Here are the latest notes on some health situations from around the game …
- The Tigers and lefty Matt Moore are hopeful that he won’t need to undergo surgery after being diagnosed with a meniscus injury, Chris McCosky of the Detroit News was among those to report. Damage to the joint was diagnosed after Moore experienced some issues in his last outing. While a procedure on the meniscus wouldn’t likely be season-ending, it would make for a fairly lengthy absence. With rather mild symptoms, Moore suggests he’s optimistic he can instead rehab briefly and then pitch through the injury.
- Orioles righty Nate Karns has gone on the injured list with a forearm strain, the club announced. The severity isn’t know, but it’s obviously rather worrying to see another arm issue for a pitcher that has dealt with significant health issues in recent years. Reliever Evan Phillips, who was acquired in last year’s Kevin Gausman swap, has been called up to take the open roster spot. Phillips struggled in brief MLB action last year but had a nice showing this spring.
- The Padres announced last night that lefty Aaron Loup and outfielder Franchy Cordero were headed to the injured list. Infielder Luis Urias is taking one of the open roster spots, thus putting another top San Diego prospect at the MLB level, with southpaw reliever Brad Wieck occupying the other. As Jason Freund of the East Village Times explains, arm issues drove both IL placements. The severity isn’t known in either case, but Loup’s forearm strain and Cordero’s elbow strain each echo injuries that those players dealt with last year.
- Red Sox ace Chris Sale isn’t one for excuses, but skipper Alex Cora did offer up a possible explanation for Sale’s otherwise concerning recent velocity drop. The star lefty was dealing with illness in the run-up to his last start, which reduced his intra-start work and may also have affected him on gameday, Cora told reporters including Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com (Twitter links). Sale’s velocity has trended back up in the first inning of today’s game, which is certainly a promising sign. There was also generally encouraging news for southpaw Brian Johnson, who was feared to have suffered a significant elbow injury. He’s actually just dealing with inflammation, so it seems reasonable to hope that a rest and rehab approach will allow him to get back to the mound in relatively short order.

Padres fans … what ever happened to Alvin?
Kwflanne
Haven’t heard from him since they closed down the mlb.com discussion boards. Although, there’s a few Facebook pages for Padres that I follow…. and I have my strong suspicions he’s in there trolling away haha

He acts a lot like burns tbh
Grizalt
Nah he’s nowhere near as bad as Burns
Kwflanne
I don’t know who burns is… but I remember Alvin. Only ones I really remember from the Padres page are Alvin, Spack, Ryan, Salt…. and maybe a couple other I’m forgetting. Don’t know who burns was

I was thinking he was padresfanforlife. He makes a lot of random negative comments without the ability to back them up.

Last years Kevin Gausman hosing is more like it. That was a horrendous deal for the O’s.

If the Orioles had been able to close the deal on Victor Victor Mesa like everyone expected, then it would not have been a bad trade at all. Also, had the previous regime had quality analytics and coaching and could have helped Gausman be a better version of himself, he would either not have been traded or gotten a whole lot more in return.

I agree on the intl $$$ part. We certainly should’ve gotten one of Gaston or Mesa. Though considering we had double the pool space the rays had who signed Gaston you’d think our FO might’ve had an inkling that these guys weren’t very interested in signing here. There’s really no excuse for the Gaston situation. And obviously our lack of analytics harmed a lot of our young arms. Also including o’dAy did nothing but drive the return down. Which is a classic orioles move.

Cora is going to get used to babying Sale who has accumulated some high stress mileage. Even the optimism for his velocity at the beginning of today’s game was offset by the drop in velocity a bit later on.
Trader Dave and John Henry will have their fingers crossed every inning that he pitches during the new contract.

Oh Mikeyank Mr. Yankee fan that’s like the pot calling the kettle black.

Hey Squirt. I thought you would be staying on the ice after your Sox started the season with such a frigid way. And come on now, in today’s times where pitching is so fragile have the Yankees mortgaged their future like the Sox did with David (avoid you whenever I can) Price or Chris (I’m not what I sed to be) Sale?
Looks like you will be opting out of baseball soon. Too bad for the former World Champions.
Your post must have been inspired by Mookie Betts’ final at bat today.
SWING & MISS.
GAME OVER!

Maybe you need another one “those in glass houses should not throw stones” i noticed you have started chirping again are you out of your mommies basement and have access to the internet again?

Sure are a homer mikeyyank. i can name off several games early on last season where sale had poor velocity and no rumors swirled that over use, high mileage, cutting back on his velocity had anything to do with it. For one? Check an early April game vs Chicago when Sale was sitting barely 90mph at Fenway. Still last year when season really got underway good he was ticking up to 99mph some games with his FB.
Boston might not want him throwing THAT hard once it warms up, but sitting mid 90’s and touching 96-7 with his wipeout slider is better than just about any other pitcher in the AL as it is.

Mikeyank55 – We all get that you love the Roman Empire…oops I mean the Yankee Empire (I believe they happened around the same time) but sharing your thoughts on the doom of the World Champions seems a bit pre=mature on April 10. Your team threw away it’s best asset in Girardi. You have a roster full of guys who spend more time on DL than most teams and you can’t play every game at home (a place no longer providing series wins like it used to).
Early chirping is a Yankee fan trait so it is expected but when are you folks going to realize that your team is NOT dominant any more. It’s been over 55 years since you’ve been dominant. Heck the Celtics Dynasty of the 60s took place AFTER the Yankee Dynasty ended in the early 60s. It’s over!! Now you are just an average team with a huge payroll and obnoxious fans that chirp, ALL THE TIME!!
How about just chirping after you win something? We can even extend that to allow you to chirp for the entire decade after you win something. Either way, there should be no chirping right now! Just crossed fingers that Judge doesn’t go on the DL again. He’s the one guy that gives you a chance at winning, a very very small chance!

That good feeling during the Red Sox ring ceremony and home opener didn’t last long. Sale does not look like the pitcher they were hoping for so far. He is not ready for the season, and not getting much spring training work in order to “save his bullets” was a mistake. Better to get more pitching against quality hitters in spring training and manage his workload during the season than what they have now. Red Sox Nation will be whistling by the grave yard during every one of his starts.

I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, but I’ve not heard of rehabbing a torn meniscus. If it’s torn, you have to clean it up or remove it. I suppose you could use a lot of anti-inflammatories, but using the knee typically is going to irritate the torn cartilage.

not true. doctors prefer p/t with tears and often it works when done properly. it can’t be further injured than already is – i’ve had two separate tears/surgeries.

Is anyone really surprised about the Nate Karns’ injury? He hadn’t pitched since 2017. smh The FO decision-making is highly suspect. Is anyone sure whether anyone over there knows what the heck is going on or how to run a baseball team? Yeah yeah..they’re rebuilding. But there doesn’t seem to be ANY rhyme or reason to what they are doing AT ALL.
