7:19pm: Reed elected free agency and then signed a minor-league deal with the Giants, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports on Twitter.
11:56am: Giants outfielder Michael Reed has cleared waivers and been assigned outright to Triple-A Sacramento, as first reflected on the Pacific Coast League’s transactions page. Because he’s been outrighted once in the past, Reed will have the option of declaring free agency and seeking a different opportunity.
Reed, 26, went 0-for-8 in a brief four-game stint with San Francisco to open the season. The Giants picked him up near the end of Spring Training in a minor trade that sent fellow outfielder John Andreoli to the Twins, but Reed is out of minor league options and became a roster casualty following this week’s Kevin Pillar trade.
Reed spent the 2018 season with the Braves organization and had a monster season split between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting a combined .342/.423/.520 over 404 plate appearances. Despite that ridiculous stat line, he only tallied seven plate appearances at the MLB level. Atlanta placed him on outright waivers at season’s end, and the Twins not only claimed him but carried him on the 40-man roster for the entire offseason.
The 2019 season marks the fourth time Reed has seen action in the big leagues, but he’s totaled just 26 games and 45 plate appearances between Milwaukee, Atlanta and San Francisco. He’s a career .278/.388/.414 hitter through 869 plate appearances at the Triple-A level and can play all three outfield spots. A team with a less-defined outfield arrangement may show interest, but the Giants are currently committed to the trio of Pillar, Steven Duggar and Gerardo Parra, with Austin Slater, Mac Williamson and Chris Shaw all still in the organization as alternative options should a need arise.

Never consistently put up any power numbers. Just seems like a guy that won’t be able to transition to major league pitching. Honestly, I think Slater has the best chance, and that’s as a 4th outfielder/utility.
gmenfan
Sounds like you’re describing Mac Williamson.
imgman09
Reed 26 Games,he’s just beginning with good Stats in the Minors and plays all the OF Positions,Slater has had many chances and Williamson, you don’t give up on Power like that yet, glad your not the GM
Sk8rboi
Just what they need. More 3 point shooting…oh wait.
bhambrave
I think he deserves a shot somewhere. He’s only had 43 MLB at-bats. Maybe the Marlins or Cleveland?
Sadler
Clearing waivers means “there are 1200 players in MLB that we’d rather have than you right now” How would he get a better shot anywhere else? Every team decided they didn’t want him on their 40 man roster.
braves25
It is not about a spot on the 40 man roster…he is out of options so they would have to have him on their 25 man roster. So there are probably lots of teams ok with him being on the 40 man, but they dont currently have room at the MLB level.
Col_chestbridge
Really it’s fewer than that, as it just comes down to outfielders on the active roster. If you assume the average is about 5 per team, it’s more that there are 150 players teams would rather have.

Lol,Sad ler, kinda speaks for itself,Math was definitely not your subject better go back to Kindergarten or try something else because your not good at this!
BlueJayFan1515
Was English not your subject then?
rxbrgr
Still a good deal to swap him for Andreoli and have him as depth in AAA
Redwolves3
Reed was never the right fit for the Zaidi. Just another Zaidi chess piece who he hoped would turn into “lightning in a bottle “.
Best Reed become a free agent and find a team that better fits. Good luck.

The whole Giants lineup is complete booty, every single day the box score no runs LOL what a joke. Maybe they’ll get first pick next year in the draft
DougieJones
Is Reed just a younger Williamson?
Ninth 3 Year Plan
No, that is a lazy comparison.
Reed is a high OBP guy where Mac is not. Reed can also play around the OF including CF
DougieJones
But they both have red hair and strike out a lot… so….lazy or completely accurate?
slogar1
Great, the Giants just resigned another player nobody wanted. That home opener just goes to show how bad this team has gotten.
JayRyder
The home opener was a joke. I defend this team all the time. I think I was fooling myself. . The game was over in the first inning.
gmenfan
No, it wasnt actually. They loaded the bases twice, and had two runners on later and failed to plate a single run. Yet again, the Giants cannot hit with runners on. The least clutch team in baseball.
Pickle_Britches
The Giants management did a terrible job this offseason once again. Giants fans plan to see a bunch of games that they will not score any runs, just weak singles, a terrible terrible team. they need to revamp the whole entire lineup. It’s complete garbage. And their pitching staff I wouldn’t hold my breath on them doing good either. Plan on first pick in 2020 fellas
Ninth 3 Year Plan
This team and the past 2.5 years are on Sabean/Evans
Farhan has a big job ahead of him
DougieJones
Just part of rebuilding an even worse team
azcrook
Slater is head and shoulders over Reed and Williamson……once the “Connor Joe” experiment fails…..Slater should be brought up…..he can play all three outfield spots as well as 1st base.
Ninth 3 Year Plan
Slater is a ground ball machine
If he doesn’t effectively change his swing mechanics, he will not be long in this organization
Chris Shaw is another who is on his way out
Farhan cleaning house
BasesLoaded
I have no idea what it is with Slater and Giants Fans. The Giants could put him on waivers and not one team will cough. He has gotten many opportunities and some Giants Fans act like Slater is the next Mickey Mantle. The guy has no speed. He has no power and he is no where as good in defense as people claim he is. He’s a horrible second basemen and just as bad covering first. He is always having brain farts playing the outfield. Surprisingly he plays RF better than LF. That’s the only value he brings to the team. A mediocre RF’er with no speed or power.
Pickle_Britches
I guarantee play Shaw 500 Ab, he has 25 home runs with a on-base percentage around .800 D wise he’s avg. But would definitely be a much better upgrade over Parra. Right now they have no thump in that line up. Shaw would be a threat. That’s what they need. Not a aging singles hitter. They already have enough of them.
BasesLoaded
I like Shaw. The only problem is he plays positions where he’s blocked and he bats LF..The team has too many lefyy hitters. Teams just load up with LH pitching and crush the Giants that way. For Shaw to be a Lefty threat they need to get rid of Belt. Shaw, Belt, Panik, Crawford, Duggar all are all lefties bats. So are guys like Parra and Sandoval. I want Shaw up, but until they don’t have a more balanced lineup with Lefty/righty bats, I don’t see that happening. As it is the Giants are getting crushed by Lefty pitchers.
Pickle_Britches
Adam Jones hit his fourth home run today. He would have been a good candidate for the Giants but of course they go for bums like Reed, Ramos, parra and Joe.. Pretty sad that Jones has just as many home runs has the Giants as a team.. Farhan imo is a joke.
BasesLoaded
I don’t blame Farhan. Jones doesn’t like SF. He has been vocal about it. SF and Arizona are two different animals. Just because he’s doing good with Arizona it don’t mean he would do the same with SF. The real blame goes to Larry Baer. Farhan could go up to Larry Baer and present him a trade for Belt or Bumgarner and Baer will just shut it down. It’s not in his DNA to rebuild. He has said this in public. At the end of the day it’s Larry Baer’s Giants, not Farhan’s. Farhan got too much credit for what he did in Los Angeles. He took over a farm that had guys like Bellinger, Seager in the minors with young talent like Kershaw, Puig, Jensen all carryovers from the old regime. I’m not ready to blame Farhan, yet., but he is totally overrated.
Pickle_Britches
@speakstruth.. I beg to differ bub, I give Jones a better line and more hr as the Giants have faced a shat load of LH pitching, Jones hits lefties quite well. But one thing I agree, is that Farhan is TOTALLY overrated..
Hondo_Lane
El Gigantes el sucko
Hondo_Lane
Giants might not be as easy to make into a contender as the doodgers saber metrics guy
So. Cal. Giants fan
Only 8 games into the season and we are already 4 games back in the division (yes I know it’s early) but this team is going nowhere. By the end of April we will be 10-12 games out. Time to start the rebuild which should have happened in the off season. Trade Crawford, Panic and Belt. I’d keep Madbum because at least he has heart. Or at least think outside the box. Pablo is our most consistent hitter. Why not put him at first and move Belt to left?? It can’t be any worse than having Parra or Joe in left field.
gmenfan
The only player with the slightest value on that list is Bumgarner.
So. Cal. Giants fan
I agree, but It’s hard to trade the heart and soul of the team!
So. Cal. Giants fan
Furthermore, did you see all the empty seats for opening day?? Last year I had enter a ticket lottery at a chance to buy four tickets for the opening day game!
gmenfan
There were still primary market tickets available until late yesterday, and the prices on the secondary market dropped over the last three days. Unheard of …
trussell
There were about 31,000 people at both the Saturday and Sundays games. Yesterday was like watching molasses drip but at least I got some sun.
nuschler22
Giants might set a record for players to play OF.
