Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer was one of the majors’ hardest-throwing starters from 2016-18, but his velocity has been anything but imposing early in 2019. As has been the case throughout the spring, Fulmer’s fastball sat in the 88 to 92 mph range during a 44-pitch outing Saturday, leading Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press to note that the soon-to-be 26-year-old “didn’t look right.” The Tigers aren’t confident Fulmer’s velocity will return, writes Fenech, which is an eyebrow-raising observation given that he’s one of the rebuilding team’s most valuable players and trade chips. But it’s worth noting Fulmer’s still in the early stages of his comeback from right knee surgery, and he and pitching coach Rick Anderson expressed confidence Saturday that his velocity will return, Chris McCosky of the Detroit News relays. If so, the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year figures to stand a far better chance of rebounding from a disappointing, injury-shortened 2017 – a 132 1/3-inning campaign in which he logged career-worst numbers (4.69 ERA/4.52 FIP with 7.48 K/9 and 3.13 BB/9).
More on a couple other hurlers from the majors’ Central divisions…
- While Fulmer’s velocity has gone in the wrong direction this spring, the uptick Twins southpaw Martin Perez has experienced has impressed scouts, Dan Hayes of The Athletic notes (subscription required). As a member of the Rangers from 2012-18, with whom he had an unspectacular tenure, Perez’s average fastball clocked in at 93.5 mph. This spring, though, it has consistently reached the mid- to upper 90s – including across four shutout innings against the Pirates on Saturday. The increase may be attributable to a mechanical change the Twins made with Perez, whom they signed to a one-year, $4MM guarantee over the winter. The Twins have pushed Perez to incorporate his hips more into his delivery, Hayes details, and he has taken their advice. “All in from Day One,” assistant pitching coach Jeremy Hefner told Hayes. “He’s a joy to be around. One of the hardest workers we have.” If Perez’s velo gains stick, he could end up as a steal for the Twins, and may finally begin delivering on the hype he had during his days as a prospect.
- Reds left-hander Alex Wood, who has been dealing with back issues over the past couple weeks, suffered a setback after throwing a simulated game Friday, according to manager David Bell (via Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer). Wood hasn’t pitched in a Cactus League game since Feb. 25, and it could be at least another week before he makes an appearance, Nightengale suggests. Although Bell said Wood’s injury isn’t “a major concern,” the skipper’s nonetheless unsure whether the winter acquisition will be ready for the start of the season. Having picked Wood up in a blockbuster trade with the Dodgers, the Reds are counting on the 28-year-old to serve as one of the anchors in what they hope will be a vastly improved rotation.

What does Avila ultimately get for Michael Fulmer?
Not Xabial
Go away.
mfm420
why? is he one of the many on here supporting a child molester?
or whining that tebow should be on an mlb and/or nfl roster?
Houston We Have A Solution
Gets to punch chungus in the face. Along with a prospect or two dependent on fulmers health.
xabial
Hindsight says, he misjudged his market, but MF still has trade value cuz team control.
jbigz12
If the tigers are legitimately concerned he’ll never get his Velo back as this article states they probably won’t get anymore than they would now by hanging onto him. Personally I’d hang onto him and hope it returns. But that’s really troubling if the tigers really think that. They aren’t going to get anything at all if this time next year he’s throwing 90 mph and pitching like last season.
YakAttack
Welcome to being a Tigers’ fan.
xabial
Rooted for Miggy evry time reached playoffs / WS. Want him to retire with ring. (36 in April)
Excluding the 2012 ALCS, of course.
YakAttack
40 when Detroit is contending. Thanks to Chris Davis and Pujols. Not the worst contraxt in baseball. Zimmermann gets a shout out, as well.
therealryan
Miggy has a ring.
swinging wood
You say that like the 2003 WS never happened. Believe any Cub fan that is old enough to remember that year – Miggy definitely got a ring.
DarkSide830
nothing because he’s not going anywhere

Tigers’ doing a full-blown, scorched-earth rebuild…
Thomas Walker
Kinda feel like they missed the window to cash in big on Fulmer. While he would still bring a “decent” return, the shine was worn off a little. No getting around it, they are a mess in Detroit and that Cabrera contract is without question, the worst in sports. Gonna be a long road.
dugdog83
Yes they did. They had a great shot to get a huge return. Club control and knowing this rebuild was coming and they flat out blew it.
And at the time of Cabrera’s contract, triple crown, MVP, best hitter on the planet, co-face of the franchise, Tiger for life sign him big now or someone else will, I get it. It really sucks now but at the time it wasn’t bad.
Tigernut2000
Yes it was. Way too lng. I dont think Mike I cared. Doubt he planned on dieing before he won the big one.
stymeedone
Earth scorching part is done. They are now building. I noticed there was no name attributed to who thinks his velocity will not return. The pitching coach is named, saying no worries. I will take the attributed source.
Hey X, maybe its the Yanks that missed out on trading Severino for top value before he got injured!
bravesfan88
Yeah, before his injury, it was almost two years in a row that the Braves loved them some Michael Fullmer. They were trying to pry him away, but the Tigers apparently refused to trade him. I remember a report that said the Braves even offered Albies, Soroka, plus some, and the Tigers still said not a chance..
Looks like they gambled and lost, but Fullmer still has plenty of time to regain his velo and rebuild his stock.
TheYourMomGuy
Avila gets your mom.
bencole
Not much I’ll bet. 2 B prospects? It’s been awhile since he’s been good, and I think he was always overrated.
xabial
Part of me also asked cuz I knew Yanks always valued Fulmer, but that was before the injury and their recent farm-depleting trades. It seems to be a polarizing topic, whether Avila maximize the return for Fulmer in his plan.
Just trying to talk baseball. (Wish modded more)
YakAttack
X…What would your offer be right now for Fulmer? Curious. I actually like your insight and contributions.
davidkaner
He could be the second coming of Mark Fidyrch. He had one great rookie year but nothing but injuries since then. His value has diminished so low no one would give much for him now. He has to come back and stay healthy the entire year and throw above 94.

Fulmer mechanics looks like over throw when MPH has above 94. Looks fluid at around 92.
Hurt and injury but good stat result when above 94.
Avila gets not much for 92 MPH Fulmer with 4.5 era.
Fulmer learn good sinker this late in life? Become ground ball inducer? Not high odds!
Tigers keep and learn to live with 92 MPH Fulmer who eats 140-160 inning a year during rebuild.
bravesfan88
The Braves were all over Fulmer last year, basically drooling over wanting him, but the Tigers wouldn’t budge..It was rumored that allegedly the Braves offered Albies, Allard, and Mike Soroka. If that offer was true, the Tigers would be really hard pressed to find a deal worth anywhere near that now.
Now, Fulmer’s stock is at an all-time low for him, so for the Tigers sake, hopefully he’s able to stay healthy, regain that velocity, and return to his 2016-2017 form…
Robert Pierce
Fulmer’s value now is to man the rubber for a cheap rate until the young group can take over.
They won’t get anything major for him unless he can demonstrate the power and command he had on year 1. Which after the injuries I don’t know if he will.
canocorn
A healthy Alex Wood is key to Reds season.
thatsdoctorsmartasstoyou
I think key is Sonny Gray and the young guys. Really hoping Wood and Roark are 4&5 this year
mjw32
Alex Wood is a mid-rotation starter at best. If Reds are pegging him as their go to ace or #2, they’ve mistaken his talent ceiling. Even the big red machine boasted one true rotation ace. Don’t see one on current club.
Cincyshawn
Alex Wood 2 years ago was one of best pitchers in league buy okay
jbigz12
Wood in his best seasons in LA was largely a 5 or 6 inning pitcher. That’s not one of the best in baseball no matter how solid the ERA is. Wood is significantly closer to a 3 than a #1 and that’s not even debatable. There’s a reason the dodgers found him expendable and you didn’t give up an arm and a leg to get him.
ksoze
Yes, good thing no one ever trades players who are any good….
jbigz12
I never said that was the case. We’ve seen enough of Alex wood to know he’s not an ace. I’m not even going to entertain that argument. You got a solid middle of the rotation arm.
ksoze
Always a hater in the comments
ksoze
Wood, Gray, and Roark are all potential 3’s. There are very, very few aces in the game. Most teams #1’s are not aces.
Col. Taylor
Ok but I still don’t see any hate… Me? I hate hyperbole… Hope the Reds have a good season.
bravesfan
I still want Fulmer on the braves. I think he’s legit.
Armchair GM time: Allard, Ynoa, and player to be named later. Or maybe one more top 30 guy. Good pieces for a rebuilding team… without being jerks, love some counters
Rebuild it
As a Braves fan ill pass. He doesnt improve their rotation much and one of the prospects could turn into something, especially Ynoa
bravesfan
Ynoa isn’t gonna turn into something unless you think he can be legitbin the bullpen. Allard would be tough to lose but I don’t think this is giving up a lot for a pitcher who has shown he can be elite. I do agree we don’t need him, I just want him I guess.
todd76
No thanks. Pass on Fulmer. Stay the course keep the prospects.
jbigz12
Yep. Braves have far too many pitchers who aren’t that far off from Fulmer. No need to add a guy like that. I’d just as soon bet on the upsides of guys like Gohara,Wright, Soroka, and Touissant.
YakAttack
Tigers fan. I’ll take it. Right now.
bravesfan
Well good lol surprised
66TheNumberOfTheBest
The last few years of Fulmer’s career show why a rebuilding team should always trade pitchers when their value is high. It can vanish quickly.
stymeedone
Yes, the Tigers should have traded Verlander and Porcello before they started contending. Oh wait. They wouldn’t have without them. They were part of the building.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I wrote “The last few years of Fulmer’s career show why a rebuilding team should always trade pitchers when their value is high. It can vanish quickly.”
You appear to have read it as “Teams should trade emerging star pitchers right before they start contending.”
YakAttack
Alex Wilson and Gabe Spier helped the rebuild? Detroit got fleeced in the Porcello deal.
dggoblue
Not sure about the fleeced comment. Tigers also got Cespedes in that deal. He played good for the Tigers then they flipped him for Fulmer. Porcello was just a 4-5 in Detroit’s rotation.
