The Mariners have struck a minor-league accord with right-hander Neftali Feliz, according to multiple reports. Dominican journalist Hector Gomez appears to have had the news first, via Twitter.
If indeed the deal is completed, the Seattle organization will add another veteran depth piece. Odds are that Feliz would be asked to open at Triple-A Tacoma, though he may first head to extended spring training to build up arm strength.
Feliz debuted way back in 2009 but is still just thirty years of age. He didn’t appear in the majors last year, the first such season since his arrival on the scene with the Rangers.
Though he once possessed one of the game’s most intriguing arms — and indeed won the 2010 Rookie of the Year Award — Feliz was sidetracked by injuries after trying to move back from the bullpen into the rotation. His has been a journeyman’s experience since wrapping up his time in Texas.
Feliz was able to rack up 53 2/3 innings of 3.52 ERA ball in 2016, running 10.2 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 but also allowing ten long balls. The dinger issues arose again in the ensuing season, with nine balls leaving the yard in his 46 frames with the Brewers and Royals. Feliz finished with a 5.48 ERA and took a minors deal with the D-Backs. He made a dozen starts and 25 relief appearances but managed only a 4.81 ERA with a middling 75:54 K/BB ratio.

Ok.

Low risk depth move
Vizionaire
future Seattle closer when dip dip trades away everybody again.
warwhatisitgoodfor
There’s about an equal chance of Feliz getting the closer role and Felix getting moved to closer role
compassrose
Poor Angel fans they are so upset.
Jeff Zanghi
Good for him, getting another shot at it. He was such a promising young arm until the injuries arose from his move (back) to the rotation. I wish him the best and who knows maybe they catch lightning in a bottle with a late career comeback of sorts!!
Goku the Knowledgable One
Yep too bad the injury bug got em.
braveshomer
oh geez…Mark Texeira trade still haunting us Braves fans everytime we hear one of these players names smh
The Ranger Fan
And we thank you braves for the trade, Elvis is still in the building and still our shortstop, hopefully for a few more years.
todd76
That trade was horrendous for the Braves as well as sending away Wainwright!
braveshomer
the only thing we got out of the trade was Chipper flirted with a .400 batting average for half a season cuz tex was hitting behind him….that’s it! lol
The Ranger Fan
Wish Neftali Felix luck hope he does well except when facing us.

Same here. Always liked the guy. Tough to forget how good he once was isn’t it.
Ejemp2006
He has a dinger issue just like me. How can I root against?

Don’t we all?

I remember this guy.

This team is unsustainable
Connorsoxfan
It sure is fun for now though. And Domingo Santana might be the real deal again. That would be huge. Narvaez can play, there’s some prospects, if they can find some pitchers for next year they’d be in great shape. Heck they could look into Keuchel on a 1 year deal if they really wanted to.
myaccount
Hard pass, unless it’s after the draft. Already have 3 lefties in the rotation, though.
RobBoSoxNMariners
Easy to say a team is unsustainable when they are playing at an insane level. What does unsustainable mean to you? I don’t think they will hit a homerun every game this year, but I think they will have a great approach at the plate all year. I think the majority of the time they will drive the starting pitchers pitch count over 50 by the fourth inning. I think they will score runs as long as players stay healthy. Y’all that are doubting this, seem not to be watching. That’s cool though, they are playing like everyone doubts them. Keep doubting them.
CowboysoldierFTW
Rangers totally ruined him.
Groucho
Bah. Nonsense. He couldn’t start because he’s got 2 pitches. This wasn’t SF riding Big Time Timmy Jim into the ground. Dude closed 95% of his time with the Rangers.
Tha Dilla
Rangers did ruin him bringing him up as a bullpen arm when all he did in the minors coming up was start games and dominate.
Groucho
I disagrilla, Dilla. “All he did…” at what, age 19? 20? If the Rangers erred it was bringing him up period. But enough with “ruined.” He was Rookie of the Year; closed 2 AL Pennant winning seasons he was so ruined. Nah. After he blew it in the 2011 WS, he couldn’t close anymore, wanted to go back to starting, promptly got injured, never came back to form. That’s regular, vanilla flavored life.
Michael Chaney
Good for him to get another chance. But personally, I hate the idea to move elite relievers back to the rotation. For many of them, there’s a reason they were moved to the bullpen in the first place, and it’s just not worth the risk.
It ruined Daniel Bard’s career too.
joepanikatthedisco
Almost ruined Chapman’s

Joba too!

Was jut watching highlights of game 6 against the cardinals. Two outs and fly ball to right, wonder if he thinks about that often
BenjiB24
I think the Mariners can bring him back to form. He could do quite well. Good move

The mariners offense is 100% sustainable. Watch them play, look at what they are doing to starters. The pitching is the question mark. But I’d expect them to be one of the top offenses in baseball all summer.
