Just moments after news came down of the Twins closing in on a one-year deal with second baseman Jonathan Schoop, Minnesota has announced the signing of another infielder, Ronald Torreyes to a one-year deal, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand tweeted. The team has announced the deal via a press release.
Fancred’s Jon Heyman adds (via Twitter) that the deal will be with $800k if Torreyes makes the Major League team. Dan Hayes of The Athletic further clarifies that it’s a split Major League contract for Torreyes, who does have a minor league option remaining (Twitter link).
Torreyes’ journey to Minnesota included a quick layover in Chicago, as the Cubs acquired and non-tendered the infielder within a three-day span in late November. Torreyes, 26, spent the last three seasons with the Yankees, slashing .280/.294/.370 in limited action with the big league club. For his career, the versatile infielder owns a .281/.310/.375 line across parts of four seasons. The Twins will likely look for more impactful production at the plate from Torreyes if he is to earn a consistent role at the Major League level. If he makes the club, he’ll pair with Ehire Adrianza to give the Twins a versatile couple of infielders off the bench.

Good to see the kid hoop up with a team.
EndinStealth
He cant hoop there the Lakers moved from Minnesota a long time ago.
clevefan
He can hoop with the TWolves.
Pinball wizard, it being critical. Just having a little fun on a rainy Thursday.

Now I’m a Twins fan
gotothevideotape
That is really nice of you to say that. It’s not often we see a great reply after a post.
I love that guy, so reliable and a great back up always giving his all
Slevin
He was in the minors most of last season.
Begamin
And not because of his lack of talent
thegreatcerealfamine
ok then, why was it?
pinstripes17
Because the Yankees had incredible depth offensively last season? Are you sure you’re a Yankees fan?
xabial
Two words: Aaron Boone. (like he forgot Toe was on the roster especially as yr progressed)
Girardi valued Torreyes more than Boone did. The easy cop-out is to blame Cashman.
thegreatcerealfamine
They were short depth when Didi went down, and when Torres went down. They needed infield defense more than “depth offensively, because he wouldn’t provide offense anyway. Wow, so my asking #Begamin why the guy was in the minors should make me unsure of my fandom..
Begamin
+cereal
He has a rough year last year. His wife was having health complications and one of his newborn’s died. He was absent from all of baseball for a time. When he played in the majors he did well for a backup/utility player. Its very clear it wasnt because he cant hack it. Maybe pay attention next time, i know you hardly do
thegreatcerealfamine
lol, says the guy who swore by Bird, and wouldn’t accept the truth tell it was too late..talk about lack of attention. I asked a question, and there was no need for the childish rant.
Begamin
+cereal
In June all i told you was that Bird was ramping up and then he had a good July like I predicted. I remember another time I told you he was ramping up again and he hit a grandslam the minute later. But ohhh guess im the one whos wrong. I never claimed he was a god. But jeez man i remember you told me he was slumping for 30 games straight because his his “last 30” overall stats were not good even though if you actually checked anything you wouldve seen the him do well in first 15 games of that 30 game stretch and then struggle in the latter half. Talk about accepting truths.
Youre sold that a player with high potential sucks and should be given up on and he doesnt even have 1000 career PA in the majors. Such a lack of patience. Hey, next season how about you actually watch some games
You asked a question and I, as well as others, responded. Cry more if you want
thegreatcerealfamine
Why are you all alone on an Island?
Slevin
Calm down guys I was making a point to ey.
gotothevideotape
Yes Slevin I know, but this time around. hopefully he will have more
playing time. and if not, he has almost always hit in the clutch.
gotothevideotape
X,
I will back you on that.
Bocephus
hahaha all this for Greg Bird who they can’t even trade, because he’s trash. Boy are you slow?
kimjongun2.0
Maybe the yankees shld grade judge to the twins he actually might want to go if toe is there!!!!
acarneglia
The Brewers finalizing with Schoop? Thought it was Minnesota?
baseballpun
TC’s drunk.
TC Zencka
Schoop is with the Twins, yes. Good catch, everyone.
phantomofdb
Twins getting schoop, not brewers, right?
acarneglia
Long live the Toe Night Show
sisseton
LOL weren’t the Twins signing Schoop not the Brewers. It’ll probably be fixed before anyone else sees it.
walls17
Man the twins now have little toe and Williams astudillo. They will have a soft spot in my heart for sure
summerseason
Trade for tulo! Somebody! Ideas?!
iverbure
Why would Toronto trade him when they can just get they’re doctors to say he’s unfit to play and get insurance money back on him saving them millions?
EndinStealth
Because trading him means they shed his entire contract. Insurance doesn’t cover it all.
oldmanmiller
The chances of someone taking his entire contract on trade are slim to none as well!
swanhenge
Whirlwind off season for Torreyes. Sheesh, dont unpack dude.
Bocephus
Gonna be in Korea by February.
wettle
So is Schoop signing with the Twins or Brewers? One article says the Twins, this one contradicts it.
stan lee the manly
He’s signing with the Twins. The Brewers reference shouldn’t be there
Bocephus
This guy deserves a blurb at bed.
Bocephus
*best
MetsYankeesRedSox
and the Yankees?
Done basically nothing.
Slevin
The Beta tape is finally in, and Boone has been given a full pardon.
simschifan
I know the guy isn’t Machado or anything but what the hell Cubs? You already had him.
Slevin
He’s about 1/10 of Machado, and very annoying.
simschifan
Why is he annoying?
Slevin
The Cubs never should’ve never let La Stella go. The guy is horrible with a glove, can’t advance runners in any case, and is always trying to play to the camera.
bryanpeabody
Cubs should have never got rid of La Stella.
Slevin
Exactly
54scooterb
1 year 7.5 million with Minnesota. Per Ken Rosenthal. On MLB NETWORK.
crise
Schoop, not Torreyes.
luclusciano
Glad to see Toe land somewhere.
of9376
Great deal for the Twins. Guy is a great bench piece and pinch runner. Not mention he can hit for average.
biasisrelitive
Hope it’s minor league. Is he better than adrianza?
twins33
I don’t think he’s better. He has an option left so hopefully he is minor league depth.
theoepsteinhof
Heyman must have issues. He has made these kind of mistakes often lately on Twitter. I’d love to know what the Cubs problem is! You trade $$/PTBNL to NY for Torreyes, then immediately non-tender him. This happens when you preach to fans how you need to be “creative” with payroll.
Would a $800k contract really be the reason?
Maybe Theo is hanging out with Heyman!
Juggy
Good for Ronald he deserves a place where he could play every day
Slevin
He’s not gonna play everyday anywhere.
twins33
Hopefully he’s playing everyday in AAA. He’d be on the bench in MN and Adrianza is better so he should not make the team. Though I just read that Adrianza had some kind of shoulder surgery so this is probably protection for that.
KDD
Back up plan for if Sano bombs again in 2019….
Slevin
You better hope not.
jorge78
Always loved his last name!
Sir Peregrine
He is a slightly younger Adrianza, with a better bat.
twins33
I hope you mean Adrianza has the better bat, but I’m guessing not since it seems to say the opposite.
Last two years:
Adrianza 7.2 BB%, 19.4 K%, .125 ISO in 184 games
Torreyes 3 BB%, 13.5 K%, .084 ISO in 149 games
The only thing he’s better at is striking out less and Adrianza isn’t worse than average at that.
Kraz Nadler
Why oh why. He can barely cross the mendoza line. Has shown some good pop though
downsr30
Best Cub of all time.
kleppy12
Am I missing something? His numbers are off the charts but a guy that can hit .280 should have a place on just about any ML roster.
swinging wood
A .685 career OPS isn’t great.
kleppy12
I’m not saying he’s amazing or anything but when you have half the guys in the majors batting .250 or lower you would think some team would at least give him 1-2 mil and a spot on the 25 man.
deej
You must be from 1985. BA only tells you a small part of how a player produces. Torreyes only has a career. .685. He is a terrible offensive player.
savagedeluxe
Exciting player to watch too… both are good pickups for Twins
