Outfielder A.J. Pollock may be looking for six years on the open market, Jon Heyman of Fancred reported among many other recent notes. That seems an optimistic target, though certainly it doesn’t hurt to aim high, at least initially. Still, finding the perfect fit to pony up even four years for Pollock isn’t easy, despite his lofty position in an otherwise barren center field market. The teams linked to Pollock so far this offseason – the Reds, Mets, Astros and Braves – have by and large augmented their lineups through alternative means. The Reds just added two fairly notable outfielders in a trade with the Dodgers, the Mets filled their need for a righty bat with Wilson Ramos, and the Astros signed Michael Brantley. While none of these necessarily precludes these teams from bringing on Pollock, they certainly lessen the urgency for the Reds, Mets and Astros, respectively. Speculatively speaking, the White Sox, Giants or Indians are teams that could be fits for Pollock moving forward.
Meanwhile in the free agent market…
- Speaking of top free agents, backstop Yasmani Grandal is believed to “have four years somewhere if he wants it,” per Heyman, which seems to indicate that the veteran is sitting on some strong offers already. The Reds are among the clubs with interest, though the long-term presence of Tucker Barnhart means Cincinnati can be patient.
- Elsewhere on the catching market, there was a bit of drama yesterday involving Pirates receiver Francisco Cervelli. Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic tweeted that the team was “very, very close” to sending the veteran to the Dodgers, querying whether medical problems scuttled the deal. GM Neal Huntington offered a rare public rebuke of that rumor, however, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports (Twitter links). Huntington says the Bucs never “discussed any name with the Dodgers” regarding a possible Cervelli swap. He says that “the implication that a trade was nullified due to a failed medical review is completely wrong.”
- Heyman writes that the Athletics sought to bring back veteran receiver Jonathan Lucroy, offering him $4MM for the 2019 season, but he seems to be holding out in hopes of getting more elsewhere. Lucroy signed late last offseason, inking his deal with Oakland in March, so both sides have shown a willingness to take the patient approach in waiting out the market.
- A number of trade possibilities still seem to be swirling, though it’s tough to say at this point what likely will or will not get done. Yankees infielder Miguel Andujar “appears to be on the block, for the right price,” says Heyman. Of course, the Yanks are likely looking for high-end MLB assets in any swap involving the young third baseman, who had an impressive debut season in 2018. Despite concerns about his defensive handle at third, the 129 wRC+ and 27 bombs Andujar posted as a 23-year-old ought to have no trouble returning major league talent for New York.
- Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca examines the situations of Blue Jays hurlers Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez, noting that president Mark Shapiro made clear recently that the organization does not feel compelled to reduce its asking price on either pitcher. The Reds have been the most eager in pursing Stroman, but their recent acquisitions of Tanner Roark and Alex Wood may lessen the likelihood of a deal. Given that both pitchers still have multiple years of team control, it might behoove Shapiro and the Blue Jays to start the season with the pair of righties in their rotation. A strong start to the 2019 season might be enough to generate the type of return Shapiro desires.
- The Mets have some new potential schemes in the oven, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. It seems the club is getting hits on backstops Travis d’Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki. A backup outfielder was the intended target in a deal for either backstop, but a spare infielder who could back up Amed Rosario at short might be a better fit. They were eyeing Rangers southpaw Mike Minor, but that push has “stalled” as the Mets aren’t eager to put together the type of package that fits the Rangers’ ask. If anything, GM Brodie Van Wagenen has proven an action-oriented approach, so it’s safe to assume the Mets aren’t done dealing yet this offseason.
redsfan48
A Reds lineup with some combination of the following would be an absolute powerhouse
1B – Votto
2B – Scooter
3B – Suárez
SS – Peraza
C – Grandal/Realmuto
OF – Puig
OF – Schebler
OF – Winker
I really think if they go out and get one of those catchers, and then use Barnhart as a part of a package to grab another starting pitcher, they could be serious contenders.
gocincy
While the catcher options are great, I’d still prioritize starting pitching and another bullpen arm over catching. I think the pitching can be improved without digging into the farm system. Kuechel would be my primary target right now if I were in charge. And I’d be dangling Schebler for bullpen help. Ervin can platoon with Kemp, if need be.
thegreatcerealfamine
Why did they do that trade in the first place?
jchiaratti
To get wood and puig while dumping bailey? Seems pretty obvious
thegreatcerealfamine
Dumping Bailey I can see, but taking on that salary I can’t. Wood is an injury waiting to happen, Kemp is horrendous in Left, and Puig is Puig.
redsfan48
It’s a near wash in terms of salary. The Dodgers sent $7M to help even it out.
dcrising
Reds spend $15M more than they would have and get 2 starting outfielders and a rotation piece. All the salaries they took on are only for the next year so not much risk either. Good move for both teams
Slevin
Greater move for the Dodgers, who would of thought they could move Kemp. Harper come on down..
wrigleywannabe
Exactly, if they cant resign any of those guys, they gave up solid prospects for one year if slightly better baseball. They ate still not close to contending
redsfan48
They only spent $8M more when you factor in the $7M the Dodgers sent.
redsfan48
If Wood and/or Puig have good years, they are legitimate candidates to receive a QO, so worst case, the Reds should get some draft picks back.
DodgerNation
You really think either will have a good enough year to risk paying them 17+ million on the chance they accept the QO? As a dodger fan I loved both of them but they aren’t worth that much.
Knowthemarket
Who would have thought you could move Kemp? He was moved from the Padres..he was moved from the Braves. It has been done with his contract constantly getting spread out.
User 4245925809
Agree Cereal. Think Kemp’s 2018 semi comeback was more of an aberration also and he’ll go back to being the same old base slug with bad legs, never walks, strikes out a ton with -0- use on defense he’s been prior to last season for several years.
All Cincy got was 3 discards rather than 1 in the deal when Cincy themselves could have just released Bailey and kept their former 1st and believe it was 2nd rd picks. It’s hard to believe they did this.
thegreatcerealfamine
Also did you notice he fattened up again towards the end of the season. I believe these were two first rounders, which makes even more of a head scratcher. The Dodgers will add these guys plus one or two of their own to acquire a number three pitcher, and maybe have enough to also get Realmuto. I love the way their front office works, they’re are set to stay at the top for awhile. Oh than there’s money they shedded to go after Harper.
jdgoat
To be fair to the reds though, Kemp was only the third part of that deal and was clearly a salary dump. This deal was totally about them getting Wood and Puig for 2019 and hoping Kemp remains his 2018 self.
redsfan48
Once again, if they got another catcher, that would allow them to package Barnhart in a trade for a pitcher.
BrandonGregory74
I’m with you all the way. Trade Schebler for another arm and 2-way Lorenzen. Start Ervin in Center and sign Harrison as a bench bat
thegreatcerealfamine
Ervin doesn’t have the range for CF.
djpiglatin
2nd wildcard contenders? Rotation is trash
jdgoat
Might be a long shot but they really need at least one of Mahle, Romano, or Castillo to breakout and have Desclafani to come back strong. I’m also pretty intrigued to see what happens with Lorenzen. Wasn’t there talk about him becoming a starter this year? If he can become an above average rotation piece that’d be a pretty good upgrade. And on top of that he’s probably the second best batter among pitchers outside of Ohtani.
jchiaratti
To get wood and puig while dumping bailey? Seems pretty obvious and madBum… he’s not a better hitter than bum
jdgoat
He’s way better than Bumgarner. I’ll admit the bodies of work aren’t the same, but Lorenzens average and obp are about 80 points better and the power isn’t even close. Lorenzens slugging is nearly .200 points higher than MadBums.
BrandonGregory74
I see Lorenzen being an opener and MR guy and a 6th OF on his off days
plem
Castillo
Wood
Roarke
Mahle
Desclafani
That isn’t getting the other side of the equation done. Need a guy in the #1 slot bad and Schebler can only play CF in cinci vs right hander. Other parks and a lefty- he’s a liability
redsfan54
Actually Schebler hits better against lefties
BrandonGregory74
At one point last season Schebler was hitting lefties better than righties
Jason d r
They definitely need a number one starter 2-5 would be wood, Roark, Castillo, mahle/desclafani. As for the trade with LA;I like it. I think the reds are going to look at puig for an extension if he performs same with wood. Kemp should help with offense and give Taylor Trammell time to develop. I’m just glad Bailey is finally gone. It always bothered me they kept Bailey and got rid of Leake.
ffjsisk
No Reds fan, but I love everything about Barnhart. Every time he played against the Braves he was solid both ways. Maybe he’s underwhelming against the rest of the league, idk. The Reds have bigger holes than catcher though.
jgreen2487
He can be spotty.. he wasn’t consistent last year.. especially down the stretch.. I’m actually more of a fan of our backup Casali and feel if he had more playing time he could be the better catcher.
woody0028
Be great for a home run derby. Who is going to pitch for this “serious” contender?
jbigz12
I’d like to remind you guys the orioles won lots of games with their “ace” being Chris Tillman. Do I like the reds coming out of that division? No. But don’t be dismissive of a below average rotation. The brewers don’t have much of a rotation themselves. I don’t think Reds have the same bullpen the orioles did during their run or the great infield defense but you never know.
kevnames42
The lineup was never really the problem, it’s been their pitching
krinks 2
I really don’t get the bad press for the Reds. With any kind of pitching clearly the class of the NL as far as the lineup is concerned.
wrigleywannabe
What class would that be, detention?
beyou02215
Pollock hasn’t played a full season since 2015. He’s 31. I’d stop at 3 years with maybe a steep (550 PA’s) vesting clause in that third year for him to get to a 4th year.
costergaard2
Yes
bencole
Yeah, but he wouldn’t sign for that.
redsfan48
He might for a premium AAV.
bigdaddyt
Well thats a sad realization for the jays management system that maybe these guys should have been traded years ago when they had insane value and everyone knew they weren’t going to win anymore. Now the jays have a bunch of old players or guys with diminished value that even if traded won’t fetch any kind of exciting return. When pillar and smoak are the best trade chips it shows the sad state of the organization. But thank god we have Vald.JR who for some reason people think we be able to field 8 positions and toss the odd pitch here and there.

MuleorAstroMule
As long as he has a 25 WAR season everything will be fine.
jekporkins
Pollock is obviously stoned. I have a feeling he is this year’s Mike Moustakas, thinking he’s going to run the market but the market will run him. Call me crazy but I don’t get the appeal of a guy who is past his prime, constantly injured, had one good year, and asking for a six-year deal.
bradthebluefish
Agreed all around.
seanwh01
JD Martinez will be in this same position next year after he gets hurt and doesn’t play a full year this season. Great player often hurt just like Pollock
braves25
This wouldn’t apply to JD Martinez. If he were to get hurt that means he stays in Boston. He has an opt out…he will not be a free agent unless he opts out.
lasershow45
Uhhh…. JD has been a legit threat at the plate for 5 straight years now, is under contract for 4 more years, and has already achieved a 5 year deal.
Sooooo he’s really in the exact opposite position.
arc89
Pollock wouldn’t be talking 6 years if somebody hasn’t already offered him 4 year deal. Comparing Pollock to JD is not realistic since JD is one of the top hitters in baseball and Pollock is a good hitter with good defense. Pollock will never be the hitter JD is.
Jonthunder
JD has been injury prone and is horrible defensively, but AJ’s recent offense hasn’t been steadily excellent like Martinez.
wrigleywannabe
Pollock’s offense is nowhere near Martinez’s
123,158,120,119 and 150 Martinez
75,157,12,112,113 Pollock
That’s games played over the last five years.
Who’s injury prone, again.
seanwh01
Missing 40 games a year 3 out of the last 5 years is not the definition of heathy. Not as bad as Pollock for sure. “Just like him” was hyperbole and a stretch….which fits right in to the style of comments on these boards. Glad my comments stirred you up, that was the point. Didn’t mean to make you go to all that work of looking up stats though….that was just icing on the cake.
seanwh01
Pollock was on his way a few years ago before the injuries hit. I think he could have been, but your right he won’t be now.
zedisdead
It all depends on the next move. One trade/one FA signing. They either trade for Kluber or Realmuto, sign Keuchel or Grandal. Maybe Pollock if he would go to 4 years, but clearly they are looking at cost certainty with the trades ( no long term deals). Kluber is cheap for the next three years (relatively), they would have to pay more to Keuchel for longer period, so preferred route would be trade for Kluber, sign Grandal for 4 years…
gocincy
I think you’re talking about the Reds. I love Kluber, but I’d prefer not to trade 1-2 top prospects for him. That’s why Kuechel is appealing to me. He will cost more money, but we’d keep prospects. That makes him cheaper. I acknowledge that Kluber is the better pitcher.
Samuel
Kuechel is a risk, but all FA pitchers are. Most are overpays, those that go unsigned for a while can be good values if the other teams interested have moved on to other FA’s or Pitchers via trades.
Kuechel is nice from the Reds viewpoint. A soft-contact junk pitcher can lose speed off his pitches yet still remain effective, while it can derail a pitcher that depends on speed. Age 31 to 35/36 is not old for that type of pitcher. What kills them is when they lose pinpoint control too often.
Kuechel is going to get a lot of ground balls and the Reds infield D is good (Astros was superior). He’s a better bet to keep the ball in the yard then most pitchers -the biggest downside of pitching in GABP – as the proverbial wily veteran he stands a very good chance of making adjustments necessary to win in that park.
Might be a good fit all around.
gocincy
I couldn’t have said it better
redsfan48
At this point, Pollock is entirely unnecessary for the Reds. The money would be much better spent on pitching or Grandal.
seanwh01
Agree, reds have good outfield prospects, better to pay for pitching or a catcher.
GB85
Jays are in a sad state right now – not because they’re not planning on contending, but because they obviously need pitching and a lot of these decent, mid-rotation arms are being signed for 9 and 10 million per year. Anibal, Cahill, etc, would be totally fine for a year or two at that price, and could possibly be flipped at the deadline for someone half decent if the stars align. Instead, crickets.
jimmertee
Crickets. lol. Made my day.
SuperSinker
Why not go through your internal options and give several pitchers the opportunity to sink or swim? Why sign decline-phase veteran stop gaps?
jdgoat
I’m holding out hope for Miley or Pomeranz, who likely won’t cost near as much as the others. Sanchez made no sense at that price but I agree on Cahill.
The reality is though that with pitchers of this caliber, it’s really all just guesswork and luck. Just look back an offseason ago at the comparable pitchers. Garcia, Cashner, Vargas, Lynn, Liriano, and Pineda either provided barely any value or none at all. The only ones who really did were Mikolas and Fiers. I believe they will take the risk though and it does make sense to make the 10 million dollar chance. Especially since they have at least one open rotation spot up for grabs.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Sonny
Gray
jdgoat
No thanks, especially if legit prospects are needed. If he tanks again next year, take the cheap shot on him in free agency. If he rebounds, just give him the 3-4 year deal that he’ll command.
Michael Chaney
I think Pollock is a great fit for the Indians on paper, but at that point, they should have just brought back Brantley.
Pollock will likely cost a lot more and comes with a draft pick, while having some of the same injury concerns that Brantley does. Pollock’s upside is definitely higher, but they could have theoretically saved a ton of money and brought back a known commodity instead.
Indiansjoe
To expensive, I’d rather stick with Martin and Allen while waiting for zimmer to get healthy and rebound
Michael Chaney
I agree that he’s too expensive and I don’t really want the Indians to sign him unless it comes at a steep discount.
That said, I’m also not willing to just stick with Martin and Allen and wait on Zimmer. There are a few intriguing names, but their current outfield is nowhere close to where it should be for a team hoping to seriously contend. They need an addition soon.
Samuel
The Indians are big on OBP, and Pollock’s is historically sub-standard.
Then add in the risk of injury, the long-term contract, and the dollar amount. I can’t see the Indians taking a chance here. They have a platoon – Martin/Allen – that can chase down balls in CF for a lot less money.
It’s a RH run-producing bat that they need. The article says Anjuhar is available. He’s young and cheap. The Indians traded their projected 3B last week. Perfect.
thegreatcerealfamine
Even if the Yankees were to trade Andujar and sign Machado they would still need to adress the SS hole, LH BP arm, and another LH bat in the everyday lineup. Would they be able to fill two of those holes with the Andujar return?
bronxbombers99
you never know what’s up Cashman’s sleeve
vmmercan 2
Signing someone like lowrie would solve two of those problems after trading andujar. And they may also go after Britton who apparently loves Machado. Signing a reliever has always been on the Yankees radar regardless of Machado and andujar’s futures.
If they get Machado, it’s very likely cash has a location for andujar in a deal for a sp, and also likely he can move gray for a reliever and sign lowrie and Britton.
Even doing all that probably puts the Yankees right around the first tax threshold after Arb.
arc89
The trade that should happen is trading Andujar and Frazier to the Giants for Crawford, watson, and Smith. Crawford is a gold glove SS that can hit some and Smith is a good lefty out of the pen. This would give the yanks a killer bullpen and a good SS for a few years. Of course the giants think they can compete instead of going into a rebuild mode for the future.
thegreatcerealfamine
That isn’t enough for those guys.
jbigz12
Crawford has very little surplus value on his contract. Did you see what Jean Segura fetched? If you got andujar for all 3 of those guys you should feel pretty good as a Giants fan. Let alone have the yanks add anything else.
driftcat28 2
That would be a terrible trade for the Yankees to make
billysbballz
That will never happen and is an awful trade for the Yanks. Here’s my counter since your trade was so bad. Andujar by himself for Bumgardner one year left and 2 top 5 prospects such as Shaw and Anderson.
Adam6710
With Machado in the fold, a glove-only shortstop will be something they can absorb, and can be easily found. Zach Britton and David Robertson are still available, as is Ottavino.
Andujar could also be moved to fill more than one spot, including one of the ones you mention.
billysbballz
If the Yanks are dealing Andujar for possibly a legit big time pitcher then they should without a doubt sign Harper and Machado! I know that sounds crazy but we are trading Andujar bat away and replacing him with a big bat in Machado but still not addressing not having any real decent LH bats in the lineup besides Hicks. Bird can’t be counted on until he proves otherwise and Didi might be out a big part of the season. We lost out on Daniel Murphy and while I have a good feeling that the ss position will be filled by Edwin Gonzalez I still think we need Harper.
Begamin
Can someone explain the dire need for more LH batters? In theory I can see why having a balance if LH and RH hitters would be good, but when the Yankees scored the 2nd most average runs per game last season (with significant injuries to a lot of their better hitters), I just do not see the acquisition of a LH hitter being imperative towards their success for next season. I just think it is currently a small issue being blown out of proportion. At the end of the day, the offense is still one of the best in the league. I dont see the need to panic over the LH/RH hitter imbalance
Samuel
@ Begamin;
I will……..
Guys like Stanton, Judge, Sanchez, Glaybor, Anjuhar/Machado, and Voit hit LH pitching far better the RH pitching.
Without LH balance, opposing teams will only start their best LH pitchers against the Yankee. Come bullpen time, they’ll only use a LH pitcher to throw to an LH batter – once a RH batter steps in and is announced, the opposing manager will bring in another RH pitcher.
– – –
As for more hitting – I’ve written all offseason that the Yankees hitting was fine in 2018. It was their starting pitching depth, tired/overused bullpen, and terrible use of pitchers by Boone that kept them from a championship.
Begamin
+Samuel
Right, I get that. I mean my point was that even with a RH heavy lineup and major injuries last year, they still had the 2nd best offense. My question was why everyone is freaking out over the LH/RH imbalance as if the Yankees arent hitting well. If the Yankees had the 15th best offense, then I’d be pushing to even out the imbalance. But with the 2nd most runs scored on average per game, I just dont think the imbalance is as big a deal as people are making it out to be.

terror661
I wouldn’t sign him for nothing. Dude is toxic and is all about himself.
jchiaratti
Guarantee if he was toxic the A’s wouldn’t have made an offer to being him back… he’s just betting on himself without evaluating his own performance… hardly “toxic”
Ski to Coors
Gives me a little confidence Iannetta may be considered a neutral value at 4M if they acquire a better catcher.
hojostache
This make K Plawecki look like a steal at $1.3m in his first year or arbitration. He is low-avg to avg overall, but that actually has value bc of how thin catcher is in the league and how inexpensive he is with 4 yr of control in hand.
HalosHeavenJJ
I really hope Grandal ends up in Anaheim. The fit is so obvious and perfect.
imindless
I think jed lowrie should be on there short list too very underated super utility that can play 2nd or 3rd and is a switch hitter.

Lucroy will never win a title. Lol. Dude is such a d bag.
Lefty Grove’s right hand
Take a look in the mirror if you want to see a d bag. Only a d bag makes a commit like that.
A'sfaninLondonUK
To quote Lucroy (from Aug 22nd 2018) talking about the Athletics & taken from Dallas News site…
” The best quality of this team is not the talent,” Lucroy said Tuesday. “It’s the chemistry. The chemistry in this room is pretty special.
“When I arrived, along with the other veterans they pulled off the scrap heap, they accepted us. We’re all running together. A bunch of rejects in Oakland, all having a good time.”
Does that sound like the words of a toxic d bag?
(IMHO) A lot of the A’s success in 2018 was down to Lucroy being able to call a game through to the lights out bullpen. His bat was quiet, his framing was ok, but his personality was huge.
Given his morning conversation to Bob Melvin went something like…
JL “Morning Bob, who’s starting today?”
BM “Jonathan – we’ve got a few options – there’s Ervin Silvester for one…”
JL “I’ve not heard of Ervin – is he a trade?”
BM “No he’s a 59 year old whisky salesman – he pitched 26 innings of AA ball in 1987.”
JL “Sounds nasty – could leave you with a headache”
BM “Thank you Jonathan but the back office are responsible for the jokes in Oakland. We’re also considering Trixie the performing seal – have you seen her flip a beachball?”
JL “No, I’m a bit busy most days.”
BM “And we’re considering you & your knuckle stuff”
JL “Me – who would catch?”
BM “You would. You might have to put a bit of extra height on it – but essentially we figure you could scoot behind the mound and we could play an extra outfielder… Or infielder. We’ve not decided yet.”
OK – slight exaggeration – especially about Trixie because she doesn’t like being out of water for long and – accordingly – only pitches in relief, but in essence Lucroy was a crucial part of the A’s equation last year. I’d sign him for similar money in a heartbeat….
jimmertee
The Blue Jays Shapiro tends to value his own players greater than everyone else. What does that tell us?
What did we get for Donaldson, Bautista, and Encarnacion, Pompey, Estrada and Happ? Not much. [Merryweather and Mckinney are spare parts and not core players]. Held on to these players way too long.
So what are we going to end up with for Travis, Pillar, Stroman, Sanchez, Smoak, Giles?
I find it very difficult to trust Shapiro and Atkins. Dombrowksi took 2 years not 5 to rebuild the MLB level RedSox, Cashman the same with the Yankees.
The Jays need an elite GM.
Sigh.
imgman09
You forgot that it took Dombrowski ten years to get to WS with the Tigers and he lost, its a crapshoot,it’s not just the GM,there are so many more factors and one is Baseball Luck!
adshadbolt1
I think it’s hilarious how jays fans hated on AA because he went out and made moves when they had a chance to win and they thought the savior was here when Shapiro arrived and now all they do is hate on Shapiro

Don’t forget Nate Pearson who is a top prospect.
jdgoat
And how on earth do you think Dombrowski rebuilt anything? He took over in mid 2015 and didn’t miss the playoffs once. Cherington is the one who left that core and farm to trade which set them up. Your infatuation with “elite” front office personnel is kind of odd. It’s literally only guys who are able to cover up their teams big mistakes and holes due to money.
alc47
In my opinion pollock is worth two year plus a mutual option for the third, if you gets anything more it’s a bad decision by the team that signs him.
Yankeepatriot
I love how andujar’s defense is trashed daily and yet every team is interested in him and every fan on these mlb boards puts him in their trade proposals lol.

you can say that about most players.

Throw in your Cubs as another team that wouldn’t want him.

The concerns about Andujar’s defense probably comes from rival executives trying to minimize his trade value.

alc47
That’s part of it but ask any hardcore fan and they’ll tell you the same thing, his defense is terrible.

I’m a season ticket holder, make it to at 40 games a year. ( sit on the third base side ) His defense wasn’t as bad as everyone seems to say. No Brooks Robinson…however, he’ll get better in my humble opinion!!
alc47
He’s one of my favorite players in baseball and I’m a mets fan. But I disagree his defense is very bad, however he has a great mentality and from what I hear he’s been working hard to improve on his defense. Hopefully he can turn it around.
lasershow45
I dunno X…. He got pulled in the Wildcard game, got pulled in game 2 of the ALDS, and didn’t even play in game 5….
I know he didn’t hit in the division series, maybe that’s why they played Walker at third in game 4 facing a righty.
But to me, the Yankees didn’t have that much faith in him to begin with, it’s not coming from just rival execs.
alc47
Agreed, and they’ve shown a willingness to trade him because they’re low on his defense.

I think they’re willingness is not necessarily because of his defense, but because of their interest in Machado and the fact they know he’s potentially their biggest chip in a trade for an elite starter.
They will not trade him just to trade him. Heck, you could put him at DH and move Stanton to left field.
jdgoat
Yes it comes from rival executives, and not the millions of people who watched him attempt to play defense last year…
Adam6710
Condescension aside, I believe what he’s trying to say is that if he weren’t up for trade, rival execs would be commenting on how he is still young enough to work on and improve his defense, but because he’s on the block, they’re using his poor defense as a reason to keep his value down.
jdgoat
I think it’d still be a major concern among interested teams though. It’s a big difference for an acquiring teams future if they’re getting a future third baseman, first baseman or DH. I doubt it’s a BoSox scout or whatever just trying to drum up negativity for NYY. But i guess with Heyman, who knows?
Adam6710
In 2005, Robinson Cano held a worse defensive rating than Andujar, according to FanGraphs. Their UZR’s were also quite similar. Cano actually had more errors in 17 fewer games.
The idea that he can’t improve is just plain ludicrous.
Samuel
First off, 3B is the least important position on the field. Check out the percentages a 3B has of handling the ball vs. the rest of the D.
Here are 2 recent young hitting 3B’s that were awful defenders their early years, yet turned into gold glovers….
1. Recently retired Adrian Beltre -belongs in the HOF. Watched him a lot with the Dodgers when he came up. Just terrible. Worked at it. Turned it.
2. Wade Boggs. Awful D for years. Pure hitter. Red Sox hid his glove at 3B. About 5 years in he realized he wasn’t a complete player. Worked his butt off one off-season. Came back a very good defender, continued to improve and became a Gold Glove. Probably would not have been elected to the HOF without his superior D.
Anjuhar is 23 years-old. Right now what I’m seeing is the Yankees using Anjuhar’s defensive shortcomings (hardly as bad as Sanchez’ behind the plate) as the narrative to justify a large contract to Machado.
I’m sorry, but no MLB team pays an extra $30m a year to get better D @ 3B. Yankees/Cashman have lost me. I see a Pablo Sandoval-lite situation developing…..both the attitude and the weight.
daved
Boggs was a career .328 hitter, with 8 SS awards, 12x AS, 5x batting champ, 3010 hits and a career .415 OBP. He could have been Herman Munster fielding at 3B and he was a lock for the HOF. The guy was elected on the 1st ballot with 92% of the vote, and he only won 2 GG awards, which I believe, GG are the most overrated and subjective/goofy award ever invented.
wrigleywannabe
Yet, the Yankees seem eager to move him
Adam6710
Nobody is ever EAGER to move on from a hitter like Andujar. They are however, eager to use this valuable asset, one that could very well be at a position of depth (if they sign Machado) to acquire for a position of need (rotation).
Samuel
@ Adam6710;
Nothing wrong with moving a player to fill a need at another position.
But allowing a young player – that not only finished 2nd in ROY balloting, but was arguably your teams MVP that year – to be trashed in the national media daily to a point that has the young man now has a reputation with the public as a clanky-glover, is simply uncalled for. It is classless on behalf of the Yankees to not step in here.
Sanchez as a Catcher misses pitches literally every game, and he’s not very competent coming out for bunts either. But every time talk of his crummy D comes up (far, far worse then Anjuhars’) – it’s Cashman and his manager telling the media that every thing’s fine.
It’s one thing to make an excuse to justify to the fans and media why you are going to overpay for a questionable free agent to replace a rookie. But Cashman has been around long enough to have seen dozens of quality rookies lose confidence and had their careers ruined by this sort of innuendo. This has been totally classless behavior on the part of the Yankees. Didi is losing his 2nd buddy on the team. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him sign elsewhere next year.
Adam6710
I don’t see him being trashed in the media, I see him being trashed in the comments section.
In fact just a week or so ago Cashman was asked about him being traded, and he said:
“Andujar is part of a young nucleus of players that we’re excited about. We don’t get to 100 wins without the booster rockets of Andujar and [Gleyber] Torres at second and third last year. They really propelled us in the second half and hit that win column all the way to 100.”
Samuel
@ Adam6710;
I see Andujar being trashed in the national sports media at least 3 times a week. ESPN. MLB.COM. Stat sites.
I watched at least 50 Yankee games this year. His defense turned one game I remember. Sachez was injured a lot, yet I still saw him turn at least 4 games with his D.
I’ve read a number of comments on here from Yankee season ticket holders saying they saw Andujar play quite a bit, and his defense was not much worse then many of the other players.
The media in this country stopped reporting the news decades ago. They want to influence and indirectly make the news. They push their favorites, and mercilessly pile on those they don’t like or those that are in the way. The national sports media wants Manny Machado on the Yankees so badly that they started pushing it around June. Young Mr. Andujar is in the way, and the assault is on.
Any baseball person watching/scouting the games will tell you that Devers was as bad a 3B, and very probably worse. Yet the Red Sox won a championship.
This endless ragging on Andujar’s defense is way over the top and totally uncalled for. But it’s the only way to justify signing Machado, so who cares if the kids career is ruined.
Insert “Be careful what you wish for” to Yankee fans that are eating this nonsense up.

Mark Shapiro as Grand Moff Tarkin.
Rich Hill’s Elbow
They don’t even need Realmuto/Grandal, the Reds are better off rolling with Barnhart/Farmer and signing Pollock to play CF, and then move Schebler for pitching. When it comes to pitching though, they still have plenty of time to sign Miley, Gonzalez, or S. Miller (not Keuchel).
rdsfan05
I tend to agree here except depending on the price for grandal If it’s in that 10 to 15 for three or four might be a risk worth taking or if the reds can fleece Realmuto for Barnhart and India+ I’d see what happens
redsfan48
Farmer is MiLB depth. Curt Casali is Barnhart’s backup
zedisdead
Grandal/Realmuto lengthen the lineup. They can trade Barnhart for RP/SP help (or prospects), more likely they try to trade Kemp to AL team as a DH (picking up )$10-12 mil in salary to make it attractive). Schebler is starting CF right now. My bet is preferred structure (if they can make it work) is Kluber/Grandal , sign a back-up CF (Plenty of options available for cheap, Span, Jay, Young, Jackson). Keuchel & Pollock right now are to expensive & want more years. Catcher market is somewhat set (w/Ramos signing) my guess is they might could get Grandal 3/$50? , Kluber will be costly , but if they can do all this and keep Senzel & Hunter Greene , and add the $40 mil in Salary they discuss, they will have achieved everything they probably dreamed to accomplish this offseason….
daved
Willie Jay should NOT be an option for any team other than one in Japan or Korea.
daved
Dear AJ Pollock, you can s–t in one hand and wish in the other. Let’s see which hand fills up first. Bottom line, you ain’t getting no stinkin’ 6 year deal.
mack22 2
I’ll always be a Dodger fan but will pull for the Reds this year as well.
cscd1111
The Phillies should make a low ball offer for Miguel Andujar, at the same time continue to jack the cost for Machado, until the Yanks cut him loose. If the rumors are correct and Machado wants to play for the Yanks anyways, you come away with a third base of the future, and save a lot of cash for another asset?
jbigz12
The Yankees have no need to take a low ball offer. I doubt the two of them could find common ground on an andujar trade regardless. The Yankees need starters and the Phillies really don’t have any quality surplus to offer up.
billysbballz
Why would cashman sell low on Andujar because the Phillies make a low ball offer?
Lmao stop
cscd1111
I’m not sure why you think this idea is funny perhaps you should read the Art of the deal. If the rumors are true, and I’m not convinced they are and Machado prefers the Yankees over the Phillies, Accepting a lowball offer for Miguel Andujar could save the Yankees millions of dollars in the long run?
jdgoat
What?

@cscd
What? Go read the book again or read a better book!
I do not know where to start going off on you on that comment so rather than going real negative I will just say that I also am laughing at how silly that comment of yours is.
JKB 2
@cscd
Ok I have to ask. Can you enlighten us on how giving away Andujar is a good idea.
After all you say the Yanks will save millions right? Well how is that?
By accepting garbage back so they do not have to pay Andujar millions in the future? Lmao
Hey in that case should the Yankees just cut Andujar? After all that will save them millions in the future!
Maybe they should cut Judge too?? Haha hey it would save millions in the future!
Or hey maybe the Yankees would just trade Andujar for good players or prospect (not low ball) to any number of teams that would be bidding to get him?
Naw they will just give him to the Phillies on a low ball offer instead. Lol. What chapter of the book is that?
Adam6710
Hey, if they cut the whole team and play a fruit basket at every position, they’ll save even more!
sasafrass81
I have heard sources say that there is an orange down on the farm that’s just about ripe enough to come up to the bigs. This orange might be a great center piece for SS or even bundled in a basket…um…package and shipped to Cleveland for Kluber or this delicious looking pomegranate that is still weeks away from reaching AAA or send to Atlanta for a peach.
This paragraph that I just typed out while high on Nyquil makes more sense than what R2-D2 or CSCD: Miami typed out…low ball Cash and the Yankees because? Does Philly have some sort of Jedi trance on the Yanks?
What’s going on? If I’m commenting on a post…..then someone is acting a fool. I mean it’s Christmas for crying out loud! Go be jolly! Art of the Deal my azz!!!
JKB 2
Billysbballz
I too am LMAO with you on this one!
JKB 2
@cscd
Why make a low ball offer on Andujar? It accomplishes nothing since Cashman is not an idiot.
Thus you do not come away with your 3rd baseman of the future.
Now why are the Phillies going to “jack the price” for Machado? How does that work? Phillies just keep raising their offer? Well suppose Machado days yes to some insane offer?
You are not jacking the price on Cashman. Cashman will offer what he wants. Yanks are not chasing Machado at ant price.
wrigleywannabe
And what does jacking it up a year or 10 million do to hurt NY? Nothing
driftcat28 2
I’d prefer the yanks keep Andujar and move him to 1B and then try to Machado for 3B. Andujars bat is too good and that lineup is lethal with both guys + The rest of them
Adam6710
I agree, but if someone bowls them over with an offer you’d have to take a look.
jtkuch
Huntington almost never gets that pissed over a rumor, which likely means it was true and he’s trying to save face.
johnnyringofwc
If any team should explore the idea of a bullpen guy as opener, it’s the Reds, even with the new pitching additions considering that park. Play matchups and get a good bench group. They might be missing Billy right now if they would have used him right off the bench each game.
wrigleywannabe
The right way, as in making sure the bats were in the right spots?
kster224488k
If I were the Braves I would pass on Pollock and find a trade partner asap..it’s getting late, we still need a RF..hello Brewers, Rangers, Padres..etc
Drew Waters Bat
What about a deal for Andujar,Stanton for Dansby Swanson, Sean Newcomb. Opens up a spot and money for Harper. Sure it would take more from the Braves to offset some of Stantons money. Andujar could move to short or 2nd. If his defense is bad I’m sure it’s nothing Ron Washington can’t wrinkle out flat. Get the far better defense at short with Swanson with a bat that should play up at Yankee stadium. Along with Newcomb. The Braves have the pitching prospects that the Yankees want.
kster224488k
Dansby ain’t going nowhere..thank God AA has enough sense to not move him nor Camargo..Dansby has only began to touch his potential with the bat, and his glove work is phenomenal.
Samuel
Yes……
Notice the difference between the way the Braves organization is standing by a young infielder having some problems; and the way the Yankees are distancing themselves from a better, younger player having less problems and telling the posse where to drive the bus to run down their player
The Braves are running a class operation.
Adam6710
Yankees don’t want prospects, and certainly not for two all-star power hitters. And Newcomb is not the ace they want to get for Andujar.
And what makes you think Andujar could move to 2nd or SS, two positions he’s never played?
alien
Dream on Pollock with his 6 yrs fantasy!
dust44
Reds need pitching. Right now it’s nice they have actually made a move to get some real hitters. Still don’t have a Centerfielder tho. And right now there 1-3 in the rotation r Roark, Wood and DeSclafani. That’s a decent 3-4-5 in the rotation. Now an inspiring top. Now if they can overpay to go get Kueicle and trade Barnhart and Schenler and some prospects for one of the Jays 2 then we will talk. Right now they will have to score 8 runs+ with that staff. That’s not to mention the only 2 guys in the pen r Iglesias and Lorenzen. Other then them there’s a list of cast off young starters who got lit up when given the chance to start.
RePete
Bullpen also has Hughes, Hernandez, Garrett, etc. Don’t sell them short.
bobtillman
Count me in as being mystified as to what the Jays are doing. It seems they’re content to tread water until their reasonably decent farm system bubbles up. But by that time, the “super” teams (Boston, NY) will have also made moves. And oh ya, the Rays…….
They have gobs of money; you’d think they’d at least LOOK like they’re trying to accomplish something. With 3M in attendance, a huge TV contract (self-generated), and what seems as virtually no debt, they just stand there.
Sometimes looking at them I think the Orioles will be competitive before they are.
Samuel
bob;
You have a lot to learn about Mark Shapiro.
To start with – he seldom does more then one thing at a time.
If Francona had not gone to Cleveland, Shapiro and Antonetti would still be looking at statistical data and trying out this years fad theory with the quality players asking their agent to demand a trade after they – like the rest of the team (and the fans) – got tired of being run around in circles for years.
The only hope the Jays have is if ownership puts Shapiro and his Ivy League MBA staff on probation, forcing them to listen to a baseball lifer manager.
its_happening
To add to Samuel’s point….
Rogers is reluctant to go for the knockout punch when needed. They along with Shapiro set self-imposed max payrolls to hinder the 2015-17 teams from going over the top when they needed to do so to win the World Series.
Now, the Blue Jays are still late to every party when it comes to contending AND rebuilding. Mystified is the most appropriate word to describe the Toronto situation.

I think AA needs to make a move for Stroman. With the Braves defense behind him and pitching in the NL I think he would turn it around

Andújar and Bird to the Mets for Syndegaard. Voit at first. Sign Machado and Tulowitki to play 3rd and SS, respectively. And, wait for Didi to return!

Alright, would someone compile all of thegreatcerealfamine’s comments for a coffee table book? I have never run across someone with such a….unique paradigm. My favorites:
– He’s confident the Dodgers will “stay on top” which is apparently what you call a 30-year World Series drought
– He doesn’t understand why the Reds would 3 players who couldn’t make their roster for the foreseeable future in return for their new best starter and outfielder
– He can’t understand how they were able to get rid of Kemp while only taking on a worse player with a worse contract and also giving millions of dollars and two other major leaguers.
