The Orioles announced Wednesday that Rule 5 pick Drew Jackson has cleared outright waivers and been returned to the Dodgers organization. He’ll be assigned to a minor league affiliate but won’t require placement on Los Angeles’ 40-man roster. He’d been designated for assignment when the Orioles signed Dan Straily.
Jackson, 25, appeared in three games with the O’s before being designated for assignment but received just four plate appearances. He’s still looking for his first big league hit but will now have to bide his time in the minors as he awaits a fresh opportunity for that milestone.
Jackson has more than 1,000 innings of minor league experience at second base and north of 2100 innings at shortstop, though the O’s deployed him as an outfielder in his brief time with the organization. He spent the ’18 campaign with the Dodgers’ Double-A affiliate, where he hit .251/.356/.447 with 15 homers and 22 steals (in 29 attempts). He’s one of two Rule 5 picks who broke camp with the Orioles, joining shortstop (and No. 1 pick in last December’s draft) Richie Martin. Rostering multiple Rule 5 selections is difficult even for a rebuilding organization like the Orioles, though, and the O’s felt it prudent to evaluate other options both in the middle infield and in the outfield rather than dedicate the necessary playing time to do so with Jackson.

You know you’re bad when even the orioles don’t want you

You sound really uneducated with that comment, just FYI.

It’s sad when you’re not even doing a good troll job with these repeatable comments.

Why? If mlbs worst team by record and most other indicators can’t use a career minor leaguer…not a good sign.

Carrying a rule 5 guy (not to mention two) all season on the 25-man is very difficult. This is even more true for position players. Jackson had a very impressive spring and wasn’t given an opportunity with the big league team before they DFA’d him. In my opinion, this was an incredibly idiotic move on Elias’ part. Jackson has massive potential with his versatility and a strong set of tools including a cannon for an arm. He had 15 home runs and 22 steals in just 410 plate appearances last year. Hyde himself said he’s a pro and hopes to manage him again someday. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Orioles tried to make a trade with the Dodgers to get him back like they just did with the Cubs for Araujo after DFA’ing him. But I’m sure the Dodgers turned that down. They are no doubt thrilled to have Jackson back.

The dodgers chose not to keep drew Jackson on their 40 man roster and left him exposed to waivers. He doesn’t rank within their top 30 prospects. I’m sure we could convince them to make a small trade for a guy who profiles as a right handed Ryan Flaherty.

Please educate yourself on rule 5. They would have had to keep him on their 25-man roster all season, not 40. Along with another rule 5 guy. That’s never an easy decision when these kids haven’t had MLB experience. But they should have at least given Jackson a chance. He did nothing but exceed expectations during his time with the O’s. And BTW he was their #25 prospect and IMO has a lot more upside than Ryan Flaherty–namely he’s got a 70 grade arm, plus speed and has started showing a lot more power. He’s also shown tremendous effort at every position and it doesn’t hurt that he’s known to be a great teammate with a great attitude. There are a handful of guys on the 25-man that have proven themselves mediocre–or awful in the case of Davis–that should have gone instead of a true prospect like Jackson.

Man that’s gotta be a kick in the nuts to get cut by the Orioles.

Hopefully, Richie Martin will follow.
TreyMancini
Nah, Martin is a former top prospect with a good glove who’s shown promise. Who would you prefer play short? A veteran retread? Engelb Vielma? Bostick?
Brixton
Might as well play Davis at SS so u can let trumbo/mancini play 1B/DH

A simple Google search proves this is false.

I just did a simple Google search and it’s actually correct. What are you talking about?

When’s he in the majors?
Luke Strong
What a thrill for Jackson, he got to play in the majors, who cares if it’s just 4 AB’s. Even if he never gets another chance, this man can eventually leave the game one day knowing he made it, if only just for a moment. That’s more than every one of us could ever say.

What’s with all the negative posts? We all know carrying a rule 5 guy is difficult. Especially a position player. A reliever can get lost in the bullpen for a year, but a position player has to take the field fairly regularly because there are usually only 3 or 4 guys on the bench. The Orioles had 2 rule 5 guys that were position players. That was going to be very hard to pull off. Jackson had a solid spring and earned a spot on the roster. I bet they tried to make a trade for him so he could go to the minors, but the Dodgers probably wanted him back. This is all positive news. The player was wanted by both teams.

Because 50% of the folks here don’t understand how Rule 5 works—despite the fact that Steve gave a good answer—and another 25% are trying the be the funniest kid in class with stupid snark.
I’m sure Jackson is a player the Orioles would love to stash in AAA and further his development, but Rule 5 doesn’t allow that. If he’s not ready to play at MLB level 2-4 times a week, he can’t stay on the team roster.
24TheKid
I think everyone here understands how Rule 5 works.

It’s rules 1-4 I don’t get lol

I would hope so, but many of the comments indicate otherwise.

Technical questions about Rule 5:
1. If a team makes a waiver claim on a Rule 5 player, is the claiming team required to place him on the 25-, or 40-man roster?
2. If the ‘original’ team (in this case LAD) decides not to take back the player, can the ‘current’ team (in this case BAL) assign the player to the minors without him being on the 40-man roster?
Thanks folks.
alexthegod
1. any team who acquires the player must place that player on the 25 man roster for the entire season.
2. yes. if he goes unclaimed he must be offered back to the original club who almost always takes him back as he can be optioned back to the minors often avoiding being on the 25 or 40 man roster at that point since he cleared waivers. if the original team does not want him back then you are correct the current team can send him to the minors.
a new tactic in the last few years is not protecting lower minor league players knowing that it is 99% likely that said player would not survive at the major league level for a whole season.
