The Giants have announced their final roster moves, with a trio dropped from the 40-man. Out of options players Mac Williamson, Alen Hanson, and Tom Murphy have all been designated for assignment after failing to crack the active roster, as Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area tweets.
It had been clear already that Hanson and Murphy were on their way off the 40-man, but Williamson’s fate was not resolved. But the writing was largely on the wall. The San Francisco organization made clear it would carry newly acquired outfielders Michael Reed and Connor Joe along with third baseman Pablo Sandoval.
Williamson has flashed ability at times, including a stirring power outburst last year at Triple-A. But the 28-year-old’s 2018 season was stunted by a concussion and he has yet to make good on his talent at the game’s highest level. Through 339 total plate appearances in the majors, Williamson carries a .222/.295/.386 slash with 13 home runs.
pustule bosey
bummer i doubt mac is making it through
Gumby82
NO! I still have high hopes for Williamson just because he worked with the same hitting coach who turned Justin Turner into a very good hitter. Also, his power improved with the new swing and if he were able to stay healthy there’s no reason to think he wouldn’t have had a solid year.
baseballpun
He probably will….for the Dodgers.
Sadler
He had one 5-game stretch last year before his concussion where he looked like a normal MLB baseball player. He’s about to be 29 and has shown absolutely nothing his entire career and his terrible spring was the nail in the coffin with the Giants.
It’s really not that surprising.

I’m glad the Giants are no longer being managed by someone’s heart on thier sleeve, some tough business decisions needed to be made and Zaidi is good at taking the emotional baggage and sifting through it to make sound business decisions.
antibelt
Sound business man? He literally picked up 3 people from the waiver wire and plugged them into the lineup. Any idiot could do that.
22jclark
Unfortunately, that’s the current state of the roster. Someone’s got to play left and right, Joe and Reed are those guys today. Keeping Their spots is all up to them, produce or get DFA’d. Gotta try something new, maybe Reed and Joe stick
gmenfan
The probably more of an indictment on the idiot at the helm of the previous regime, wouldn’t you say ?
claude raymond
You should have applied
claude raymond
And I guess idiots don’t know the proper use of the word “literal” unless of course Zaidi in fact saw 3 players standing on a wire made of waiver and physically lifted them off the wire

Hopefully someone will give the Mac Williamson {former Wake Forest Demon Deacon} a chance once he gets healed from getting hit on the hand during the last spring training game.
Saw him at many Wake Forest games. Mac displayed plenty of raw talent and strength but unfortunately injuries have hurt his chances to stay on the field and show what he is capable of doing.
champion1701
Williamson is a career minor leaguer, he was given several opportunities over the last couple years to fail. I’m glad he’s gone just like that bum Jarret Parker. I’m glad the Giants are no longer the revolving door of chances for Williamson, Parker, Law, Osich, Orkert, Gerrin… Just not having those bums on the 40 man has improved the roster 10 fold.
antibelt
I agree that some of these players didn’t work out, but to call them bumps seems harsh. Farhan on the other hand, is a bum.
ABStract
What?
Mystified by your logic here
What has Zaidi done to earn your hypocritical ire?
SFGiants4ever
Someone else’s garbage is still garbage, Zaidi has been dumpster diving all off season, then after he realizes oh that guys garbage stinks too he releases them or trades them for other garbage.
He hasn’t done anything and I mean anything to improve last years team. I would rather my own garbage then someone else’s garbage.
None of the guys they just picked up are any better than Williamson, look at what they have accomplished in the Majors.
Cashford64
Dereck Rodriguez was some other team’s garbage. Max Muncy was some other team’s garbage. Justin Turner and J.D. Martinez were once some other team’s garbage. If you’re looking for that diamond in the rough, you have to do a lot of digging.
sacball
Bobby Evans, is that you?
22jclark
Mac was given multiple opportunities to claim LF and he couldn’t do it. He’s not exactly young anymore. If he hits 25 HR’s somewhere this year, good for him but the Giants can’t keep waiting. If Joe and Reed don’t get something going in April, they’ll be gone as well. Either get it done or get moved out. The concussion was 1 year ago and he hasn’t done squat since, turn the page
imgman09
Yeah I don’t think any of these guys are going to clear, hope I’m wrong!
James1955
Zaiti is a moneyball guy. I don’t know why some Giants fans are surprised at moneyball moves.
jbigz12
Are these moneyball moves? He just claimed a guy then tried to sneak him thru waivers and dropped two others. These are pretty typical baseball moves for any organization. Williamson nor Hanson have done anything professionally.
SFGiants4ever
They’ve done more than the guys he has picked up this off season.
SFGiants74
Who is Zaiti? Do you have a problem with speaking American English? Why do you screw up the name when it given to you in plain text. It is not that hard.

On the heels of last year’s admission of failure with regard to the drafting and development of Jarrett Parker, we now add to that , Mac Williamson (most probably still suffering the aftereffects of his concussion – different people take varying amounts of time to FULLY recover), and Gary Brown before them. Is it REALLY that difficult for the Giant’s organization to draft and develop outfielders? Is it just easier to take on the castoffs from other teams?
jbigz12
Williamson was a 3rd round pick out of
College signed for 350K. He was never this monster prospect really. He might’ve been in SF’s system but he was never regarded that well around the game. He was the Giants #13 prospect before he debuted. This was more of a predictable outcome than anything else.
nentwigs
So no big deal?
Just a wasted 3rd round pick that yielded NOTHING?
Just $350K flushed down the toilet!!
Just 6 years (2012 -2018) of consuming training and coaching resources in the Giant’s organization that could have been directed to another player.
jbigz12
This is professional baseball. You’re going to be angry at a lot of teams and a lot of people if that outrages you. That’s a drop in the bucket. You should be more upset about all the under water deals they have or the fact that they were still acquiring them as early as last year. Not that Williamson flamed out. The guy has less than 400 big league ABS. It’s not like they stuck him in the lineup everyday for 10 years.
SFGiants74
You are giving a scouting report after the fact. You might have some credibility if can evaluate players before the draft. Who should the Giants draft, or sign, in the upcoming season? You are the expert.
jbigz12
Not sure who you’re addressing here. All I said was for this guy to not get up in arms over Williamson. A guy who was never considered to be anywhere close to a special prospect.

Watch for a Mac-comeback. Reminds me of Adam Duvall – who left Giants and hit for power with Reds for a couple seasons – although now may be out of a job. A healthy Williamson can surely hit for power maybe 20+ home runs and a .230 average if given the at-bats. I would take Mac over the waiver wire guys they replaced him with, although even I would have only given him till the All-Star break to prove himself. If the Giants were ready to contend, sure he should go, but why not give him a chance if they are just rearranging the deck chairs for a year or two?
SFGiants74
Williamson needs to get healthy. Adam Duvall is a waiver waiver type of player He is not worth a spot on the 40 man roster.

Opening day was ominous for the Giants. If some of them don’t step up, they’re looking at 100+ in the loss column, maybe even a 2018 Orioles-like record. On the bright side, Longoria squared it up and Bum looked vintage. Bum is going to fetch an excellent haul when he is traded in late July. The Bum farewell tour has begun…
