As they continue to seek ways of boosting their roster for the 2019 campaign, the Reds are “pursuing” free agent center fielder A.J. Pollock, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred (via Twitter). That aligns well with another Thursday report from ESPN’s Buster Olney, who tweets that the Reds have been “active” in their search for outfield help over the past week. Additionally, Heyman notes, the Cincinnati org is still in on southpaw Dallas Keuchel, who’s arguably the top remaining free agent starter.
We recently noted the potential appeal of Pollock in breaking down the Reds’ offseason opportunities, though at the time it was pure speculation. Since that post went up, the Reds made clear they will indeed be pursuing some change in the outfield mix by non-tendering long-time center fielder Billy Hamilton. That move also saved the club a projected $5.9MM arbitration salary.
With Hamilton out of the picture, the Reds are left with a pair of left-handed hitters in Scott Schebler and Jesse Winker who feature as likely corner outfield pieces. The former is an option up the middle, though he has spent the bulk of his time as a professional in a corner spot.
There’s clearly a roster fit for Pollock, then, though it’s questionable whether the Reds will or should meet his rather lofty asking price. Of course, the club may simply have interest to a lower price point, though there should be some competition that’ll support Pollock’s earning power. The Mets are said to be in the mix, with other teams surely also involved. Entering the offseason, MLBTR predicted a four-year, $60MM deal for Pollock, who’ll also require draft compensation by virtue of having declined a qualifying offer.
If the Reds do go big on a single player, it’s certainly arguable it ought to be a pitcher. The rotation, after all, is still riddled with questions. The Reds’ interest in Keuchel was reported about a week ago. In the interim, two of the other best open-market arms — Patrick Corbin and Nathan Eovaldi — have reached deals, perhaps setting the stage for Keuchel and other pitchers to begin negotiating in earnest.
baseballpun
The Reds are the Mets of the Central.
king beas
Forgot the reds had 3 starters with a sub 3.31
AZPat
I lived in an alternate universe than you. The reds best starter was 4.50. I like your universe better.
sacball
sarcasm is hard sometimes
stevewpants
Yes this statement does not really make sense. However, we can probably all agree that the reds sinking big money into Pollack is not the best idea.
baseballpun
More a joke about them going for it when there are 3 teams significantly ahead of them.
I like seeing teams going for it rather than tanking, though, so good for Cincy and NY.
Nick Hogan
I’m an optimist and I’ll admit that, but I think the Reds are only a couple pieces away from seriously contending. I’m aware how they did this year, but I don’t think surpassing some of their division rivals is out of the question with the right additions.
stevewpants
I like seeing teams go for it too but the mets pitching is so much better than the reds that it just isn’t that applicable.
sameichel
Exactly with the offense they have with the addition of senzel
sameichel
All they need are two starters and a middle reliever
juicemane
I don’t think the Cardinals are better. Would they really give the manager job to “that one guy” if they were planning on going for it? I dont think so.
They made a late run last season but the first half of 2018 is more like what they will look like in 2019, even with Goldy.
And you could argue the Brewers. How can you be significantly better when you literally dont have half a starting rotation. And the SPs they have are more like a #5 and long relief guys.
baseballpun
We all know you hate the Cardinals and you’re wrong about everything.
willymayshayse
Reds already have Dallas in the bag…..and yes i do know that!
Why does the article suggest the Reds will only spend on 1 player when they’re on record as saying at LEAST 2 pitchers?
astick
Wrong.
its_happening
Asking the exact same question from a few weeks ago….where are the Reds putting Senzel?
Yes they can (probably) have a rotation with various guys. Pollock is not the answer for this particular team nor is it the direction they should be taking. Plus someone will overpay for Pollock. Reds do it and they are in trouble.
Joe Kerr
They can put Senzel in another organization as part of a package for a good starting pitcher.
its_happening
Ok. So you deal Senzel and signed Pollock. What do you do with Gennett?
Joe Kerr
Extend if the price makes sense.
sameichel
We don’t need pollack unless it is on a one year deal
sameichel
Even then we don’t really need him
sameichel
Taylor trammell will be ready come 2020
Matfactor2
Trade Trammel
iverbure
Trade trammel and Senzel these reds fans say… these fans must love finishing last lol. Reds are just getting out from underneath a brutal lengthy contract for a often injured player. Now they want to sign Pollock.
Votto4prez
Couldn’t agree more
fieldsj2
Trammell should be an untouchable! There’s definitely no sure things but I think it would be a huge mistake to trade him. We finally have a good minor league system, we have plenty of other options we can trade.
reflect
I find it interesting that no one is really waiting on Harper or Machado.
In the past, the top free agents basically brought the entire offseason to a screeching halt. No one signed until they did. It was very annoying.
fasbal1
The money for top two guys is too steep so teams are going to their contingency plan 1st. 300 million for either player is crazy.
DoJo
They aren’t holding up the market b/c only a select few big $$$ teams should be in on those guys. Freak injury or downturn could cripple almost every organization for a decade.
swanhenge
Well, the Reds have to start somewhere.
Seemed to me their offense was pretty OK. They need some more arms. Pollack is a good fit on any team willing to take the risk. Good thing about his injuries is that they’re bone breaks and isolated things. Not like Donaldsons calf.
The market is going to push his value up and someone will have to overpay, but such is FA.
iverbure
You start by drafting and developing your own players once they’re major league ready you wait for them to mature and play. If you’re GM cant do that properly the owner shouldn’t allow him to sign free agents which will cripple the franchise for another 5 yrs. once those players reach free agency you trade them the year prior or get the pick and rinse and repeat. This is how successful small market teams operate. You don’t resign SP or 1sr basemen to massive deals crippling the franchise with 1/4 of the payroll.
ckeen1966
The Reds problem is that they have not been able to develop good starting pitchers. They are pretty loaded as far as position players although they are definitely short an outfielder. They have an abundance of position players coming up in the next 1-3 years starting with Senzel who will probably play all over the diamond to get him in the line up, probably after starting at AAA so they can gain a year of control. Then they have Trammel, Jonathan India, Shed Long, Jose Siri, Tyler Stephenson and TJ Freidl. They just need 2-3 starting pitchers, one needs to be an ace. That’s where free agency is needed with their issues in developing good starters.
sameichel
This is how we should spend our 30 million this year: sign Dallas to a 4 year deal for 20 a year, sign gio Gonzalez for two years for 8 a year and a middle reliever for the other 2 a year, next year we will have around that as well with Bailey off the books
Jason d r
I like gio Gonzalez in addition to him, I think Leake would be good to bring back or take a chance on Wade Miley
sameichel
With the offense we will have with the addition of rookie of the year candidate nick senzel, we are a definite playoff team with those three additions
Rumncoke
He be crazy to sign with them
sameichel
Lol!!!! Nothing is crazy when you are a pitcher who is allows maybe 3 or 4 fly balls a game
beyou02215
I wouldn’t want any part of Pollock anywhere near his “lofty asking price”. He hasn’t played a full season since 2015.
wrigleywannabe
If he stays healthy and the Reds are out of contention, he could be flipped
O Conchobhair
Just a smokescreen until they get deep in the Bryce stakes….
billysbballz
What are you reds giving up to score Sonny Gray? Give me some prospect names! Top 15 please.
joeshmoe11
I’ll say Jonathan India or Tony Santillan. Just my guess, maybe a lower level prospect with one of those 2
OnuLaw5
Scooter Gennett and Jimmy Herget for Sonny Gray and Clint Frazier.
I just do not envision a scenario where the Reds trade any of their top 15 prospects for a buy-low candidate with only 1 year of control.
baseballhobo
Chris Sabo is the new head coach at The University of Akron. I’m happy.
bledrules
As soon as the Reds front office figures out he wants more than $8 an hour they’ll back out
Matfactor2
The Reds need to trade Trammel or Senzel for Baum. Sign Harper and we are set. Just need one more pitcher.
sameichel
Absolutely not that is asking for trouble
Matfactor2
Trouble of having people in the stands and having someone that brings fire to the team?
sameichel
Mad bum is a free agent after next year
joeshmoe11
Trouble trading for a pitcher who’s nowhere near as good as his rotation. Madison is good but there are better options. I say Sonny Gray is a better for and would come cheaper
Matfactor2
I don’t believe Sonny is better in any way.
I would say trade for Grenkie but Arizona will need to eat a big portion of the contract.
If not them, then trade for Thor
willymayshayse
Reds already have Dallas in the bag…..and yes i do know that!
Why does the article suggest the Reds will only spend on 1 player when they’re on record as saying at LEAST 2 pitchers?
ksoze
I hope you are wrong, I don’t want Dallas or Pollock on the 2019 Reds. They would tie up too much capital. The need to sign 2 mid level arms like Gio Gonzalez and Wade Miley. If the Reports are accurate on what they have to spen they could add another quality bullpen arm in the offseason as well. If we are in contention at the all star break then we can look to trade prospects to get another arm. I want to compete in 19, but I am not willing to sacrifice 22, 23, and 24 to get it. Our team will be a lot more complete in 20, and 21.
Red X
I think if they can find an arm for the bullpen they will but with Iglesias, Hughes, Lorenzen, Garrett, and Hernendez. Not to mention a kid like Jimmy Herget coming up, Im not sure they need to make a huge commitment to the bullpen. Plus they are going to have other arms for the bullpen if needed, Rookie Davis, Robert Stephenson, Sal Romano, Brandon Finnegan(who i think is better out of the bullpen then starting).
ksoze
The Reds bullpen ranked 16th in era for 2018. To be fair they were used quite a bit, but that’s also a reason to add to the pen. It depends on what kind of a year the Reds are going for. If they are ok letting Herget develop on the club in 2019, then they aren’t going for it. Plus bullpen arms are so difficult to predict year in and year out.
willymayshayse
DC is the 1st Gio is the second……sign A.J.,resign Harvey and we are playing post season baseball Reds fans!
Dallas deal is as good as done!
willymayshayse
Bob is desperate to compete with the 150th celebration.
Tucker Barnharts Twitter feed this morning mentioned Dallas in a 150th anniversary beard competition.
Dallas replied calling Barnhart a ” bean spiller”…….. take from that what you will, but only 1 team is having a 150th celebration this season.
fieldsj2
Bad Move!!!
bjupton100
Pretty good offense all around. Seems like they should sign a catcher, a couple sp’s and maybe trade for Syndergard.
Bill Heile
Hey Reds Fans here.. . I am a Fan myself but I have to stop drinking the KoolAid our Reds are serving.. Everyday this site says they are interested/pursuing this player or that player. but signing no one yet. This is an ownership Group that can not Trade Billy Hamilton for a low A Ball player or could not trade Zach Cozart for a sack of Potatoes !!!! I will be a Reds Fan the rest of my life but I just wish the Reds would stop with the Propaganda about improving there Team this year.
willymayshayse
The Reds of already said they’re going to increase payroll. Bob Castellini is on a national stage with his hundred and fiftieth anniversary celebration of baseball in Cincinnati. It would be a black eye on the city and on baseball if the Reds did not put a competitive product on the field. Not to mention answering to the shareholders. Worst case scenario, they drop big on a couple of free agents and flip them for whatever at the break if they’re out. But you would be hard-pressed to tell me that this year above any other the Reds would not put forth the best effort to put a competitive product on the field.
ksoze
Right, it’s put up or shut up time for the Reds. I don’t want them to make dumb moves, but they need to start adding pieces to the roster. I just don’t want a big, long contract like Dallas probably wants. I hope Dickey is smart.
Kevin Weaver
Any talk about Charlie Morton? I’m not a Dallas fan and Morton has electric stuff. I understand wanting a lefty which Morton and Gio combo wouldn’t be hateful. I’m in favor of signing Pollack, he would smash at Great American. Health is always a concern with him though. They will move Gennett at the trading deadline this year for Senzel.
