Vandals Took The Handles
Indians-Cardinals did a prospect-to-prospect trade at the 2018 trade deadline.
Indians sent outfielders Conner Capel (A+) and Jhon Torres (AZL) to the Cardinals for their tenth best prospect, outfielder Oscar Mercado.
Indians wanted a OF close to major league ready.
Cardinals had Bader and O’Neil cracking the majors. Mercado would have been boxed out. Plus they loved Torres – wanted to draft him. High-ceiling potential. He was only 18 at the time of the trade. Cardinals can afford to wait 3-5 years for him to move through their farm system.

The pre-MLB extensions are an interesting phenomenon. Kingery was a good prospect but neither him nor Singleton came close to Eloy’s level of pedigree and hype. If that works out you’d have to imagine that clubs look to replicate that type of deal for top-10 type guys who tend to work out more often than not.
Hell if I’m the Blue Jays I take that framework and copy/paste it for Vlad Jr. and see if he bites.
