The Cubs have agreed to a minors deal with righty Rob Scahill, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter). It is not yet known whether Scahill will receive a spring invite, though it stands to reason that he would.
Scahill, who’ll turn 32 right as camp opens, has appeared in each of the past seven MLB seasons, though he has yet to tally 35 frames in a given campaign. All told, the reliever owns a 3.85 ERA through 149 2/3 innings. He has managed just 6.0 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 in that stretch, but does carry a healthy 55.0% groundball rate.
For most of the 2018 season, Scahill pitched for the White Sox’ top affiliate. Though he only provided Charlotte with a 5.64 ERA, Scahill did post an uncharacteristically robust tally of 10.5 strikeouts per nine.
Barring injury, the odds seem long for Scahill to crack the Opening Day roster for the Cubs. Still, he could be a worthwhile depth piece for the Chicago organization and will enter Spring Training with at least a fighting chance at staking a claim to big league pen job.

There’s the big acquisition Cubs fans have been hoping for.
Knowthemarket
LOL! I was pretty sure this threads first post would be this joke.=)
Brace yourself for all the downvotes! >=}

I find it funny that they’re dumpster diving old Brewers rejects. Us brewer fans have had to endure the Cub trolls for a long time. Can’t help but poke back a little.
ortsacnilrats
As a Cubs fan who has lived in WI for the last 20 years the feeling is mutual. There are only a handful of Brewer fans I know that actually follow them year in and out regardless and I’m sure you can say the same for Cubs fans. Point being, you’re always going to “hate” fans from the other side. Wish we could all just go back to hating on the Cards 🙂
BrewCrew1302
Cubs deserve it after some of the awful contracts they handed out. Heyward and Darvish are the reasons Harper is not/will never be a Cub. Nice job Theo
Knowthemarket
Meh..don’t really have a horse in this race, though I do like the Brewers. They’re an easy sympathetic favorite.
megaj
Brewpoo- When you phrase it like that, I guess Theo did them a favor by blocking the horrible contract Harper would have received.
troykrider
Yeah Theo is really bringing down the Cubs with that World Series Championship lol
rondon
At least if you’re gonna hate, come up with a point other than the one on top of your head.
twentyforty
Coming from a group of fans that still believe Jimmy Nelson will pitch meaningful MLB innings again. Hint….he’s not.
gregstruth89
Coming from a team that believes yu darvish will ever live up to his contract

Hint…Darvish is done

BOOM! Theo isn’t messing around anymore.

I’d rather have the scrap heap acquisition be for the AAA team than my starting 2B in the majors….
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
Yeah and the brewers big signing was corey spangenberg.

Didn’t they sign another IFer? Granddoll or something like that?

When you’re about to win 90+ games…AGAIN…you don’t need much.
chitown311
How’d those 90+ wins go last year?
2id
Even if you get to 90 wins, you’ll still be looking up at the Brewers and probably the Cards too.
walls17
There you go cubs fans. Sleep easy not

Dumpster Divin’ Theo!

Just in time for the Cubs’ convention!

They promise a big announcement this weekend, surprised they let it out so soon.

I hope they don’t get the great legendary Olver Drake.

never speak his name again. Stearns might hear you.

Clearly this move makes them front runners to de-throne the reigning NL Central champs, the Milwaukee Brewers

This site is as its most hilarious when teams make minor league signing. Hilariously sad how everyone rehashes the same tired and misguided jokes. How many times do minor league signings end up being very beneficial to a team? Very often in the MLB, especially with relievers.
I feel like I’m sitting at an American Legion when I see how unoriginal and lacking in critical the jokes are around here.
I wouldn’t bet on this guy being a difference maker but it seems like a solid depth signing imo
walterfranciswhite
This is what they’ll look back on when they’re on their deathbeds. Made nothing of their pathetic lives, but at least they trolled and sat in a circle amongst like minded losers
chitown311
Not at all I think this is exactly what the Cubs and their fans needed! A shot in the arm if you will. Great signing Theo. I’ve always been a fan of Robert S. Cahill
johnrealtime
I’m curious what moves you think the Cubs should have done this offseason. They are not in a very good payroll situation currently (meaning how much Ricketts is allowing into the budget). As far as minor league deals go, this seems like a pretty solid one. He seems like the kind of guy the Cubs turn into a serviceable arm
chitown311
How about they turn $300mm Darvish and Chatwood into serviceable arms before they worry about finding service from the scrap heap?
NotBill
Meh – we’re doing our best to make this offseason the least bit entertaining, while nothing happens except the hourly updates on what Manny and Bryce ate for lunch.
Also, this is hardly a ‘depth signing’.
johnrealtime
Minor league depth? Have to fill AAA rosters
johnrealtime
Wow my comment is filled with more mistakes than usual. *Critical thinking* is the most glaring one
NotBill
It’s fine – we know it’s hard to type when you’re so passionate about the Cubbies… the Lovable Losers, the Baby Bears, the Flubs…
johnrealtime
I’m just fairly busy and don’t prioritize proofreading when I am wasting time on the internet. While I love the Cubs, I feel I’m a pretty fair and less-biased-than-most sports fan
NotBill
I think you’re pretty fair and non-biased as well. Check out Grammarly – a free plugin that will fix anything you type… it’s awesome 🙂
Ejemp2006
You’re guy who always come to Legion Hall even though you are above, more sophisticated, then the others? But still always come?
johnrealtime
Lol no. I had an alcoholic father who was a commander for quite awhile and I spent a decent amount of my early childhood around the legion, as well as random times throughout my life. I said American Legion just to make it very specific but you could say the same about most bars frequented by day drinking drunks. I have a beer or two a month (not at a bar) but I got to witness the cautionary tale closeup. I’m no better or worse than the lot of them but Jesus they are boring to be around

Must be a slow sports day Why bother
NotBill
This whole offseason has been a slow sports day…
ChiSoxCity
Big news will only be coming from the Southsiders from now on. Get used to it.
johnrealtime
That’s likely true for this offseason at least. Being 3 years into a rebuild, I would hope that they had shed their contracts or they had elapsed on their own. I think the Sox may be quite a good team in 2020
jdgoat
I don’t think any fan base suffers more from “little brother syndrome” more than the White Sox. Very, very odd.

Nah if anything I’d say the Mets are more in the head of Yankees fans. On this website at least.

Theo boy genius at it again!
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
Its only a minor league deal. Now they need one more signing pr trade to get bullpen help. Nearly every reliever is off the table. 40% of them signed with the Jankees
simschifan
You guys are all waiting for a huge signing like Harper or Kimbrel so then you can just crap on that one. Must be a wonderful life you guys live when all you do is sit there and bash a team cause your team sucks. Not sure who you guys all like but I’m not seeing a lot of Red Sox fans saying anything. Cause they win and their fans are intelligent and for the most part good sports. Just like the football team they have in that area, ya know the greatest football team any of us have ever seen the New England Patriots. Let’s go Pats
chitown311

This guy might surprise you. Don’t criticize him too much because he’s not the big signing you were hoping for. I hope he succeeds. In case nobody is watching, Theo is quietly building the minors again. Let’s see what else happens in the next three weeks.
Moneyballer
ChiSoxCity
“Theo is quietly building the minors again.” LOL! With what, retreads? You cannot seriously believe that bs.
NotBill
“Theo is quietly building the minors”…
With a guy “who’ll turn 32 right as camp opens, has appeared in each of the past seven MLB seasons, though he has yet to tally 35 frames in a given campaign.”
Yep – he’ll be right there for opening day with all the other promising prospects in 2022.
Moneyballer
This signing is nonsense! I saw him pitch at the end of the season, walked nearly every batter he faced then drilled a guy right in the head. Nonsense signing.
mistry gm
If you are so bored then lets start our own poll. which teams will Epstein and Maddon join after this season or will they stay with the Cubs?
NotBill
Epstein to the Indians, Maddon will retire.
megaj
Maddon gone after this season if no WS. They were ready this season to axe him, but most likely will offer the job to Girardi next season. A lot of people love Maddon, but I can’t stand his approach. No fundamental practices, no small ball, no meetings, pajama parties, constant lineup changes, whatever. He is like the dad who would rather be the child’s friend instead of being a parent and disciplining the kids. Problem is it winds up hurting those kids/players in the long run. I think guys like Happ and Schwarber would have benefited much more in a different system..
Moneyballer
Yeah he kinda thinks he’s too cool for school and gets in his own way, far too often.
Dad
As a Cards fan , I Look at the entire central ( except the reds who are dangerous) and in my 50 years of watching baseball have never seen the Central have this much talent. It’s going to be fun!
remember 108
I agree. NL Central will be very competitive and fun to watch.
megaj
Both the central and the NL east are going to be crazy competitive this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rockies, Dodgers, and Pads all make it close in the West as well. Gonna be a great season!
2id
Thank you for being objective. Been a lifelong Brewers fan. Even had season tickets during the lost years of the 90’s. I too think it’s great when there are talent laden teams throughout the division. Every game is important, even the games in April and May.
