The Phillies announced today that former infielder Jimmy Rollins has joined the organization as a special advisor. He’ll return to the team that drafted him back in 1996 and with which he spent 15 of his 17 seasons in the majors.
Rollins, 40, has not formally announced an end to his playing career, though it had long seemed clear that he had hung up his spikes. He last played in 2016 and was already slated to participate in a retirement ceremony with the Philadelphia organization during the upcoming season.
Whether Rollins will ultimately launch a full-blown post-playing career in the game isn’t yet clear. For now, he’ll get started with a fairly typical slate of potential activities for a respected former star. Per the club, he will engaged in “spring training coaching, meeting with sponsors and suite holders, fan engagement and community outreach,” among other possible functions.
Best news of the day! Welcome home Jimmy.
Wow, he was drafted in 2016 and played 17 seasons in the MLB? Very impressive!
Love you guys at MLBTR!
Drafted in 16 and played last game in 16 and played 17 seasons. Mustve borrowed the delorean.
Wait what year are we in?
WHAT YEAR IS IT!?!?
Drafted in 2016?
Umm, I think that you mean 1996.
Isn’t it time for a update on the Reds inching closer to acquiring a catcher from the Marlins??
It has been 3 hours.
I laughed harder at this than I should’ve.
big lol
Phillies spending some of that money.
I liked him a lot in his day. Could run. Could hit for power. Could play SS pretty smoothly. Just an all around good player.
Who needs Bryce, we have Jimmy!
Do you guys think he gets in to the hall of fame?
no, his offensive numbers aren’t good enough.
If Baines get in the HOF, then Rollins can too. Otherwise, his numbers are a little short.
Larkin: 2180 GP, 1329 R, 2340 H, 198 HR, 960 RBI, 379 SB
Rollins: 2275 GP, 1421 R, 2455 H, 231 HR, 936 RBI, 470 SB
The counting stats may say that but they dont factor in the era. Larkin won 8 more silver sluggers than jimmy rollins, indicating that he was the predominant offensive shortstop in his league far more often than Rollins. He also has 12 all star nods to Rollins’ 3, showing that he was clearly considered a top shortstop all of those years. His numbers play big against his peers, even if they dont play up against a guy from a much different time period.
No.
Nope.
eh, he’ll no doubt get his share of votes, and probably more then most people here think.
Could be a one and done or possibly hang on the ballot a couple years. Hall of very good.
Just another stupid ass reporter trying to fill a page.
Huh?
Referring to your proctologist?
C’mon DonC…..don’t leave it at that tough guy. We are all waiting to bask in the glory of your wisdom. Tell us more. /s
What is Rollins connection with Harper or Manny?
everyone flipped out at both Manny and Rollins after the failed to run the bases (the latter unjustly, id argue, due to his age)
Was this the 1pm press conference that people started saying was gonna be Bryce Harper signing with Phillies?
Amazingly some were duped by a fake “reporter” Twitter account that has since been banned. Others seemed to think his signing would be announced by MLB The Show and not the team and player….smh. Then there were those who believed the announcement that all Vegas Sports Book FA prop bets regarding Harper were pulled down. That’s amazing because Vegas Sports Books don’t post free agent prop bets. Some people are so eager to believe.
When did you figure it out?
I thought there was smoke given the commotion, but I never saw sign of a fire.
