The on-again, off-again chatter surrounding the Braves and Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto has left an uncertain situation. While the Atlanta organization already seems to have a palatable situation behind the dish, with Brian McCann rejoining the org to pair with Tyler Flowers, it’s also one that is susceptible of improvement. In any event, the stalemate seemingly continues, though Craig Mish of MLB Network does tweet that the teams have been in contact of late regarding Realmuto. It’s far from clear that any progress has been made, though, as he says the Braves “appear to be waiting [the] Marlins out.” The Rays also “remain a possibility,” says Mish, though at this point it’s really anyone’s guess how things will turn out with regard to Realmuto, who’s a valuable enough asset that any number of other teams could conceivably still enter the picture or circle back if other offseason pursuits don’t pan out.
Some more notes on the trade and free-agent markets…
- The Bryce Harper and Manny Machado sagas are holding up the markets for many remaining free agents, even left-hander Dallas Keuchel, per MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal (video link). Rosenthal suggested on MLBN’s Hot Stove this morning that Keuchel is waiting to see where the market’s top two free agents land, presumably knowing that a suitor who misses out on Harper or Machado will have money to spend elsewhere. The Phillies, for instance, have been connected to all three players, so it’s not all that difficult to see them making a more serious run at Keuchel should their top two targets sign elsewhere.
- Another would-be blockbuster situation that may now be fizzling is the Indians’ oft-discussed negotiations on top starters Corey Kluber and Trevor Bauer. Paul Hoynes of the Plain Dealer discusses the situation, suggesting it may be time for the Cleveland organization to ask for final offers and otherwise move on from the marketing process. Of course, it’s far from clear that the team is taking that stance. And as Hoynes goes on to discuss, it’s also still not apparent how (or even if) the Indians will go about improving a roster that looks quite a bit different than it did just a few months ago. It’s still possible that Cleveland could add an outfielder from the free-agent market, but there’s no indication that they’re in line to make a significant splash on that front.
- Meanwhile, talks between the Braves and the Tigers regarding outfielder Nicholas Castellanos have gone nowhere since the two sides talked at last month’s Winter Meetings, Morosi tweets. The Braves are, of course, still looking far and wide for a corner outfielder and are “active” in their pursuit of that key need. With many options seemingly still on the table, though, the club appears to be content not to push hard for any particular player, which might increase the acquisition cost.
- Veteran southpaw Robbie Ross is preparing to throw for scouts in mid-January as he looks for a new opportunity, MLBTR has learned. Ross spent time with the White Sox organization in 2018, but struggled with his command as he worked back to health following back surgery in August of 2017. He’s now said to be at full strength, though he’ll certainly need to show that to the talent evaluators who take a look. The 29-year-old has generally been quite effective as a big-league reliever, with a 3.52 ERA in 270 2/3 career innings in that capacity.

His postcast sucks- no clue, the game has passed him by.

I don’t see how Harper and Machado are holding up the market for other free agents. Most teams are not in on either,
manos
Not to mention what they both get will not affect Keuchel’s deal in any way. They’re positional players and he’s a pitcher. Most of these articles are just nonsense.
timw3558
Except for the nationals who seem to be on both Harper and Keuchel
a-a-a-astros
The way it works is money not position. If a team pays Harper or Machado they don’t have the money for Kuechel.
slider32
Not stupid money!
shortytallz
The money you give a P and a position player is not uncorrelated.
petrie000
Because if a fairly rich team with money to spend misses out on either, it potentially makes a big impact on the players left.
If you’re one of the those players angling for a big deal, that could suddenly give you considerably more suitors and therefore leverage.
jett
Well, guys on the market will use market numbers from guys who have signed. For someone like AJ Pollock, he and his agent would rather work off the value Harper earns per year as opposed to someone more his ilk (McCutchen). The mid-tier free agents always try to use the top FA’s earnings to help them ballpark estimations.
For someone like Macahdo, he does hold up the market because teams are waiting to see what happens. Machado as a SS/3B has impact on both the free agents and the trade market. NYY can use him at SS or 3B but at 3B, that may facilitate an Andujar trade (which would involve a number of teams most likely), Moustakas is viewed as the fallback option for PHI and maybe CWS provided they do not sign Machado. If they do or don’t, the Phillies have a 3B in Maikel Franco who would be on the trade market and would garner interest. Plus there’s guys out there like Marwin Gonzalez, Jed Lowrie, etc. who are probably not first or second options for some teams who are waiting to see what happens with Macahdo before making a move.

I ain’t paying no fifty cents for no coke!, Well, you ain’t getting no coke then, you know what I mean!!
Who do Harper and Machdo think they are?

Why not call up the team he wants to play for and see what they can do?

Manny to the White Sox. His brother in law plays on that team.
Dallas Keuchel to sign with Texas Rangers… his best friend and college buddy Drew Smyly is on that team.

It’s a shame how the market has stagnated. While it’s frustrating to see that Machado & Harper are holding up the market, they served their 6 years of service time so it’s hard to begrudge their free agency. In the next CBA, they need to attack the weaknesses in the current system and get the winter time to be engaging for both serious and more casual baseball fans.
Since so many teams seem discouraged to approach the luxury tax threshold, it’s almost acts like a cap. If so, I think MLB & mainly the MLBPA need to enforce a salary floor. That can change year to year based on market & financials but every club should be required to spend $X on their big league roster.
The other change should be, the should institute an off-season trade deadline. If the league installed a deadline between the end of the winter meetings and the end of spring training where no trades can happen, it would send a surge of life into the market. Imagine how enticing the coverage would be? Baseball could find an interesting window to get eyes on the product. Early December is pre-NFL playoff time where the NBA & NHL are already 2 months into their seasons and college basketball has just only tipped off. The winter meetings could arguably become the biggest event of the baseball season for roster moves. Truncating the process would’ve meant that the J.T. Realmuto talk would’ve been taken care of by now (either through trade or lack there of), it would’ve put impetuous on teams to get deals done.
The issue is for guys even like Dallas Keuchel is that teams are more willing to sit out the market. And when you see the exchange rate in terms of dollars & production the Phils and Cubs received for Arrieta and Darvish respectively last season, teams are probably more stingy. The issue is, there’s always the chance for a trade now. Every Keuchel suitor can easily look at trading for someone like Bauer, Kluber, Stroman, etc.
I think as the market has changed and teams are seeing all the same information and for the most part, taking the same course of action when it comes to roster decision. The league would need to move the structures in place to make it enticing to spend on free agent talent. There’s no panacea for what’s infecting the winter market in baseball nowadays but it might be a helpful start?
petfoodfella
Ugh, no. Just no.
Topshelf Nick
They should move the draft in the offseason. I don’t know why its in the actual season, all other pro sports have them afterthe season is completed.
southi
Because the main amateur leagues of draftable players are over by the draft day (or almost so in the case of the CWS). The timing also gives a large percentage of the new draftees a chance to go ahead and start in professional baseball (similar to how other high school or college graduates start their own adult lives by entering the work force of their chosen profession).
The timing of the draft is fine. Please quit comparing baseball to other sports.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Part of the issue the MLB is dealing with is athletes choosing other sports. There are a ton of reasons why the MLB lags behind the NFL and NBA. Beyond the basic old stuffy mentality, A major reason that hasn’t been reconciled is the cost. The cost that is involved in travel ball, the showcase circuit etc… and the non head count status of college baseball. It’s a bit oversimplified, but man those are two major factors. If you have parents deciding to sway their kids into sports, it’s hard to basically argue between a full ride vs 25%. Attempting to move the draft to the offseason just puts another nail in the coffin of college baseball. Not only do you hamstring college rosters, but guys are already enrolled in classes. In fact, their fall season has basically wound down by the first/second week of November. You also only have 11.75 scholarships to work with no ability to really add at the semester unless you basically severely over-recruit which most ADs would probably deny regardless. That’s probably the worse idea. At least when you talk about the other drafts there is another recruiting class/time to fill rosters. That’s a great way to kill college baseball programs. The draft is perfectly fine and works for both athletes and college programs. Baseball is a different animal than the other sports.
bobtillman
JETT: Excellent points. I think the floor is almost a given at this point. with maybe a one-year exception for a team that finds itself in the kind of situation Baltimore does now.
And a trade deadline would fuel the FA market .Moreover, Dave Dombrowski suggested it; DD works for John Henry, one of the real de facto commissioners (it’s only fair; they contribute most to the sport’s “brand”, not to mention Revenue Sharing dollars).
The landscape has changed in MLB. Only the old folks think that player “A” will stay with his team forever. Instead, most fans EXPECT movement, and look forward to same. They could turn late December and January into a NFL-draft like atmosphere. Making one of the factors (trading) time-bound would only heighten the interest; i.e. “We didn’t trade for MadBum, better sign Kuechel”, etc.
I for one would celebrate both, especially the floor. Watching teams like the Reds and Rays (there are others) just suck up Revenue Sharing year after year and not spending on payroll is nauseating. And it’s beginning to really affect the sport. The AL “pennant race” is already over; only the second WC to be decided. That HAS to affect attendance, ratings, streaming, etc.
jett
The issue is teams don’t feel the pressure to make decisions anymore. The lack of a middle class of team is what led to the AL Central, with 3 of 5 either at or over 100 losses. Teams wouldn’t be in favor of this because it would cause teams to speed up their rebuilds but it would lead to more exciting winter action (at least through the end of the winter meetings at least). Let’s say MLB had these restrictions in place.
It would mean for catchers, that both Realmuto and Cervelli would have been traded or not. Once those moves are made, it makes it easier to gauge suitors for Grandal, Ramos (at the time), etc. more teams are willing to trade talent for talent than to sign talent. It’s no longer the bottom revenue teams looking to cut their books.
For the 3B/SS market, Machado would probably be signed by now. For some teams like the Yankees and Phillies (like I made the case for) are triple dipping in the market. They’re in on Machado (depending on whose reports you trust), they’re also possibly in on backup/second tier options (Moustakas, maybe Ma. Gonzalez/Lowrie/etc.), and they each have a 3rd baseman they would trade it they signed one of the above (Franco & Andujar). Not only would the trade deadline force the Phillies and Yankees to prioritize signing Machado quickly, it would put emphasis on them then trading their incumbent 3rd baseman before taking them to spring training and risking injury or damage to their stock via poor performance. While it would cripple the trade market in January and February, not many deals get done during this time anyway. With the change in business practices, the market needs to change but if teams control both the practices and market, then maybe it’s on the league to guide the market to encourage more spending across the league?
matt4baseball
I agree, Change in how baseball does business needs an extensive overhaul to save the sport. 1) They have to shorten the games from an average of 3 hrs. All our young family and friends hate the time wasted by every player, coach and umpire. Yes on time clocks, less video challenges, less commercials 2) The trade and free agency market has to have more finite beginnings and endings…All the players need to prepare for what teams they will play/prepare for…I suggest all trades begin December 1st and end February 15th. All free agents end January 15th. Start up again June 15th while keeping the July 31st Trade deadline. This will allow for fair business dealing by all, along with absolute trade deadlines to acquire the most sought after players. 3) keep revenue sharing with a minimum and max payroll rule for all teams to follow. 4) Arbitration moved up after the players rookie season, and a cap on Top salaries for the best players of about 40 mill per for the next 5 years. baseball has to change or die.
davidcoonce74
Are you a baseball owner or what? These are all ideas that would do nothing except throw more money onto the piles they are collecting already. A salary cap on individual players? Why? We don’t cap the profits of owners, do we? A hard FA deadline of January 15th? Yeah, guess what day teams will make their offers on. JHanuary 15th, and they’ll be low-ball offers for sure. Force a guy to choose sitting out a year or taking less money than he’s worth. The time of game issues are real but I don’t know if a pitch clock is the answer. Instant replay has been useful in pivotal games but it takes too long, for sure. But the other stuff – I’ve never understood why fans support billionair owners, who use taxpayer money to build their playgrounds, over the players so often in these issues.
matt4baseball
You are think foolishly if you don’t respect the owners and their profits. They paid 100’s of millions if not a billion for the club up front. When some teams offer them some 50 mill returns? However, you are correct that the players are what we watch the game for. i would like to see the minor league, rookies and 1-3 year mlb players finally get A fair share since they are most of the players on the 30 club rosters. The only way to do that is in the next Collective bargining agreement MLB agrees to compensate these players from the money the elite players make and add money from ownership. A partnership is required to give a healthy MLB club. having old disabled Sr ballplayers (Cabrea, Pujols, etc.) making 30 mill per when the better players make 1 million is ridiculous. As for ownership-we need a independent MLB Commisioner from the owners only approval as fay Vincent was years ago to get fair policy.
petfoodfella
I wish people like you would stop trying to shorten the game of baseball for those who can’t live w/ out their phones to hold attention.
3 hours is FINE for a major sport. Baseball is a healthy sport.
We don’t HAVE to have a trade every single day just to please those who constantly hit CTRL+R on mlbtraderumors.
ShieldF123
A salary floor is the wrong answer, it would not help the matter at all. Only thing it would do is make bad contracts more valuable to tanking teams in trade talks.
The MLBPA did this to themselves with what they agreed to in recent CBAs. It’s going to take a long time to reverse some of the mistakes they made. Rather than fighting for luxuries like they did last CBA they should have been smart enough to fight for meaningful gains in areas like team control and the luxury tax.
Here’s the cliff notes version of the last CBA but you can read the whole thing just by googling it. They fought for club house amenities and off-days. Not useless but not smart either.
mlb.com/news/details-of-mlb-mlbpa-labor-agreement/…
slider32
Forbes had all mlb teams with revenues over 206 million last year, so they all can spend more if they want to.
davidcoonce74
The next MLBPA should address a)minor league pay and avoid salary floors, because, as the above wrote, you’ll just have weird deals like the NBA does all the time, where well-past-prime veterans just kind of get shuffled from bad team to bad team and it doesn’t make the product on the field any more watchable.
James1955
The MLB Owners would never go for a salary floor. The Owners don’t want to increase their spending.
slider32
II think the advanced metrics have made a change in the way teams do their bussiness. They are paying players on what they project they are going to do, not on what they have done. Health has a lot to do with it too.
petfoodfella
It’s like you’ve never heard of a how a business is run. Just because someone owns a MLB team doesn’t mean they have to spend $255m on salary a year.
UGA_Steve
Why are we worried about the stagnation?
This is a business with big repercussions to both good and bad decisions. Teams and players should be given time to make the right decisions. Teams struggling to make profits should not be forced to spend money just to hit a ‘floor’, especially if that money is on players that might be taking away at bats or innings from developing players for a long term run at success. An old adage was that you ‘NEVER lose with old guys’. You should always want to be giving your young players a chance and with this floor stuff that would just not happen.
There have been plenty of trades this off-season, plenty of free agent signings in the middle and lesser tiers. Even in the last couple of days you have had some movement. All those moves are being shrugged off because a few guys at the top haven’t moved.
What needs to change is the constant drone on the subject from the media. It’s ridiculous. Media must create disharmony to get clicks, so they keep whining about the sluggish off-season. I will guarantee you this, if every free agent signed on day one of the off-season the media would whine about how boring the off-season is because everyone signs so early and demand change.
Fred Mandy
Excellent point . Providers who live on clicks need content, even up to the point of quoting each other. And analytics have made GMs more cautious about decisions which could cost them their jobs.
hockeyjohn
I do not agree with you, Jett. The off season is for the teams to get ready for the next season. A major injury happens to a player in January of the off season and then the only way a team can find a replacement is free agency. That would be another strike against the low budget teams who already have to be near perfect in order to compete for a length of time. We, fans, just need to learn to be patient as our favorite teams do their best to put together a good team.
Cashford64
The point of the off-season is for teams to prepare before the next season starts, not to entertain the fans with flashy sognings and trades. It’s great when you can find enjoyment out of following the goings-on, but forcing teams to hastily make business decisions that could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars is probably a bad idea, and not good for the sport at all.
joedirte4life
This will be the same story by Mish in feburary
Fred Mandy
Seems like this story is no longer about JTR but about Mish’s opinion. .
TheShow
Braves have a smart GM who is waiting on the price to go down on JTR and other free agents. I’m glad they aren’t trading away the farm and come opening day AA will have a strong 25 man roster with plenty of options in the minors. Future looks great…
ffjsisk
So smart he just fired Clark and Bridges. I’m not so sure anymore…
petfoodfella
They weren’t on board w/ advanced metrics. It happens. Braves haven’t really nailed many drafts of late. Lots of quantity, sure.
bravesfan
I feel like the braves would be better off just making all their deals now instead of waiting this stuff out. I don’t think we have to go get JT, but if ur gonna do it, let’s do it now. Same with outfield and bullpen help.
petrie000
It’s not really up to the Braves when a deal gets done… It’s a mutual decision.
And most of the players seem fine with playing the waiting game.
bravesfan
True. I guess what I mean is closing these deals now. And at the right price, anyone will close
Fred Mandy
And agents compete and posture among themselves also,, further slowing things down.
Knowthemarket
Why would they be better off? It may very well be that the Braves made whatever offer they are going to make and aren’t willing to pay more. Even if I don’t know what that offer is I can at least appreciate the fact that they aren’t willing to just pay whatever price the Marlins want.
bravesfan
I think they would be better off cause the longer they way, the less players they can pick from and the higher the price tag can become. Less inventory, higher prices. Not to mention other players might strike deals that are too expensive setting a bar for a player the braves might want.
UGA_Steve
While you would be correct on that in past seasons, the reality is that hings have changed. Teams are going with more younger, controllable, and cheaper players (mainly for cost but also because aging players aren’t playing well into their thirties without steroids). This has caused the pool of lesser players and veterans to grow. If you aren’t going after the top tier guys you can benefit from waiting.
Not saying it always works out that way, but it certainly is different now than a couple of decades ago when you had to overpay greatly for guys like BJ Upton.
SoCalBrave
But there might be players available later, that are not available now. What if the Cubs decide they want to sign Harper and then Schwarber or Heyward become available for cheap?
Willy Mays
Heyward cheap is an oxymoron. The guy has a terrible salary no one wants to touch. Right now the Cubs would give him away if they could. To get rid of Heyward they’d have to eat a huge part of his contract and there is no reason they would do that. The guy is an albatross
dugdog83
You Braves fans would like Castellanos on your team. Defensively, he’s not as bad as you think and his bat comes up big at the right times. Would really help you guys make a run.
Knowthemarket
He is universally panned as one of the worst fielder’s in baseball. You can read about it here:
google.com/amp/s/www.blessyouboys.com/platform/amp…
bravesfan
I’d be fine with him since he can hit really well. Plus we have two elite defensive outfielders… or at least 1. So we can afford a small let down. But I would ultimately explore other options first
Stat_head
His advanced stats in RF were better than Bryce Harper’s and Nick has the excuse he was learning the position. If you dig into the stats you realize he is heavily penalized for early mistakes where he didn’t make high percentage plays. He didn’t make those mistakes later in the season. He’ll be average or slightly below average this season, making high percentage plays and understanding how to adapt to different RFs in away stadiums.
Willy Mays
DWar is meaningless. Don Mattingly was widely considered a great 1b behind only the incomparable Keith Hernandez defensively. He won 9 gold gloves and every coach manager or scout thought him a great fielder. His lifetime dWar -6.2.Nuffsaid
Stat_head
The response to your post is the reason I hope the Tigers keep & extend Nick. His defensive stats will drive down his value and the Tigers shouldn’t sell low. If they can’t extend him, his value will be much higher at the deadline. Similar to Cespedes who had the “bad defense” rep until he put solid numbers with the Tigers.

The only player Atlanta might give up is Waters, anyone else Detroit doesn’t need. Just sign him Detroit he is the kind of player you need.

Knowthemarket
He had an injury shortened season last year otherwise has had an OPS of 750 three years on a row. He’ll be platooning with Flowers. Many starting catchers don’t do that well and he signed for just $2 million; back up catchers make more.
I know a lot of Braves fans want JTR or Grandal but we should start wondering what we didn’t lose to gain them.
bravesfan
I agree with this also

Kind of tired of hearing this “once big fish sign market will fall in place” year after year. The marketplace is broken. Shouldn’t rely on the top fish this heavily and if it does, shouldn’t take this long to find a home for the top fish.
PhanaticDuck26
agreed, especially considering the fact that this was supposed to be THE MOST EPIC FREE AGENCY WE’VE EVER SEEN! … and yet, Machado and Harper have what, 3 legit suitors? after teams supposedly spent years getting ready for this? I know its still early but it does just seem a bit unfortunate for the sport in general that TWO 26 year old franchise icons are up for grabs and 85% of all MLB fans know for a fact that their team wont even make an effort…
petfoodfella
Sure, they had time, and we’re seeing basically the same teams we thought we would in for them. Besides, teams are starting to see that these mega dollar, long year contracts aren’t worth it. I’d say it’s more likely Harper is more valuable for the life of a 10 year contract, but this is 10 years they’re asking for. Not 4, not 5. 10. It’s a major decision for any owner.
Did you really expect the Pirates to be in on Harper? No.

The longer we wait the lower his price tag MIGHT drop. But there is no true correlation between the two. And Kimbrel price tag won’t drop
RicoD
There is a 0% chance of the braves trading for Realmuto and signing Kimbrel this year. That would be delightful for braves fans such as yourself but that is very much a wish and a fairytale.
petfoodfella
There is no way Kimbrel is a Brave in 2019 w/ out him accepting <$10m a season. Not gonna happen. Why do Braves fans want him back?

One blockbuster and the Braves are set for two years ! Diamondbacks r rebuild
Teheran, Duvall, Pache, Riley, Allard of Fried to the Diamondbacks for
Zach Greinke, David Peralta, Archie Bradley
Teheran slots in for Greinke at a very reasonable cost and an option for 2020, Duvall for Peralta, Pache for Pollock next year,
Riley for Goldschmidt maybe this year
Allard or Fried # 4 or 5 SP this year
Zach Greinke is the TOR pitcher the Braves need for right now. Perfect mentor for the young staff; like a second pitching coach !
Greinke, Foltynewicz, Newcomb, Gausman, ( Gohara, Soroka, Wright, Touki, Fried ) Almost two rotations !!
1) Inciarte. CF. LH
2) Albies. 2B. SH
3) Acuna. LF. RH
4) Freeman 1B. LH
5) Donaldson 3B. RH
6) Peralta. RF. LH. .300 25-30 HR
7) Flo / Mac. C
8) Swanson. SS. RH
Viz, Minter, Bradley To close out games !!
What’s not to like
Backatitagain
Braves spend more money for less value; that’s all. .277/20 projection is closer to reality. If $60 Million came back with Greinke, it could be considered without Riley.
petfoodfella
Also without Pache, I don’t see Atlanta moving him.
DadsInDaniaBeach
I know some don’t think the market stalls just because Machado and Harper remain unsigned, but keep in mind, we’re talking about $600 million between two players..Teams looking to improve will wait till that comes to fruition.
As has been stated by some, it becomes a trickle down effect. I will use just the one example. Maikel Franco. If Manny goes to Philadelphia, then Franco is made available..he would be a sought after player. For me, if I’m looking for a 3B, and I miss on Manny, I’d prefer Franco to Moose..so, I would wait….
I’m not in favor of a salary cap. Not sure it’d help.
What I do think might be a real possibility, is in the next CBA that the DH comes to the NL, and that rosters are expended by 2 each.
petfoodfella
Exactly, solid point. When you have two biggest names unsigned, it holds things up. Back up plans become needed and used, etc.
Once one of them signs, the dominos will begin to fall.
101bravesfan
Tbh who is really going pay for Machado and Harper? Like seriously Harper is asking way to much and he is an over rated player. Harper and Machado will have to settle with way less than there asking for.
doxiedevil
If the Braves cared they would have fixed the bullpen by now, 5 winters and still a mess.
Right now the Braves would be fighting the Mets for third in the NL East.
Wake me up when they add a OF and a couple solid arms.
petfoodfella
Oh stop being a dramatic 5 year old. Last year, would you have said Atlanta would finish first? No? Ok then.
Bullpen pieces are out there, and it’s early January.
Stop acting my daughters age. Stop wanting teams to make a move simply to satisfy your desire to make a move. That’s not how it works in the real world. Sure, on MLB the show. it can, but not the real world.
I don’t want Atlanta to make a move simply to make a move. I want them to make a move & be smart about it, and get as much value as they can out of it.
doxiedevil
you insult everyone this way ? or are you one of those who value only their opinions?
