The Orioles are listening to offers for reliever Mychal Givens, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (video link). On a rebuilding, talent-deprived club that doesn’t have many enticing trade chips, the right-handed Givens stands out as someone who would draw plenty of interest on the market. Givens hasn’t been elite at preventing runs since last season, having posted a 4.06 ERA in 88 2/3 innings, but he has generally done well in that department (3.18 lifetime ERA) while logging appealing strikeout and walk rates (10.46 K/9, 3.34 BB/9) in 272 frames since his 2015 debut. The soon-to-be 29-year-old is also affordable ($2.15MM salary) and controllable through the 2021 season.
More from the AL….
- The Twins have placed utilityman Willians Astudillo on the 10-day injured list, Dan Hayes of The Athletic tweets. Astudillo left the Twins’ win over Baltimore on Saturday with left hamstring tightness. The 27-year-old collected a hit in his sole at-bat Saturday, continuing a trend of terrific production in the majors. After recording a .355/.371/.516 line in his 97-plate appearance debut in 2018, Astudillo has come out of the gates with a .327/.340/.531 showing in 53 PA this year. The big-bodied Astudillo has become a folk hero in Minnesota thanks in part to that output. It helps that Astudillo has lined up all over the diamond with the Twins, having racked up multiple appearances at catcher, first base, third base and in the corner outfield this season alone.
- Yankees manager Aaron Boone believes injured outfielder Clint Frazier will be able to return in 10 to 14 days, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com relays. Frazier hit the IL on Thursday with an ankle injury, making him the 15th Yankee of the season to land on the shelf. It was especially unfortunate because Frazier, 24, looked to be in the early stages of a breakout campaign. He got off to a .324/.342/.632 start with six home runs in 73 PA, which was welcome production for a Yankees club whose outfield was annihilated by injuries even when Frazier was healthy.
- The Rangers will shut left-hander Taylor Hearn down for at least three weeks, per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The 24-year-old went on the IL on Friday with elbow tightness, though Grant notes an MRI didn’t reveal any acute structural damage – just inflammation. Hearn made his major league debut Thursday against the Mariners, who teed off on him for five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks in just a third of an inning. Still, Hearn ranks as one of the Rangers’ best prospects, so it’s no doubt a relief for the team that he has appeared to dodge a ruinous injury.
justinkm19
He walked 4 batters. I’d hardly say they “teed” off on him.
jbigz12
When Hearn was anywhere near the zone (Which wasn’t very often) that’s exactly what they did.
jorge78
I know. I watch the Rangers regularly and it was ugly. The team is full of holes. Why they love Odor (bad smell) and Deshields is above my pay grade. They need to go. Give Calhoun a chance. The pen is terrible, and the starters are mediocre. It’s going to be a long season.
dudeman40
Bringing up Hearn was an awful idea! If the emphasis was on winning games then go sign Keuchel.
I can live with this year as long as they stick to the plan. Leaving this kid out in the cold they way they did was awful!
BOO on the Rangers for this one.
madmanTX
You’re all wrong. The team isn’t exactly a $200 mil payroll playoff contender. It’s a team of high risk players and a transition team only, so go watch the Yankees or something. As far as Calhoun, if he hadn’t stunk it up in Spring Training, he’d be with the team.
jorge78
Well, a guy can dream can’t he? I’m not watching anybody else, a real fan doesn’t do that. Ugh. I just hope the transition works.
Guess I got spoiled with the recent years of success. Is that who I see in the mirror? Oh, the horror! I’m sure Daniel’s knows what he is doing.
Carry on Rangers…..
CursedRangers
In regards to Odor, he is has several stats that are eerily similar to Chris Davis.
rangersfan29
We don’t talk about that
bleacherbum
With how much the Padres have used Kirby Yates and Craig Stammen this year, Givens makes a lot of sense. He can bolster what is already a strong relief until at next to nothing in terms of salary.
jonnyzuck
Nooo Astudillo was fun to watch
jorge78
He will be back soon!
jbigz12
Oh man take givens out of the orioles pen and we might not have a guy down there who can get 3 outs. It’s going to be rough but it is the right move assuming we get solid value for him.
thecoffinnail
They can move Chris Davis to the pen. He has to be better as a full time pitcher than as a hitter.
dimitrios in la
Yes Givens getting traded makes some sense but to say “we might not have a guy down there who can get three outs” presents a couple questions: are you serious when you say this, and if so do you watch any of the games the Orioles actually play?
jbigz12
Dmitrios, first off no. That’s not a statement that should be taken literally. Second off we are 10-18 and I believe have the majors second worst bullpen. I’m not fond of your opinions either but please don’t attempt to refute how awful our bullpen has been.
jbigz12
We have 2 relievers with a FIP below 4. One of them is Evan Phillips who is averaging 6 walks per 9 inning. Paul Fry is about the closest thing we have to a consistent reliever.
I’m legitimately wondering if you ever watch orioles games. I think you may but you’re clearly incapable of looking at this team objectively. The bullpen was a perceived strength and it’s been the furthest thing from that.
dimitrios in la
Hey, if your statement isn’t to be taken literally (or even remotely close to that) that’s mildly reassuring—even if your routinely impulsive and dismissive commentary re the O’s is not.
The cumulative numbers on our bullpen are quite awful (and will likely get worse if guys like Hess, Bundy and Cobb don’t pitch substantially better) but there have been some outstanding moments from several guys—hence my questioning whether you even watch the team play.
jbigz12
Lmao. There’s been some outstanding moments. Thanks for your insight. They’re a big league team, are you impressed when big league players occasionally perform? The starters getting an early hook doesn’t help things but even when they do not Hyde has a horrendous time building a bridge because we don’t have reliable arms.
He leans on Fry and Givens to close out games because the rest of the group is so volatile he cannot trust them. Tanner Scott can be dominant but usually he cannot find the strike zone. I can call a spade a spade. However if the player has an oriole bird on their cap you seem to have a hard time seeing their downfalls.
Ironman_4life
Ive watched 26 of our 28 games. Its bad and it was expected to be bad. Just my opinion but the Orioles are fielding a AAA team.
jbigz12
Thanks Ironman. I would hope It’s been clear to anyone watching the games that this bullpen is bad. We found John means out of nowhere this year. That’s about the only positive we have on the pitching side. Paul Fry has continued to be pretty good but I figured that was a given. Tanner Scott is the same guy who occasionally dominates but often struggles with control. Castro has finally regressed as his underlying numbers have been calling for since he’s been here. Hess and Bundy are terrible starters. Jimmy Yack throws a straight 95 mph heater and can’t strike any major leaguers out. He is as useless as Castro in my opinion.
You’d have to look real hard to find anymore positives than that. Offensively there’s been some positives but this pitching has been horrible anyway you slice it.
jvent
Mets need pitchers relievers and starters Need help lol
mikeyank55
You are right jvent…however no pitchers nor starter will really help. The Mets need NEW Owners and a REAL GM, not a make believe agent who can fast talk the owners in the heat of the moment.
TwinsVet
Only Steve Adams is qualified to speak of Astudillo’s lore…
merrougemayor
Our team the Rangers is only short 4 Starters & 2 Good Relievers to become a WC Team !!!!
jorge78
MadmanTX has it covered.
He knows what the situation is.
Situation Normal All Fowled Up…..
