The Yankees have agreed to a minor-league deal with right-hander Danny Farquhar, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred (via Twitter). He’ll receive an invitation to MLB camp, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand adds on Twitter.
It’s yet another bit of good news for Farquhar, who has been firmly on the upswing since a terrifying medical episode last year. He has made a remarkable recovery from a ruptured brain aneurysm — incurred in the White Sox’ dugout after an appearance in late April — and received clearance in late November to begin working back toward the mound.
Soon to turn 32, Farquhar will assuredly not enter Spring Training as a favorite to crack a loaded Yankees pen. But he could represent an interesting depth option if he’s able to pick up where he left off. Though he has not been terribly effective in recent years, Farquhar was at times a high-quality reliever for the Mariners and Rays and carries a lifetime 12.3% swinging-strike rate in the majors.
Just here for an Xabial comment.
LOL. Where do the Yankees have these roster spots? I realize Gray is gone but it seems like they turned 50% of the roster over.
Minor league deal
MiLb
He’s certainly not a favorite to make the team but it’s not impossible. The Yankees carry 7-8 relievers. The top 6 are locks, but the rest are open based on need and performance

They may choose to keep guys like German, Adams, Loasiga and Cessa stretched out to be ready to start, so they could end up in Scranton, while a guy like Danny Farquhar, a true reliever, could make the team.
Tarpley is a funky lefty potential loogy that will get a look too.
Yeah… I think Tarpley has a stronger chance, but if he has a bad spring, anything can happen. Even though the Yankee bullpen is stacked, Boone rarely uses the top guys in games they are behind in…so the 7-8th relievers still see some action. Unless they resign Adam Warren, of course.
Forgot Kahne
Kahnle and Tarpley are basically his biggest competition, yes. But nothing will be handed to any of them in spring training. They’ll take the one who looks like he can help the team most.
I cant wait for Kahnle. I think he’ll rebound; Kahnle was stud for Yanks in 2017 playoffs; but lost in 2018. I still believe in Kahnle!
Sometimes minor league options factor in too. Teams are thinking depth – especially early in the season.
@Stratocaster,
But team-control matters more.
Teams are thinking long-term.
Kahnle may be out of minor league options, but…. being sent down in lost 2018 season pushed his FA clock to 2021, instead of 2020.
Who cares about minor league options when you control player rights via arbitration?
As of right now it’s Kahnle and Cessa unless a trade, injury or DFA happens since they are both out of options.
Kahnle is going to get every chance to prove 2018 was a fluke.
One of the 2 spots has to go to long reliever. So only 1 spot remaining and I like Tarpley for that.
Its not about that.
He has virtually no chance of making the roster unless a glut of injuries happen.
His agent is friendly with Cashman so they are letting him come to camp, get a little exposure in the Hope’s he gets a major league deal with someone else.
It happens all the time.
Agents just don’t have great players, and its good business to help out their lower profile clients.
How do you explain that to your boss (or wife for that matter)? Oh I was just on my phone because the Yankees signed a pitcher to a MILB deal and I was waiting for some random dude to comment on it so I could pick him apart. I’ll get back to work in just a sec.
That would require having a boss or wife.
Ha.
how do you explain to your boss or wife that you were waiting for a guy to wait on someone on mlbtr so you can just pick him apart?
rabbit holes are fun
everyone knows he will either post something that is incomprehendable, or a string of plagerism, and/or something inane.
clepto, is that you 3rdStrikeLooking?
You have similar writing styles.
X, seriously. Stop. Please. Go away. Not everyone on here has multiple accounts, unlike yourself. I don’t, only reason bb1600 does is because you had his other banned. Seriously just stop. Sorry, if you’d like, please Ryan stop. Or whatever personality of yours is taking control today.
@cubsfan2489
You obsessed with Ryan, always mention him.
We are nothing alike. We don’t even root same team, I will always root for Yankees till I die, Ryan is Pads’..?
It’s absurd you blame me bb1600 ban. How is it my fault, bb1600 got banned. He got banned for being stupid.
I see you trying to follow in his path.
Funny you are the only one that downvoted my comment. You are one of the same. Ryan was a troll, a la you.
What? You have 3 downvotes.
X is pathetic
Please stop filling the comments section with this preposterous internet beef.
Then please ban the one person who won’t stop provoking everyone, X. Thanks, Jeff.
Internet beef. Sounds delicious.
Rooting for different teams doesn’t prove anything wrt to two commenters not being the same person. Some, like Pads Fans and outinleftfield, use it as a cover-up.
That all being said, xabial sounds nothing like west coast ryan and cubsfan you are one to talk about “provoking everyone.”
And X, I’m obsessed with Ryan? He went, sorry, you went out of your way back then to keep commenting on articles weeks old, to try and egg not only myself, but others on. I’d say you’re obsessed with bb1600. Anyone downvotes you and instantly it’s, “you have 30 other accounts! You’re the real troll!” I really hope you grow up soon.
Xabial comments are way more tired than anything Xabial has to say.
This is a great ball player I wish nothing but the best for him and his family
I must have missed when the ChiSox let him go! Ugh!
ugh, at least most trolls dont care to comment as frequently as you do…
I’m happy he’s healthy
Good for him.
After what he’s been through, this is gravy. Good luck to him.
Isn’t he the bad lord from Shrek?
That was Lord Farquaad.
It can happen to you too!
haha brilliant
Cashman loves to buy low on guys who miss bats. Not expecting anything out of this guy but it’s just minor league depth. I’m so happy he recovered from his aneurism too !
He can’t do any worse than Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray was a starter.
I have jealous for Yankees. This guy has skills and they got him cheap, on MILB contract? He will have good, almost great spring and they’ll be able to trade him or keep him for depth. Cashman, you beautiful baby, we have jealous from Detroit.
I wish him all the best. I despise the Yankees, but if he makes it with them I’ll be rooting for him.
Maybe he makes the team out of spring training ^_^
There is no chance of that.
That makes two Yankees I’ll be rooting for now lol.
I thought the same of cutch when the Giants traded him. Player should be before team in terms of favorites. (That’s just my opinion, feel free to disagree)
You took the exact words out of my mouth Wig
Contenders Now!
Part of me wants the Yankees to win the WS with him on the roster just so he gets a ring.
Hopefully this turns into a feel-good story
Imagine him getting the final outs of the World Series to help the Yankees win it all. What a story of perseverance that would be
Sober up
whoa dude. that’s heavy
It’s already a feel good story. The fact he has stepped back on a mound in any capacity is an amazing feat. Pulling for him all the way!
He’s Machado’s cousin’s uncle’s neighbor’s nephew of a guy that used to sell hot dogs on a street corner in Manny’s home town. A clear sign that Manny will sign with someone…eventually.
That’s former Yankee, Danny Farquhar. Traded for Ichiro
This is one of those stories that transcends baseball. How can you not root for this guy with all your heart? Even this Red Sox fan will be pulling for him to have an all-star calibre season.
Wow. I figured he’d be done. Good for him.
Xabial will call the Yankees a class act in some form or another because of this.
Everyday, I bet you give them a new reason to regret unbanning you.
You promised me you’d stop…
What antibelt did wasnt ok? wouldnt surprise me if they removed his post.
Yo xabial, I’m fine with whatever Yankees stuff you want to post here, and anyone who isn’t should just ignore it and not troll… if you’re excited about moves the Yankees make and want to express that, you have every right to do so… but it’s more than a little annoying when you can’t stop talking about up/down votes, ppl making multiple accounts just to downvote you, and talking about how people should be banned. Keep it about baseball. That’s what you want, that’s what everyone else wants.
Ninja Cash
Glad to see his life is on track. I’m with the consensus here, not a Yank fan but pulling for him.
Danny said Farqu to every other MLB team.
happy to see him doing well. hopefully he gets a few appearances at least this seaon.
Obviously everyone wishes him well (at least I hope so), but I admit I’m confused; as a Free Agent, he could have gone anywhere. The Yanks seems to represent the LEAST possible place for a reliever. Most of these AAAA guys (and Farquhar’s pretty much that) look for opportunity first; chances are pretty good that if I’m an OFer, I have little interest in Pawtucket, Boston’s AAA team. Even if I do well there, it’s likely I’m going to stay there.
Just about every other bullpen offers more opportunity than the Yanks.
You’re an idiot if you think he’s a AAAA pitcher. Literally look at his numbers with the mariners and Rays. Not amazing but definitely well above average. Someone is very ill informed or just doesn’t take the time to look at a guy’s stats.
Great signing
Meet the Farquhar’s
All beefs and joking aside, whether or not he makes the Yankees squad, this is a remarkable journey. Congrats to him and I wish him nothing but the best!!!
Good for him. It is an absolute medical miracle that he is in a position to pitch at a high level again. Hope he makes it back all the way.
