As expected, the Brewers have activated reliever Jeremy Jeffress from the injured list. He had opened the year on a rehab assignment while rebuilding arm strength.
That’s good news for the pen, but the club surprisingly announced another shoulder ailment that impacts the rotation. Freddy Peralta is evidently dealing with a problem in that joint; details remain unknown.
Peralta’s spot on the roster will be occupied by fellow righty Aaron Wilkerson, who was recalled. The Brewers also optioned down righty Jake Petricka to make way for Jeffress.
Last night’s outing was another rough one for Peralta, who has failed to record more than ten outs in three of his four starts. He was lights-out in the other, an eleven-strikeout, scoreless gem, but carries a 7.13 ERA for the season.

Last season should have given Freddy all sorts of confidence and Corbin Burnes too. But they have both looked very shaky and you really have to wonder about the Milwaukee rotation. Big offense has covered for some horrible starts so far but that can’t last forever. They can’t bank on Jimmy Nelson, no way. Davies is the only one that has looked any good this year. It’s a concern that could become a real problem
twentyforty
It’s already a problem. 2-pitch pitchers whose success was largely max-out bullpen appearances. They aren’t ready to be starters and it’s going to only get magnified as the season progresses.
2id
Except Burnes is more than a 2 pitch pony. Out of the bullpen he could focus on his fastball and slider exclusively, similar to other relievers whose strength is 2 pitches. For someone who claims to know a lot about baseball, you clearly don’t.
zimerust
Shoulda traded for bumgarner
mikeyst13
Peralta’s biggest issue is he’s basically a 1 pitch pitcher, and that’s not going to play as a SP in the big leagues. If everything is working for him with the movement, deception, and location it’s a great pitch, but any little hiccup and the wheels can come off quick. Burnes on the other hand is all about control. He has good stuff, but he cannot locate right now and is missing in the zone way too often, hence the record HR pace he’s on.
Karlander
Yep and it’s trouble

Good analysis. Woodruff goes tonight. That is 3 unproven youngsters trying to stay in the rotation. That seems like an awful risky proposition. Brewers like the Red Birds need innings out of tonight’s starters. Jeffries will help, even if he hasn’t looked sharp in his rehab. Cards call up 2 unproven relievers too. I like the Cards’ chances tonight, Flaherty was lights out in his last outing. Not so optimistic come Thursday, Wacha has really struggled his last 2 times out.
mikeyst13
They’ve said that they don’t expect all 3 to stay in the rotation all year due to workload. If Nelson makes it back he’ll take one of their spots and they still have Chase Anderson and Junior Guerra out in the pen not far removed from effective seasons as SPs
Karlander
Chase Anderson has a whole history of inconsistency. Good luck with that
mikeyst13
He has a career ERA under 4 and never been over 4.39 (without counting the small sample size this season). Obviously not a great option, but definitely could be worse.
twentyforty
Nelson won’t make it back. His injury is career ending. He’s going to have arm issues from now on..the labrum itself is a brutal repair let alone adding cuff and other issues to it.

Nice prediction. Don’t quit your day job.

Too early to speculate too wildly but the Brewers decided to let pitching coach Derek Johnson go to the Reds because they weren’t willing to match the Reds offer. Something to keep in mind that maybe a few more bucks to a good coach is worth it instead of going cheaper with less experience. And let’s be real about Freddy, the brewers are the only team I’ve ever heard of that says oh this guy is gonna be a great starter cuz he throws belt high fastballs 90 percent of the time.
stevewpants
Also some of these new stats are worthless, i don’t give a crap if Corbin Burnes has an elite level high spin rate on his breaking balls if he’s giving up 3 dingers a game.
Karlander
You can already see the Crew will end up using Hader too much because you can’t depend on some of these guys. Burnes was very effective as a reliever and should stay in that role
mikeyst13
Spin rate is far from a useless stat. In most cases it directly correlates to lower hard contact numbers, he’s just gotta figure out his command and stop throwing middle middle.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Does Jeffress get the closer job, returning Hader to the Andrew Miller role, or does Hader continue closing?
mikeyst13
Eventually JJ moves back to the closer role, bit they already said they will keep him out of too many high leverage situations early on.

I’m in the camp that Dallas Keuchel has no one to blame but himself (and perhaps his agent) for his current predicament, but if I were a Brewers fan I’d be livid that he’s not already in Milwaukee. Obviously it’s possible they’ve tried and been rebuked, but man he makes so much sense for them.
mikeyst13
Peripherals have been slipping, wants a bigger contract than the numbers say he deserves, and wants at least 3 years. Can’t really blame them for trying out the young pitchers who showed promise, but may be time to start weighing other options.
stubby66
By mid May I think the rotation will be Chacin, Nelson, Davies, Houser and Woodruff. Put Peralta at long relief and have Burnes back to Knebels spot with Haders and Jefferess then you can have Guerra, Barnes, Brown and Williams to finish off the bullpen. Send Anderson down and move on from Wilson and Albers Oops I also forgot that Claudio is in our pen too.
brewcrewer
not a bad call, the Brewers had to see what they had in the young guys. this is the time to do that. If burnes can get his control sorted I think he stays. He is a stud minus 3-4 pitches a game. but when he misses, man he misses in a bad spot.
twentyforty
If that’s the rotation the Brewers will be scuffling around .500. Houser isn’t the answer and Nelson will never be back for a significant stretch.

This coming from a guy who when the Cubs were doing well, called Miller Park, Wrigley North. But when the Cubs got spanked, suggested MLB do something about the stadium. How old are you, 10?
