The Tigers announced Tuesday that they’ve placed second baseman Josh Harrison on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 27, due to a left shoulder contusion. In his place, the club has selected the contract of infielder Harold Castro. Lefty Matt Moore was moved from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding 40-man roster move.
Harrison, 31, inked a one-year deal worth $2MM with the Tigers this winter, reuniting him with Pittsburgh double-play partner Jordy Mercer in the Detroit infield. He’s off to an ugly start to the season, however, hitting .156/.212/.233 through his first 99 trips to the plate. Harrison’s strikeout rate hasn’t spiked to a worrisome degree, though, and over the course of a full season one would imagine that his .181 average on balls in play will bounce back even as his hard-hit and line-drive rates have fallen off from their 2018 levels.
Castro, 25, made his big league debut with the Tigers last season but tallied just 10 plate appearances (with three hits) in September before being outrighted off the 40-man roster following the season. He stuck around with the Tigers, though, and will now get another crack at the Majors on the heels of a strong start in Toledo. Through 76 PAs, Castro is hitting .353/.392/.544 with three homers and four doubles. It’s possible that his newfound spot on the 40-man roster will be in jeopardy once Harrison is ready to go, though Castro does still have three minor league option years remaining, so the organization could also keep him on the 40-man as a valuable depth option who can be shuttled between Toledo and Detroit over the course of the season.

Big Josh Harrison fan but yikes…he does no longer look like a major league regular. He needs to see considerable time on a rehab assignment when is able. It’s that or DFA time.

I would not read too much into an April stat line but he was a late addition to Spring Training and as an older player trying to play catch up in conditioning, he was not ready and got hurt. Many of these players who get added late have all experienced these muscle pulls because they did not get enough conditioning and playing time in the Spring. For all the complaining you hear, its obvious when a player gets over 30, they need Spring Training for conditioning not necessarily AB’s.

Ronny Rodriguez should be the every day 2B

He’s been hitting the ball great all year

He’s hitting well, but his d is atrocious. Maybe if he gets regular reps at 2B he would improve.

Tigers need to bring up Daz Cameron I can’t stand watching Jacoby Jones got overpowered ever single at bat. It’s like a miracle if he even makes contact

Cameron has struggled in the minors so far. Probably too early to bring him up.

I feel bad for Jacoby because for a guy who “looks” like a player, just can’t hit to save his job. He’s no longer a “prospect” nor can you honestly say he still a “developing” player. McCann was that for a few years and the Tigers finally cut him. Jacoby is all they have until September when they call up Daz. As with the case with Mize, they can’t waste a control year on any of these prospects. They have suffered through the rebuild & still haven’t reached the bottom but they are getting close. I think they lose 90+ games this year and perhaps next as well. The difference will be next year, they will lose those games with 3 or more rookies. Mize and Cameron should be on the team from the get go in 2020 & Burrows has a shot as well. The only thing we don’t know about this year is when Castellanos, Boyd, Greene get traded and for whom!
