The latest from around the NL East…
- The Mets have Adam Ottavino and David Robertson on their list of bullpen targets, SNY.tv’s Andy Martino tweets. It’s fair to assume that the Mets are casting a wide net in their search for relievers, and either Ottavino or Robertson would represent an excellent setup option for newly-acquired closer Edwin Diaz. Since Robertson would reportedly prefer to pitch for a team in the Northeast, the Mets may have a geographical edge on many suitors, though other clubs in the area (i.e. the Red Sox and Yankees) have also been linked to Robertson’s market.
- In other Mets news, the team continues to explore possibilities on the trade front, though some of their most high-profile options (both internal and external) don’t seem to have much traction at the moment. Both Fancred Sports’ Jon Heyman and SNY.tv’s Andy Martino report that the Mets and Padres don’t seem close on a possible Noah Syndergaard swap since San Diego refuses to include elite prospect Fernando Tatis Jr. in talks (not to mention some other top minor leaguers, as Heyman reported last week). On the acquisition front, Martino also notes that there doesn’t seem to be much cooking between the Mets and the Marlins or Indians in respective talks about J.T. Realmuto or Corey Kluber.
- Nationals GM Mike Rizzo told reporters (including the Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty) on Friday that he had been in touch with DJ LeMahieu’s camp, with the caveat that the team has checked in on close to 40 players as a matter of due diligence. Second base stands out as a logical position of need for the Nats, as Howie Kendrick and Wilmer Difo represent the club’s top current options at the keystone, though Rizzo noted that he is comfortable with that duo going into the season. Middle infield prospect Carter Kieboom could also be a long-term answer by 2020 or 2021, so a free agent in search of a lengthy multi-year commitment (like LeMahieu) might not be a perfect fit. Then again, MLBTR predicted only a two-year contract for LeMahieu, so if a longer deal isn’t on the table anywhere else, the Nats could sign him for their win-now push and then prepare to have Kieboom take over come 2021.
- All eyes will be on J.T. Realmuto during the Winter Meetings, as MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro provides a roundup of the trade speculation swirling around the Marlins catcher. Though at least 14 teams have expressed some type of interest in Realmuto, it doesn’t seem as if any deal is close, as Miami is holding firm on very high trade demands for the All-Star. The Marlins are intent on adding quality young talent for Realmuto, and aren’t willing to dilute their return just to get some more money off their books, Frisaro writes. This would seem to rule out a scenario where the Marlins try to attach a high-priced player like Martin Prado as part of a Realmuto trade.

After the Cano acquisition the Mets have Ellsbury, Fowler, and Cueto in their sights.

Any interest in Darvish and Heyward?

Syndergaarden Cop
marlins are a joke. let them keep JTR, and then get nothing as he walks as a FA
justin-turner overdrive
He has like 3 years left, any team could EASILY pay more for him later than they would right now. Doubt he’ll make it to FA before then, but they don’t have to trade him asap.
Syndergaarden Cop
he’s wanted off that trash team for a long time

He’s a Braves fan who still keeps talking about how good his prospects are that haven’t played in the majors yet.
bush1
He’s got two years left and trading for catchers mid season is difficult because they have to learn the whole staff in a hurry. They almost have to trade him this offseason. But they’re the Marlins and after the Yelich trade last year who knows what those clowns will do.
Dagoat
Good points and info… thanks
brandons-3
I think they’re more afraid of making a bad public relations deal than trusting their scouting and seeking a fair package. They want a Swanson/Inciarte *reaction* deal.
bush1
Trusting their scouting hasn’t worked out well and leads to bad public relations when everyone realizes they got a bag of coal for him.
mikeyank55
Just like Noah and Jacob, right wise guy?

sure. im no mets fan

Sign Ottavino, Mets… Save Yanks from signing him
33 year old reliever finally had a good year? Pass.
Sign DRob, Yankees; he’s been money his whole career!
justin-turner overdrive
If the Mets get Robertson and Ottavino then Brodie looks more and more like a genius. They’re very close to being legit contenders if those two come on board.
bush1
There is nothing “genius” about that Diaz/Cano deal. I realize Cano performed well when he can back from his suspension but for Seattle to get off Scott free on the last couple years of that deal, gain good prospects, and it only cost them a closer was borderline genius from Seattle. The Mets were literally the only option for Cano’s since the Yanks were out and he only wanted to play in New York yet they figured out how to lose the deal and take on all kinds of awful future payroll.
Bill
They got Diaz when other teams had been told that he was unavailable. Seems like they deserve some credit for that.
LongTimeFan1
@bush1
You’re not being accurate.
The fact is the Mets shed two years of Bruce and one of Swarzak, plus received 20 mil from Seattle which essentially makes the Cano acquisition 5 years @ 12-13 mil per for a bona fide #3 hitter with extensive hitting knowledge who’s aging well and should continue doing so.
Additionally, Cano wanted to return to the Northeast. You say he only wanted to return to New York – implying he would only waive his no trade for New York – which I find far fetched and inaccurate.
Losing Kelenic sucks but the Mets essentially obtained 4 years of Diaz, one of the best closers in the game at 24 for Kelenic, Dunn and Bautista and blocked the Phillies from obtaining him which they were trying to do.
Willy Mays
Your numbers are inaccurate.Diaz is going to be a very well paid player so Swarzak and Bruces salaries wouldn’t be going to offset Canos salary.Figure Diaz for 10 this year maybe 12 or 13 next year which means he negates Swarzaks money this year and Bruces next year. That means Canos salary is much more than you cited because Mets do have to pay Diaz.Three years from know the Mets willbe paying close to 40 mill for a 39 year old Cano and Diaz
bush1
Bruce and Swarzak and $20 million don’t make up for how truly awful Cabo’s contract is. I realize how talented of a hitter he’s been over his career, but the fact is he’s 36, and going to decline fast very very soon without PED’s. It just happens… Also Bruce and Swarzak could’ve been sold off for at least a little bit if the Mets paid their entire contract or most of them in other deals. It would’ve been so much smarter to just sign free agents, keep your prospects, and not have Cabo’s last 3 years. Also, yes Diaz will get expensive eventually in arbitration, and he’s only a closer so it’s not like he can have that much value in the first place.
bush1
Not Cabo *Cano
haringbone
Your looking at your Meta thinking now their going to contend because they spent a lot of $. Look at the Padres about 4 years ago when AJ Preller decided to spend to win. Unless your team is close and your minor league system is set it probably ain’t gonna work. Giants last year same thing. Y’all think a agent is all the sudden take you to the promised land. Delusional bunch of Mets fans if you ask me.
callingoutdummies247
Scott free? They sent $20 million and took on bad contracts not to mention send one of the best young controllable relievers in the game for pennies on the dollar. But year Seattle got away Scott free lol
bush1
$20 million is nothing on Cano’s albatross contract. I’m not sure why people think they did well in the deal. Good luck with that Mets. Jarred Kelenic is going to be a stud. Good luck watching him for Seattle when you have a 40 yr old Cano and an expensive closer thru arbitration.
steelerbravenation
Met, Philly & Nat fans need not to even think about Realmuto. If he is to be traded in the division it will be to the Braves. Those teams can’t compete with the Braves in terms of prospects. And Albies is off the table.
Brixton
just because they have better prospects doesnt mean they’re more willing to include them.
justin-turner overdrive
That’s emphatically untrue as the Marlins and Mets have already had talks about him and Miami said they wanted Rosario, so yes, the Mets fans can think about Realmuto, as they have come the closest out of all 4 of those teams so of actually getting him! dumb dumb dumb
steelerbravenation
That’s not closest to getting him that’s going the longest before getting hung up on
Try again

they want Albies or no deal.. Mets are at least considering Rosario as centerpiece..
steelerbravenation
Stop the nonsense whatever package the Mets, Nats or Phillies come up with the Marlins will shop it back to the Braves and they will beat it.
Everybody knows AA moves in stealth mode.
Now all of a sudden the Marlins want Albies but last year at the deadline they were talkin bout Riley & Soroka please nobody in the division can match up with the Braves
Papabueno
The Nationals already signed Kurt Suzuki and traded for Jan Gomes. They’re no longer in the Realmuto mess.
Any team in the division will have to “overpay” to get him anyway.
steelerbravenation
Rosario is no Albies they can consider it all they want. Rosario is not even Camargo or even Swanson for that matter.
Gotta give domething to get something so Riley would be on the table. So many pitching prospects I would say they can have Soroka too even though with the Haitian population down there I don’t know why they wouldn’t be looking for Touki to be the centerpiece.
MetsManMetsFan86
But the Braves took Albies off the table, so why do you keep mentioning him when you are talking about braves trade chips
Polish Hammer
Wait, Kluber is on the market?
sufferforsnakes
No way.
94' World Champs!
HBO needs to do a Hard Knocks type show for MLB front offices, I’d love to see how much work goes into a trade or a signing. The idea of navigating interest in a player like Realmuto would make for quality viewing, 1/2 the league intrested maybe 1/4 has the assets to acquire him, The outcome could very well dictate how well the franchise performs over the next 5+ years. Don’t get me wrong it would take a lot of the intensity off it out when you know the outcome, but the whole process would be fun to witness especially 5 years down the road when you see what they could have done.
Slevin
Nobody would watch it.

94' World Champs!
Probably not, it’s not like there are web sites which are dedicated to transactions and the inter workings of front office baseball with fans who religiously check in and post. My bad.
Jacob Sizemore
Watch Moneyball with Brad Pitt. Great movie for a baseball fan.
asuchrisc
Too many players would get their feelings hurt by knowing they were being offered and it would make for an awkward situation for the front offices. Didn’t the cards guy who made the Astros trade files public get in trouble for that? I would think it would be fascinating though to see what the offers really look like and the strategy of the teams.
94' World Champs!
I agree it’s highly unlikely for those reasons, its poorly portrayed as these GMs get a phone call, barter with the opposing GM/Agent and get the owners approval when it’s a much more complex process.
haringbone
Watch Draft Day. Probably give you what you think those Front offices looks like. Probably totally wrong too. W analytics I’m sure ideas get shopped through 3-4 offices before they get a stamp.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
The Padres should try looking at other options if the Mets keep asking for Tatis in a Thor trade. Maybe they’ll figure something out during the Winter Meetings.
xabial
Just wait a year until trade-value, naturally, goes down.
Who else’ll trade for him at that price? Cant blame Mets cuz like I said in “Padres interested in Noah” thread… Three years of Noah Syndergaard team-control no joke
MetsYankeesRedSox
Trade Thor now while value still high.
bleacherbum
Xabial is trying to get Preller fleeced. Don’t do it AJ.
Trading Tatis Jr. for Syndergaard will be the stupidest thing he could ever do. That’s our SS of the future for a guy who has yet to prove he can be a healthy reliable option year in and year out. Hard Pass if NYM won’t do the deal without him.
Friarfaithful117
I don’t understand why the Mets would move syndergaard now after the Cano deal. If anything they should be looking to add. Padres should wait until next year to acquire an “ace” to see what they have in their more advanced prospects.
shortytallz
Prado injured his eyeballs reading this post.
padreforlife
EVT really Kluber is in walk year. EVT is run by amateurs
Friarfaithful117
Kluber has two team options after the upcoming season.
RedRooster
The Yelich trade was the only really bad trade the Marlins made last year. They can bring Ozuna back next year if they really miss him that much and on Stanton they were probably much relieved to get out from under that contract and would have gotten back better prospects if Stanton was willing to approve a trade to STL or SF.
blackleather
I think Realmuto winds up in San Diego….
Friarfaithful117
Why? He only has two years of control and San Diego probably won’t be competitive this year.
Mjm117
Not to mention they have Mejia/hedges
But I’m down for Tatis Jr/Baz as headliners
blackleather
Because I think they’d extend him, soon after acquiring him. He hits better than Hedges…gets on base more than Hedges…and has a better OBP than Hedges. So the question of why trade for him when he’s only controllable for two more urs is sorta mute.
They can use Mejia as his backup, while Mejia logs time in the OF and wherever else they see fit to use him. Or they can trade Mejia, and use Hedges as a backup to Realmuto. Which sorta makes sense, given Hedges lack of hitting.
tonysbrewcrew00
Howie Kendrick when healthy is great. He’s just old and injury plagued of late.
Papabueno
He and Ryan Zimmerman have become DL buddies.
Papabueno
DJ LeMahieu is a very good player, but I worry about his home/road splits. It’s hard to tell what kind of production you’d get out of him at sea-level. Tough call for any GM.
