Padres left-hander Jose Castillo will be sidelined for an estimated six-to-eight weeks to recover from a flexor strain in his throwing arm, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes. Castillo began feeling forearm tightness last week, which caused San Diego to shut down his bullpens and then ultimately place him on the 60-day injured list today. Needless to say, any type of forearm injury is cause for concern, though the team is still “confident” that Tommy John surgery won’t be required. The 23-year-old Castillo made his MLB debut last season and immediately delivered results, posting a 3.29 ERA, 4.33 K/BB rate, and a whopping 12.2 K/9 over 38 1/3 innings out of San Diego’s bullpen. With Castillo on the IL, the Padres’ top left-handed options consist of Matt Strahm and the recently-signed Aaron Loup, with former big leaguers Eric Stout, Kyle McGrath, and Brad Wieck also available in the upper minors.
Some more from both the NL and AL West divisions….
- The specter of what Manny Machado or Bryce Harper could land in free agency theoretically loomed over the extension talks between Nolan Arenado and the Rockies, though the Machado/Harper situations “had a lot less to do with it than you might think,” Rockies GM Jeff Bridich said in an appearance on Inside Pitch show on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (Twitter link). While both the team and Arenado’s camp were obviously cognizant of the larger market forces at play, Bridich said “There were never any sort of deadlines or caveats put in going ’Hey, we need to know this first before…’ We just focused on our business at hand, and I think that’s why we ended up getting what hopefully ends up to be a great deal for everybody involved.”
- Now that Arenado has been locked up to the biggest contract in franchise history, the Rockies don’t have any more big extension candidates on their radar for at least a couple of years, Kyle Newman and Jeff Bailey of the Denver Post write. Colorado’s top young stars are still controlled through arbitration or have yet to even reach their arb years — Trevor Story and Jon Gray are controlled through the 2021 season, while Kyle Freeland and German Marquez aren’t eligible for free agency until after the 2022 campaign. This doesn’t mean the Rockies couldn’t explore a long-term deal in advance, though it’s worth noting that Arenado and Charlie Blackmon both only signed their extensions when they were a season removed from the open market. Looking at Colorado’s long-term payroll, Arenado and Blackmon are the only players guaranteed salary beyond 2021, several of the team’s other big contracts (Wade Davis, Bryan Shaw, Jake McGee, Daniel Murphy, and likely Ian Desmond) come off the books after 2020 or 2021.
- The early start to the regular season for the Athletics and Mariners (who play a two-game series in Tokyo on March 20-21) has also pushed up some roster deadlines. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the A’s will have to decide by March 14 whether or not minor league signees Jerry Blevins and Nick Hundley will make the MLB roster. Otherwise, Blevins and Hundley each can opt out of their minors contracts. It could be a moot point, however, as “Blevins and Hundley both appear to be near-locks to make the team,” Slusser writes. Hundley’s inclusion could leave Josh Phegley as the odd man out of the catching mix, and the out-of-options backstop is a good candidate to be claimed off waivers, multiple scouts tell Slusser. Oakland’s early start doesn’t extend to out-of-options players, however, as the club has until March 28 (when their regular season resumes) to decide on Phegley, Frankie Montas, Aaron Brooks, and other players who can no longer be freely optioned to the minors.
- Shohei Ohtani has moved from hitting off a tee to hitting soft toss, as the Angels slugger continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The Halos are targeting a May return for Ohtani, though manager Brad Ausmus told MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger and other media that the unique nature of Ohtani’s two-way status makes him “patient zero,” and thus “he doesn’t really have a set schedule. He is making the schedule for future Shohei Ohtanis.” Ohtani obviously won’t pitch this season, and he’ll be limited to DH-only duty once he does return to the team’s lineup.

The FA I thought, had least chance of forego player opt outs, was the only star FA who ultimately got no player opt-out lol
Really, Boras? Not even a “swellopt” contract?
xabial
thought had least chance of forgoing* player opt outs.
Shocked, agreed to 13 year commitment… No options
cubsfan2489
Ryan, I mean X, please go drink your ba-ba and do us all a favor and don’t come back.

Hahaha
James1955
Some fans want opt outs so that star players will play for their team.
xabial
You just exposed me. 😮 busted
dont think Harper trade happens in my life. Yanks didn’t learn past mistakes. sign ‘em young, not old.
Just like them not signfing Carlos Beltran (the first time) I’m sure they’ll regret not signing a 26 year old LF
jorge78
Come on xabial. It’s what Harper wanted. He wants a 15 year mortgage and not have to move until it’s almost paid off!
Cat Mando
“Really, Boras? Not even a “swellopt” contract?”
What was Boras supposed to do….force him? If you read what has been said, Harper prioritized length of contract first as he does not want to go through FA again. To show his commitment to that stand he, and he alone said no opt-outs.
Based on levels of cynicism people can chose to believe it or not, but there are some players who prefer to stay somewhere long term. I would imagine that those who chose not to will also hold firmly to the mantra that “no one wants to sign with the Phillies” or “every player would rather suit up for NY or LA”.
Grizalt
Having an opt out can only benefit a player. He doesn’t have to opt out. But it seems he was purely interested in the total guarantee and was willing to concede the opt out in order to maximize the total guarantee.
boltz82
Exactly! Choosing not to have a player opt out is insanity. I would never move my family to another city/state for a guaranteed 13 years. You can get there not like the location and be stuck. The reality is most likely that the only way for Harper to get the largest contract, which certainly seemed a priority to him, was to forgo opt outs. Machado’s signing made much more sense for the player. The ability to opt out certainly suits him and all but solidified that Machado will earn more over the course of his career than Harper will. At the end of the day though Machado deserves to as he is a better ball player than Harper is.
Grizalt
You don’t know that Machado will make more than Harper! If anything I’d bet against Machado opting out. Other Padres fans are saying they hope he opts out and the general rule is that if you hope a player will opt out, he won’t. Look at the players who had opt outs and actually used them. None of their teams wanted them to opt out.

Castillo looked good last year. Hopefully he can avoid TJ surgery. Maybe this keeps Strahm in the bullpen and gives a little bit more of a window for one of Quantrill, L. Allen, or Paddack to get into the rotation. Would be intrigued to see how Strahm holds up in the rotation, he’s got prettt good stuff and a good mix of pitches…. but he was pretty good out of the pen last year…. so maybe he’s best suited there for now. Whatever the case, just keep Erlin out of the rotation please!
davidcoonce74
I think the Padres should go full Tampa Bay-style and utilize openers and bullpen guys. They had the 6th-best bullpen of all time in 2018, and Preller and Balsley seem to have a remarkable talent at picking up pitchers off the scrap heap and turning them into fantastic relievers – Hand, Yates, Strahm, Stammen, Stock, etc. Run a bunch od marginal arms out to “start” games – they have a few of those guys already, like Lyles and Lauer and Lucchesi, and get them out early and then go to the bullpen. The Brewers won a division with this approach, and there’s no reason the Padres couldn’t think outside the box too. They have added a bunch of smart baseball people to the front office in the last year, and I truly hope they move more towards the Brewers/ Tampa model, because starting pitchers are expensive and they break. Bullpens are cheap.
nypadre66
Lyles has been gone since the trade deadline last year; released at the same time Tyson Ross was let go. As long as they’re going to carry 13 or 14 pitchers, I agree with your concept. Seems a lot of their starters over the past 5 years have tired badly and fallen apart in the 5th or 6th innings. Tell them they’re going 4 or 5, let them go hard and get them out.
Swinging Friars
The Padres have been made up of mostly old dudes and reclamation projects over the last 10 years…
My hope is they will soon turn their focus to the rotation. Fresh arms should turn that trend around
boltz82
I agree. But I see a change coming with the arms we have in the minors. Allen, Paddack and Quantrill are close with Morejon, Gore and others behind. If three of those guys pan out and can be paired with Luchesi and Lauer then I can see the rotation being good. I would like to see the Padres pick up Keuchel still or Kluber via trade (although that ship has in all likelihood sailed). I think one of those two could keep some pressure off the young players and provide some tutelage. Similar to what the Braves had with Maddux and Glavibe, Smoltz and Avery.
Grizalt
TIL that Jordan Lyles plays for the Padres

Looking forward to Ohtani hitting more than Harper.
macstruts
Ohtani does look like a better hitter than Harper.

Wonder if Phegley is a good candidate to be flipped to KC? Recognize that it would essentially be for a lottery pick, but better than just letting him go for nothing.
Lefty Grove’s right hand
I may be alone here, but I would want Oakland to hang on to him. He was always a offense first player in the minors and the A’s value his defense behind the plate too. He tweaked with his approach to the plate this offseason, so let’s see if he can turn his bat around.
pd14athletics
I’m with you. I have a feeling our thoughts won’t be shared by many A’s fans, but I really hope they keep him. Him getting bumped because Hundley and Herrmann makes no sense to me. I also feel like Phegley’s background with pitchers in majors and minors would have value, but it doesn’t seem like it does. With health, familiarity with pitchers, offensive background that hints at shining a bit this year, strong arm – I’m not sure why he’s not penciled in for breaking camp with A’s.
cito's mustache
I don’t think Brad Ausmus knows what “patient zero” means…
GeoKaplan
Yes, a really regrettable statement by Asmus.
PiratesFan1981
Ohtani is overrated and waste of resources. Funny how he blew his arm out so quickly.
Cat Mando
“Funny how he blew his arm out so quickly.”
He trained to be a flame thrower since he was a kid and was throwing at the 97-100 mph range since he was a teenager. Max effort and stress on the UCL all of the time. How is that “funny” considering more TJS’s are preformed on teens in the US than on professionals.
prov356
You’re right. A guy who performs well enough to win rookie of the year while earning the league minimum is overrated and a waste of resources.
davidcoonce74
Nothing “funny” about a serious injury, and he was an elite hitter and elite pitcher during the time he was able to take the mound.. Not a waste of resources at all.
Equinsu Ocha
does anyone know what the rate of TJS is like in Japan? do Japanese pitchers go through the same issues?
its_happening
At one time, possible still to this day, there were no restrictions for pitchers in high school. No pitch cap and I am not sure about an innings cap.
The better questions is, how many players in Japan NEED Tommy John Surgery? I remember reading somewhere that pitchers opt not to have the procedure.

Bridich should be handing out some early-career extensions instead of running everyone up against free agency and having to pay retail prices at that point.
