Mariners Designate Max Povse

By Connor Byrne | January 27, 2019 at 6:02pm CDT

The Mariners announced that they’ve designated right-hander Max Povse for assignment. Povse’s 40-man spot will go to fellow righty Hunter Strickland, whose signing is now official.

Now 25, Povse has been with the Mariners since they acquired him in a 2016 trade with the Braves that also involved Alex Jackson and Robert Whalen. Thus far, Povse has totaled a meager 3 2/3 innings in Seattle, all of which came in his first season with the club. While Povse posted solid Double-A numbers that year, when he logged a 3.41 ERA with 8.9K/9 and 2.82 BB/9 in 60 2/3 innings and 10 starts, he hasn’t been nearly as successful in Triple-A.

Over the past two seasons at the minors’ highest level, Povse recorded a horrendous 8.17 ERA with 9.7 K/9 and 5.3 BB/9 in 68 1/3 innings and 21 appearances (13 starts). Povse does possess a mid-90s fastball and one more minor league option, though, so perhaps another organization will take a chance on him.

There will be a lot more of swapping out the spare parts in the DiPoto jalopy before spring training even gets going.

Hoping for the DBacks to claim him. He’d be a really nice depth piece with the question marks at the back of the rotation

Wouldn’t mind the braves grabbing him and seeing if they can bring back some of that success. He’d have to figure it out in the minors again, but he’s worth the shot

Can’t believe he lasted this long. He’s not good.

He is/was the M’s 6th or 7th best SP prospect, which really speaks to the lack of SP prospect depth in their system. They’ve done a lot to add high end talent at the top of their farm, but the depth just isn’t there. They’re really counting on the development of guys like Sheff, Dunn, and Kelenic.

Well yeah, that was the whole point of the “reimagining” this offseason. We had the worst farm system in the majors.

Max Povse was Seattle’s 13th-ranked pitching prospect, and 25th-ranked prospect overall, at MLB Prospect Watch:

Yeah that’s why I specified starting pitching prospects… there are a few relievers ahead of him that I wasn’t counting… also povse Whalen and Sanchez are pretty much interchangeable since they are ranked very close together. Only 5 starters who are clearly better than him in their system

Surprised they didn’t DFA Negron instead since he’s basically 33 and has proven absolutely nothing at the big league level…

Don’t understand Povse DFA’d over others. Hoping he clears waivers. Liked what i saw when he was in Atlanta’s system

Blue Jays could use him in AAA.
