Anthony Rendon said today that he isn’t putting any deadlines on extension talks with the Nationals, as Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com was among those to report.
Emphasizing that he’s the boss in his relationship with agent Scott Boras, Rendon said he’s ready to listen to offers at any time of the year. He doesn’t expect contract talks to become a distraction if they drag into the season, but says that “if it does become an issue, then I’ll address it.”
Surely the preference on all sides would be to wrap something up during camp, but it seems there’s still a gulf to be bridged in terms of price. Rendon has, not unjustifiably, staked out a high asking price. He declined to get into details, telling reporters he’d rather leave them guessing, but did acknowledge ongoing chatter. Said Rendon: “if both parties can be happy, then we’ll see.”
Rendon’s stance, then, generally echoes that of fellow star third baseman Nolan Arenado, who is exploring the possibility of a long-term deal with the Rockies. It’s interesting to wonder whether those parallel extension negotiations could influence one another, both because the players are similarly valuable on the field and because the presence or absence of one on next winter’s market could significantly impact the earning outlook for the other.
These players have surely taken note of Manny Machado’s recent payday in considering their own possible free agent futures. Of course, both Rendon and Arenado are on track to enter the market at significantly older (but still youthful) ages, but each has an argument to command an average salary in the range of Machado’s $30MM. We examined Rendon’s extension case at the outset of the offseason.

Lock this guy up!
Erik
He’s only doing this in hopes to get a bigger contract. I hate to say it but this guy is gonna crash hard by his early to mid 30s call it a gut feeling. He just seems like he’s gonna be one of those guys. He knows teams aren’t signing guys past 30 so he wants his money now
Geoinfoguy
“I hate to say it but this guy is gonna crash hard by his early to mid 30s call it a gut feeling”….
LOL thanks Captain Obvious I’m glad you paid attention to the history of Free Agency
Charles Russell
And that he wants a bigger contract. Gee, you mean a lower salary is not an option. Isn’t that what’s holding up Harper? Everyone’s offering him too much money?
Mystery Team:: We want to give you $350 million.
Harper: I’m really looking for something around league minimum.
Nationals: $300 million?
Harper: Nah, dude.
Padres: $250 million?
Harper: This ain’t workin, fellas.

Feelings don’t win or lose games. The kid can ball.
Cam
He’s not exactly going to be doing it in the hopes he gets a smaller contract, is he?
Papabueno
He’s only doing this to get a bigger contract? He’s discussing an extension with the Nats (1 team), when he could wait until the season is over and have 30 teams to negotiate with.

I love Rendon. He’s a throwback, no nonsense, gritty player that truly loves the game of baseball.
zwmartin
Lol he is actually pretty open about how he doesn’t like baseball very much, but sure. google.com/search?rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS704US704&hl……23747.39475..39682…19.0..1.248.8205.0j47j4……0….1………33i160j0i22i30j46i275j0i131j0j0i67j46j33i299j33i22i29i30j30i10.eXrftrlCWCE

So because of one comment he made almost 5 years ago, he hates baseball?
It sounds like he doesn’t enjoy watching it, but that has very little to do with playing the game.
As far as his enjoying the four days off to sleep in his own bed, who doesn’t enjoy time off work?
I love my job but still relish days off.
Chicks Dig the Longball
Just because you don’t like your job doesn’t mean you are worth hiring. Most people don’t like their job.
Bryzzo2016
Smart on Rendon’s part. He doesn’t want to compete with Arrenado on the open market next winter.
its_happening
Rendon’s value certainly went up thanks to Machado and to a lesser extent Arenado. Perfect time to talk extension and an excellent strategy to say “I am open to talk during the season”.
bbatardo
I wonder what it’d take to lock him up? 7 years 200 mill? I can’t imagine he expects 10 years, but probably wants close to 30M a year.
Bryzzo2016
6/170 seems fair for both sides.

What we may be missing is that if Harper is still poking around with the Nats trying to get a better or another offer, this is Rendon’s way of making sure the Nats know he’ll be amenable to a reasonable extension, and is sending a signal that he’ll be easier to sign and cheaper than Harper.
“… he’s the boss in his relationship with agent Scott Boras”: Translation: “If I think the deal is OK I’ll sign it regardless of what Scott says.”
He doesn’t want Harper to get HIS money, assuming there is still an outside chance that Harper goes back to DC.
Koamalu
He was one of the best hitters in baseball the past 2 seasons. 6/$180mm. Do it Washington. Harper wants more than you are willing to give so lock up this guy.
lettersandnumbersonly
it comes down to; do i get a reasonable salary with reasonable guarantees. Rendon isn’t after record contracts or lifetime committments. give him a 5yr/$125m offer with an opt out after 3yrs and some performance/ games played incentives and maybe throw in a 6th yr team option and i think you got one of the better players and people locked up.
batty
I’ve never even heard a whisper about him being anything less than a good teammate and clubhouse guy. He’s not a flashy look at me type and he shows up to play hard. He’s the type that, even after his skills erode some, he’s worth keeping around as a model on how to conduct yourself as a player. You get 3 or 4 guys with his similar play and you’ve got a very good core.
I think talks of an extension, for him, will pick up quickly once Harper signs elsewhere.
James Ryu
Now that everyone has witnessed how cold market is, they will even deal with distractions that come with negotiating extension during the season to get it done…
bigkempin
Assuming he has another typical year for himself something like 5-6 years at $25-30M per year seems fair for both sides. Nats already have 3 large contracts so I doubt they’d be willing to go much more than that.
SupremeZeus
He should wait and get the White Sox involved so he can use them as leverage for more dollars from his preferred suitor.
HossBossington
Knowing what I know about Rendon, if i were the Nats there’s no way I’d lock him up. At least contractually.
lettersandnumbersonly
knowing what i know about HossBossington, there’s no way I’d pay much attention to anything he had to say. At least as it relates to pretty much anything.
cleribe
But you paid enough attention to respond…
nonadhominem
Yes, but letters was funny. You were not.
MiserablePadreFan
He’s no Manny Machado. Psssh
lettersandnumbersonly
he’s no Taylor Swift either
MiserablePadreFan
Rendon is dating Taylor Swift? Right after she dumped Pete Davidson too!
lettersandnumbersonly
it’s not like she had anything in common with a Wimbledon champ anyways
mays2425
The way this winter has gone I would be too.
bjupton100
If they don’t sign him, they should trade him now to increase their return. Third base has alot of talent coming up. Him to the Braves for a pitching prospect or two and Riley (I think) their third base prospect. I’d like him on the Rays, and would offer Duffy but would have to wait for the season to begin so he (Duffy) gains value.
batty
Why would the Braves trade for him when they signed Donaldson to a 1 year $23MM deal this off season? Let alone for 3 prospects, including their 3rd baseman of the future.
its_happening
Same reason they signed Donaldson; they can never have enough Third Baseman to fill their pitching concerns.
bobtillman
Unless there’s a character issue, and I haven’t heard of any, can we all just admit Rendon’s the most under-rated guy in MLB? Google “solid MLB-er” and his picture pops up. And he’s a whoooooooooooole lot more than that.
BlueJayFan1515
Lol I did search that up just to see if you were lying, and I didn’t find a picture of him until I found the picture attached to this article.
bravesfan
Trade him away, we all want to see the nationals tank. Let’s be honest
basquiat
I think Rizzo will git ‘er done and keep Tony Two Bags with the Nats.
lettersandnumbersonly
Rizzo’s comments have been nothing but optimistic, positive and sounding like an honest attempt to keep Rendon part of the National’s future plans.
You might say, ‘well this is just part of negotiations’.
Not necessarily, it’s just as easy and often telling to be very neutral in responses.
I’m optimistic for a deal getting done on sn extension. As long as the Nats don’t lowball him or get too hampered by trying to defer too much, I think they have an excellent shot. The primary concern I have is how explosive the competitive market has been at similar positioning. Machado getting $30mill AAV, Arenado getting a tremendous arbitration deal and the results of his extension negotiations… people are going to take notice
Papabueno
I’m a huge Nats fan. Watch almost every game. Tony Two Bags is so underrated it’s crazy. He flat gets it done, with the bat and the glove. He’s also extremely humble and always praises his teammates, and never takes credit for the team’s success.
You couldn’t ask for a better role model for younger players. If the choice is re-sign Harper, or extend Rendon, I’m taking Anthony every time.
