Where does Ian Kinsler fit in the Padres plans beings he signed last month.
bleacherbum
Kinsler will open the season at 2B, Tatis Jr. will have to go through the Kris Bryant treatment where he his held down to gain a year of service time. Expect him up around game 40-50.
Machado will most likely exclusively play 3B, Urias will play SS until Tatis Jr. is promoted, he then will shift to 2B, Kinsler then becomes a UTL type guy off the bench which is fine. Not a huge contract, massive clubhouse contributions with him.
sportsfan101
Kinsler will be great off the bench like he was in Boston great club house guy n can fill in at second anytime you need to give urius or tatis jr a day off. If they can land a number one starter and an innings eater they will look a lot better.
nymetsking
Given he missed much of the second half, I’d be surprised to see him up so quick. That probably pushed his arrival to the end of the year, in which case it might be the 2020.
mlbfan1978
He played a full winter ball season. Should be way past getting in game shape. My guess is you will see him in May as long as he is not struggling to hit AAA pitchers.
Wolverines2
Yeah, there is nobody in San Diego who is under the impression that Tatis Jr. comes up any later than May. Once they get the additional year of control, FTJ is at SS and Kinsler is utility player.
JPADA
Machado 3b
Urias ss
Kinsler 2b
Hosmer 1b
Tatis will spend the bulk of the year in AAA since he doesn’t have any ab’s above AA ball.
Ryan W
Does the removal of San Diego as a suitor for Harper impact his offers? Or does it make no difference
Polish Hammer
Good question. I think he has an agreement in place already and will be announced soon but not soon enough to steal Machado’s thunder.
Ryan W
I also wonder – does this provide adequate alleviation for the potential strike?
SanDiegoPaul
I think we all new that one of the owners was going to crack eventually. I’m very excited to see Machado on my home team and not for some iconic pre 1900’s dynasty. I think the strike is pretty unavoidable at this point, right?
I mean the money teams make vs what they put out and how they screw these guys out of service time. Nah, it’s strike time.
sundance17
Another bad contract, he is not worth anything near that much… Those contract have never worked!
SanDiegoPaul
Dude… no one is worth that much money. Do you really think you deserve what you get paid?
Wolverines2
Which contracts? Before you respond, please do not allow yourself to type the words “Cano” or “Pujols.” Hugely different in terms of age. Cano is currently older than Machado will be in TEN years! A-Rod? Not a horrible contract actually. Now consider that he joins a team that is filled with young, CHEAP, talented players – some have arrived and many more on the way…doesn’t look too bad to me and unless you have some other examples, I just don’t think that argument holds up.
petrie000
If the Padres see a jump in gate numbers and more national TV exposure because of this, he actually is well worth the investment
How you define ‘worked’ and ‘worth it’ is really not as simple as a lot if people think.
Strike Four
“bad” for who? just the billionaire owners, who are already making profit ham over fist due to the players.
why do you love billionaires saving their money so much? seriously who cares
petrie000
They’re not even that bad for the owners. Unless the player they sign goes straight into the toilet (think Chris Davis), the extra publicity they get just translates to extra revenue, offsetting the cost significantly.
Everybody likes to cite Pujols as an example of a crippling contract, but even after signing him, Hamilton AND Wilson, the Angels were still making money…
TenandFive
Is there one of these mega contracts that pretty much anyone looking at it in the rear view thinks it was a good investment in considering both term and dollars?
Jose R
The thing about long term deals are that you’re pretty much know you’re not gonna get much production towards the latter part of the deal so you’re pretty much paying extra for the 3-5 years that you will get mega production so we shouldn’t be surprised when a 36 year old Cabera isn’t putting up 3 crown numbers
worzelmangel
The first A-Rod contract.
Strike Four
Votto has been worth it, Cano too. A great deal of them are, way more than you think. The media LOVES to bring up the bad ones constantly but no one cares when they’re producing. The “worth every penny” list is rarely written, because the billionaire owners control the media and they decide that the narrative is that players make too much and that money the players don’t get should by default go to the billionaire owner. Its infuriating to watch all of you buy right into this framing.
jessethegreat 2
Verlanders deal, though not bank breaking was huge and I think for the most part he’s lived up to that one.
Dtownwarrior78
How about instead of celebrating tnt big named free agents like Machado and Harper we frown upon what’s happening to quality FA’s that are STILL looking for a home with Spring Training already starting. The owners should be ashamed, pocketing these dollars instead of spending on these veteran players that have made them their millions over the years. In 1994 I blamed players for striking. When it happens in the next few seasons, I will 100% back the players and the MLBPA
SanDiegoPaul
Amen, but I do think the whole system is flawed. You will always see ownership paying for past performance. And you will only see that as long as you see players making 500k while putting up 30 & 100.
Jose R
Trout at 7 years $280 million that’s a joke.Trout if he stays healthy will surpass Machados contract and Harpers.
I’m thinking 10 years $400 million
mlbfan1978
Unlikely. He will be 29 when he it’s the market. These guys are 26. I bet he gets more per year but won’t get ten years.
SanDiegoPaul
“1978” Damn… that’s an excellent point.
Strike Four
Imagine thinking Trout would be a bad player or not worth the money at any point in his life. Shame on you, mlbfan1978, shame….
SanDiegoPaul
Trout will be half a bill if he demands it. Dude has everything Manny and Bryce has and much more with nothing but a sterling clubhouse presence. 10 & 500. Mark it, put me down.
Jose R
Trout hands down is what any Owner,GM,Manager, teammate would want he’s the ideal player who never gets involved in any negative situations and is fan friendly aside from being the best baseball player so with that being said teams who didn’t make a run at Machado and Harper are probably gonna make a run for Trout and he will command the 10 years or even more at a record per year average Dodgers Yankees Phillies Cubs to name a few will push the bidding war closer to $500 like Paul said
Basebal101
You mar or may not be correct about what Trout commands, but why would you included the Dodger’s in that? They haven’t gotten into any sort of bidding war or paid any long term contracts to anyone since they were bought and have clearly stated they won’t.
Jose R
Well just because they’re the dodgers and because eventually they’ll spend money and why not spend it on Trout
I mean they do have the funds to pay for a player like Trout
rgreen
Maybe,if Trout has 2 more MvP caliber seasons. But he’ll be 29 also.A 10 year deal for him takes him through age 38,same deal for Harper & Machado gos to 35.Its those later 30s years teams are avoiding paying big dollars to.Thats why Harper & Machado were special cases, there aren’t many 26yr old star caliber players even reaching free agency.
Basebal101
Except Harper is far from a super star
Strike Four
/has a literal 10 WAR season
/not a super star though, because trolldummy101 sez so
rgreen
Even though it’s part popularity contest, his 6 all star games in 7 seasons says otherwise.Add to that a MvP award, and he’s really just entering his prime.Theres no doubt he changes any lineup he’s added to.
Halos2021WSChamps
Fans vote in allstars so no way does that make a valid argument… He had 1 stellar year , and a couple solid years that would compare to about 25 other outfielders. he should have been an all-star at most 2 times
davidcoonce74
Harper, even in a down year in 2018, was fourth in the majors in times on base. He led the majors in walks. He scored 100 runs and drove in 100 runs. That’s a down year. The defensive numbers were bad, but that’s not consistent with his past performance.
rgreen
Even if you argue that only 2 of the years were legit all star seasons, that still makes him a legit star caliber player. And even in the years he was hitting in the 240s,he was putting up high ob%s,as well as solid power/speed numbers.20+ 2b/hr/sb in 1 of them,30+ 2b/hr 100+ r/rbi this past season. There aren’t 25 other outfielders that have gotten on-base in over 34% of their plate appearances(and that’s his low mark) over the last 7 years, and still putting up above average power numbers.
Jose R
I wouldn’t be surprised if he lands a 12 year deal with player option at year 4 he’s that good
Strike Four
Trout is going to be elite every year until he’s at least 42.
SanDiegoPaul
Man… now I’m thinking Trout won’t get more than a 7 year deal. It’ll be epic money though.
rgreen
As a Phillies fan,i think on the surface they’d be ok if they don’t end up with Harper now.But what about the effects coming up short could have,on players already on the roster. Some were openly saying they expected 1 of the big fish.Coming up short could cause some doubt, especially considering the Yankees,Red Sox & Dodgers weren’t even involved.
Thronson5
What happened to the Phillies spending stupid money? Still think they get Harper but I wouldn’t say that’s spending stupid money. I like the get for the Padres even though I’m a Dodgers fan. It makes sense for them. Doesn’t make them a contender right away but it is a big piece in the right direction and they do have a lot of going good players. If they end up getting other big player wether it’s position player or pitcher they can make it a little harder on the Rockies and Dodgers by making the NL West more competitive this season.
Cat Mando
Thronson5………..
I’m still amazed how many people focus only on that one small phrase and nothing else, much like they focus just on Manny’s “Johnny Hustle” phrase and nothing else (like how many times Harper has been called out or even benched by every manager he has played for, for not hustling). Here is what Middleton said…..
“We’re going into this expecting to spend money, and maybe even be a little bit stupid about it. We just prefer not to be completely stupid.”
“We don’t have like one need, it’s not like we need a left-handed relief pitcher in the eighth inning. We got lots of ways to go to improve this ballclub. Starting pitching. Bullpen. In the field. At the plate.”
“It’s good because it gives you the opportunity to explore a lot of different ways, but it’s difficult because it creates a lot of options. So, you’re talking to a lot of people, and do a lot of evaluations.’’
“Every free agent now is apparently my free agent, As Andy likes to tell me, ‘John, we are playing baseball after 2019, so, you can’t spend every last dime after this year.”
“You got to have something in the tank for future years.’’
That said, it’s been reported that the Phillies FO prefers Machado but ownership likes Harper. Ownership blew this one. Manny is a more complete player and a better fit. If they plan on spending $300M it should have been on Machado. Congrats to to the Padres
Strike Four
Phillies need to get Kimbrel or else they’re lying baby cowards
goldenmisfit
That funny moment when you hear delusional San Diego fans who really believe the addition of one guy at a 10 year deal for 300 million will change them from a 96 lost team to a playoff team overnight. I am begging you all in San Diego get drug tested. No pitching aside for Machado no hitting your bullpen is garbage you’re lucky if you win 70 games.
Basebal101
I agree! But dayem that was brutally blunt.lol
Senioreditor
If they sign/trade for pitching maybe 80 wins?
Wolverines2
You are beyond ignorant. Excited Padre fan here. Have been online all day. I haven’t seen a single Padre fan suggest anything of the sort. Without adding pitching they will be lucky to be a .500 club THIS YEAR. Look up a few things about the pitching depth in their minor league system. Look up where San Diego’s bullpen ranked HISTORICALLY last year. If they add pitching, they might have a chance to be better. Not sure I see them making the playoffs no matter what they do with the rotation this year because their real core offensively is centered around guys who are just getting to the big leagues now. Regardless, I’ll go get drug tested to make you happy. Do me a favor and do some research though while I’m peeing in a cup.
Strike Four
Not a Padre fan, but you would be really stupid to think SD would not be a contender in 2021. Tatis is almost here. Gore is almost here. If they get hits on 3 out of their 20 or so excellent pitching prospects, they will be stacked in a hurry.
They really should/could get Harper, Keuchel and Kimbrel too. Why not?
Melchez
Could you see a trade of Fulmer and Castellanos for Myers and a couple prospects? If so, what kind of prospects?
Logan Allen? Josh Naylor? Xavier Edwards?
Strike Four
No NL team is taking a DH-only Castellanos.
Seriously, he’s not an OF. He’s very terrible defensively. Bat is good though, he’s a DH.
Melchez
Castellanos isn’t DH only.
Strike Four
Yes he is, he’s one of the worst outfielders in baseball.
petrie000
But he has a lot of put-outs, so he must have great range
(Even if the actual range metrics say he’s terrible)
Basebal101
I truly hope this makes the Pads a little more competitive. I know a lot of Padre fans who are loyal and stuck with their basement dwelling team for years. Maybe they make .500?
Jose R
The Padres aren’t looking to win the World Series this year Machado is young enough for them to allow their top prospects to come up and win with Machado in 3-4 years or if they wanna speed up the process maybe trade for some starters
If Tatis and Machado pan out to be a dynamic duo they’ll be good for years to come
Senioreditor
I assume they move Myers now to free up money next year…..maybe for pitching?
Wolverines2
Don’t think they could get much value for him due to his contract, but that would be nice…He will be moved for a bad pitching contract perhaps, but that doesn’t save money. Hopefully he can stay healthy. when he does, he is a productive baseball player.
frankiegxiii
Even as a Dodger fan I can’t believe that Madison Bumgarner is valued less than Patrick Corbin, Corbin has had one good year, is it a coincidence that he all of a sudden had his best performance the year before hitting free agency? I don’t buy it, Bumgarner has dealt with some injuries but I think he’ll bounce back, who knows, maybe he’ll end up on the Astros and gain 5mph on his fastball.
Le Grande Orangerie
The ‘baseball is broken’ narrative has now switched from ‘baseball is broken because no one is giving 4 free agents mega-contracts’ to:
‘baseball is broken because, well, ok, someone gave Machado the biggest free agent contract ever but everyone should have, or else it took too long’. Sigh.
Eric P
does anyone know where you can find the breakdown on each MLB team’s annual revenues, expenses, and profit?
petrie000
You can’t. They keep that information very closely guarded.
