The Mariners have reached agreement on a minor-league deal with ageless outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). It would pay him at a $750K rate in the majors.
While the contract may come as a surprise to some, it has long been something of an inevitability. When the legendary former star wrapped up his most recent stint with the M’s last May, the sides made clear that the arrangement — in which Ichiro traveled and trained with the big league club but did not suit up for games — would not preclude a return to action in the future. Since that time, Ichiro has prepared to play in 2019, with the club indicating it would give him an opportunity in camp.
At this point, it’s a risk-free move for the Seattle team. Indications are that Ichiro will at least be utilized to open the season, as the M’s are slated to kick things off with a two-game series in his native Japan in which the team will be able to carry a 28-man roster. Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess whether Ichiro has a real shot at sticking on the active roster, but it certainly seems at least possible he’ll do so in what has already been declared something of a transition year for the club.
Needless to say, it’s an unusual situation. Then again, few if any players have combined Ichiro’s (metaphorically) towering stature with his unending drive to play the game. For a Seattle team that has failed to reach its goals over the past few seasons (and then some), there’s obviously an opportunity here to continue to benefit from a uniquely great player. There’s also still no shortage of potentially tricky terrain to navigate.
This is awesome! Stick around forever Ichiro!
I think Ichiro could become another unanimous selection for the HoF when it becomes his time. He was as humble a player as I’ve ever seen but did nothing but perform at an absolute high standard in his prime. Think about it? He did in 1/2 to 2/3 the time of many other players after coming over from Japan. He was simply a great teammate and player
Theres a reason why the Mariners haven’t made the playoff for almost TWO DECADES. That reason is bad decisions. Just saying.
At this point he wont enter the hall of fame until he’s 60. In all seriousness, itd be cool to see him in the majors next year
eh, it’ll always be a matter of time.
The man had a 33 OPS+ with the Mariners last year. Really, no it wouldn’t be cool.
Ichiro Suzuki and Dirk Nowitzski, hello, and greet each other. Now, smell the coffee.
Hello, maybe another team in a rebuild thinks signing Bartolo Colon would be a fan draw, too.
Say goodbye Ich, the only thing you have to offer is novelty.
Almost like player/coach/mentor now and his discipline and work ethic are still supreme elite. We think rebuilding team needs guys like this on the field
And great marketing
The ageless one. Congrats
I hope he gets a chance to play in April as well. Didn’t work out last year too much, but if we’re stepping back in 2019 I would mind watching ichiro play some baseball.
Bottom line is would fans want to attend to see him, some MLB retread or an unknown minor leagues? He’ll sell enough shirts to pay for himself. The visit to Japan will be amazing to watch.
I can speak for that as I am a Seattle fan. Hell yeah I’d go watch games. Him playing while we take a step back to rebuild gives him a shot, and gives us something to look forward to.
The George Blanda of MLB!! Go Ichiro!
Funny thing about Blanda, is he was technically a backup QB for the raiders while in his 50’s also, along with being the place kicker on those teams. so many years back.. i don ‘t remember if he took any snaps being so old, tho he was decent in his younger years.
Have to add this.. As for age and greatness? How can anyone leave out the great Gordie Howe in Hockey. he played well into his 50’s, even with his son a few years. What was his nickname? golden Elbows for his ferocious hits when he was younger?
Though I’ll always remember him as Woodrow!
If only there was some kind of interconnected computer network where you could look things up and find out.
pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BlanGe00.htm
With the HOF angle, maybe. But for age Julio Franco still has Ichiro beat.
Franco was amazing. Both were/are lean and in great shape. Franco basically pinch hit and occasionally played first towards the end. To see Ichiro make a leaping catch in left last year was beautiful to watch.
Didn’t Satchel Paige play at 59?
Minnie Miñoso has Franco beat. As does Satch.
Careful bro, you’re dating yourself!
Yeah Baby! Ichiro *may be back! Like it said, at least give him a spring training spot, hopefully a crack at the majors when they play in japan.
He should end his career as a mariner and I’m lad he is getting to do so
He already plated with the Mariners last year, so whether he retired yesterday, today, or after the games in Japan, he’d be retiring a Mariner. When he’s elected to the Hall, he’ll go in as a Mariner. This move doesn’t really change anything regarding how he retires.
It’s all about letting him play in Japan for them for this unique opportunity. Great move for the fans more than anything.
Curious though, will the opposing pitcher give him a few meatballs to make sure the crowd has something to cheer for?
Ichiro doesn’t need meatballs, only Jeter.
haha, good one, ohyeadam
Need or not, will someone give him one? Hence why i used the term “to make sure.”
But in seriousness as good as he WAS, he’ll be 45, and he was just a .255 hitter in his last full season, and some pitcher might do it for fun, so the crowd can see a big home run from their star.
I hope they dont
Hard to see a pitcher throwing a game just to see the opposing team’s fans cheer.
Classy player loved him on the Yankees
the only error or whiff he made in 28 years
Dipoto will probably trade him for Pujols
Add in the Josh Hamilton contract to make it fair.
Crap! NOW THEY WON’T GET HARPER!!!!!!111
lmao jjb
No way. Harper used to look up to Ichiro As a youngster. His Aunt’s sister’s brothers’s barber was quotes saying Harper would go if his old idol played right.
right on 7 year Ichiro
I thought he was retired and went into the front office last year.
The plan has been to let him finish out his career in front of his countrymen. Seattle opens up in Japan this year. This is going to be a huge PR move for the Seattle office and Japanese imports for the future. This has been the plan for over a year. I’m really looking forward to watching him play in Japan.
Yes but Ichiro has been keeping in shape knowing that he might sneak his way past those few games if he looks good during spring training.
Dude is like Nolan Ryan, Tommy John and Bartolo Colon. Even HE doesn’t know how old he really is, just keeps on playing.
Ichiro is nothing like that multiple cheater “Colon”! WTF
Yeah he’s exactly like a pitcher
Ichiro reminds me of a reconstructive surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament.
Haters gonna hate! [Thumbs up]!
So out of curiosity and not to kill nostalgia….. how can the league get away with a 28 man roster? Where is it authorized to be anything but 25 before sept…..why aren’t we at 28 all the time?
Great question!
it’s a special roster exception due to the teams playing their games in Japan. kind of hard to call someone up from the minors to fill innings if you end up having an 18 inning affair on opening day.
I understand this, but shouldn’t the solution be to carry 28 men with you, but set your 25-man roster before each game played overseas?
Those 3 extra players would be on what roster then? Why punish the minor league roster by having 3 people from their roster in another country?
The minor league season starts a week later than the major-league season. So no AAA teams will be harmed by having a few of their players in Japan
I believe they’re allowed to carry 28 for international games, since roster moves are much more difficult.
It’s just because of travel. It goes back to 25 once we reach the states.
Figure 3 of the 28 to have severe jet lag,
But what I’m wondering as a baseball geek, is whether the three extra players all burn an option when sent back down after the Japan games are over? Or can they be sent back down without being optioned/run through waivers?
It’s been that way when teams make overseas trips before. probably will be for the UK trip also Boston-NYY, if it’s still on.
Speaking of Hall of Famers… For those who haven’t read much about Ichiro the human being beyond the baseball player I encourage you to do so. Some great stories and I was surprised what a great sense of humor Ichiro has based on how they play out.
Great baseball player and great man. Our era’s Pete Rose without the gambling cloud over him. Can’t wait to see him in Cooperstown!
It seems they are very far apart when it comes their character.
Idiots
well that’s a considerate comment you got there.
Mariners won’t contend, might as well keep him on the team full time until they do. Let him retire in 10 years.
He won’t be on the big league roster beyond the Japan trip, barring injury, but at least he gets to go out in his home country.
let’s face it, M’s probably (not being a hater) aren’t contending this year, might as well have a feel good story, kind of like Jr. had.
Ich-I-Ro!!!
Go go go go Ichiro
Since 2011, Ichiro has .650 OPS with barely replacement level defense. That’s the year he stopped being a useful presence on a major league roster. He’s been a signing meant to sell tickets and merch instead of helping to win games everywhere he played in the last seven years.
So, with all due respect for his achievements, his presence on the field is hurting the end product…at least for those of us who go to a game to see competition and performance, rather than a parade of celebrity athletes. If the Mariners don’t feel like spending money, just get the best guy from triple A in there. He’s gonna do better than a 45 year old.
He bounced back well in 2012 and was a useful bench piece in some of the other years after that. You’re exaggerating
You don’t understand baseball.
He had a great 2016 considering he was a bench guy. He might just need Bonds to be his hitting coach again.
He had a great first half in 2016. He batted .245 with .291 OBP after the ASB.
He did have a great 2016 when Bonds was his hitting coach despite being in his 40s.
I hope Ichiro has a good spring training and gives the Mariner fans a good reason to see him still in the majors because I’d love to see him play until he’s 50.
Whether or not he can still excel in the biggs, his value to M’s is far greater as ambassador, scout, instructor, liaison in Japan.
On a selfish note, I’d like to see him play ‘til his Methuselah years.
I love Ichiro more than anything, but I can’t watch him play for longer than this Japan series. Yes, I know “transition” but watching a player past his prime failing hurts, and is not fun to watch. Also, Domingo Santana needs at bats. But, I’m very glad he’s on the Japan roster.
Who retires first? Ichiro or Bartolo?
It’s neck and thick neck.
Clean vs DIRTY!
Age is so overrated…
One of my favorite all-time players. I remember his first season and my seeing him play for the first time . He threw out Terrence Long of the A’s by a mile at 3rd base with a throw that can only be described as military grade weaponry. He was a game changer in every aspect. Very few players in the history of the game played RF like that. I believe he’s collected around 4500 hits in his career between Japan and the US. Thanks for the memories Ichiro!
He threw something out of Star Wars.
Unless it was from the dark side they cant aim their blasters worth crap! Lol
If only he signed with the A’s so many years ago. He’d know what it’s like to be in the playoffs and be a part of a real baseball town.
A real baseball town? You misspelled St. Louis.
LOL
Since 1995, Oakland has had a better season attendance over the Mariners ONE time. So yeah…real baseball town.
What other team has been to the World Series three years in a row on two separate occasions?
That was the last century
He could watch the Yankees beat the As non stop from his own couch instead of the dugout steps I suppose.
As a Bay Area native, I can indeed confirm that Oakland is not a “real baseball town.” To be sure, there is definitely a rabid group of dedicated A’s fans here, but by and large, football is much more regarded, and most of the Bay Area goes Giants.
There is still a good fan base for the A’s across California. Obviously though the giants and dodgers still reign supreme.
Great article written last spring about Ichiros obsession/addiction to baseball. espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/22624561/ichiro-s…
… great article – thanks for the link.
Julio Franco hung around until he was 49 (though there are many Cleveland fans who insist he exaggerated/understated his age when coming over from Philly in a trade and was actually 53 in his final season in 2007). I say Ichiro should make it a goal to beat that. 5 more years in an M’s uniform. Why not?
How many hits does Ichiro have in MLB. How many including his Japan days?
too many to count
3,089 in MLB, 1,278 in Japan, 4,367 total. Move over Pete Rose..
Baseball in Japan is like A ball in the states lol.
No, most talent evaluators would call Japanese baseball equivalent to a theoretical AAAA team in the states; somewhere between the majors and AAA. Suzuki’s remarkable career basically contradicts your snarky assertion; a single-A player would not have succeeded in MLB the way Ichiro did.
They signed him for their japanese fans and to give a friend to that newly signed pitcher from japan
The Mariners are an uninteresting team.
I guess Ichiro gets to live another year instead of dying
“Satchel” Suzuki.
One of the most overrated players of all time.
You are wrong, fella
If a cannon arm, 3000 hits, 500 steals, and a ROY and MVP in the same season is overrated, then give me 8 Ichiros on my team. The guy could have hit 20+ HR every year if he wanted to, but he sacrificed power for avg and OBP. Every player and coach that was with him said he would stand there in batting practice and knock ball after ball over the fence when he wanted to.
I remember the Mariners selling “ichirolls” his rookie year. good times
Classy move on both ends of this idea – good to see. Would love to be present when Ichiro takes the field in Japan.
Within the next 3-4 years he’s named manager of the mariners becoming the first Japanese born manager in mlb history. Servias moves to front office.
Who else wants to see Ichiro hit over .300 for a full season again and make the playoffs this year?
Ichiro is embarrassing himself and tarnishing his legend. The last 6 seasons he’s produced an OPS of .639, .634, .561, .730, .649 and .460.. Hang up the cleats.
Julio Franco played until he was 48, in the United States, and 57, in Japan. That Rod Stewart “Forever Young” song comes to mind. I think it’s great. Play as long as you want. When you love something, it’s hard to walk away.
It’s a sentimental move, but if Ichiro can’t produce the M’s should let him go…and the signs so far are indicating that Ichiro can’t produce anymore.
still nothing on macho camacho or harper? we’re talking about a 45 y/o minor league contract. lol
Kikuchi and Ichiro in Japan opening day it’s a fantastic symbol gesture the the Ms are willing to do to honor a fan base and a player
