Rumors about a discussed three-team trade between the Mets, Marlins, and Yankees set the baseball world abuzz on Monday, though most recent reports have cast those talks are much more speculative in nature. If Mets fans were stunned at the idea of Noah Syndergaard potentially going to the Yankees as part of those three-team rumors, how would Yankees fans feel about Gary Sanchez going to Citi Field? The Athletic’s Marc Carig (Twitter link) reports that one of the many permutations of the Mets/Yankees talks saw Sanchez becoming the Mets’ new catcher. It isn’t known if the Marlins were involved in this scenario, or if it would’ve resulted in J.T. Realmuto or Syndergaard going to the Yankees, but whispers continue to swirl that the Yankees could be looking for a change at catcher, no matter how firmly GM Brian Cashman has continued to stand by Sanchez.
Even if it involves a rare trade with a crosstown rival, it seems clear that new Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen is certainly looking at every possibility to upgrade his roster. Some more Mets-related rumblings…
- Adam Jones and his representatives have opened a line of communication with the Mets, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports (Twitter links). (Puma initially reported the sides had met face to face, but later retracted that aspect of the discussions.) With Yoenis Cespedes a health-related question mark for 2019, the Mets are looking at Jones and other right-handed hitting outfielders. Jones is hitting the open market for the first time in his career after spending the last 11 seasons with the Orioles.
- Andrew McCutchen was another name on the Mets’ list, according to Fancred Sports’ Jon Heyman (Twitter link), though at a much lower price tag than the $50MM deal McCutchen received from the Phillies.
- The Mets already have a right-handed hitting outfield option in the form of Juan Lagares, though MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter) hears that the Mets have been trying to find a trade partner for Lagares. 2018 was a lost year for the defensive specialist, as a torn plantar plate in his left big toe resulted in season-ending surgery after just 30 games. Given the injury and the $9.5MM owed to Lagares in salary next season, the outfielder will be a tough sell in trade talks, unless New York eats some money or deals him for another bad-fit type of contract.
angelsinthetroutfield
Jones played for Seattle no?
Paul Miller
Yes, then was traded to Baltimore in that Erik Bedard deal.
driftcat28 2
And what a trade that turned out to be
marinerfan
Eeesh….you had to bring that up?
michiamojohn
yup. parts of first two seasons. so yes it’s inaccurate that his first 13 years were with baltimore.
lowtalker1
I guess you can say during that time he say limited action over the course of two years and once he went to b more he played full time. So, yeah I see what they mean on both ends
lowtalker1
In the two years in Seattle he never achieved 150 pa but he was on their roster long enough in the first season to lose his status
JJ Wattcha Going to do Brother
The days of getting a teams #1 pitching and hitting prospect for a starter are over folks. Heck of a deal the Orioles made that year.
dimitrios in la
Got Tillman in that deal too.
JJ Wattcha Going to do Brother
That’s what I meant. We won’t see a deal like that again probably.
anthonyd4412
Cubs did it to get Quintana. Yeah I know.
Bert17
Q had a team friendly multi-year contract. Seattle got the decaying husk of the very talented, always injured Eric Bedard.
michiamojohn
he just changed it to 11.
emac22
Sanchez to the Mets JT to the Yanks with Thor and Andujar to the Marlins always seemed like the obvious base to build from.
NickyNoodles
Lose Syndergaard and gain Sanchez, when you can go out and sign Grandal or Ramos instead? Terrible idea…terrible.
Jai
Sanchez is terrible defensively. Ray Charles could.see that.
lowtalker1
Do you realize the only reason the yanks and Mets were talking like that for jt to go to queens
emac22
I don’t think so. I think the Met’s would take Sanchez or JT and probably prefer Sanchez due to the oh so important years of control their fans demand.
Jai
Um…yeah. I do. But thanks just the same.
andrewgauldin
So Thor and Andujar to the Marlins for JT. Did you get your players mixed up?
emac22
MIssed a comma after thor.
Thanks!
bernbabybern
Pass that stuff, bro.
rivera42
Let me guess, a Marlins fan?
emac22
Reading is fundamental.
rivera42
Isn’t writing, too? It appears that you missed an all important coma according to the conversation above. Haha, but sure, attack others for your blatant mistake. How rich. Oh, and in such a scenario, Andujar alone isn’t enough for Realmuto.
snotrocket
Hard to tell if the real Sanchez is the one from last year or the one from the previous season and 1/3 or a season.
cleonswoboda
he’s had 2 full seasons in MLB and has led the league in passed balls each year, getting worse. if he’s still a catcher in a few years, I’d be surprised. his fielding stats are horrible. take him out of Yankee Stadium and what do you think his .186 BA from 2018 would be?
billysbballz
So Yanks giving up Sanchez and Andujar? LmAo please stop
burn0820
That’s a terrible trade for the Mets and Realmuto isn’t worth Thor and Andujar. The Mets were only trading Thor to the Yankees if they got Realmuto.
emac22
That was a typo.
Marlins get Andujar.
JT and Thor to the Yanks.
Sanchez to the Mets.
Bozo
Are you bloody serious?
sam 17
NOW you’re talking.
As much as I’d like to see it… not happening.
Etone888
Then it wouldn’t need to be a 3 team deal. Yanks could make two separate trades.
ReverieDays
Oh joy, more Mets news.
tealmarlin
The Mets would be crazy to let go Syndergaard, I hope the Marlins land Andujar.
MrMet62
Minority opinion for sure, but I’m happy with Lagares in centerfield. He’s a fantastic fielder and was hitting over .300 when he got injured playing hard.
Mr. Slave's Gerbil
I could live with Lagares in Center only if the Mets sign Grandal or Ramos. If the Mets sign or trade for a defensive first catcher, I think they still need more offense and CF is the one obvious spot to improve.
Soldierofgod619
Realmuto is a very good catcher but only 2 years of control cmon. Some of these trades are ridiculous. Suprised the Marlins werent asking for this much when they traded Yelich. Why dont the indians go in on a 3 team deal which sends Bauer to NYY,Realmuto to Indians, Andujar plus a solid prospect to Miami.
emac22
Probably has to do with the fact that there was a huge glut of corner outfielders and there is never a glut of great catchers but supply and demand theory is probably a few years off for you.
Soldierofgod619
Yelich is a stud even before he played his first game for Milwaukee. The Marlins should have been looking for 1 controllable mlb player plus some prospects. Brinson as the headliner was was a bummer
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
The Marlins got robbed in the yelch deal. Granted Milwaukee doesn’t have a good farm system.
emac22
2 years of control?
When are you guys going to think and stop regurgitating whatever your moms spoon feed you?
Years of control matter but you compare players on skill. Years of control are not the only relevant factor.
Soldierofgod619
Trevor bauer 5.7WAR>JT Realmuto 4.3 WAR
emac22
Fans who think WAR is how you rate players < Dirt
Soldierofgod619
Mike Trout,Mookie Betts, Jacob Degrom have hit 10 WAR recently and they are considered elite so i dont think its a bad way to measure overall performance.
emac22
I wasnt accusing you of knowing what youre talking about.
mlb1225
Yea, but why trade prospects that could help you for more than 2 years for a guy that after 2 years, isn’t guarenteed to return to you?
Soldierofgod619
Both Bauer and Realmuto would make the Yankees and Indians better. Yankees seem open to Letting go of Andujar for the right player but unsure of what prospect the Indians would give up.
emac22
Don’t you do that all day long as long as you’re getting the better players?
sufferforsnakes
Because the Indians don’t need another catcher, they need OF and bullpen help.
You haven’t been paying attention, have you?
Soldierofgod619
Unfamiliar with the Indians catching depth last i saw Gomes was traded so maybe they wanted a offensive upgrade at catcher. Padres have a bunch of corner outfielders and young controllable bullpen arms but getting Bauer or Kluber will be expensive.
jbigz12
let’s see Roberto Perez -.5 WAR yes that’s a negative sign. He can’t hit a lick. Literally cannot hit. Eric Haase? Those your guys? The Indians would look better with a decent catcher but they aren’t spending any money on that position clearly. They’d both be considered needs for a playoff team. But maybe you’ll take the Red Sox route and win despite it. Only problem is they had a great OF already in place.
santheman3
Pray the Mets sign Adam Jones. He will be the new grandyman and that worked wonders in 2015. Think Jones is better than Pollock at a way cheaper option. Plus he is an established hitter and can lead our young outfield
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
Nobody want juan Lagares. Hes trash. Even when fully healthy
top jimmy
Realmuto is exactly what the Yanks need if they are serious about contending this year. Not only would he be a huge upgrade to the defense, but his high contact, high on base bat would also be a huge improvement over Sanchez’s feast or famine bat. There’s way too many strikeouts in the Yanks current lineup. Besides, Sanchez is no longer the Yanks catcher of the future. Ziegler and Breaux are the future, and Realmuto with his remaining years of control is the perfect stopgap and mentor until they are ready.
goldenmisfit
Really have to love the fans of the New York Mets. If you take Gary Sanchez and forget last season and put him on any other team they would be screaming for their general manager to go and grab him. Offense is their problem and he fit that need.
Solar Flare
Yes, because even with his terrible 2018 season his 18 home runs still would’ve been tied for the 2nd most home runs on the team with Todd Frazier and Asdrubal Cabrera.
nitemare
I would do thor for sanchez straight up
rjtfd
Lol….That’s funny
zmay718
Sanchez to Mets, Nooooooooo-
Not the worst catcher in the history of catchers to catch de Grom.
Noooooooooooo-
jwt421
WAR is fine as a counting statistic to determine a players value to their team. Fangraphs is pretty clear that two 4.0 WAR players are indistinguishable in value to their team for that year. You can make a general argument that a player with a WAR of 6.0 was more valuable to their team than a player with a WAR of 4.0.
Realmuto looks great because the drop off of talent after him at catcher is significant. Look at the Fangraphs leaderboards and there are only 8 catchers, him included, that were of more value to their team than any replacement AAA catcher.
Even with that, I wouldn’t give up Thor for him with Grandal still on the FA market. He’s not Realmuto, but he’s a big upgrade over what is currently there. Even at just 25 starts and 154 innings, Sydergaard provided more value to the Mets last year than a lot of other pitchers. You have to replace that value somewhere.
emac22
I think you underrate the impact of an elite catcher. They are far too common in the world series and far too rare to not accept a correlation.
The mets don’t spend enough money to win with so much value in starting pitching. They’ve sort of proven it doesn’t work.
Out of place Met fan
Because of course both Realmuto and Sanchez have caught WS games?
shortytallz
Thor’s Thots would look good in Yankee Mausoleum.
nyy42
You ALL sound like a bunch of morons!
Not ONE of you have a single clue!
Arguing in a chat room… Children!
Pilot Mike
What are you supposed to do in chatroom’s?
king beas
Why do all Yankee fans seem to insist Gary is a good hitter when he just hit under .200. Players who hit under .200 and play over 50 games aren’t elite hitters they actually suck
santheman3
Mets just sign Grandal, Robertson and Jones then call it a day
