The Mariners have acquired righty Mike Wright from the Orioles, per a club announcement. Infield Ryne Ogren will head to the Baltimore organization in return.
Wright was designated for assignment recently by the O’s. The out-of-options hurler will head onto the active roster for the M’s. He’ll need to remain there or be exposed to waivers.
The results haven’t been there for Wright, who carries a 5.95 ERA through 242 career frames in the majors. He has been hurt by the long ball this year, surrendering five in just 13 1/3 innings of work en route to a ghastly 9.45 ERA.
It’s not entirely clear what the Mariners hope to accomplish with the move beyond adding another arm to the stable. Perhaps their analytics department has an idea for how to squeeze improved results from his raw stuff, which includes a four-seam fastball that sits at around 94 mph.
As for Ogren, the 22-year-old was a 12th-round draft pick in 2018. He has been stationed at the Class A level to open the 2019 season, where he carries a .229/.319/.343 slash in 48 plate appearances.

Jerry is up early today.

As an Os fan I hope he enjoyed his stay but he needs some new scenery.

Yes but he’ll do well somewhere. Good arm. Just needs to fine tune his stuff.

I prefer player for player trades to waiver wire additions.
A random reliever for an early third-day choice from the previous draft beats a waiver wire trade.

They can DFA Alaniz to make room on the 40, but something has to give on the active roster to make room for Wright. Perhaps Armstrong goes on the IL.
Regardless, it would be interesting to know what Seattle sees in Wright if anything more than an emergency arm.
houkenflouken
Really sucks we had to DFA Armstrong. Alaniz has been terrible but he has options I guess.
bigdaddyhacks
This is exactly what will happen.
O's Fan_JMiller
Wright might be able to keep the ball in Seattle’s park…. ‘might’…. as in ‘when hope springs eternal’. His command needs a lot of work. Paul Davis will only be able to do so much with him if his command is like it was with Baltimore.

I love this trade for both sides. From the Orioles side, they get a lotto ticket for a player they DFA’d anyways. And from the Mariners side, Jerry DiPoto gets to make a trade.
TreyMancini
Damn…Elias managed to get a lotto ticket for Mike Wright? Sure, Ogren is nothing special, but he’s something more than just cash.

Wright amongst other mental issues on the mound really needs an offspeed pitch. He works with a four seamer and a cutter. That’s his entire arsenal. He rarely ever uses a changeup or a slider. It’s a 93 Mph fastball and a 89 mph cutter. That’s what you get. He’s phased out the slider, curveball and changeup almost completely. He’s gotten hit worse than he ever has this year with this current arsenal. I’m not sure why he wouldn’t want to use that slider or changeup more as now he has two pitches with very little separation and the cutter isn’t particularly good
TreyMancini
This is a good point. The old regime stuck with him cuz he had a fastball with good movement, his fastball is quite good. But that’s literally all he throws. Not to mention velocity is down.
tonypro7
He phased those pitches because his command just isn’t good enough at the MLB level. He’s also losing velocity. Hopefully a change of scenery will help.
jbigz12
Considering he’s thrown the cutter for 2 seasons and his command has been worse than his career average both years it’s safe to say the switch hasn’t worked.
He’s been getting battered. Time to rethink the strategy. A change of scenery can’t hurt but an ineffective cutter paired with a fastball as the only 2 things in your arsenal isn’t a recipe for success.
steliokontos
I hope he finds success else where like many other O’s pitchers in the past.
TreyMancini
It was just Arrieta and Strop, maybe Zach Davies (although he hadn’t reached the majors yet, and was still considered a prospect). I have no clue why people perpetuate this story that the Orioles trade away guys who become good pitchers. Every team makes bad trades.
mehs
It goes along with the never ending physical comments of which they have been proven right more often than not..
TreyMancini
Haha, that too. We dodged a bullet with Fowler.
jbigz12
I would add Gausman to that list. Though Strop and Gausman did have some success here it just wasn’t consistent.
TreyMancini
That’s quite a good point. Although we haven’t really had enough sample size with gausman, it does look that way. Although I wouldn’t put Brach on the list, he’s always been streaky, the braves just got good Brach.
