The Marlins are downplaying rumors of a potential 3-team swap that would send catcher J.T. Realmuto to the Mets, per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (via Twitter). The Yankees would also be included in this hypothetical blockbuster, but the Marlins aren’t lending much credence to the idea. They do plan to move Realmuto, it seems, and with only three teams reportedly in the mix, the Marlins could be narrowing in on the market. Still, the rumor mill shifts every few moments when it comes to Realmuto, and it would seem prudent to temper expectations of a deal until word comes from Marlins camp directly. Elsewhere in player rumors…
- First baseman Adrian Gonzalez hopes to continue his playing career in 2019, and he’s improved his conditioning to do so, per ESPN’s Buster Olney (via Twitter). It’s an unforgiving market for inflexible corner infield types, however, and Gonzalez has not seen a lot of traction since he last saw the playing field with the Mets early in 2018. Still, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets the Diamondbacks could have interest in signing the veteran bat. Gonzalez, 36, has played for the Rangers, Padres, Red Sox, Dodgers and Mets across a long and storied career, but his opportunity to see significant playing time would seem to have passed. The Diamondbacks are a curious fit, if only because Gonzalez is unlikely to develop into much of a trade chip, given the current market interest, and playing time at first base is likely committed to restoring the value of Jake Lamb, a much higher-upside potential asset. Still, adding Gonzalez as a clubhouse veteran and lefty bat off the bench isn’t wholly unreasonable for a transitioning team like Arizona, especially given the exodus of so many veteran leaders. Speculatively speaking, Gonzalez could fit the mold of a been-there, seen-that veteran leader the Cubs are reportedly seeking, and their recent trade of Tommy La Stella did open a roster spot that’s been held by a lefty bat used more-or-less exclusively as a pinch-hitter. At this stage of his career, however, with his slugging numbers cratering in his last two campaigns, Gonzalez is unlikely to be a primary target anywhere, and he may have to earn a spot on a major league team as a non-roster invitee.
- Tanner Roark’s name is being floated in trade circles as someone the Nationals would be willing to surrender, per Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter). This jives with earlier reports that the Nationals continue to seek rotation reinforcements, even after the signing of Patrick Corbin. Roark, 32, has been a steady rotation presence for the past three seasons, though he has yet to recapture the magic of a 2016 that saw him post a 16-10 record with a 2.83 ERA over 210 innings. The last two seasons seem more in line with expectations moving forward, as Roark has averaged 30 starts, 181 innings, and a 4.50 ERA (4.20 FIP) over that span. His 2019 salary is projected around $9.8MM, making him a relatively affordable one-year option as he enters his last year of arbitration, though depending on the assets being asked in return, a free agent flyer, in the ilk of Tyson Ross’s recent $5.75MM deal with Detroit, may be just as (if not more) attractive to teams looking to fill out the back end of their rotation. For the Nationals, it’s a little surprising to see them shopping Roark given their lack of established depth in the upper levels of the minors. It’s not surprising that they’d want to upgrade the rotation behind Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Corbin, but to do so at the cost of Roark feels unnecessarily Sisyphean. After dealing Jefry Rodriguez to the Indians in the Yan Gomes deal, top in-house rotation candidates beyond Roark include Joe Ross, 25, Erick Fedde, 25, and Kyle McGowin, 27 – none of whom would necessarily be considered “established” rotation pieces.

Only way mets-marlins-yankees discussing a 3 team deal is if Syndergaard goes to Yanks, prospects to the Marlins, Realmuto plus to the Mets.
If I’m the Mets, Yanks have to take Vargas contract for Gray, give me someone like Chad green, and something else, perhaps as much as Frazier.
Old User Name
I heard Starlin Castro might be a part of a deal. Regardless, there seems to be a lot of moving parts in this.
braves25
So you want to give up Syndergaard and make the Yankees take on Vargas…Then get Realmuto, Gray, Green, and something else potentially as much as Frazier? You will not get anywhere near that!
The Mets give up Syngergaard and get Realmuto…I highly doubt the Mets get anymore in this trade scenario.
billysbballz
Very true!
baseballpun
Syndergaard for Realmuto straight up would be really dumb for the Mets.
I’d imagine Mets would send Thor to NYY and Conforto to MIA. Realmuto and Frazier, plus maybe another piece from the Yanks, goes to the Mets. NYY prospects go to MIA.
Vedder80
Syndergaard has more value than just Realmuto. The difference in value between a front end starter and a back end starter is larger than the difference in value between a top catcher and a serviceable catcher.
baseballpun
Agree. Realmuto is good, but the Mets need to be getting more than just Realmuto if they’re trading Thor. Otherwise they’d be better off just signing Grandal or Ramos.
If Wheeler is the pitcher going to NYY, it’s a little different, but I still think the Mets would be better off with a FA catcher than basically trading Wheeler for Realmuto straight up.
pinstripes17
Gray is way better than Vargas bud
chino31
Green ain’t going anywhere. Yanks will give up Andujar as a starting point and assume Castro. Makes sense.
BrewCrew1302
Marlins are not in the drivers seat like they think they are. They need to lower their expectations of a return a little and make a move. This 3 team trade makes perfect sense to me. What is the package that the Marlins could get is the real question
Mjm117
Haven’t found a legit report on what the Fish would possibly receive. Long shot for this to ever happen tbh.
Same person who reported this 3 team deal also stated Fish have lowered their demands, (joel sherman) To what degree? who knows. Who knows if indeed true.
BrewCrew1302
After they got bent over with the Yelich trade to my Brewers, I could see them being more cautious. I still think Brinson is going to be an okay player in the majors but nothing special.
BrewCrew1302
I would like to see the Crew put together a package for Thor. Degrom looks off limits and would cost too much but Thor is just what we need.
gson
The Marlins are clearly looking to cash in on upside / young / controllable prospects and young veteran players. The history of poor prospect results from trades play against any team willing to participate in a deal…. especially a three team deal. That caveat stated, the Marlins are in need of corner infielders and outfielders & near MLB ready pitching, both starters and relievers.
Perhaps this three team deal would be comparable to what the Marlins would agree to:
Marlins get Tristan McKenzie (CLE # 1), Mike Foltynewicz, Christian Pache (ATL # 6) and Bradley Zimmer
Braves get: Corey Kluber & Will Banfield (MIA # 8)
Indians get JT Realmuto, Kyle Wright (ATL # 2), and Bryse Wilson (ATL # 9), Miami’s Competitive Balance Lottery pick A (# 34 overall)
Perhaps other prospects/players might be included. This solves the riddle of Atlanta’s leadership, Cleveland’s catching/SP/RP reconfiguration and salary reduction and Miami’s new pair of future aces and OF’ers..
Thoughts?..
BrewCrew1302
I guess that could work.
Eddy Treadway
This makes absolutely no sense for the Braves. They could get Kubler without losing Folty. Sending him to the Marlins makes even less sense in all this. If Wright/Wilson/Pache alone isn’t enough for Kluber then move from it
Crumg
Cleveland is giving up way to much. Their number 1 prospect pitcher who is almost mlb ready.our best outfielder in zimmer plus kluber our best pitcher. The tribe has Perez at catcher whose offense is worse than gomes bit was a better framer and eric haase who is ready for a shot.the tribe want to get a outfielder like what the Dodgers have in verdugo and the also might try to attach kipnis bad contract. They need outfielders. That why the are willing to trade from a strength for a weakness. The have no desire to trade Tristan who will be in the majors this year at some point. And catcher is not a weakness
billysbballz
Your out of your mind!
Would you like Torres also?
How about Judge?
Your demands are you want the Yanks to give the Mets Chad Green, Clint Frazier plus you Get JT and then we give 3 big prospects to Marlins just for Syndegaard who is always hurt and has a violent delivery. He is a long DL trip waiting to happen and that is the truth and the reason the Mets are looking to sell now!

Hi! Just woke up…..any news on Realmuto yet?

Im assuming Sanchez is not being moved? Especially to a NL team is a terrible idea. Yanks do have the prospects to get something done with Thor

I guess Greek mythology is rarely taught anymore.

Hopefully the school system has better things to teach than made up stories from 2000 years ago. I doubt they do, but one can hope. Always thought that was a huge waste of time when I was in school, along with Shakespeare.

So are you saying, to you, history got old?

This yahoo can’t be real.

When did Adrian Gonzalez become a clubhouse leader and veteran presence?
You do not just get that moniker from being old.
When the Mets showed interest in Adrian Gonzalez, his clubhouse presence and quality as teammate were questioned from his past history as a player and club house member. Adrian Gonzalez was supposed to be a veteran presence that would guide Dominic Smith, but ended up spending most of his time hanging out with fellow Latin players.
Took you til your late 30’s to train yourself to get into condition?
Great example for the young players.
Old and unproductive first baseman with recent health issues.
Baseball has changed to value versatility. Who would want to lock up a roster spot for an unproductive first baseman that may provide some value as a pinch hitter (would clearly bet against any real productivity even as a pinch hitter). Not even worth a minor league contract with a spring invite. Waste time with him over potential prospects (considering he would not provide value to any real contender).
Only reason for a potential change would be that he finally realizes that his playing days are over and might need to change his M.O. to continue in baseball, at least as on-hand personnel (coach, manager, etc).
TrumpisMyGawd
AGon was a team leader in LA among everybody so perhaps it’s the NYets culture that’s the problem. If it it hadn’t been for him, Donnie’s last years would have been even more difficult. When he left LA he got many a thank you. Just check out his Twitter for evidence.
neo
whoah, calm down son.
you’ve never seen an old athlete say he’s improving his conditioning, or be called a great clubhouse presence?
these are old tropes every sports writer must type out countless times in their career. yes, it’s pointless and you should never read too much into it but the pages need words on them and there are times when it’s difficult to find anything else interesting about an old athlete near the end of his career. Adrian might get a tryout and if he really sucks still, he’ll fade off with a few more articles written about his exit and that’s that. peace.
He was traded thata way.
It’s gonna take some Herculean efforts to pull off a 3 team trade with realmuto. Could easily be 7 players involved if not more depending on the prospects involved.

I’m just pleased as punch to see a Greek mythology reference on this page.

I could see the Angels as a potential fit for working out a trade for Tanner Roark. Shoemaker and Richards now with San Diego has depleted the rotation. Also with Ohtani unable to pitch in 2019.
BravesFan80
Unless Realmuto comes to the Braves, I’d like to see him moved out of the division, perhaps to the Yankees instead of the Mets in this rumored 3 team trade scenario.
luclusciano
I do not think the Yankees are in the market for a catcher, especially when they need a front end pitcher

Yankees arent going to take a prospect who is gonna miss the year. Their 40 man spots are too valuable for that

Roark being traded could be surprising, but if that trade comes with a string of trades, it could look genius. I saw a couple different posts that suggested different signing/trade possibilities for the Nats – 1. Nats resign Harper 2. Nats trade Eaton, Fedde, and a couple mid-prospects to the Indians for Kluber 3. Nats trade Roark to the Reds for Gennett. Adds about net $30-35m in payroll (depending on Harper deal), but the Nats have already shown willingness to surpass the luxury tax threshold in the past. Would be neat to watch Rizzo work his magic.
PieroBr
I suspect this may be more about Roark wanting a change of scenery this season. Given Dusty eschewing his use from the playoffs in 2017 (albeit still with a roster spot) in favor of Gio. And then this past season where he went home to Atlanta decidedly early well before the end of the season. This is something that MLBTR fails to take into account making the notion not so ‘Sisyphean’.
It seems likely the Nats are close to acquiring another top-of-the-rotation starter which would push Roark down to the #5 slot with Joe Ross. And just maybe Henderson Alvarez may be ready for a bounce back season as he also provides depth at starter.
rct
This trade is only considered because of how cheap the Wilpons are. If they need a catcher so badly (they do), there are several options available in free agency. Granted, guys like Grandal aren’t as good as Realmuto, but you’d only have to give up money to get him and not Syndergaard plus another young player. This shouldn’t be an issue for an NY team, but it is.
Adding JT Realmuto while subtracting Syndergaard and Conforto (or Nimmo or whoever) doesn’t make you that much better. Adding someone like Grandal while subtracting no one does.
baseballpun
Yeah, I don’t know if the Mets would have to send anybody to MIA in a three-team scenario or not, but I know they’d have to get back more than Realmuto for Thor for a trade to make any sense at all.
2weeks
Texas needs to bring back Adrian Gonzalez.

mets are not going to trade Realmulto for Thor straight up.. that is Stupid..
