The Reds are expected to place righty Matt Wisler on outright waivers, according to Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer (Twitter link). He was reassigned to minor-league camp today, with Robert Stephenson and Wandy Peralta being chosen instead for bullpen slots.
Wisler was one of three players with MLB experience who headed to the Reds in the July 2018 swap that shipped Adam Duvall to the Braves. He’s out of options and therefore will need to be traded or exposed to waivers if he’s to miss out on the active roster.
While he has largely disappointed at the game’s highest level, Wisler has actually been rather good in brief action in a relief capacity since landing in Cincinnati. He allowed just three earned runs in 13 1/3 frames late last year and racked up a 16:1 K/BB mix in a dozen innings this spring.

I remember when padres fans were upset when he and other farms pieces were traded away
Only Turner and m. Smith were actually the only ones that panned out.
Crazy times. It goes to show you what prospects are. They are all suspects until proven.

You beat me to it man. This guy had mediocre minor league stats but was being hailed as the next Jake Peavy. As soon as I saw him pitch I knew he was overhyped. On that note, I think Rhymer Liriano is still bouncing around out there too.
andremets
Rhymes will be at Aaa for the Mets this year as a depth peice. I’d say Tebow is ahead of him on the depth charts
jkurk_22
Wisler falls into the category of: has the stuff to be very successful, but lacks confidence in himself to the point he constantly underachieves. Saw it constantly with the Braves
Friarfaithful117
I still think Jake Bauers has a shot at a decent big league career. I do agree that sometimes it is better to capitalize on prospect value earlier than later.
andremets
Except when you think it’s a good idea to capitalize on a guy like trea turner less than a year after drafting him!
DarkSide830
a lot like the Phillies if i may add. Yeah they gutted their system trying to keep contendinh, but they also gave up very little in the end. Cosart, Singleton, Taylor, Drabek, Gose were all busts, and Villar and Darnaud are only good when healthy. (which isn’t too often) Domingo Santana is meh and Happ didnt become good until after hitting FA. (of being traded to PIT, if you like) Ultimately, 2010/2011 were not the missteps people make them out to be, and perhaps if not for trading Trea, Padres fans might instead look back on 2015 as a nice change of pace, perhaps like the Mets and Reds may be trying this year.

I think what happened was Preller looked at his farm system in 2015, didn’t like it, so went all-in for a year. It failed, but since then he’s built one of the best farm systems and added pieces like Machado and Hosmer. Point being, there is a plan that was put in place in 2015 that is still going on in 2019.
csspackler
100 percent correct.
thecoffinnail
I remember them being a bit more upset about Joe Ross. Wisler was seen as MLB ready but never graded higher than a mid-rotation starter. I think he is going to be a late bloomer. He seems to have confidence issues and gets shaken easily. Both problems can sometimes evaporate with age.
jdgoat
Not a bad spring with a lot of K’s? Can’t be a bad relief option to start the year for a few teams.
petfoodfella
I would even say Atlanta could find a place for him in the pen.
DTD
Heck no, been there and done that
petfoodfella
As a starter. Not so much as a set RP. Either way, I won’t lose any sleep.
chippahawk
No AA, just NO..
petfoodfella
I doubt he does, but, the #’s he posted this spring as a RP could work IMO for Atlanta. But, I’d be fine if they didn’t bring him back.
chippahawk
The trade of epic fail for both sides.. Guarantee someone is guna give Duvall an actual chance to start and he’ll perform again, but you can’t say he’s not forcing the Braves’ hands to put him out there. He (like uggla) just werent born to pinch hit..
petfoodfella
Ol Uggla lol
thecoffinnail
Didn’t Uggla’s problem have something to do with deteriorating eyesight or am I thinking of someone else?
jbigz12
Orioles should be all over him if he makes it that far.
todd76
Someone will claim him on waivers. Kind of a surprising move he actually had a decent spring.
zachary08
Stephenson will be DFA after a month, Wisler, will be in AAA for another team
jbigz12
With no options left I’m not sure wisler will be in AAA. Some pitching needy club will take a shot on him and his prior pedigree. Royals,
marlins, Orioles, chisox all make sense.
TaylorLH
Well Texas needs a swingman in the bullpen, and between 3 TJ recoveries and Minor coming off a limited inning season someone is going to end up hurt.
DarkSide830
hey Indians and Red Sox…
bbatardo
Padres can get him back for free if they want lol
bravesfan
A rebuilding team should go after him. He’s still young and will show a flash of pretty good every once in a while. Most braves fans will tell you, it’s mostly mental with him. It will only take the right coach to make it click and he can turn into a pretty solid major league pitcher. I do believe bullpen is his best fit.
Rangers, O’s, White Sox, Royals all seem like decent fits for him. Especially if they somehow can sign him to a minor league contract.
losrojos
Please just move on from Stephenson already. He has shown every time he is called up that he cannot perform at the MLB level. Walks almost as many as he strikes out. Every year we hear how he worked on his location in AAA ahead of this call up and he goes on to walk 4-5 people every game. Would have rather seen Hergert in the bullpen.
joeshmoe11
He’s not expected to pitch in high leverage spots and he has MLB quality stuff so I have no beef with him in the pen. This is his last shot and if he can learn control then he’s a useful power arm. If not then no biggie, bullpens cycle thru guys all the time. I’m more annoyed with Peralta. They have 2 Lefty relievers already and he’s been pretty awful save for one month in his career
