3:31 What can the Giants do with the remaining free agency/trade market to make themselves contenders this year?
Tim Dierkes
3:32 Basically nothing. They’ve got one of the worst farm systems in the game, the FA market offers maybe 5 WAR if you sign everyone, and they’re a 75 win team.
LOL!

I was talking about this when they said the Giants were in on Harper. How do you sign a contract like that when you don’t even have a plan for 2019 or a farm to plan beyond it. Adding Harper would have still put them 4th or 5th in the division, cost a draft pick and further hinder their ability to trim payroll and rebuild, as well as tempting them to jump early to get Harpers best years. I have no idea what’s going on in San Fran. Think they lost their touch.

Padres
3:43 Do you think us signing Machado puts us right up there with the Rockies and Dodgers? Machado will take the pressure off players and that only makes us better.
Tim Dierkes
3:44 Maybe brought them even with the Rox, but I think the Dodgers are significantly ahead of all other NL West teams right now.
OK, gotta run – thanks for chatting!

Thought I’d share, for baseball fans. We hear a lot about how baseball is boring/dying off:
“According to the sports apparel company Fanatics, more Harper jerseys were sold in the 24 hours after launch than ever for any player in any sport. There is such a backlog of orders for Harper jerseys that some are receiving receipts that say the order will ship by May 31.”
DarkSide830
its proof enough in my mind that baseball doesnt need radical rule changes. baseball is doing fine as it is.

X: You see Keuchel getting 100M? Scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest possibility
Tim: can i go with 0?
jbigz12
I never ask questions on these but if I did I wouldn’t want it to be one that should’ve been rhetorical. Keuchel will be extremely lucky to get the Jake Arrieta guarantee at this point.
bravesiowafan
2 years til trouts a free agent and we are taking pointless trout questions this site has started a downward spiral for sure virtually no quality info coming from these chats anymore.
lesterdnightfly
Naturally this comes from a disgruntled Braves fan. I hear there are other kinds of Braves fans, but it’s yet to be proven on MLBTR.
canocorn
Also yet to be proven on MLBTR:
Nobody wants the ‘downvote’ option.
xabial
Speak for yourself.
Downvotes are a downgrade.
Now no-life creepers are reduced to posting: “downvote” and “dislike” w/o explaining
xabial
At least it forces simpletons, to out themselves
SalaryCapMyth
I dont see why they would remove a feature everyone just loved. I thought it was useless and am happy to see it go.
SalaryCapMyth
And you are a great example of why it needed to be done away with. Downvote was so spammed it lost all meaning.
trident
I always used the mobile site. Can’t miss what I never had.
Strike Four
That makes them really easy to ban though.
SalaryCapMyth
Prejudice and discrimination comes in all shades of ignorance.

The hype is real. In fairness, in the Philly region, the BH/MM talks started out just like this, 2 years in advance. Now that Harper is on board for 13 years, and his press comments, there is no stopping the talk. You won’t go a day without hearing about it in this area. Sounds like it will be spilling onto mlbtr. Our apologies, but for once it seems the stars are starting to align for the Phillies. Great time to be a phan! Every dog has its day.
SalaryCapMyth
You think this site is the only part of the baseball world excited and talking about Trouts free agency? Do a google and youtube search of Harper recruiting Trout and see all the reactions. Then maybe you will see just how out of touch you are.
InherentVice
Just thought you would like to know that I *did* make it to the Sandberg signing when that Target opened. And my first (unfortunately, not last) car accident was at Oakbrook Terrace, attending a Don Baylor signing (for the record, it was the other guy’s fault).
pustule bosey
the way people are talking about numbers, i just want to remind them. 500mm is a half a billion dollars…. a half a billion with a b
Melchez
There are a lot of terrible questions today. 500 mil for Trout? 40 mil for one year of Kimbrel?
xabial
glad my 100M Keuchel question, didn’t make your cut 😉
Melchez
I didnt see that… you know how your teacher would say “there are no dumb questions”… they were wrong.
Phanatic 2022
I don’t think bogarts will break 200m
jb19
That’s the price for the 12th best SS in the majors… no way he gets more than $200MM or more than $20MM AAV
Regi Green
I can see not going 5+ years for Keuchel & Kimbrel. But I don’t see the point in going for a 1 year deal either, with the draft pick attached to them.
Strike Four
Could Oakland get Danny Duffy for Frankie Montas, Mark Canha and Josh Phegley?
Fanof29teams
The league sets a salary floor of $100 millions per year. If the team does not uses the full amount in that given year, the remaining balance will go to a local charity chosen by the league. Lets say the team uses $80 millions, then the $20 millions will be given to the local charity and that way the league makes sure that the remaining money its not kept on anyones pockets but rather utilized to benefit the community/city where the team is from.
Fanof29teams
Chosen by the league so are not the same charity’s the team’s already gives $$ to , this should be extra money to invest in baseball diamonds , schools whatever , feel free to downvote me all you like lol
