mariner. So, after the first two games the trade made sense for the mariners and now after the next two games the Yankees got the deal. So if he throws another great game and another horrible one, does that make the trade even?
Such a small sample size does not prove anything. I truly hope Paxton tears it up for the Yankees, but he has only thrown 4 games in pinstripes – not a Cy Young candidate yet.
64' Yanks
I don’t care what Cashman said in defense of the training staff. Also, who was in charge getting the players into shape during Spring Training? I wonder if the manager and coaching staff in place are nothing but yes men for Cashman and Hal. Maybe someone forgot they needed to get the ballplayers in shape instead of relying on the analytics of the game.? This is like putting the neighbor’s kid in charge of servicing and tuning the Ferrari!
