The Diamondbacks’ interesting offseason reflects GM Mike Hazen’s self-described effort to “thread the needle,” Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic writes in an excellent look at the Arizona organization and its top baseball executive. Despite trading away franchise cornerstone Paul Goldschmidt in what could turn out to be a highly consequential trade, the Snakes will enter the season with intentions of trying to contend — albeit with a realistic outlook and, it seems fair to presume, backup plans should things go south. Hazen says he’s committed to trying to put a winner on the field whenever possible, making clear he has no regret for pushing in chips at last summer’s trade deadline. It’s an interesting article that’s well worth a full read.
More from the National League:
- Mets righty Zack Wheeler has been noted as a potential extension target this spring, but it does not sound as if he’s anxious to discuss a new deal after previously agreeing to a $5.975MM contract for his final season of arbitration eligibility. As Tim Healey of Newsday writes, Wheeler declined to say that he’s interested in — or even thinking at all about — a long-term arrangement. “I’m here right now,” Wheeler says. “That’s all I’m worried about. All that stuff will figure itself out and I’ll worry about that later.” Those comments certainly don’t seem to rule out an extension, and Wheeler made clear he’s happy to be playing for the Mets, but they also leave little reason to think that he is anxious to secure a new deal. If the team was hoping it might find value by striking up negotiations this spring, then, it may be disappointed.
- Meanwhile, right-handed Cardinals starter Michael Wacha struck a similar tone, as Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, though he’s in a bit of a different situation than Wheeler. Though Wacha also turned in strong results last year, he ended the season on the shelf with an oblique injury. His own injury struggles are well-documented, albeit not as extensive as Wheeler’s, yet the situation is not one that’s obviously ripe for extension talks even as free agency beckons. Wacha made clear he has not been approached by the club to this point, saying he’s “not getting prepared for any talks” in camp.
- The Rockies are hopeful that southpaw Mike Dunn will be ready to head north with the club out of camp and have a full 2019 season, MLB.com’s Thomas Harding writes. That would be a boon to a relief unit that has not received the contributions it hoped for from multiple high-priced relief pitchers. The 33-year-old Dunn did not pitch to expectations in 2017 and had a dreadful 2018 showing before giong down to shoulder surgery. That creates quite a lot of uncertainty, though bullpen coach Darren Holmes says that the southpaw’s “arm is working as well as it did in 2016 or better” as camp approaches.

Wheeler would be the best starter in the Yankees, yet he is the 3rd best on the Mets.
BartoloHRball
Arguably true. Severino has shown flashes, but like Wheeler prior to 2018….he has been very inconsistent. The Mets *should* extend Wheeler and Syn now and deGrom if it is a fair deal (5/$125m-$130m….bc 2 arb years pull down AAV). I think Wheeler could go for a Nola-type deal because it is not only safer for him in regard to injury risk, but also with the looming CBA, it is unclear how that will impact FAs going into 2020. The “new normal” for FA contracts seems to be more cost-controlled, so that will likely worry a lot of guys because it decreases the payoff for betting on themselves to reach FA healthy and able to attain a long contract instead of 3yr or less higher AAV deal.

Let’s see if he can stay healthy shading. He got paid for two years for doing nothing, don’t forget.

I would want to get away from the Mets franchise…

remember when your storied franchise signed that superstar ellsbury? good times

You can’t compare when a money machine like the Yanks takes on bad contracts compared to the Mets fiscal restraints.
mikeyank55
Hey Mr formal Metsie fan-talk about Ellsbury is warranted, However coming from you it has to be taken with a grain of Cespedes salt, which could make it look like a good signing.

mikeyank55
Sure. Hey ‘86 is Bobby Bo going to take you for sushi? Your Metsies will be paying him through what, 2032?
BartoloHRball
c’mon….most/all MLB teams negotiate deferred payments that extend well into retirement. The Bobby Bo deal gets a lot of flack bc the rationale was based on the Madoff house of cards, but in reality it is a very common tactic. Look at WAS, they are really the biggest utilizer of deferred payments. Pujols has a post-retirement job/salary written into his contract…for like a decade.

Let me guess you would love to see him as a yankee?
iplay_in_traffic
Oddly enough, seems like quite a few of their players lobby to stay with the team. At least publicly. So maybe you are biased.

Why didn’t they cover the Phillies trading for Realimoto?

Never heard of him.

Did you have a few drinks tonight Jeff? That second sentence is a little… sloppy.

Just joking because we ran approximately 147 posts on Realmuto this winter, including three yesterday.

I just looked again before that post and saw nothing on it. They were probably too busy reposting some other story to notice. I can still see minor league signing stories but not Realimoto traded to the Phillies. Caught it on Google after sitting on here everyday and had to go to Mlb.com/Phillies to read a story. You guys speculating on the same five teams 147 times was a great idea. Should have just wrote 27 articles, one for each team who might make a trade for him. I appreciate you acting like it’s my fault.
Cat Mando
I, along with many others, had no problems reading the 3 stories Jeff linked. There are a combined 996 comments on those stories regarding the Phillies and “Realimoto” (more commonly known as Realmuto).
Considering no one else had trouble finding the stories the fault would seem to lie with you or whatever device you are using.
thecoffinnail
You really should double check with a different device before making an attack like that. To the 99% of us that saw and read the articles when they were negotiating, nearing a trade, and when the trade actually happened, you look extremely foolish. Insert foot now.
Polymath
Cat Mando, don’t conflate the two. There were no articles on Realimoto; there were many on Realmuto. He speaketh the Truth.

Wheeler and Wacha both need to prove they can stay healthy before a competent GM/POBO will sign either for a significant contract. It shouldn’t be surprising that neither have been approached.
hollidayfever
Check Wacha’s IP totals the previous 2-3 years compared with league average. Last year was a back thing that should be healed and not the shoulder. If he throws 150-175 IP at his usual 3+WAR clip he’ll get 2-3 years in the 12-15 AAV range.
batty
So you don’t care about his health problems?
hollidayfever
How did you possibly surmise that out of what I posted? He had IP totals of 181,138, and 165 from 2015-2017. He’s had solid numbers as well. Brandon McCarthy had the same rare scapular condition and still got paid after 30 years of age. I think the Cards will gladly offer the QO if he’s healthy and productive this year and he’ll get signed for 2-3 years around 15 million AAV like I said and you apparently completely failed to comprehend in my previous post.
mets8669
Mets should make deals with both deGrom and Wheeler before this season starts . They need to keep what the organization developed .
met man
deGrom yes but I’d wait on Wheeler
BartoloHRball
Heck no….he is the guy you roll the dice with an extension because if he is remotely as effective as his second half…his contract gets a lot more expensive. The Nola deal with a $2m more AAV should be very attractive to a pitcher with a spotty health history. There are rumors that Wheeler wants to get a deal done, but the Mets have slow-played it….for god knows why…horrible front office? Signing Wheeler takes a little leverage away from the deGrom negotiation and may even nudge Syn to at least consider an extension. Once the season starts, those three guys likely will want contracts that get more expensive (barring injury).
Flapjax55
Nothing against Hazen but there is no decision to make about rebuilding vs contending. There will be no contending this year after losing Goldy, Corbin and Pollack.
They have a roster of full of currently sell-low guys. There’s not much they can do but see how these guys pan out so they don’t get pennies in the dollar in return.
Hazen mentions the A’s and Rays in the linked article and how they compete. In a word: pitching.

Dbacks had the 4th best ERA last year…ahead of Tampa 6th and Oakland 10th.
prestigeworldwide
Dbacks had the 4th best ERA last year…ahead of Tampa 6th and Oakland 11th.
Lets Go DBacks
You obviously did not read the entire article. Many players had down years last season, several are mentioned in the article. If they bounce back and the Dbacks still not contend, the returns they can have for them will be much better than what you get now. Who would give up some reasonable prospects for Godley, Ray (was pretty average last year) or Souza Jr. at the moment? That is part of the reasoning behind the retooling. It is hard to think we might compete for a WC, but there is reason to think we might with so many that should be able to bounce back and I’d rather have us trying to and fail than just throw in the towel and try to stay below 100 losses. A complete tear down is no guarantee for success either and with the recent farm acquisitions and this year’s number of draft picks the future is bright and ours, even when retooling. In Mike Hazen we trust, let’s go Dbacks!!!!!
its_happening
Taking an honest look at the D-Backs, I’m wondering why they aren’t in on Machado. They can makeshift the infield to accommodate. Harper, a Vegas guy, wouldn’t fit with the OF.
Machado and Kuechel would put them in good position in the NL West. Walker comes back from TJ and moves to the bullpen or starting rotation if a starter goes down to injury.
Cardinals17
Unfortunately, because of Wacha’s injury history he is untradeable. The Cardinals will probably not extend him. Very unfortunate for him, because when he is healthy, he is extremely dominant.
dematteo1982
If Wheeler has a full season like his 2nd half last year…his Free Agency gets real interesting. He initially burst on the scene…got hurt…was average for a little bit…got hurt again…now has been really good for the better part of the last 2 seasons. Given his age…and assuming at 29 he could realistically have 5 seasons of mostly peak ability….id say on the open market nwxt offseason…he could be in line for a 4yr/$76-$88mil contract. The Mets have Wheeler after 2019…deGrom after 2020 Thor after 2022 i believe…Thats the Mets window in my opinion….Sign Wheeler at the 4 yrs, taking him to 2022…deGrom should get 4yr/$120mil..taking him through 2024. So BVW should extend Wheeler until Thor hits FA…That would be the Mets window to win….As long as deGrom,Syndergaard and Wheeler are in the 1,2 and 3 spots….the Mets always have a shot to contend
jekporkins
Wheeler is a dangerous long-term contract., and a bust waiting to happen. He’s unreliable. He’s never pitched 200 innings. He’s barely over .500 in his career. You’re paying for the hopes he’ll finally figure it all out, but once you turn 30 as a pitcher it just gets harder. I hope any team I root for doesn’t bite on the guy.
BartoloHRball
To be fair…200in / season is becoming less and less common. Here are how many pitchers hit 200 or more innings in a (regular) season in the past 5 years:
2018: 13
2017: 15
2016: 15
2015: 28
2014: 34
This is one reason a guy like Scherzer is so valuable…he is an absolute workhorse AND he is an elite pitcher. deGrom is working towards it and I think is a great bet to be the exception because he has so many less innings on his arm than the vast majority of MLB pitchers at his age. I expect there to be 13 or less guys who hit it this year because of how BPs continue to expand and teams like the Dodgers who manipulate the backend of the BP to rotate AAA guys in weekly.
619bird
Wacha is not untradeable if he stays healthy this season. Cardinals would have to be in a bad position to trade him.
I would be worried about him taking a QO if he’s deemed worthy enough by the baseball gods.
bucketbrew35
I honestly don’t blame Wheeler in the slightest. He’s come back from a ton of serious injuries and there was talk a few times that his career was over. This will probably be his only big pay day. I fully expect him to test the market. He’s certainly earned it.

Jeff “Hanging Clause” Todd seems to really like meaningless filler words like “then”. MLBTR needs to hire better editors. It’s a shame, Hoops Rumors has writers with far superior control of English than these guys, whose fancy diction and attempt at academic style hides their complete inability to write to-the-point articles.
xabial
How dare you. Completely disagree.
Jeff Todd is the pride of MLBTR. Why don’t u get lost?
BartoloHRball
Meh…you need to troll better. Admittedly some of the writing seems to be sloppier across many contributors as compared to a couple years ago, but it seems to be a sign of the times to get things up as quickly as possible.
Questionable_Source
If the Rockies are trying to win, why would Dunn’s presence be viewed as a positive?
bourbon
The NL Central is loaded with lefty bats, which Wacha limits very well.
Stl would do well to keep Wacha on a conservative 2 or 3 yr deal with IP incentives that allow him to max his value.
Gomber as the SP6 or 7 is the closest to a LH SP stl currently has.
