As star closer Craig Kimbrel continues to wait for a new contract, Dan Hayes of The Athletic raised the notion recently (subscription link) that the Twins could position themselves as a landing spot. Kimbrel has reportedly been seeking a five-year deal, though Hayes reports the Twins would only be interested in a shorter-term pact with a high annual value. As Hayes explores, the Twins’ recent but failed bid for Yasmani Grandal suggests that they’re willing to make a run at players they deem to be unique assets in the market. None of that is a declaration that Minnesota is actively pursuing Kimbrel at the moment, but the connection is still of some note.
Were Kimbrel to take a contract of three or fewer years, it’s fair to speculate that he’d look to topple the $17.33MM annual value record for a reliever — currently held by the Rockies’ Wade Davis. Recent comments from Twins baseball ops leaders Derek Falvey and Thad Levine largely downplayed the possibility of any marquee addition to the roster, and Kimbrel would see enhanced interest from more than just Minnesota if his asking price dipped to three or fewer years. With a 2019 payroll that currently checks in more than $20MM south of last season’s Opening Day mark and zero guaranteed contracts in 2020, the Twins arguably have the most financial flexibility of any team in baseball, though that hardly means they should be expected to make a big free-agent splash.
More out of Minnesota…
- Speaking of the Twins’ interest in Grandal, Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN/SKOR North reported in a recent podcast episode (Twins talk starts around 11:50 mark) that Minnesota was willing to go to three years at a total of $13-15MM per season in order to bring Grandal aboard. Grandal’s camp, however, told the Twins quickly and definitively that he wasn’t interested in signing there. Given that Grandal landed one state over in Wisconsin, it’s unlikely that geography played much of a role, so perhaps signing with a clearer contender was a priority. Since signing, Grandal has also spoken about the emphasis he placed on finding an annual value commensurate with the game’s top catchers. It’s rare to see a player turn down three or four years (the latter reportedly offered by the Mets) in order to receive an AAV boost of this size, but every player is wired differently, and Grandal may simply be more open to risk than most. If he has a strong 2019, he could come out ahead next offseason when he won’t have a qualifying offer hanging over his head.
- While the Kimbrel scenario may not be all that realistic for Twins fans, Minnesota is still looking to add a reliever, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. Right-hander Ryan Madson is among the players Minnesota is considering as the team looks to further deepen its ’pen, Heyman notes. Madson logged 52 2/3 innings with 9.2 K/9, 2.7 BB/9, 1.20 HR/9 and a 42.6 percent ground-ball rate in 2018 — solid secondary numbers that generally look more appealing than his 5.47 ERA. Beyond that, Madson’s velocity actually improved over its 2017 levels, as he averaged 95.9 mph on his four-seamer and 95.4 mph on his sinker, per Statcast. Madson also posted a 13.9 percent swinging-strike rate that was his best since returning from a three-year injury absence in 2015. The 38-year-old was used heavily in the postseason by the Dodgers and looked to wear down in the World Series after strong showings in the NLDS and NLCS. However, he posted an intriguing 31-to-5 K/BB ratio from the All-Star break through the completion of the World Series and figures to come at an affordable rate.
- Meanwhile, Wolfson tweets that the Twins have both Madson and righty Bud Norris on their radar. However, he notes that the Twins have also been hoping to add relievers on minor league contracts, and it doesn’t seem likely that either Madson or Norris would be amenable to such a deal at this juncture. Norris worked to a 3.59 ERA 10.5 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 1.25 HR/9 and a 42.6 percent ground-ball rate in 57 2/3 innings with the Cardinals last season.

I really think the Twins are going to win that division. If they can get bounce backs from 2 or Buxton, Sano, and Schoop. They will easily have the best offense in the Central. Would not be shocked if they sign Kimbrel and then trade for a Bumgarner or someone like that at the trade deadline.
its_happening
When Twins management decide they want to win the division, I will agree with you. Dipping a toe in the water rather than jumping in with both feet isn’t going to cut it. AL Central is vulnerable and the Twins are not taking full advantage. They can absolutely take the division – only if they want it bad enough. They don’t.
heater
Agreed 100%. Seems very odd to me.
helberg23
Agree I think we could get a big named ace lefty at the deadline or even sign bryce and kimbrel and trade kepler and others for a Danny Duffy or a MadBum
Basebal101
I don’t really agree but I would love to see it happen. Baseball needs more balance.
someoldguy
they certainly could win the division because there is so much Luck in baseball. But to win post season you must build for post season as a general rule: That means 3 good or better starters.. Preferably a 1A ,1B, 1C starters.
johnny koshi
Twins fan keeps talking if this player does this and this player does that and this player rebounds & etc….
1. You have very little pitching. (Although I like Berrios)
2. You could “if this player…” w all 30 teams.
3. If you think this lineup is putting up 6 runs a game you’re out of your mind.
K city up & down that lineup.
4. Odd you just dismiss that Indians starting rotation — Their 3 & 4 are better than your 1 & 2.
5. WSox are going to better than you think.

Who are you calling a twins fan, punk?

Punk? I said “Twins fan”. If you’re not a Twins fan – – that wouldn’t be directed @ you, now would it? Have a good day.

Imagine if Kimbrel took a one-year contract… —Kidding!
But think he’d be lucky to get ~100M, yet alone $80M
lowtalker1
The only possible way I see that happening is if he signs a fair base salary with incentives that can reach that number
But, we know, that will never happen
TeddyBallgameYazJimEd
Funny thing is this story isn’t even about rumors .it’s about the fact that there is no rumor connecting Kimbrel to Minnesota.. it’s actually sad..
And lazy.

Would be great to see it happen with Kimbrel. But as a Twins fan I know there is about 0.001% chance it does!

You’re being too optimistic 😛
dematteo1982
The Twins can be a real threat with another pickup or two. Lets say they pulled off signing Kuechel and Kimbrel. With Cleveland not doing much…these moves would certainly make the division race interesting. Buxton and Sano break through and become the players they were projected to be, Schoop has a bounce back year and Cruz maintains his level of play….adding Kuechel and Kimbrel puts them right there..And without payroll commitments beyond 2020…Harper..Machado…Kuechel and Kimbrel could all be had if they so choose.
BartoloHRball
I *really* don’t like CLE’s off-season. They haven’t done anything to improve, thus they are the next rung down from HOU/NYY/BOS. Even if they get into the playoffs, they will still be significant underdogs to beat any of the other playoff teams. Their window is closing, so standing pat seems…..like a poor decision.
impactrookies
Lol….you think the Twins are planning to have an mlbtr takeover? Twins spend 700 million and sign harper, machado, kimbrel, and kuechel!!! Meanwhile in boston, the Red Sox polish their trophy, half smirk and whisper, “cute.”
ohyeadam
If, if, if, if , if. Waaaaaayyyy too many ???????? on the roster for optimism. That same type of optimism has bitten us Twins fan in the behind for decades. Win now move? Ain’t gonna happen. All the other mid market teams make a push every now and again. Not the Twins though. They’re the best AAAA team out there.
pinkerton
KImbrel to the Twins makes a staggering amount of sense.
Which is why it probably won’t happen.
Binks
Fans are poopooing the Twins
dontpanik
Ain’t happening. If anything the Twins are looking to have Francisco Romero close. They’ll pickup another low AAV reliever and will be players at the trade deadline if they are still contending.
Why would they throw Joe Mauer money at a guy pitching an inning a game?
jd396
Yeah, relievers are of minimal value in the game these days, it being 1968 and all.
kripes-brewers
Why would the Twins spend $20M/yr on a closer when the nickel and dimed the rest of the roster. It just makes no sense, and I think this is much more smoke than fire. Small market teams can’t risk big, long term contracts, so I can see something much shorter term, 2yrs $38M, or go the Brewers route and sign him for a year at top dollar. I realize the central is kind of up for grabs, but the twinkies have lottery tickets all over that roster.
BartoloHRball
If they had a guy on a 1-2 yr deal that they could flip at the deadline…it makes some sense to roll the dice on a pricier reliever, but as it stands now…Kimbrel would be a waste there. They are still at least 2-3 pieces away from being competitive in October. Cleveland hasn’t looks this vulnerable in years, too bad no one is pushing all-in for the division.
kripes-brewers
I agree. But you have to wonder why Kimbrel would want to take that deal. I’d have to imagine these guys want a shot at winning it all, and cashing in, if they can get both. I just don’t see a match here. White Sox have a better shot at contention near term inho… such a long season; anything can happen!
someoldguy
This front office is the same as the last: waiting for their sure thing. The “WIDE OPEN” window. of course there are no sure things in baseball. The White Sox are coming , Detroit is coming. Luck, Injuries, the vagaries of the season ( like the snow outs when the Twins lead the division last year).. all happen. To be successful you have to be a good gambler, those sure thing types virtually never rake in a a big pot.
Jjbeach
Top money was $17.33MM for a reliever?
Offer him $25MM for a one-year incentive-driven contract, and see if he blinks.
nentwigs
SERIOUS interest in Kimbrel and Madson by the Twins?
SMOKESCREEN = to appease and attract ticket buyers and season ticket holders.
POHLAD family are bankers and profit oriented = too CHEAP to spend $$ on difference makers.. WINNING is too expensive. PROFIT comes from being CLOSE.
someoldguy
the will and do sell the “competitive ” team.. and as long as people pay fr that , that’s what they will get.
fba0017
Something was just off with Kimbrel last year. Where years past was automatic. Control issues maybe a little off velocity. Not trusted in playoffs.
mj-2
Kimbrel has always gone through wild streaks with his command. Even in Atlanta he would have them.
Difference was this time his wild streak happened at a poor time in the playoffs
When they happened in Atlanta where he’d start walking any and everybody he minimized the damage because he wasn’t facing playoff teams for the month his command struggled.
So really Kimbrel isn’t any different. But just know he does have those wild spells and hope it’s not in the playoffs against playoff teams who are more likely to expose it.
Had his command slipped in August instead of October no one would be talking about this or worried about his effectiveness, guaranteed.
He’s a HOF closer who picked a bad time to have a bad stretch, that’s all there is to it.
sawxfan82
He still had a 42 saves but yes he seemed to lose control of his fastball which screwed up his secondary pitches. He seemed to lose focus at points and it hurt him for sure. Every reliever goes through it.
qualla
Agree. Bombed when it counted. Too much for what the Twins need. Bigger issues.
crazywarrior
Lord I thought Madson was a Madison misprint.
Thank the Gods
Marytown1
Grandal also cited that having two young kids at home with MKE playing ST in Phoenix allowed him to be home for 2 more months as the Twins are in Ft Myers. As a Brewer fan I know the pain of not being able to get top talent. The 1 year deal with a short dish in right field should inflate his slugging numbers come next offseason. 3/50-60 should not be out of reach next year for him.
kripes-brewers
Brewers are in a really cool spot right now with a lot of positive energy. Loads of talent, balance of young kids coming up with polished vets, and it’s so much fun to watch them work together. It’s an exciting time to be a Brewer fan. I’m just anxious to see what happens with the pitching. So many unknowns and it feels like they are experimenting on this pitching rotation idea.
refereemn77
@Marytown Great point. A lot of Twins fans (and other mid-market team fans) often forget how hard it is to get FA to even consider the upper Midwest.
impactrookies
I think Grandal offers EXACTLY what the twins analytics look for in a catcher. Exceptional pitch framing, pristine defense and a bat that contributes to their offense. It’s no wonder they veiwed him in such high regard.
someoldguy
except they weren’t willing to pay for it..
refereemn77
$15MM per year seems fair. Grandal was pretty clear that he was only looking for the highest AAV offer he could get. That Mets offer was good too
systemofalansdowne
kimbrel better hope teams are waiting for spring training to sign him or he better lower his price. He was tuff to watch in the playoffs and the world series. With his asking price and a pick being tied to him seems like an high cost to pay.
DarkSide830
honestly if Harper/Manny arent getting as much money as was expected, im perfectly fine with the Phils spending a bit of “stupid money” for kimbrel.
DarkSide830
hey twins fans, lighten up. just because a guy is connected to your team doesnt make it less likely they sign then you win the lottery.
johnrealtime
I really don’t think that a small payroll team like the Twins would benefit from such a high priced closer
oneil435
Why not make an effort in signing him? Have the need for a game saving, proven closer, how many leads or games did we lose because of poor performances in the 8th and 9th inning? A LOT! Have the payroll flexibility for years to come. Whats the worse thing to happen? Sano, Buxton, Schoop don’t improve? Sell Kimbrel at the deadline for more prospects, always a buyer in need of a closer at playoff time. Right now, not signing him effects the overall of the team and the fans. Owners are set to gain more profit right now, a profit that they won’t use in the future years to come.
But who am I kidding? Why should I get my hopes up?
someoldguy
Jim Pohlad said straight out that they do not bank money for the future of the team. Its now or never. Like you said the best would be spending on trade-able assets.
Rich Hill’s Elbow
Maybe the Twins are saving money for a shot at both Grandal and Arenado next offseason…
martras
Rotation
Berrios, Gibson, Pineda, Odorizzi, Perez.
Bullpen
Reed, May, Rogers, Parker, Hildenberger
That leaves 3 spots for bullpen arms and the following players are out of options.
Duffey, Stewart, Mejia, J. Reed,
The following players already have their options clocks start running:
Thorpe, Littell, Moya, Romero, Gonsalves, Vasquez,
These players have been lost / are expected to be lost this year:
Drake, Busenitz, Curtiss, De Jong, Anderson, Slegers
Normally, organizations tend to fill bullpens from minor league prospects, but for the last year or so, the Twins have been absolutely hemorrhaging potential bullpen and back end starter arms due to roster limits and their propensity to sign so many redundant low end talent arms rather than figuring out what they already have.
If the Twins signed Kimbrel, it would mean losing Duffey, but I doubt the Twins are too concerned about it.
someoldguy
its a word game.. all they are doing is claiming they want; when it gets down to the brass tacks they aren’t willing to pay for top quality.. they are bargain basement hunters hoping something works with lesser talents.
someoldguy
we built them a stadium and they were supposed to use the money to build a winner. Needless to say they are more interested in maintaining the happiness of the owner than the fans who footed the bill.
Illusionist
yeah 15 to about 20 mil on a closer, pfft. Twins are better off using that towards RP or SP in order to even get into save situations in the first place. If you had the the right SP, RP and Hitters, then MAYBE go for it if you could even afford it. In terms of your ideal contract Kimbrel, or your agent who is telling you to get that contract, its probably a bit too much out of line.
oneil435
I agree with you completely, and I understand the route they are taking. My view is this:
Say they sign Kimbrel 17+M/Year or whatever
Who Benefits?
-Players- Team Performance
-Fans/Attendance/TV Viewership
—More dollars coming in
– Closer to meaningful baseball in Sept.
Doesn’t Benefit
Owners- More Payroll
Dont Sign Kimbrel
– Not as competitive team
-Less Attendance, Upset Fanbase etc
– Owner has more profit
– Better draft pick that might be able to help 4+ years from now
stymeedone
@oneill
How does less attendance and upset fan base equal MORE profit? Income goes down, profits go down. Where did you take your business classes?
refereemn77
Eh. As we’ve seen with other teams, ticket sales are only a portion of revenue.
Illusionist
Yea I understand. In fact, you may be right. But unfortunately, the way I’ll put it is this: It’s doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. Mabye they make more money in the long run, but I doubt it (if they do props to them. In the long run, small market teams trying to make it to playoffs need solid SP and hitting, CP is secondary for them, especially when its at a cost of 15-18 mil. yearly.
Even if it does make more money in the long run, sometimes the player is undeserving of it; we like to think every person is equal and you’re right, but I would argue differently for player roles; e.g. SP always pitches more innings than a closer, or Hitter playing everyday compared to a CP, its just the way the role works, Also we often see these ridiculous huge contracts here player has a few good years then rest of career turns below average to poor. Examples are veterans near the end of their contract, I still remember Audrey Hufff for example batting about .190 towards end of season and getting paid like 20 mil for it that year. Or when players just have 1 good year and their salaries boost up.Tell you what. Why dont they man up and say their undeserving of that money when they dont perform well? Just like you take incentives and bonuses when you do well, which I can accept, why don’t you take pay cuts when you do bad? So you won’t be getting that 15-20 mil when uve just batted in the low .200’s. Just truly pathetic and hypocritical on their part.
SomeTwinsfan
Why sign Kimbrel for big money? I say use Romero as a multi inning closer. I would focus that kind of money on starting pitching. Make a serious run at Keuchel.
Cardinals17
Bud Norris did a fine job closing for the Cardinals. Although he faded in the stretch because of over use, I can’t understand why someone hasn’t picked him up yet. He was great early.
whatyouknowtwinsfan
Twins are in a weird spot. They have a top-10 (possibly top 5) farm system, they have money to spend, and a mlb core that needs to take the next step. I get the frustration of fans because I agree, they should spend the money. Guys like Keuchel and Kimbrel would improve the team greatly. That being said, I also get the idea of waiting. Buxton and Sano need to prove themselves for a full season. If they win, you can make trades in July using your loaded farm system and make investments in the deep amount of pitching available next offseason.
