Per a team announcement, Braves righty Mike Foltynewicz will be activated from the IL in time to make his first start of the season tonight against Colorado. Right-hander Bryse Wilson will head back to AAA-Gwinnett.
The hard-throwing Foltynewicz, 27, whose 96.4 MPH average fastball velocity was tops among all NL starters last season, was sidelined at the end of spring with a balky right elbow. Atlanta’ll hope his return quenches what’s been a parched Brave rotation in the early going – the club’s starters have thus far posted the NL’s highest walk rate, at 4.08 men per nine, with an ugly 4.50 xFIP that collectively ranks second-to-last in the Senior Circuit.
With shaky command from rookies Wilson, 21, Kyle Wright, and Touki Toussaint, plus the all-over-the-place nature of the recently demoted Sean Newcomb, Atlanta may need to move rotation help to the top of its mid-season shopping list.

Meanwhile Jesse Biddle is still in the pen. I understand he is a LHP, but it doesn’t really matter when he can’t get them out.
bravesiowafan
They are betting on his upside for a turn around. It worth giving him a little more leash before cutting him
mj-2
He’s walked 8 people over 2.2 IP in his last 6 outings.
Curious how long this imaginary leash actually is
bravesiowafan
And he played 60 games last year with a 3.11 era
cmtaylor98
He is out of options and would have to be DFA’d, exposing him to waivers. I don’t think they want to give up on him just yet. I agree that he and Sobotka have to throw more strikes or they won’t have a choice but to move on. I like Wilson in the pen, but they have to get 3 new pieces, 2 of which need to be LHP’s.
mj-2
So is the leash 180 walks in 60 IP pitched or…. ???
Didn’t exactly answer my question
braveshomer
apparently yes lol…that’s one heck of a leash, it’s one those retractable leashes that I guess doesn’t have an end
SalaryCapMyth
More than 2.2 innings?
BravesNutter01
Biddle’s last six appearances – 6.75 ERA with 8 walks in 2.2 innings of work. That’s quit a long leash.
Backatitagain
It just can not get any worse for decision making. Bryse Wilson showed last night that we have one relief pitcher who can throw strikes and get people out. So, what do we do send him to Gwinnett. Unbelievable! Why didn’t Sobotka and Biddle go to Gwinnett instead? Should have sent those two down and brought Newcomb back up for the pen in lieu of Biddle. #TANKING
bravesiowafan
Maintains more value by having the prospects start. The top values essential for trade deadline
RunDMC
Sure maintain value at the expense at fielding your best team. Wilson would need to do very little to stay in the pen and help solidify it in lieu of Sobotka and Biddle, the former that still has options. At the current rate of good RPs, it would be cheaper to use some top prospects not with a rotation spot.
mj-2
Maintain more value for what? We’re too afraid to actually trade anyone. Or were you not paying attention in December?
petfoodfella
I do think some of these prospects should be in the pen.
jorge78
Tanking? They’re 12-13.
Strike Four
If Fried-Soroka-Folty-Gausman-Teheran all stay healthy they won’t need much more rotation support. That bullpen, however, still has a massive, Kimbrel-sized hole in it.
efax0977
Unreal….so Biddle who hasn’t recorded an out in 3 of his last 5 or so outings stays up because he is out of options. Dude is Sam Freeman all over again.
efax0977
Our bullpen is so bad we have to use Tomlin in fairly large leverage situations, because he can throw strikes and won’t walk the oppositions entire team
braveshomer
Biddle goes on ‘IL’ and they’re bringing Caryle back up?! Why not keep Bryce in the pen…makes no sense
braveshomer
this bullpen is atrocious…please stop with front office apologists and development jargon comments. it’s enough and any of you that defend are the same guys who constantly make excuses why your girlfriend keeps cheating on you
skip tracey
lol
bravesfan1970
My girlfriend is cheating on me? Again? With who?
