The Indians have announced a two-year contract extension with skipper Terry Francona. He’ll be at the helm through the 2022 season.
Francona has already managed six full seasons in Cleveland, so he’ll have run the dugout for nine in total by the end of this contract. That would top his eight-season tenure with the Red Sox and four-year stint with the Phillies.
To this point, the arrangement has been quite successful. Under Francona’s leadership, the club has a .562 winning percentage — which is actually a bit shy of the .574 mark his charges in Boston managed during his run there.
The Indians haven’t yet gotten over the hump, but have come achingly close to a World Series under Francona. They’ve run off three-straight division titles and have been to the postseason four times in six seasons. The club pushed the Cubs to the brink in 2016, narrowly losing a memorable World Series.
extention season rolls on
Even managers are getting in on the action lol
Cleveland blew a 3-1 lead.
Yup the first and last time a team ever blew a series…….
I wonder if there’s a team that ever blew a series up 3-0 in baseball? Hmmmmm……
Golden State did it first
No one cares about peach ball
Still happened first
Copy and paste much?
Not as bad as what you blew…
Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitoooooooo
Great manager awesome guy one of my favourite managers of all time !
No brainer here.
Typical Indians move….everyone else is extending players, but the Indians extend a manager…..
Why not? Hall of Fame manager!
Yeah, because a manager is the reason teams win…..sorry, but the players are the reason you win or lose a game. Put Francona on the teams the Indians ran out there in the mid 2000s and they still win 65 to 75 games, Like I said in past, this is a poorly run organization because the owner is trash. All this move is, is nothing more than a PR move to make the uneducated fans think they are doing something good when all they are doing is getting ready for a bunch of 3rd, 4th and last place finishes in the near future.
No wonder people complain about angry posts.
The only trash is this post.
And players sign when they know and like the coach/manager is sticking around a minute.
Have you ever been apart of a team before? Managers are crucial
Thomas? And just when we’d thought that we had seen the last of you…..you return like an itch on the sack.
Awe, you missed me!
I believe they think Maddon will be out at Chicago and that Epstein would go after him.
Is Francona close to Harper and Machado though?
In other extension news, the A’s and Rays and Pirates have extended their batboys for another year, from minimum to minimum plus 10 cents……there ARE opt-outs, however….
Chapman will get his extension soon, and I imagine Davis will as well. I hope.
I doubt it. Theyve been talking extension with davia wincw summer 2017 and no progress. Cjapmam would cost 100 mill or so or at least 85- 90.
I think the A’s should bring back MC Hammer.
Agreed. Did Rickey Henderson ever officially retire too?
After watching the Laureano show the last couple of nights, I’m not sure they need Rickey, at least defensively. He ain’t human, that one.
Frankie
How’s his health?
Glad to see it. The Indians are better because of having Tito as manager.
Though it has “worked out fine” in Boston with two rings since Franconia left, it was still a mistake for the Sox to let him go. Theo too.
Francona, not Franconia.
Darn autocorrect.
Having Tito is like having a extra player on the field. I hope he makes the HOF someday.
Best manager in baseball…..
“Under Francona’s leadership, the club has a .562 winning percentage — which is actually a bit shy of the .574 mark his charges in Boston managed during his run there.”
He is working with a roster budgeted at 60-70% of what the Red Sox had in real dollars, and he had to put up with 2-3 years of developing players with the Indians and teaching them how to play properly and win. The Red Sox sign top free agents and take on salary in trade. The Indians idea of a blockbuster signing is 3 years of a well past his prime Edwin Encarnacion, who they have to trade before his 3rd year because they can no longer afford him.
The fact that Tito can come so close to his Red Sox record with that group is astonishing. Anyone that thinks Managers (and pitching/hitting coaches) don’t matter is missing out on why some teams win, and why some players suddenly become valuable after years of treading water.
It helps that the Indians are in the AL Central, but they have gone out and won It most years.
hooked on pain killers he cannibalized himself in boston
This is awesome, great manager. Good decision Cleveland.
Good signing, because I don’t think any CLE fan ever wants to return to the dark days of Manager Manny Acta sleeping in the dugout during games or Eric Wedge getting confused and forgetting that a game was even going on.
Not even to mention Charlie Manuel firing himself.
I wonder if Sandy will continue to stay on his staff? Always wanted to see him get the opportunity to lead the team.
Alomar is overrated too….there is a reason he has never been hired by another team all these years.
You know, it was so enjoyable when you were away. Please consider leaving again.
I see you have not changed, can’t handle the truth.
Why do you watch baseball?
I agree with everything suffer has said in this thread. I hope Alomar takes over for Tito and I had hoped there wouldn’t be any further asinine comments from Mr. Thomas Swanson.
All in all, I think Francona wins the popularity contest with players and fans, but if you live and die with the fortunes of the Indians, there are many faults with his situational managing on the field and the way he sticks with guys who just aren’t producing. One example: In our most recent game, with the Indians obviously struggling to score runs, we get a man on first, up comes Stamets who has clearly shown that he can’t hit major league pitching (current average, .000), he should have had Stamets try to bunt, instead of suffering another embarrassing strikeout. Wonder if he ever thought of it!
Good deal. Terry will fight fair as long as he don’t.
Terry is one of those managers who will always have a job as long as wishes to manage. Great guy. Great manager. Highly respected.
