Reigning AL Cy Young winner Blake Snell is headed onto the 10-day injured list with a fractured toe, the club announced. (Via Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times; links to Twitter.) Righty Emilio Pagan will take the open roster spot.
Fortunately, that news is far less concerning than it seems at first glance, as Snell is only expected to miss a single start. There’s little doubt the Rays will hold him out longer if necessary to be sure, but it seems only to be a blip.
Snell has been excellent thus far in 2019, turning in 25 innings of 2.16 ERA ball after inking an extension in camp. He’s average a head-turning 13.0 K/9 against 1.4 BB/9 in the new season, making him an early favorite to repeat as the AL’s consensus best starter.
Pagan, 27, will make his debut with the Tampa Bay organization after seeing time in the majors in the last two years with the Mariners and A’s. He owns a 3.85 ERA in 112 1/3 MLB frames to this point. Despite a promising blend of 9.5 K/9 against 2.2 B/9, Pagan has been hurt by the long ball (1.6 HR/9). He has thrown six scoreless innings in four appearances to open the year at Triple-A, so it seems he could be utilized in a multi-inning capacity.

Can’t stand these injuries, it’s hard to prevent them too 🙁
DarkSide830
hmm, idve expected Faria to be called up
bjupton100
How’d he break his toe?
Yankeepatriot
If it’s his front foot maybe he landed wrong and it broke
Joe Kerr
Maybe he kicked something in the locker room after being pulled having only thrown 82 scoreless pitches only to see his bullpen immediately give up the lead.
cubshoops5
MLB network said he hurt it while moving. Maybe the Rays can hire movers for him next time
One Bite Hotdog
It’s not in their budget.

quote on espn… moving a granite pole after he got out the shower or something?!…not sure exactly what’s that means lol
bobtillman
I often move my pole when leaving the shower…..doesn’t reach to my toes tho…..
braveshomer
bwahahaha nice, makes much more sense now lol

It was a nightstand=type thing with a pole protruding from it, I suppose to hang towels. He moved the stand thinking the pole was attached, but it wasn’t and came down on his foot. That’s the last time he takes his bare feet for granite.
ckln88
That was perfect baycommuter

Maybe it’s one of those “phantom” vacations……makes sense, at this point…Yanks and Sox won’t be sub-.500 much longer…..
Steven Chinwood
Sox Yea, Yankees not so much.

I’d be more concerned about the Red Sox who can’t seem to get a decent start out of any of their pitchers. It’s not surprising they aren’t getting any offensive production out of 2B and C. That certainly won’t change and I wouldn’t be surprised if Bradley doesn’t hit very much either. Kinda hard to have this great lineup when 3 guys don’t hit. Devers isn’t exactly smoking the ball either. And we haven’t even really seen their perceived weakness , the bullpen, in many high leverage spots. The Yankees get some guys healthy and you should see improvement just from that. Not to mention with the Yankees you can see the importance of depth. They’re playing some scrubs right now as well but Boston certainly doesn’t have a DJ Lemahieu and Clint Frazier sitting around to fill in.

Snell broke his toe walking up the dugout steps before skipper said “you’re not going out there for the 7th”. He stopped, jammed his toe and suffered a fracture. True story….
geejohnny
Doubt that. I watched the game and when he left the field there were handshakes all around. Something never done mid game.
its_happening
I have it on good authority my story isn’t true. So there.

Can we stop treating these MEN (this particular one who just negotiated a 50 million dollar deal) as if they’re twelve year old Little Leaguers?????
I doubt Snell was upset he was lifted, any more than you would be if your boss told you to take the rest of the day off, go home, take a shower, and open a brew or light up a fattie.
MAYBE if it’s September , and they’re in a pennant race, they have a slight concern if the team wins or loses. Otherwise, it’s a short work day.
Who gets mad at THAT???? (Mad Max, maybe…that’s about it).
I Believe We Can Win
1. A lot of pitchers get mad when pulled early. Competitors usually do. Doesnt make them unstable or a bad club house guy. Every game counts.
2. If I were a manager and went to pull a guy out and he was like yeah ok skip here’s the ball id have more issue with his willingness to quit than if he were to fight tooth and nail to stay in and be upset he was pulled.
3. I’m sure snell pleaded to stay in or made his case but skip chose to pull him still.
Joe Kerr
I would be mad. I would be really mad if they lose out on a playoff spot by 1 game too. Every game matters, not just the games late in the year.

I remember a few years ago when Scott Downs broke his toe batting or running in an interleague game, he was having a great season and just never got back in a rhythm.
Oxford Karma
Underrated pitcher, Scott downs. If he played now he’d get 10 mil a year
its_happening
For a brief period he was a damn good lefty bullpen arm. Was never the same after that interleague game.
holecamels35
Is it his fault or the manager’s that he doesn’t pitch deep into games? I feel like he’s obviously a very good pitcher, but winning the cy young with less than 200 innings and giving 5-6 inning starts doesn’t impress me much. You can’t rely on the bullpen to hold a lead for 4 innings every start.
