Righty Justin Grimm has opted out of his minor-league contract with the Indians, the club announced. He’ll head back onto the open market in search of a new deal.
Grimm, 30, was looking for a chance to bounce back after a brutal 2018 campaign. He performed well in camp, allowing just one earned run while compiling nine strikeouts and four walks in 8 2/3 innings, but obviously didn’t show the Cleveland organization enough to command a roster spot.
While the results haven’t been there of late, Grimm was a solid pen arm for the Cubs not so long ago. Between 2014 and 2016, he compiled 171 1/3 innings of 3.36 ERA ball with 10.6 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9.

I see what you did there

As an Indians fan this one surprised me a little. Alex Wilson couldnt strike anyone out and I thought he was a waste. But Grimm looked legit during spring and given his history it wasnt unreasonable to think he would at least be an upgrade over Dan Otero. That being said, they really should focus on their younger options with higher upside (Chih-Wei Hu, Jefry Rodriguez, Cody Anderson, Henry Martinez, Nick Sandlin) than continue wasting opportunities and money on guys who would only be here a year if they worked out.

My uneducated guess is that he’ll return to the Cubs on a minor league deal.

My educated guess is that would be a pretty grimm move on the Cubs part
Erik
He looked pretty grimm in his last MLB performance

He must not have taken into consideration that fact that he hasn’t been good for several years.

Anyone who has seen him pitch the last couple years knows this guy does nothing but get lit up. Tribe fans should be rejoicing.

No Tepara. No Axford. No Norris. Would be a not bad move for the Jays if his spring was solid.

As a Cubs fan I’ve seen a lot of this guy. He has a nasty curveball that will always keep teams interested. Unfortunately he likes to hang it right in the zone, and it often gets smoked. He has good stuff just no control.

Can Grimm reap the rewards following a decent spring?

I’d love for the Rockies or Dbacks or Padres to sign him… Dodgers would feast on him lol
