Blue Jays right-hander Ryan Tepera and Nationals righty Kyle Barraclough have lost their arbitration cases against their respective teams, Jeff Passan of ESPN reports (via Twitter). Tepera will be paid at the $1.525MM rate filed by the Blue Jays rather than the $1.8MM figure submitted by his camp. Barraclough, meanwhile, will earn $1.725MM rather than the $2MM at which he filed.
Tepera, 31, isn’t exactly a household name but has emerged as a quality setup piece for the Jays over the past four seasons. In 193 2/3 innings to this point in his career, he’s compiled a 3.49 ERA with 8.8 K/9, 3.2 BB/9 and a 44.8 percent ground-ball rate. The righty stepped into a ninth-inning role for a bit in Toronto last year and tallied seven saves to go along with 19 holds. The loss in today’s case will set a lower launching point for Tepera in future cases, thus limiting his earning in each of his next two trips through arbitration before he reaches free agency after the 2021 campaign.
Barraclough, 28, hasn’t even suited up for the Nats yet, as he was acquired from the Marlins in a rare October trade. He’s posted gaudy strikeout numbers through the first four seasons of his career but also battled control issues, having ultimately logged a 3.21 ERA with 11.5 K/9 against 5.5 BB/9. Last season was Barraclough’s worst, as he turned in a career-high 4.20 ERA with a career-low 9.7 K/9. He did, to his credit, tally 10 saves in a partial run as Miami’s closer. As is the case with Tepera, he’s controlled through the 2021 season.
As can be seen in MLBTR’s 2019 Arbitration Tracker, today’s rulings have evened the score between teams and players at three victories apiece.

Lol and jays fans were saying they were being cheap. Last people you should ever listen to is the fans.
Codeeg
Just because they won doesn’t mean they’re not cheap.
iverbure
According to all the boys who cry wolf on here every single team is cheap so it’s best to ignore every single person who says the word cheap on here.

Yes it does. The Blue jays were able to settle with every arbitration-eligible player this year – Pillar, Stroman, Biaginii, Sanchez, Giles, Travis, Drury, Grichuk – except one, Tepera, who took them to arbitration and lost. To say they are ‘cheap’ in those circumstances is far-fetched.. This Front Office has never lost an arbitration case. The only players who have rejected the team’s offer are players demanding more than an arbitrator thought they were worth. All the team can do is either settle or offer what an arbitrator thinks the player is worth and they’ve done that every time.

LOL@Jays fighting over 275K
oldmanmiller
Could be $275k they can spend on another player in the future! Makes sense to me for both sides to fight for that kinda money
iverbure
People said this about Donaldson case too. Fighting over 400k. These people don’t understand that saving money in year 1 or 2 means millions later on. Best just to ignore the ignorant people.
mlb1225
If $200K-$400K is really going to affect your payroll that much in future years, then you have some other problems in the payroll.
dave13
That is not what he is saying nor do you have any clue how the system works.. teams and players fight for every dollar because that number is the base number for next season plus a raise and bonuses based on performance. That cycle happens and builds each year until player hits free agency. So yes 200-400K could end up costing a team a few or more million dollars in aggregate.
oldmanmiller
They do have payroll issues.. the just ate millions for tulo and Martin!
Le Grande Orangerie
Not the issue. If every team paid whatever the player asked, then the difference is going to be a lot more than 400k. What holds the line is that the team won’t go over a salary that an arbitrator will uphold.
Nats ain't what they used to be
You are wrong to refer to a 275 dollar amount. Since the player’s salary will be a given as base for arbitration in 2020 and 2021, they were really fighting over three times that number plus “interest”.
Nats ain't what they used to be
Not sure why triple post. I quest system posted one for each year. LOL
iverbure
I’ll add the simpletons also said AA never took any jays players to arb hearings, which was also false lol. In fact he created the file and trail system the jays currently use. Facts are really hard for these people to grip.

Guess the Jays need every penny saved to Payout Tulo while in pinstripes and Martin in Dodger blue.

If Tulo is healthy and the Jay’s had to pay him why did they let him go? What am I missing?
its_happening
Couldn’t trade him due to his inability to remain healthy and his contract.
As for why they let him go, a variety of reasons we do and don’t know.
Le Grande Orangerie
What are you missing? The obvious. T’hey let him go because a 34 year old ‘shortstop’ who hadn’t played at all in almost two seasons and who intended to be a clubhouse distraction had no place their plans. Rightly so. They obviously hoped to be able to move him like they did Martin. No one wanted to pay anything for him.
jorge78
OK, thanks TR & Eddie!
its_happening
Clubhouse distraction is only if the fanbase believes the lies told by the organization through the media, both owned by Rogers. I think Tulo would have been the opposite of a distraction and a competitor young guys needed to watch and observe. Jays punted an actual leader.

Bottom line, Jays need Tepera to perform in 2019 and deal him to a contender. Hope for the best here.

After shelling out a bundle to rid themselves of the inept base running Tulospasky, maybe they need to save a few bucks. Also, the underperforming Shapiro gets his annual big bucks bonus.
