SATURDAY: Texas is willing to trade Minor for “at least a couple” of Philadelphia’s top pitching prospects, TR Sullivan of MLB.com hears. If the Phillies were to acquire Minor, they’d likely use him as a starter, per Lauber.
FRIDAY: The Phillies are “pursuing a trade” with the Rangers to land southpaw Mike Minor, according to Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer. It’s not yet clear how likely it is that a deal will come together.
Left-handed pitching has been one of several areas of focus for the Philadelphia organization this winter, with the club reportedly pursuing a variety of southpaw starters and relievers. As Lauber notes, it’s not clear whether the club would view Minor as a rotation or pen piece. Certainly, it’s possible that much of the appeal lies in his ability to occupy either role.
Minor signed on with the Texas organization last winter, wooed in part by the opportunity to return to a starting role after a nice bounceback campaign with the Royals as a reliever. He scored a $28MM deal over three seasons, with $19MM still to go over the coming two campaigns. That contract also includes limited no-trade protection, but it’s not clear if the Phillies are on his 10-team list — or, if so, whether that’d be expected to pose a barrier in talks.
Soon to turn 31 years of age, Minor turned in 157 innings of 4.18 ERA ball last year for the Rangers. That made him a useful asset, but perhaps not one that’d represent a major upgrade to a Phillies rotation that was mostly successful in 2018. Minor was not able to maintain all of the strides he had shown in 2017 when tasked with moving through orders multiple times.
Minor still threw harder (93.2 mph average fastball) than he did in his heyday with the Braves, but didn’t come close to matching the 95 mph heat he delivered in K.C. Meanwhile, his swinging-strike rate dropped from 11.8% in 2017 to 9.9% last year. It’s notable, too, that Minor has been much more effective against left-handed hitters.
The Phillies, who are said to be engaged on both Zach Britton and Andrew Miller, could see Minor as a possible multi-inning reliever and/or high-leverage lefty specialist. That he could always slide into the rotation, thus buttressing the team’s depth, is an appealing aspect that also distinguishes him from those other pitchers. Plus, Minor’s contract won’t hang a big number on the payroll for a lengthy term.
All of those concepts, of course, are also known to the Rangers and other possible suitors. It stands to reason that the Texas organization, which is presently working to re-tool its roster but has continued to invest in veteran pitching, would only be willing to move Minor if it can add truly worthwhile pieces in return.
Yay
I agree
What about THIS Mike Minor??
youtu.be/VYILKrk2fZM
Can someone explain reliever WAR to me? How does Minor have +3.8 WAR (bbref) if he had a 4.18 ERA? (4.43 FIP)
Are we supposed to completely disregard for relievers? 3.8 is solid, as is +2.2 WAR (Fangraphs)
He was a starter this past season
Ahh thanks for the reply. Still seems a little high but makes more sense! +3.8 WAR = to 4.18 ERA 4.43 FIP? Even 4.53 xFIP high. How +3.8 WAR…?
Arlington. I don’t necessarily trust war, though.
I like to use fWAR for pitchers instead of bWAR. fWAR uses their FIP and peripheral stats to come up with their WAR total while bWAR uses their actual results. Neither one is “better” it’s preference but I think most people use peripheral stats more than ERA when judging pitchers so most tend to look at fWAR when it comes to pitchers
i like to understand war
When there are two countries that have certain feelings towards each other, sometimes they feel the need to express these feelings in a physical way.
War? Huh, good god. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.
@ffjsisk
Say it again!
I don’t agree with the sentiment but I like what you did there
Because ERA for relievers IS a good measure?
well WAR certainly isn’t
He was buttressing.
Their only lefty starter last year was Ranger Suarez and he was terrible so they intend on acquiring yet another lefty, after Pazos and Alvarez, then Morgan and Davis, only to make him a specialist after he threw 157 innings? What?
This ship is going down fast.
Dont hold your tongue when u say that…
This is a far cry from the names we have heard mentioned
Put him in the bullpen amd he will shine. As a starter, you have a Porcello clone
What is a “Porcello clone”?
Porcello feels like the original enigma that gets pitching coaches fired. One year 3.15 ERA 22-4 (granted led the league in R support….) next year closer to 5 ERA. And we all know what he did in 2018… I think Rick Porcello is one of the most interesting pitchers. For the record.. JV should’ve won the Cy that year Porcello went 22-4 lol
Porcello scares me and seems like cant be figured out
ok…2018 Evoldi
Ahh, Thanks for the clarity in context.
Mike Minor just got signed..! Cheers!
Whoops thought latest update said “Phillies Signed Mike Minor lol”
He ain’t even Fa!
psychology You see what you want to see lol
he’s already signed. Phillies interested in trading for him. Texas is seeking 2 top pitching prospects…id pass maybe one top prospect amd a middle tier prospect.
in usually drunk when I post anyhow.
Porcello is on the move!!
yeah, don’t see how him and Minor have enough parallels to which you could call them the same player. One won a Cy Young while the other sat out for the second straight year. If that’s not proof enough that there aren’t enough parallels in their careers to compare them properly, I don’t know what would suffice.
RHP Rick Porcello and 1B Mitch Moreland to the White Sox for the White Sox #20 prospect RHP Jordan Stephens and 1B Jose Abreu
Love to have Moreland back in Texas, especially if Profar plays third..
Andrew Miller “is 99% sure” he wants to go to the Phillies as a closer on a 5 year deal to finish out his care according to Ken Rosenthal
Rather have Andrew Miller for a closer than Kimbrell, but for 4 years.
Altherr and Suarez for Minor….
No
Yes
No
Maybe
Phillies interested in MadBum/Smith/Watson?? How bad? Start with Sixto and we can talk
Sixto Lezcano is about 90 yrs old by now. No trade value.
LOL
Hell he was 40 when they thought he was 28..
Why would the Giants want to trade MadBum/Smith/Watson?
Because they’re not going to compete in 2019, and are in desperate need for a rebuild.
ey just cancelled her plane tickets to SF
We’re not giving up sixto for a year of Mad Bum
Smith has just as much value. He was one of the best relievers in MLB last year, and he’s making 5MM this year. Watson in a similar situation but not quite as good as smith. To acquire top talent, you have to give up top talent.
Wow, maybe Middleton meant he was going to be stupid with his money and they’re not spending stupid money…. Thanks Klentak. Eskin needs to interrogate him again.
I am not exactly feeling chipper on Minor, Miller or the other guy (LHP) they are pursuing…
MadBum yes, but with one year left he is not worth Sixto.
Who is Sixto and why would the Giants want to trade for him.
Sixto Sanchez. One of Phillies top ten prospects. He’s a pitcher.
The giants needs start in the outfield, preferably someone that can lead off…I doubt the Phillies would want to give up Sixto.
I thought six toe was Antonio Alfonseca ??
Google is your friend
As someone who follows the Giants closely, count on Madison Bumgarner having a great year next year. He’s still a stud, and the one you want on the mound when the game matters most.
His value will be very high next year and teams that are seriously competing next year will want Madison Bumgarner. Thus, the trade packagers will be loaded too with top prospects.
“teams that are seriously competing next year” So as a Giants fan are you conceding that the Giants won’t be competing next year?
Anything can happen in baseball and the Giants have proven that a few times themselves, but it is hard for me to imagine this group competing for the series
Mr. Zaidi will be spending the next couple of years retooling the Giants. The previous GM, with the green light from ownership, absolutely screwed this team for the next few years. They desperately need young, controllable talent. Hoping Zaidi can work his magic finding hidden gems like he did with the Dodgers. The Dodgers always seem loaded with talent.
So yes, I can comfortably say the Giants will not be competing next year.
I sure hope the Giants won’t be competing next year. We need a rebuild, or at least a retool, and I think Zaidi is smart enough to realize that there’s no way the Giants win the ws this year anyway.
Quit calling him “Mr.Zaidi” in every post. You’re creeping me out.
The actor who played Steve Elliot on Petticoat Junction? WHY?
I guess he was as talented as the rest of the Green Acres team.
Of course they are
“Phillies interested in Mike Minor.” Not to sound unappreciative of the article/rumor, but who haven’t the Phillies been interested in? All that money is “burning a hole in their pocket” as my older relatives used to say growing up.
I was thinking it might be easier to make an article of who the Phillies are NOT interested in lol.
he’d be a minor acquisition
Phils are like the guy who says he’s deciding between a BMW or a Mercedes as his new car and then drives home with a Corolla. Lots of big talk with little to show for it.
Ed, that’s what I’m seeing too
I mean they did get McCutchen and Segura so I’d say maybe a Legacy?
Seems like they’re pursuing many different avenues and keeping their options open. Singlemindedly eyeing the big dogs while ignoring lower tier moves isn’t how you build a good, deep team
I gave you an upvote for the solid simile
Still early in the offseason
“Big talk with little to show for it”
They moved Hoskins backed to first base, acquired one of the best hitting shortstops in the game, and signed veteran leadership in McCutchen
If that’s “little to show” then your expectations must be through the roof
McCutchen is on the way down, and for $50mil/3 yrs, not money well spent. Klentak wasted money on Neshek and Hunter last year, not sure he is a good GM. I liked the Segura move, though. If my expectations were high this season blame Phils management. I think they can’t (or won’t) close the deal on the biggest name free agents.
Cutch is more for veteran leadership and better defense. Little overpaid? Sure. Don’t get some of the negativity on the deal.
And how was Pat Neshek a waste of money?? Had a solid campaign considering he was hurt for the beginning
Book is still out on Klentak
He has the money and the green light. It’s on him. They’re not done
From a Phillies perspective, Minor makes little sense. There are upgrades over Velasquez that are equal or better than Minor and who wouldn’t require the team to trade prospects.
It would seem plausible, for less than the cost to sign Keuchel, the Phillies can sign both Britton and Miller. They would be formidable additions to a team who is not expected to see its starters pitch deep into games, Nola notwithstanding perhaps.
As for Minor? No thanks.
Minor was a very effective reliever for KC in 2017. He could be valuable to a team like the Phils as a combo reliever/spot starter
Another JD Deal !!! If this happens Colon will be back Pitching for Us # Fire JD
Hope the Rangers keep Minor, he was only bright spot last year in starting rotation. Probably be better for his career to go to Philly since JD is determine to have a 100 game loss season in 2019.. Sorry to be so negative but watching last 2 months of 2018 Ranger baseball was really hard.
A couple of top pitching prospects? JD trade him!
Really? Why? Way to go Klentek for such a “Minor”’move. Minor is 32 years old, with a string of injury issues, and your willing to move “young guns” for a trashy arm? Not the noise Phillies fans want to hear
It didn’t say Klentak wanted to ship out top prospects. It says that’s what Texas is willing to do it for.
@ philsphan1979 Minor is 30. He turns 31 the day after XMas.
But what’s his WarAge?
Thought he was older than that..either way it’s not a move that has me excited
Yes, but most of his injuries have been Minor injuries. I will now exit stage right.
This would definitely qualify as a pretty Minor transaction
I’m so sorry about this, guys.
Please don’t apologize. This board needs more humor with all the mean-spirited people lately…
Take my upvote
I’m not taking “a couple of top pitching prospects” for a mediocre starting pitcher no matter the handedness. If you’re going to let go of a few it better be a hell of a pitcher not a meh guy.
Mediocre? Take a look at his numbers pre and post injury. He’s been solid
Won 12 games on a terrible team
I’ll take a Mike minor on my team. Certainly not for top pitching prospects but some
Yes please. I want the rangers to get some goodies for that because minor is looking great these days.
The Phillies could have traded for Cole Hamels at last years dead line but elected to pass, does anyone see a problem, here?
Mike Minor is not worth “at least a couple” of our top pitching prospects.
Agreed. A couple decent fringe prospects and we eat the salary would work though.
I see a bunch of Phillies fans talking out their butts about minor being mediocre. As a Texas fan I saw almost every game he pitched and in the second half he pitched a sub 3 era. He’s worth at least 1 near MLB ready arm and one that’s still a few years off. Not to mention his extremely team friendly contract.
Houston is spot on! Except I like the 2 “ready” prospects better!
Philly got Herrera off us plus the haul ( whether they panned out or not ) they got for Hamels! Time for us to take advantage.
I’d be happy to have him on the team
Why do the Phillies want to use him as a starter? Every time he’s given a rotation spot he almost never really excels, but when he was given a bullpen role, he did great.
Look at his numbers pre and post surgery
Second half last year he has 2.94 era in 10 starts for a terrible team
For the right price, he’d be a good get for the fightins
For the right price, but I highly doubt the Phillies will be willing to part with multiple top pitching prospects (especially Sixto, Adonis, and De Los Santos) for Minor.
mlb1225. I agree. That won’t happen. Start with de los santos and put together a package from there and I think they could get something done
This can’t be serious! For a couple of top prospects? This guy sucks!!!
You must be from Philly – what an idiotic statement!
Typical Philadelphia BS
He’s not wrong. I agree with him and I’m from Philly. Minor is bullpen depth, a spot starter, at best, a back end of the rotation guy. He’s no more of an upgrade from Vince Velasquez, Nick Pivetta or Zach Eflin. Why would we give top pitching prospects for that.
No thank you to Mike Minor. Love Little Matt Klentak
If the Phils would ever part with TWO top prospects the return would have to be much greater than Mike Minor. Klentak needs to be looking at outstanding young talent, not aging vets. Check with Mets about Syndegaard, the Marlins about Realmuto, etc. If the Yanks get Machado, inquire about Andujar. Why spend time and money on over the hill guys with less talent?
Oh wow, its almost like I mentioned this before and was immediately ridiculed! Well, sounded good until i heard “multiple pitching prospects.” Sadly Jake Thompson and Alec Asher aren’t here anymore.
Don’t want Mike Minor if we have to give up a decent prospect(s) to get him. He had one good year as a lefty relief pitcher back in 2016. The guy is a walking medical dictionary. Plus, ya gotta pay him about $10 million per over the next two years. No thanks, I’ll pass.
If the Phillies wanna roll the dice on a LH starting pitcher, Gio Gonzalez or Wade Miley might be worth a bet. Gio was pretty darn good in 2017 but not so hot last year except for a few late season starts with Milwaukee. Miley has pretty much been a BP pitcher for the past few years, but something clicked for him with the Brewers last year. I wouldn’t bet a lot of cheese on that happening again. However, both of the aforementioned only cost dollars and Middleton has a lot of those to pass around. Phillies can afford to take a long shot gamble or two and hope they get lucky.
