Why would the Diamondbacks trade Goldy to the Cardinals (or any team for that matter) pending an extension? I feel like the sole reason for trading him is to get something for him before they lose him to free agency in a year. If he were willing to sign an extension, the Diamondbacks wouldn’t trade him they would be the ones that extend him.

Agreed. Same for trout. And other superstars. Either decide sooner than later. Unless they wait till playoff hunt and trade deadline to unload for top dollar prospects. I would just rather have someone a full year than for a few months.

The dbacks are pretty much in full rebuild mode. The sooner you sell Goldy the more you get for him. If you give a negotiating window and he signs, you could get even more. Plus, the whole “full rebuild” thing is why he wouldn’t want to sign an extension there. The cards are loaded with young pitching, they should be competitive for most/all of an extension makes sense to sign on to be there for the foreseeable future.

Goldy means way more to the Diamondbacks than whatever he does on the field. If he is open to an extension the Diamondbacks wouldn’t even consider trading him. They would want to extend him themselves. If they trade him the idea is to try and do what the Yankees did with Chapman.
And seriously, people need to stop it with this “negotiating window” b.s. If his remaining club control isn’t enough for you the smart move is to wait until he’s a free agent and sign him. He’s not going to give any discounts to some team he’s never played for so why give up premium prospects on top of that?

3:16 I don’t really get why they threw Pazos in, either, but you can’t act like Nicasio and Pazos are comparable assets. Adding Nicasio shed another $9 MM for the Mariners, so his inclusion weighed down what they could expect in return.”

Pure and simple, Dipoto is in salary dump mode. He wants all large contracts off the books. Bruce and Santana have as much chance of playing out their 2 remaining contract years with the Mariners as the Royals and Padres have of meeting in the 2019 WS.
They “like” Crawford? They like that he’s a warm body that suits up @SS for a bit above minimum salary.
Yes, Nicasio gets $9mm next year. That’s a lot of money for a relief pitcher – especially one of his ability. If the Phillies were going to take that salary, they wanted a cheap body as well.
In every trade Dipoto has made since the season, he’s always taken on less years and money then he gave up. He hopes that by the trading deadline he has no large contracts on the books, just maybe some reasonable deferred payments.
