The latest on the Giants’ search for outfield help…
- Cameron Maybin’s release has left the Giants in need of a right-handed hitting center fielder who can complement Steven Duggar. To this end, the club has “looked into Blue Jays center fielder Kevin Pillar and Brandon Guyer,” Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle writes. Guyer was just released by the White Sox and has a long track record of success against lefty pitching, though he would be another imperfect fit as a center field option — Guyer has only 356 career innings as a center fielder, with a -1.4 UZR.150 and -4 Defensive Runs Saved in that relatively small sample size. Pillar is the much more accomplished defender, though not much of a hitter and also much more expensive than Guyer would be, as Pillar is set to earn $5.8MM this season. There’s also the question of what the Giants would have to give up to Toronto in a trade, though Schulman notes “it’s unclear whether the Blue Jays would entertain a deal.” San Francisco’s interest in Pillar dates back to earlier this offseason, though obviously no trade came together.
- The Giants and Rangers discussed a trade that would have sent Shin-Soo Choo to the Bay Area, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports (subscription required), though “the talks failed to gain momentum and at this point are barely active.” Choo would’ve been something of a curious add for the Giants, given that he has moved into more of a DH role in recent seasons. Choo’s bat is still potent (.264/.377/.434 with 21 homers in 665 PA last season), and while his glovework was below-average (-5 DFS, -3.9 UZR/150 in 507 1/3 innings as a corner outfielder) in 2018, the Giants might have felt the tradeoff was worth it, even if Choo’s defense would have likely further fallen off in Oracle Park’s larger outfield. The Giants could also have possibly seen the trade as something of a bargain, since Rosenthal notes that the Rangers “would have included significant cash” to cover the $42MM remaining on Choo’s contract through 2020. The talks didn’t revolve around the idea of dealing Choo for one of the hefty contracts (i.e. Jeff Samardzjia, Mark Melancon) on the Giants’ payroll.
- Also from Rosenthal’s piece, he provided a sneak peek at an interview conducted with Bryce Harper that will air in full after Fox Sports 1’s broadcast of the Braves/Phillies game on March 30. Within the interview, Harper discussed his lengthy free agent process, including the tidbit that his final decision came down to the Phillies and the Giants. In weighing his options with his wife Kayla, Harper said the couple ultimately decided that Philadelphia was the best fit. “It was nothing against San Francisco. They’re a great organization. It’s a great city,” Harper said. “It just came down to what I felt. And by that point, it was Philly.” Harper also said that the difference between spacious Oracle Park and the more hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park “was never really a factor” in his choice of teams.

I’ve been suggesting Pillar to SF all offseason. Nice to see a local reporter finally catching up lol
imgman09
It proves most local Reporters are Bogus,I’ve been hearing Pillar to SF since last years Spring Training
its_happening
Shhhhh….don’t say that. Coldtear needs to believe this was his idea (it wasn’t).
padresfan619 2
$167MM payroll and they are taking the table scraps from other teams to complete their roster??? I smell a last place finish in the West this year. It’s been a while since the Padres looked better than these Giants but this year is looking great.
arc89
Giants payroll issues is keeping them way to far down. can’t blame them for not spending when you have 5 bad contracts on the payroll. Madbum has not pitched very well so far this spring so trading him for a boat load of prospect is not happening. The good thing is they are not signing anyone to over priced contracts. Giant fans just need to hope a few large contracts have a great year and trade them away and start over.
antibelt
Padres pitching is garbage. Arizona took a hit player wise. Giants sitting in third with 78 wins. Not good, but hopefully can flip some guys at the trade deadline.

Fake trade time….
San Fran needs two things; a rebuild and a place for Buster Posey. Assuming Posey will be a Giant for life, playing some 1B and less behind the plate would make sense.
San Fran send Brandon Belt and a pitching prospect to the Blue Jays.
Blue Jays send Pillar, Justin Smoak and a minor Leaguer to San Fran. Blue Jays take on Belt’s contract.
Blue Jays then release Kendrys Morales to make room for Rowdy Tellez.
After Smoak’s contract is done or is traded at the deadline, Posey plays 1B.
Disclaimer: trade will never happen, nor would the Morales scenario. I am not sure why San Fran thinks they can contend nor do I understand why they’d be looking at Pillar at this point. At the same time, Blue Jays haven’t officially started the youth movement. Still too many vets on the team. Taking on Belt would be the bridge to when they decide to contend in 2022. San Fran really does need to think about Posey and their future. This would be one way to do that.

I’m thinking of flagging this post due to the severe level of absurdity risking the health of MLBTR readers…

Lack of explanation means you have nothing to contribute?
By the way, the Pillar rumor has been echoed by many Jays fans and others for months. Claiming you “suggested” this while patting local San Fran writers on the back is a little late. Months too late.
coldbeer
I need no explanation, you’ve conceded your “fake trade” is ridiculous. Lol.
its_happening
I didn’t say the word “ridiculous”. All I asked was an explanation and you gave nothing. Again, stop patting yourself on the back for nothing (Pillar to Giants) and bring something to the table. Put down the drink.
coldbeer
No you proposed a trade then admitted it wouldn’t happen. Pretty ridiculous. Do you just type to read your own words?
spinach
You started a thread with the phrase “Fake trade time”…
its_happening
Hey Spinach (since Coldbeer delivers absolutely nothing of substance I’ll ignore him)…
1) I am not a GM or Assistant GM. Therefore, I can’t make a real trade. Hence “Fake”.
2) If you want to come here with a drive-by comment, all I ask is an elaboration.
Thuggababyy
Why does spinach need an elaboration? His comment pretty much said it all.
Btw Jays won’t release Morales, Vlad Jr’s dad told him to hang out with Kendrys and learn how to be a pro from him. Apparently he’s a great locker room guy too.
its_happening
Nothing like having the guy that ruined his career breaking his leg on a walkoff grand slam mentoring a player with weight problems. Yeah, nothing like holding onto a non-leader while blocking Tellez.
“Apparently”. Um, yeah…..hard pass.
turner9
Any trade involving Pillar to the Giants is a good idea.
We still have Pompay to take over CF and Alford looks ready
Any type of prospect will do. Or a creative way to add Smoak plus salary to get better prospects.
its_happening
More than likely, Turner, Pompey would be a 4th playing against LHP to bench McKinney. I can only see Alford coming up if the Jays get rid of Morales. That would allow Teoscar to DH and Alford plays LF. Alford playing everyday in AAA to improve the bat is a good thing at this point.
myaccount
I don’t think this trade makes much sense. Why move Belt to get back another first basemen, especially a more inconsistent one? If you want to move Belt, move him straight up for prospects instead of blocking Posey’s path to first base once again.
its_happening
Because Posey has 1 more year to hold down the catcher position until San Fran can figure out who takes over in 2020. Smoak is a free agent after the season. He can be traded at the deadline if the Giants are out of it. The big key is to cut payroll, which is why Belt would be traded – and open 1B eventually for Posey. Dealing Belt allows San Fran to extend Bumgarner and have money leftover for an OF.
2020 you might have Joey Bart midseason, Posey can catch once a week and mentor him.
Dingerz
Suarez And belt for Smoak and Pillar
cptstupendous
Hmm interesting. This is a fun exercise, since it’s a fake trade (hopefully others see the intention is to have fun, not take it too seriously).
Question: belt/smoak aspect, who is valued greater?
aussiegiants53
If we felt like we could somehow compete then sure go get Pillar, but he’s not going to make a huge difference to what will most likely happen this season, so why bother? Shin Soo Choo for Melancon? We’ve done a couple of deals with Texas, so sure why not
its_happening
Not a bad suggestion. Also agree on the Pillar part. Love watching him play but I don’t see him being the difference in helping San Fran reach the playoffs.
coldbeer
Even if Zaidi were to pursue a rebuild, Pillar would have a spot. Same if Toronto keeps him. A defense-first CFer at least can save a few runs for the young pitchers. Nothing worse than trying to develop high potential arms with shoddy fielding behind them. Takes the wind out of the sails FAST.
its_happening
By that logic, Jays may as well keep Pillar since they are rebuilding.
coldbeer
“Same if Toronto keeps him.” Please put your reading glasses on.

Sorry. I checked out after a few words. Don’t blame me, I wasn’t the only one.

Melancon’s biggest negative is he’s expensive, costing more than he’s worth, but he is still relatively productive. Last season he had a 121 ERA+ and a 3.39 FIP. The only reason to trade him is to move his contract. Taking on another big contract in exchange for Melancon, especially for a defensive liability, makes zero sense.
Central Valley
My gut tells the Giants will be a 100 loss team this year. I say this as a life long fan too.
They’ve been atrocious at scouting, drafting and developming talent. Also, who ever signed Melancon needs to be indicted with a crime.
In all seriousness, they look old and weak. I caught an A’s game and just about everyone of their players looked to be in fantastic shape. The Giants look to be the complete opposite.
Zaidi has his hands full with this roster.
antibelt
A’s who got swept by Oakland, and lost their first baseman? Their pitching is horrible, as is the Padres. Giants have 4 legit starters, and hopefully a 5th in shark (so we can trade him). We also have the best relief corps in the division (KC won a WS with a solid bullpen). We win between 75-80 games, and hopefully have a chance to have some of our prospects called up and the end of the year (Bart, Anderson, Suarez, etc).
88winespodiodie
Does another major league baseball team that most of us don’t know about play in Oakland?
22jclark
Can’t imagine they lose 100 games. Healthy Bum, Posey and Shark. Panik in great shape and hitting well. Crawford knee is healed. Top 5-10 bullpen and top 10-15 rotation. Got more depth. Great defensive infield. Great coverage in CF. Strong arm in right, 20+ HR potential in left. They will be competitive as long as they stay healthy.
Frisco500
The shark is Terrible
Caladan607
The shark might surprise us this year with a fairly decent season going about 500 in W-L and a 3.50 ERA. I suspect he’ll be back to being an innings eater with every other game keeping them close. He consistently throws strikes low in the zone. Good hitters can hit him hard, many cannot. It is when he gets his pitches up in the zone that hitters hammer him and hot hitting teams eat him for lunch almost every time. This is the best you can expect from him.

“Harper said the couple ultimately decided that Philadelphia was the best fit. “It was nothing against San Francisco. They’re a great organization. It’s a great city,” Harper said. “It just came down to what I felt. And by that point, it was Philly.” ”
Yes, it is called money!
Visco104
Please take Jacoby Ellsbury. I’ll give you 2 top prospects to take him. He hits with a rolled up wet newspaper but he might catch a few when he decides to show up to the stadium. Also really good at drawing catchers interference. If that counts for anything.
Cashford64
Lol no.
mrnatewalter
It wasn’t too long ago that the Dodgers acquired Alex Wood and Jose Peraza simply by taking on a bunch of bad contracts (Morse, Latos, Arroyo). After all the moved money, it turned out to be around $20M they took on. Zaidi was the GM at the time.
I don’t see why the Giants don’t try and take on Ellsbury or Choo (or both) and get some legitimate talent in return. Use that financial clout to build up a pretty thin farm system.
sacball
yeah, let the Giants take on a bad contract, for a player the didn’t play at all last year, and has yet to play in Spring Training….they would need to receive a BA top 15 prospect to make that remotely acceptable
mrnatewalter
The point isn’t to play the guys. It’s to take on dead money and use that leverage to get prospects.
I didn’t think this was that difficult of a concept, but here we are.
ShieldF123
Love the idea for the Giants, but that requires that the other team is looking for salary relief and willing to trade prospects for it.
I doubt the Yankees or Rangers are willing to make any move in that direction. There is no reason for a rebuilding Rangers to seek relief and lose prospects and the Yankees don’t need to worry about Ellsbury as long as they can collect insurance $ and let him sit on the DL
snotrocket
I figured that would be the plan when Farhan came on board. Apparently delusions of being competitive with this washed up roster are still prevalent with the ownership group.
fred-3
It was easier to do those kinda trades during the last CBA (pre-2016).
jdgoat
The Jays immediately improve with an outfield that features Grichuk in center. They need relievers and the Giants have quite a few of those, so a trade does seem pretty realistic. Keep the youth movement going!
Anders21
Pillar for Bergen would be a fair trade.
jdgoat
I can’t see the Giants doing that but would be kind of funny.
mrnatewalter
If a Rule 5 pick gets traded back to the team he was selected from, does that team have to honor the Rule 5 rules?
Cashford64
Yes they do.
ShieldF123
MrNate yea or they have to offer the player back to his original team for cash and… Wait a minute…
its_happening
If Grichuk gets off to a good start, Jays need to consider dealing him at the deadline. It’s all about 2021 and beyond. A breakout from Randal would intrigue many teams.
snotrocket
Just grab another dude off the scrap heap who can fake it in center. Seems to be the MO for all the acquisitions this team has made this off-season anyway. If the plan is to do this until the bad contracts expire, I’m totally fine with it, but just come out and say as much.
bluemarc
Harper would have gone to the Dodgers if they offered a good contract over frisco or phillies
talking baseball
No bad contracts, no Pillar, no one else’s retreads,
GIANTS LET THE KIDS PLAY !!
GIVE THE KIDS A CHANCE ⚾️
I like Parra, but Slater would be my starting right fielder. Give the kids 400 at bats and if then they don’t produce look elsewhere. The Giants never give young outfielders a fair chance of consistent play time.
gilgunderson
As much as I also want to see Slater get more of a chance, he had a very, very poor ST and was rightly sent to the minors.
Caladan607
The problem with letting the kids play is when you consistently get blown out by football scores and end up playing before empty stadiums. It’s a clear path to bankruptcy unless you’ve got deep pockets. The Astros had owners with deep pockets and played before half full stadiums of loyal fans, so they stuck it out through several rough seasons and reaped the benefits of home grown talent. Other organizations are taking that path but never putting together the right combination (see the A’s). Yet others shoot themselves in the foot trying to get lucky with a one year wonder of youth and then dump talent as their talent becomes obvious (see Miami).
Now Tampa Bay is doing pretty good on a shoestring budget but not quite good enough to overcome the big boys in their division. Alas, the almighty dollar wins most of the time. What annoys me is the Giants are a very wealthy team.
Johhos
Aaron Altherr from Philly may soon be available …Out of options…would probably cost a 15-20 prospect at most (Corry or Rivera maybe)
ShieldF123
That’s a huge overpay for Altherr. He’s a negative WAR player
MarcTravel63
I enjoyed reading all these comments because I thought it was only us Phillies fans who argued like this LOL.
