The Yankees announced today that an MRI showed inflammation in the right knee of infielder DJ LeMahieu. He suffered a contusion on Friday night and has been limited since. It’s a tough balance for the Yanks, who are already pressing numerous players into unexpectedly significant roles. While the preferred course might be to put LeMahieu on the shelf and bring in a replacement, the club is surely wary of keeping him out longer than needed and must also keep a close watch on 40-man roster pressures. It’s a tough spot — one that makes the club’s ongoing success all the more impressive (and frightening for the rest of the American League East).
Here’s more from the game’s eastern divisions:
- Brock Holt’s path back to the majors has encountered another roadblock. The Red Sox utilityman is now dealing with a shoulder injury, as Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com was among those to report. Details aren’t yet known — he’s due for a medical exam tomorrow — but it seems Holt came down with the ailment recently. He has been working back after suffering a scratched cornea. Holt, 30, turned in a strong .277/.362/.411 slash in 367 plate appearances last year. His absence is amplified by the fact that both Dustin Pedroia and Eduardo Nunez are also on the injured list at the moment.
- Braves outfielder Ender Inciarte left tonight’s game with a hamstring injury. Initial indications are that he is in good shape, skipper Brian Snitker told reporters including David O’Brien of The Athletic (Twitter link), but the true condition of the muscle will be more apparent tomorrow. It’s conceivable that a roster move will be needed. The club wouldn’t necessarily need to bring up an outfielder, though it’s already running out an eight-man bullpen. Adam Duvall surely wouldn’t mind an opportunity. He’s playing at Triple-A for the first time since 2015 and doesn’t seem to want to stay (.306/.388/.647 with seven home runs and 16:11 K/BB through 98 plate appearances).
- It seems that Mets second baseman Robinson Cano has avoided a significant injury after being struck by a pitch on Sunday. X-rays on his hand were negative, so it seems the club needs only to wait for the swelling to subside before it’ll be able to slot him back in the lineup. Cano is off to a solid but hardly overwhelming start to his tenure with New York’s National League entrant. Through 108 plate appearances, he carries a .270/.324/.430 slash line with three home runs. UZR and DRS have soured on his glovework a bit in the early going, though it’s tough to put too much stock in a short-sample run of defensive metrics.

LeMahieu was in the lineup both Saturday and Sunday (before he got pulled). He has been in action since Friday.

I even looked that up before publishing! But I … don’t understand the calendar or something? Or it’s just late. Anyhow, it’s fixed.
TheRoadDogg
Yankee fans owe their GM some sort of apology for this offseason, I remember when they signed Lemahieu, most of the yankee fand on this board bemoaned the move, he is one of their better players right now, and other lowkey signings like Urshela have paid off.
Badfinger
I liked the DJ signing when it happened. A contact hitter who is good defensively, two skills missing from the 2018 Yankees. I didn’t want Harper or Machado. Enough of the 10+ year contracts. I hate that they are stuck with Stanton for the next 9 years. Yes he has immense power but so many of his AB’s are non-competitive.
billysbballz
Wow I completely agree with you about Stanton. Only issue I had with Cashman was not trying to sign Brantley and that trade for Stanton will price to be an albatross.
Steven Chinwood
Yea don’t get two transcendent players. Stop with the what they spend crap already.
rocky7
The only Yankee fans that would have bemoaned the acquisition of a player with the calibre of DJ aren’t really Yankee fans at all….they just like to come around and post dumb stuff all the time. If you know baseball you know that sometimes a player like DJ just doesn’t translate his success to another team and you just have to accept that….a good example is Drury who seems to be finding his legs with Toronto.
The depth of the team beyond front line players is what gets a team through the 162 game season in the modern era and that is normally a mix and match of kids on the farm and cast off vets during the season.
thegreatcerealfamine
So if someone disagrees with a signing the Yankees make they “aren’t really Yankees fans”…interesting take. The ones bemoaning the signing were probably hoping they would’ve signed Machado instead, also the ones wanting Harper. I always love how some on here think they know what a real Yankees fan is.
User 4245925809
Agreed Cereal on skipping the signing of either machado, or Harper for what both were seeking. NY has a guy making that dough already and pretty soon, Judge will be after a 25m +/- AAV deal and he’s worth far more than either of those 2.
A lot of people think just come on here and babble the 1st thing pops into their head.
mikeyank55
I don’t think that we profess knowing what a real Yankee fan is Cereal. However we all know how a fake yankee fan is defined. Machado and Harper did not fit the Yankees needs period.
rocky7
That’s not what I said Mr Great Cereal Box….actually I was not in favor of signing either Machado or Harper because of the length of contract they wanted which always proves to be an anchor as will Stanton’s some day.
Negative press about DJ was my issue if you took the time to really read my post and the fact that this guy was a tru major league player and that it would be great if that translates to the Yankees after the trade.
Glad to see you and your 8 thumbs up think you have the key to what the “real” yankee fan really is!
rocky7
Please stop with the applause for this Cereal guy who thinks he is the voice of baseball. He didn’t comprehend a thing I wrote and adding praise to something as obvious as why the Yankees didn’t sign either Machado or Harper (length of contract decade) is no decision maker as to his expertise.
thegreatcerealfamine
Will a cookie curb your tantrum rocko. FYI you don’t get to decide what people applaud like you don’t get to define who’s really Yankees fans.
compassrose
I am not a Yankee fan and I hated the signing. I hate anything that makes the Yankees better. Lol
The Yankees should get ahead of these 10 year contacts and sign Judge to one now. That way at the end he won’t be s liability. Not sure how much arb and stuff he has left but he might give it up for 10 years $26 mill or so. Not sure his agent would allow it because he will probably get more when the Yankees have no more control over him. Here I go giving advice to make the Yankees better. I like Judge not his fault he got drafted by the Evil Empire.
mikeyank55
Why don’t you find a box of Cheerios so you can stop being a know-It-All knucklehead? You look like you live in Queens.
Perksy
Yeah can’t see him signing 10 years at that price, but I could see them giving Judge 6 years at $80 mi, something like that. Buying out the arbitration plus 3 years of free agency.
thegreatcerealfamine
mikeyank55 please enlighten us on how a “fake Yankee fan is defined”. I’m sure everyone will wait with the utmost anticipation for your explanation.
mikeyank55
Either you need glasses or a new antidepressant. Fake Yankee fans use post without thought, so they
cling on anything that is anti Yankee to prove that they are smarter than Cashman.
The question that is still on your plate knucklehead is when you will stop bring a know it all.
Melchez
DJ is a quality player. He’s very good defensively and can hit .300. He’s just not flashy enough for Yankee fans. They want the Robbie Cano/ Alfonso Soriano/ Starlin Castro kind of 2B.
Steven Chinwood
There’s true fans and than there’s straight up homers.
DarkSide830
the LeMahieu signing was fairly suspect given the monetary commitment given he wasn’t even going to start, and no one knew if he would hit outside of Coors. If not for the sheer number of injuries the Yankees have accured, it would not have been worth it.
jdgoat
Agreed. Obviously his production won’t keep up like it is, but he was a great fit. The Yankees are a team that doesn’t need to get anything out of his bat, and he’d still provide value paying anywhere in the infield.
mikeyank55
And as importantly Goat, DJ is a professional hitter who can influence other players by simply hitting the ball where it is pitched.
Launch angle is emphasized these days and what has been lost is hitting the outside pitch the other way. That’s something that Harper nor Macahdo know much about.
Begamin
I know i was meh about the DJ signing when it happened because I felt that there would be too many starting caliber players and not enough spots for open for them all once Didi came back but I obviously didnt anticipate 1000000 injuries in the first month of baseball.
I originally viewed it as a much better version of the Neil Walker signing. I hated the Neil Walker signing when it was in its infancy. The DJ signing I am kinda loving now
thecoffinnail
Just because the Yankee fans with the biggest mouths didn’t like the move doesn’t mean “most” of them did. He is exactly what the Yankees were lacking. They had tons of power in their lineup but didn’t have any batters who could hit for high average. He is the table setter they needed and is the perfect #2 hitter in their lineup when everyone finally gets healthy. Plus he is cheap, signed for only 2 years and plays multiple positions. I liked the signing from day one but thought Cashman should have gotten an option year as well. Several player signings have looked good for the first month of their contract though. Let’s judge this one in the offseason. Hopefully, he ends up more like Steve Sax than Tony Womack.
Zach725
Duvall hit another homer tonight, so he’s up to 8. If Ender has to miss time, it might be worth a shot to see if he has fixed some of his issues.
braveshomer
or Acuna in Center and Camargo in left on an everyday basis sounds pretty good to me
BravesCanada
I’d rather Duvall and keep Camargo doing what he’s doing giving JD, Markakis, Dansby, and Ozzie days off.
Mrtwotone
Charlie clutch deserves a start
MasterShake
I don’t know, he’s a great tool off the bench. In most situations a pinch batter comes in and I’m like well, at least you tried. When they call Culberson in, you feel like he’s going to actually do something with every at bat.
BravesCanada
I agree. Charlie is a great bench piece and Duvall was not. Duvall likely just couldn’t get into a groove with sporadic playing time.
pinballwizard1969
This could very well be the last season Holt will be in a Red Sox uniform. He is out of minor league options so his roster spot is pretty valuable.
123redsox
He’s been out of minor league options. 100% irrelevant given he has been a productuve fixture in the majors for already half a decade.,
User 4245925809
Agree. Holt will probably get a bit more as a decent utility player this offseason than Boston is willing to pay, a shame, but Sox realize they have Lin and probably Marco hernandez ready shortly. Hernandez plays 3b/SS/2b and Lin plays all those, plus CF. Lin will be out of options next year as well.
It’s possible Holt will take less to remain in Boston, but believe he can get 6-8mAAV over 2-3y as a FA.
Michael Birks
Michael Chavis has done a great job playing out of position, and he’s hitting a bit…I’d rather see him stick then bring up Hernandez
Michael Birks
And Lin is already on the big league roster
tharrie0820
Speaking of last night’s Braves game, how about that Mike Soroka? Glad to see he’s recovered just fine from shoulder surgery
The Ranger Fan
Yankees, for a team that has been severely strapped by injuries, still holding It together,Way to go Yankees, This was my team growing up because we had no team till mid seventies, The great Thurman Munson,Catfish Hunter,Craig Nettles,Doc…….Those were the days,I still have The baseball cards.
Scrap1ron
What other team could sustain the injuries that the Yankees have had and still be in contention. The WAR of their injury list exceeds that of many teams.
chippahawk
Give Duvall the shot he needs and deserves after getting back on track. Best case scenario, he lights it up and makes it almost impossible to put ender back out there. You’re only adding trade value and in the best of both worlds, possibly making ender available for a solid reliever.
Listen, I love ender but his bat is definitely frustrating. All he needs to do is try to hit up the middle and/or go the other way and he’d be just fine.
Ive long been guilty of wanting another thumper like Duvall can be in the lineup and not losing much with his D either.
BravesCanada
This.
Duvall as an everyday player will likely be much better than what we’ve seen since coming to ATL. No point in bringing him up as a bench bat.
Atlbravesmania
This Braves team sucks
Psychguy
It was just so important to learn that RS are no longer playing a video game in their club house. I mean what could be bigger news?
