The Angels have acquired infielder Adrian Rondon from the Rays, per club announcements. Cash considerations are headed in the other direction.
When he was inked back in 2014 out of his native Dominican Republic to a ~$3MM bonus, Rondon was considered a top talent. Now twenty years of age, he has yet to move past the Class A level and carries only a .206/.271/.321 batting line through parts of four professionals seasons.
Rondon’s outlook on the field is at best uncertain, but the Halos will see if they can unlock some of his former promise. He’ll join another fading young prospect with a top-notch pedigree, Kevin Maitan, in the Los Angeles farm system.

Eppler hearts these high-upside, volatile outcome prospects. He’s probably right in that if a few become stars it’s substantially more valuable than 3 or 4 replacement level ML’ers.

Was this cat a well regarded prospect once? I have never heard of him

Seriously? Did you not read the article above? Its like 2 paragraphs.

His moniker openly admits he is mindless – what did you honestly expect?

I just loved the beatnik style of question. One crazy cat, no doubt, daddio.

Hmmm…Wander Franco hes not I guess.

Sorry to inform you but maitan isnt fading at 18 he is just fine, had he been a yankees prospect he would be top 10 in all lists. Media bias is annoying
darkstar61
You obviously didn’t hear him getting booed on the regular in Orem last season.
Most hated hometown player I’ve ever seen, and that was in one of the countries kindest cities
Well below average bat and 32 errors in just 61 games (in a league which is generous in not calling them, no less) will do that though, I guess
its_happening
32 errors in 61 games? Wow….
darkstar61
Yeah, and there were more that weren’t even called.
I wasn’t alone in thinking he was one of the worst baseball players I’ve ever seen in the Pros. Just atrocious at every aspect of the game.
In fact, this speaks volumes:
31 Errors
66 Stikeouts
65 hits
26 RBI
So there is a reason he went from ranked #32 in Baseball (pre-17) to #87 in Baseball (pre-18) to #15 in merely the Angels system (pre-19) – and it’s not any kind of bias at play; he really sucks

Orioles’ fans take note; it’s not just about spending money. For years, the Rays spent their share in the DR with nothing to show for it; Rondon being the poster boy.
Since they hired Carlos Rodriguez about 3 years ago as their International guy, they’ve found 5 of their top 15 prospects, in a deep system. It isn’t Franco; EVERYBODY knew about Franco. It’s Sanchez and Brujan and Hernandez and Gomez, under the radar guys.
It takes relationship building, trust, and a whole lot of leg work. And that takes time to bear fruit.

Rondon, Sanchez, Brujan and Hernandez were all signed during the same J2 period in 2014. Rondon cannot be the poster boy for failure of their international FA program, while at the same time, holding up 3 other guys signed at the same time by the same people as expamples of their success in international signings.
I know you like to bash the Rays whenever you get a chance, but try and use some facts next time.

Three million is alot to be wrong on. He’s still young so he’s either tras or about to go unprotected in the rule five draft, otherwise just see if he figures anything out.
