The Cardinals announced today that outfielder Tyler O’Neill and righty Mike Mayers are both headed onto the 10-day injured list. The former suffered an ulnar nerve subluxation in his right elbow while the latter has a strained lat.
A trio of reinforcements is headed onto the MLB roster: infielder Yairo Munoz along with righties Ryan Helsley and Giovanny Gallegos. This is the first call-up for Helsley. Outfielder Drew Robinson was optioned down to create the final opening.
The severity of the injuries isn’t yet known, but both come with at least some potentially for extended absences. Ulnar nerve issues aren’t necessarily huge problems, particularly for non-pitchers, but the Cards will obviously want to figure out the root cause and make sure that O’Neill is fully past the problem before bringing him back into the mix. In the case of Mayers, it’s impossible even to guess at a timeline without knowing the grade of the injury, but lat strains can be rather problematic for hurlers.

That explains O’Neill’s terrible throw last night lmao
StlSwifty
I was instantly worried he hurt himself on that throw when I saw it. Get well soon O’Neill!

So glad we got Marco!!!!

On the IL with a bruised ego after that throw.

What explains his glove made of steel?

Munoz andb robinson have been optioned twice this year. Robinson was just called up yesterday in favor of munoz. Why so much shuffling
willyg60
Robinson was called up Gallegos was optioned
Bunselpower
Munoz was not “optioned” twice; that is not the way option years work. He had an option year exercised for 2019 the first time he was sent down and is now free to be sent to AAA as many times as the frequency limitations allow.

When Munoz was called up as the 26th man of the Mexico series, that did not count against the 10-day minimum after he was sent down. After that series, they wanted another player capable of playing the outfield immediately with Bader day-to-day and only 4 other outfielders on the active roster. However, since Bader did not go on the IL and the 10-day period for Munoz still wasn’t up, they couldn’t pick their preferred option in Munoz, so then went with Robinson instead. These new injuries then gave them the opportunity to switch Robinson with Munoz, as that 10-day minimum is waived when someone is placed on the IL.

Warning: Grammar complaint…. I feel like this website uses the devise of “former and latter” WAY too often. It seems to be your absolute favorite little writing trick. Like you go out of your way just to use former and latter instead of plainly describing that Tyler O’Neill suffered an ulnar nerve subluxation of the right elbow. I long for a direct statement to the point. Simple language is better. Quicker, clearer, to the point, and most importantly without the use of the words former and latter!

I agree, but I suppose we all develop our own penchant for communication styles the more we speak. That being said though, I am constantly searching for alternative ways to make points, and I would like to think one that writes would perhaps be inclined to do so also. However, as it has been pointed out before, these writers are not highly paid journalists, so take the bad with the good.

you’re complaining about grammar while starting a sentence with ‘like’. woooooosh

Bad grammar is so millenial

I concur. I had actually grimaced over the same thing while reading the article.
To those who think it’s trivial: The reason the former/latter construction is frowned on by the literati is because it forces the reader to back up – to the prior sentence, in this case – to figure out who was former and who was latter. It’s never good to make your reader back up. Compare that to the simple “O’Neill suffered an ulnar nerve subluxation in his right elbow while Mayers has a strained lat.”
And even that sentence is wanting, because the tenses are switched in the same sentence, and ‘while” is used where the author means “whereas” (unless O’Neill and Mayers hurt themselves on the same play, of course).
These things are easily learned once by reading “The elements of style” and other such guides. They show respect for one’s readership, and for one’s craft. This is not grammar, it’s style. And quality writing is half of the coin of the realm.
Todd does have a nice writers voice though.

I was expecting something more serious than originally suggested regarding O’Neill. His throw was so odd, it didn’t surprise me to hear he had a significant injury. Sending Robinson down is a godsend, the dude just cannot hit. Helsley has great stuff, hopefully he can corral it. It would be nice to hear the degree of Bader’s hamstring, I am assuming it isn’t too bad or else another outfielder would have been recalled. Granted Munoz can handle the corner positions, terrific arm, but center will be a challenge, and I sure don’t want to see Fowler in center. I don’t want to see him in right either, but for the time being I guess he gets a longer look, but in 53 plate appearances he has 1 RBI, and is slugging .304. With all the lefties in the Brewer line-up, another lefty would have been nice. Says a lot about the Red Bird confidence in Shreve. But both Miller and Hicks are rested. Hopefully, Flaherty can give them innings today. Not expecting such from Wacha tomorrow. His last two outings have been rough.

I apologize, I didnt realize he accepted the assignment to Memphis. I spoke too soon

He’s a 2 WAR player at max, so without the DH available, he’s anything but an everyday player. He’s currently also the worst hitter on the team with a 53 WRC+, so he’s done less than Fowler from an offensive standpoint.
