The Rays announced today that infielder Joey Wendle has been diagnosed with a fractured right wrist, as MLB.com’s Juan Toribio was among those to cover on Twitter. The injury occurred when he was hit by a pitch in today’s game.
It’s rough news for a player who only just made it back to the active roster after opening the season on the IL. Soon to turn 29, Wendle had hoped that the 2019 campaign would represent an opportunity to build off of an excellent first full season in the bigs.
Last year, Wendle slashed a robust .300/.354/.435 while hitting seven long balls and swiping 16 bags. That showing earned him a fourth-place finish in the American League Rookie of the Year voting.
Entering play today, the late-bloomer had managed only a single hit in 22 plate appearances on the new season. He was 2-for-2 on the day before the errant pitch changed the course of his season.

What the hell, didn’t he just come back? That’s so unlucky. He had a hot year last year, and as a former A’s farmhand and a really good guy I wanted to see him do well so badly.

I was bummed when the Tribe traded him to the A’s.

I was kind of bummed when we traded him to the Rays, but he was blocked, Lowrie ended up having a good season and Jonah Heim is looking like a reliable backup to Murphy at some point.

Id take wendle easily over profar and maybe they shouldve traded baretto long ago too. He has major prospect fatigue now and 3rd year in AAA and not really hiting either.

After his break out year in 2018, it would suck for him if he’d had an extension presented to him by TB over the offseason and turned it down…
DarkSide830
he’ll be back eventually. question is if his year was a fluke.

Whether a 28 year old rookies season was a fluke or not is definitely a good question

Tough luck. Not too bothered by it as long as Adames gets going.

The guy is tough that’s for sure. He took the hit and jogged to first like it wasn’t a big deal. Hate to see this kind of injury happen at all, to any player. Quite a few pitchers don’t know where the ball is going, it would seem. Hit batsmen and walks…

Sad, Wendle is a big loss. Has anybody heard the status of Matt Duffy?

I don’t think Wendle is a big loss. Brandon Lowe should be the starting 2B everyday. I don’t think wendle is anywhere near last years guy. The only thing he was useful for was that he could’ve filled in for the struggling Adames. But Robertson is also still around.
