A return to Milwaukee for Mike Moustakas “seems inevitable,” writes The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, who also suspects the Crew aren’t willing to extend a multi-year offer to the 30-year-old third baseman. Moustakas, who yet again has garnered little interest in his repeat foray into the free-agent market, would figure to reprise his role as the team’s primary third baseman, shifting Travis Shaw across the diamond to second. Moose’s 105 wRC+ output was slightly down from the previous three seasons, though his hard-hit rate jumped to a career-best 41.2%. His ZiPS projection, released yesterday on FanGraphs, shines brightly, perhaps as a result: the system forecasts a 116 OPS+/3.2 WAR output for the longtime Royal, seeing him as an easily above-average big-league third baseman. MLB teams, it seems, are hardly in accord.
Here’s more from around the NL . . .
- Milwaukee, who’s yet to tire of yo-yoing Shaw back and forth from second to third, also hasn’t begun extension talks with the now-versatile 28-year-old, reports Rosenthal. Fresh off his third 118 or better wRC+ season in four years, the former ninth-round selection of the Red Sox has found a home in Wisconsin, turning in consecutive 3.5+ fWAR campaigns in his first two seasons with the team. Peripherals paint an even better picture: Shaw upped his walk rate by nearly four percent, to 13.3, and dropped his strikeout rate to a career-low 18.4%, his first MLB season under 20 in the category. Though the minor-league track record was mostly stellar, save for two stints in AAA, the son of longtime MLB closer Jeff Shaw was never a highly-touted prospect, even in the hyped-up Boston system, and it’s certainly possible that the Brewers would like to see more before offering him a hefty chunk of change. Still, another season like the last two, and it may not be Milwaukee on the next deal’s bottom line.
- The quartet of prospects sent from Milwaukee to Miami in the Christian Yelich deal, headlined by the trio of Lewis Brinson, Monte Harrison, and Isan Diaz, top 100 guys all, have yet to look the part. Still, Miami doesn’t view the return as a “lost cause,” writes Rosenthal, who notes that the Fish are still particularly high on minor-league strikeout king Harrison. Diaz, too, has flashed an intriguing power/plate-discipline combo in the upper minors, and appears poised to get his second-base shot in the upcoming campaign. Brinson, to be sure, suffered through a rookie campaign that almost could not have gone worse, but figures to get all the ship-righting opportunities he needs in the seasons to come.
- Third baseman-turned-right fielder Brian Anderson will move back to the hot corner for 2019, tweets the Miami Herald’s Clark Spencer. Anderson handled the shift with aplomb last season, posting 4 DRS and a +5 UZR on the way to an impressive 3.4 fWAR rookie campaign. Still, a young, well-rounded third baseman is a tougher find, and the Fish will surely like to test their young outfielders in the months to come. One-time incumbent Martin Prado may be on his last leg, and it seems the Marlins will again to look to the 35-year-old to fill his early-career super-utility role in 2019.
kboroczk
I’m surprised that the Marlins didn’t require their JTR trade partner to take Prado as part of the deal.
DarkSide830
id be fine taking Prado’s salary if it meant trading a SP prospect besides one of our top 3.
GONEcarlo
Old Marlins would have, but new ownership is at least smart enough to realize that that would diminish prospect return
david klein
I’m not no reason to water down the return
elscorchot
“I’m not no…”?
caseym
Moose makes sense on the Rays. 1yr 5 millon with a 6.5 million option. Get it done RFO.
bdpecore
I think Moose will still wind up making $10MM+ next season. I just don’t see anyone offering him a multi-year deal at this point
Rocket32
Yeah…no way Moose will be signing for 5M.
DarkSide830
im sure there are a handful of potential contenders that might be willing to take on Prado’s salary. Hasnt been healthy for two years now, but was pretty reliable before that, so might be a doable gamble.
jbigz12
Take on prado’s salary for what? The marlins need to be keeping talent in and there is no one paying prado even half of what he’s owed to play. He’s toast. Only way they move him is to attach a prospect which is the last thing they should do.
jbigz12
Moose makes a lot of sense as a low cost flip candidate in Baltimore. I’m not exactly buying Renato Nunez as a major league caliber 3B. Odds are we can flip moose after he hits some bombs in OPACY. Seems like a no lose situation. He won’t find a more friendly place to hit unless Milwaukee extends him a multiyear offer.
Corazon5
If the Brewers are interested in bringing him back I’m not sure why he’d choose to go to Baltimore instead. Plus I think the O’s said they weren’t going to be giving out any guaranteed major league deals.
jbigz12
I said unless Milwaukee gets in he wouldn;t have a better spot to go hit. Milwaukee is a significantly better fit if they want to play Shaw at 2nd base again. I personally wouldn’t want Travis Shaw playing 2B but if they’re fine with it, that’s the spot. I don’t see them offering more than a year with Hiura on the way though.
dimitrios in la
You keep proposing expensive free agents, who may or may not perform well and this up their value on the trade market, as no lose situations. Spending millions on a player who’s having a tough time finding a one year deals and therefore blocking the talent you have from attempting to prove itself seems like a losing situation.
jbigz12
Moose signed for 1/6.5. Again dimitiros it’s not your money. If you’d prefer us not to spend any then that’s A-okay. Keep buying in. If you want to talk about wasting a spot look no further than Chris Davis. Playing trey Mancini in left field is an absolute joke. He is not a left fielder and everyone in baseball but us knows that. It’s okay to be critical of the orioles we’ve done plenty of things wrong lately. If you’re fine with Angelos and co. Just pocketing the money they saved on O’day,Britton, Machado,Jones, Beckham, and Brach. Hey, you go right ahead. We took a watered down return for Gausman Just so we could dump O’day’s money. And we acquired intl slot money that we didn’t use.
dimitrios in la
And from all that you’re going to infer that they’re merely “pocketing the money”? I’m all for spending money—on the right things, in the right ways. Right now there’s money being spent on organizational restructuring, and at the right time it will be spent on players.
And btw, the notion that Angelos doesn’t spend is a cliché—and a false one at that.
Blah blah blah
Non-tender Johnathon Schoop and play Travis Shaw at 2nd. ROFL.
Ohhoitsjimbo
I wasn’t buying Shaw playing 2nd last year by any means, but he didn’t poop the bed at 2nd
the kutch
Isn’t Schoop a Twin now??
2id
What are you ROFL’ing at? Shaw looked serviceable at 2B last season. Stearns himself has even admitted the Schoop trade was a mistake.
SFGiants74
Schoop has to much service time to be non-tendered.
dimitrios in la
He is a Minnesota Twin.
Ry.the.Stunner
Obviously not considering the Brewers actually non-tendered him this offseason.
bradthebluefish
3 years, $27MM. Lock up Moose throughout his remain prime years (30-32) and had 2.5 WAR last year.
jmorrison8
2/$18M with a club option for a 3rd at $12M ($3M buyout)
Luckybrew
2years 15m is my guess gets him. Shaw is better than him.
Brizzo123
Brew Crew is too cheap for that but I’m not complaining…NL Central should be fun to watch this year….except for the pirates
KF
Why does every MLBTR post have “(subject), too, is…”, for example? I’ve never seen so many commas. Doesn’t look professional.
mateodh
At some point MLBTR decided that content had to sound more like high school persuasive essays.
Not complaining, if that’s everybody else’s cup of tea and it keeps the site going.
mateodh
People who don’t keep up with prospects will see “strikeout king Harrison,” look him up, and be quite disappointed that he’s not a pitcher.
jayfaraday
It’s honestly crazy that he struck out 215 times even in the minors! Really glad the brewers traded on him when his stock was high after 2017
steelerbravenation
Once a Machado signs with the Phillies Moose will go to the Padres for bout $7 million 1 yr deal
canocorn
Milwaukee far nicer than Frostbite Falls!
greatd
Oakland could be a fit if he comes cheap
Strike Four
Why? Oakland has the best 3B, 1B and DH in the AL.
Strike Four
Moustakas has career 13.9 bWAR in 8 years, that’s an average of 1.7 a year. Its time to stop framing him as some star, he is thoroughly overrated. Kyle Seager has 27.9 bWAR over 8 years too, for a comp.
hiflew
Why are you considering his down years at the start of his career as part of the equation? Everything before his breakout 2015 year is him adjusting to big league pitching. Some players take longer than others to acclimate to the big league level.
Not to mention the fact that WAR only tells part of the story. It is just a single stat, not the whole story. No matter what some people want to believe.
Strike Four
It IS the whole story, that’s why it exists. Sorry your hero actually isn’t any good.
Samuel
@ Strike Four;
Interesting that you state that about WAR after writing that “Oakland has the best 3B, 1B and DH in the AL.”………
_
Oakland’s 3B, 1B and DH didn’t lead the AL in WAR.
jbigz12
Their 3B definitely did. No shot on the DH as long as JDM is around. And 1B? Olson might’ve led all AL 1B in WAR it was a generally weak crop. Top 3 at all those positions would’ve been a fair claim.
davidcoonce74
AL WAR leaders, 3B, 2018:
1. Chapman 8.2 WAR
2. .Ramirez 7.9 WAR
3. Bregman 6.8 WAR
Those are B-R WAR totals; FG has Ramirez ahead of Chapman; not sure exactly why but Ramirez did play about 10% more games than Chapman.
Both FG and B-R show Olson as having the best WAR among AL 1B in 2018. All the best first basemen – Freeman, Goldschmidt, Votto, Carpenter, Bellinger – play in the NL, in large part because few AL first basemen are any good defensively and therefore get big chunks of time at DH as well.
jbigz12
I don’t think any AL 1B were all that good besides Olson regardless of the DH. Who was the 2nd best AL 1B? CJ cron? You’d expect Jose Abreu to bounce back this year but it’s a weak field. Carlos Santana is back as well so there will be a little more competition but Olson still looks like the front runner.
Strike Four
Now Prado is on the bench and Granderson is in RF, Adam Jones’s agent should be calling Miami about that open LF position, Jones-Brinson-Granderson is a nice OF for them to have.
ShieldF123
You just bashed hiflew and stated that WAR “IS the whole story”.
How the hell can you then turn around and call an OF unit that had a total of .9 WAR last year a nice OF? That’s a garbage OF
Samuel
@ ShieldF123;
lol
This kid thinks MLB is a Rotisserie League.
Like most here he makes it up as he goes along, playing “Gotcha” with whatever selected stat proves him right and someone else wrong.
You’ll get used to it.
jbigz12
That’s not a good MLB OF in 2019 but given their minor league alternatives it’s probably the best they can do. Two veterans who can show Brinson a thing or two and can hold the place until Harrison isn’t ready. Maybe you can flip one for a prospect come July as well.
Danthemilwfan
Non tendering school who was a huge mistake and playing Shaw at 2nd where he made 1 error in like 50 games? We also have the best hitting prospect that the brewers have ever had in huira who plays 2nd base ready to come up sometime this season
Danthemilwfan
Also for marlin fans Harrison was absolutely terrible his whole short minor league careers. He went on a 3 month hitting streak right before the season ended so marlins accepted him. He sucks, Brunson is awsome in aaa. Isan Diaz is intriguing also but he sucks defensively
BrewersMVP08
it would be awesome if the brewers could bring moose back. good veteran bat. solid defense. would fit perfectly. my only question is the long term success of shaw at second. I know it worked last year but for a full 162, it could be different. would be nice to add another left handed bat. brewers are still a right handed dominant lineup.
mkeyankee
Yelich and Shaw are lefty, Grandal is a switch hitter and they have 3 lefties on the bench.
stubby66
I wonder if the Brewers could resign Moose then trade Shaw, Albers and Anderson to San Diego for Myers and Mejia. That would give an infield this year of
first Aguilar/ Myers
second Perez/ Lawrie
Short Arcia/ Perez
third Moose/ Spangerd
MannyPineappleExpress9
Why not just resign moose, platoon Jesus and Shaw at first, shaw and Perez at 2b, and Arcia and Perez at short?
Spangenberg/Lawrie/whoever as the extra bench player.
stubby66
Yeah I think that would be a pretty good idea too.
Poutycarrot35
Moose at third would be great for the brewers. Shaw looked better than schoop at 2nd.
