The Rockies have optioned right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman to Triple-A Albuquerque, according to Nick Groke of The Athletic (Twitter link). The move leaves Colorado with 28 players in Major League camp.
Hoffman, the Blue Jays’ first-round choice in the 2014 MLB draft, will face a pivotal year in 2019, as his future in the organization could be on the line in the coming season. While Hoffman’s stuff has never been questioned, his results at the MLB level have thus far failed to live up to expectations, as he has worked to a career 5.88 ERA in 139 1/3 innings. Hoffman’s demotion to Triple-A comes on the heels of a spring in which he has posted an underwhelming 6.63 ERA, though his peripherals provide more reason for optimism: Hoffman managed 8.1 K/9 while surrendering just 0.9 HR/9 and 2.4 BB/9.
With Hoffman in the minors, Harrison Musgrave will take the final spot in the Colorado bullpen. Hoffman should slot in as the Rockies’ first choice to join the Major League rotation in the event of injury. Antonio Senzatela, who will begin the season on the injured list, is also an option to fill in as a starter as needed. The Rockies will look for Hoffman to hone his command and tap into the potential that made him a high draft selection.

28. Whoa!

Looks like Harrison Musgrave made the team as the long reliever.

That tulo deal turned into a nothing for nothing trade.

They optioned the guy to AAA, they didn’t release him. Plus they still have Tinoco in AAA as well. It’s not looking like a steal by any means, but the Rockies still have 2 guys from that deal.

And they saved a ton of money, even after choosing to eat the remainder of Jose Reyes’ contract.

And Tulo helped the Jays compete while they were good.
So not exactly nothing for nothing as bigz suggested. Just ended up not being quite the blockbuster some may have thought it to be.

Obviously it isn’t over but it looked like the Rockies had put the jays over a barrel not that long ago. Hoff looks like a reliever at this point and I’m not sure tinoco is anything. Miguel Castro has been the best piece thus far just not for Colorado.
DarkSide830
id argue the best player going forward in that deal is the one in Baltimore.
hiflew
He might end up as the best, but he was horrible in Colorado and would probably still be. His stuff did not work in Coors.
goalieguy41
Castro is not that good
jorge78
And who is that?
(For those of us who have a life)
Ski to Coors
Miguel Castro, who plays for the O’s now. Rockies abruptly cut him without much explanation. Kinda left me with the feeling he got into an argument with one of the Rockies minor league coaches or player development guys and they simply cut ties without worrying about return trade value.
Gotta say, his 1.4+ WHIP through 185 career innings is not impressive.
jbigz12
I’m excited to see Castro work with our new staff and analytics team. He’s been fortunate to get the results he has in Baltimore but there’s clearly a lot of talent there. He’s not a real big loss for Colorado by any means but it was rare to see a guy with that much potential at age 21
To be on waivers. If he harnesses his stuff I think the orioles could have something. But if he pitches like he has been the luck will run out.

They have 28 in camp, but the 25 man roster is set now. 3 more are listed as in camp, but they are not going to make it. 2 of the guys in camp are catchers Tom Murphy and Brett Nicholas and both have been cut. The third is Antonio Senzatela and he is going to the DL.
angelsfan4life
I think the Angels should jump on him. His numbers would look better at Angels stadium. Wouldn’t cost much in prospects either
Ski to Coors
His command won’t play in any stadium.
