With not much likely to happen in the way of U.S. baseball transactions today, we’ll turn an eye to some locations overseas…
- The quality of talent in Bahamian baseball is on the rise, writes MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. To date, only six players from the Bahamas have played in the major leagues, including Antoan Richardson, the player who famously crossed the plate for the walk-off run Derek Jeter drove in during his final MLB at-bat. However, as many as fifteen players across MiLB’s 30 farm systems come from the Bahamas. Notably, Kristian Robinson currently ranks as the Diamondbacks’ 12th-best prospect, while Trent Deveaux and D’Shawn Knowles are among the Angels’ top 30 minor-leaguers. Lucius Fox, another Bahamian native (and a former $6MM international signing by the Giants), batted .326 in the Arizona Fall League and projects to open the 2019 season with the Rays’ Double-A Affiliate. Perhaps the most intriguing name on the list of Bahamian prospects is Jazz Chisholm, who’s ranked as the Diamondbacks’ third-best farmhand by MLB Pipeline.
- Kazuto Yamazaki of Baseball Prospectus suggests that a “wave” of Nippon Professional Baseball talent could make its way to MLB next year, and lists their names in a tweet. Left-handed-hitting outfielder Shogo Akiyama is reportedly set for international free agency, while Takahiro Norimoto, Yoshitomo Tsutsugo, and Ryosuke Kikuchi are all probable candidates to be made available through NPB’s posting system. Japan, of course, as produced plenty of high-end MLB talent in recent seasons, including Masahiro Tanaka and Shohei Ohtani. Yusei Kikuchi, who was just posted earlier this month, is the NPB’s most interesting player to make the jump to MLB this winter.
- Per Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston, a longtime Astros scout has taken a job with a Korean Baseball Organization team. Aaron Tassano, who’s also done legwork for the Cubs and Rays, is now the scouting coordinator for the KBO’s Samsung Lions, for whom he’ll now be trying to pluck talent from MLB farm systems. Drellich’s piece compiles some interesting quotes from Tassano that help form a picture of how KBO teams might make their pitches to certain MLB players and their agents.

Am I the only one that didn’t remember the final run Derek Jeter drove in? Is that play really considered famous? It’s not like it is that flip getting Jeremy Giambi out in the playoffs or something.
pinstripes17
You don’t know baseball then
ReverieDays
Or not everyone cares about a guy who had 3000 singles and plays for the most hated team in baseball.
pinstripes17
Derek Jeter is the best player of the 21st century other than Trout, your loss.
baseballpun
Hahaha.
hiflew
Derek Jeter wasn’t even the best player on the Yankees in the 21st century. And he is considered the worst defensive player of the 21st century. You’re deluded.
lowtalker1
I think if anything
Ichiro has more singles then jeter
lowtalker1
No way there are worst short stops out there
But do you know how rare it is for a short stop to have career numbers like that?
As great of a defensive wizard Ozzie was I think he was a .262 hitter
Prior to jeter the last 3000 hitter at short was Ripken jr
Codeeg
Alex Rodriguez was a better shortstop than Jeter at short in their final season.
Mojo2929
Agreed. He is a future first-ballot hall of famer. He is hardly the worst defensive SS of the 21st century.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Mariano 2019
Jeter 2020

They weren’t all singles,
3000th was a home run hit off David Price
finished that day with five hits in five at-bats, second player ever to hit a HR for 3,000th hit, joining Wade Boggs in 1999.
Overall, ended his career with 260 home runs. Jeter’s a HOF player, should get more respect
Polish Hammer
And if he played in KC or Milwaukee he’d have been a “nice” player but not HoF worthy.

I remember watching it, I just have no clue who the guy who scored was.
A'sfaninLondonUK
Yes – you’re not the only one that doesn’t remember it because his last at bat was three days later….
His last at bat was at Fenway in the 3rd inning and he was pulled from the game immediately afterwards. I was headed to Oakland and stopped on the way in Boston especially for that series (thinking when I planned the trip in March it might decide the AL East)… Both teams chose to have a down year!
His famous walk off was in his last regular season game at Yankee Stadium about 3 days earlier against the Orioles…The Yanks had a three game set to in Boston to finish their year…

Awesome to see baseball is on the rise in the Bahamas.

A little odd Jamaica is not following along with all the other countries surrounding it that love baseball. Only Jamaican I can think of is Chili Davis I think.

Haiti too, sharing an island with the DR. Heck, also surprised it hadn’t caught on in Mexico

Not that odd. Haiti and Jamaica have considerably different cultural histories (a combination of colonial Masters and relative circumstance for indepence that i am not trying to analyze, just draw some attention to) than a lot of the other countries in the region. And a lot less historical American influence.
Jamaica and the bahamas had close ties with Britain for a long time, so no real surprise baseball was never that big historically
Lefty Grove’s right hand
Yeah, that definitely makes sense.

Not surprised. Dominican Republic almost a state!!
In 1867, during President Andrew Johnson, administration, Dominican Republic under threat Haitian invasion, asked to be annexed by the U.S.
In 1869 a treaty was drawn up to make DR a state;
1870, Senate defeated treaty by a vote of 28 to 28
Lefty Grove’s right hand
Thank you for that historical reference. Really, I love history. I remember reading about that too.
pustule bosey
it actually has more to do with mlb, they have an easier path to creating academies in the dr both because of politics and the fact that they have built an engine in the nation that produces baseball players from childhood
Polish Hammer
Also has something to do with their body types, you don’t see many Polynesian MLB stars either.
layventsky
If I remember correctly, Devon White was also Jamaican. Also, Justin Masterson was born in Jamaica (his parents were doing missionary work in Jamaica when he was born).

Difficult but to crack – cricket has a stronghold in Jamaica as the sport of choice.

I love the Bahamas’ geography as a country.
Country of more than 700 islands. That’s bad @ss

Maybe someone will sign him as a shortstop.

I’m not sure where all the players in Bahamian Baseball come from, but if they’re all from the Bahamas itself, I wouldn’t expect more than a few prospects as the population for the Bahamas is only 600,000 total. If MLB is finding top tier talent with any regularity down there, it would seem like they’d have to be overlooking other sources in an attempt to follow a fad.
petrie000
probably a case of the some of the best athletes in the country deciding they wanted a piece of the IFA millions and focusing their training on baseball instead of other sports. It’s not really a question of MLB deciding to look at new areas as it is new areas deciding they want a piece of MLB
martras
By population, they’re not going to have the talent to interest MLB a whole lot. You’re talking about a metro area the size of Gulfport, Mississippi. I’m very skeptical there’s going to be a whole lot of MLB interest level talent from such a small group of athletes as elite baseball players are usually blessed with god given talent which is extremely difficult to teach, if possible at all.
lesterdnightfly
As an historical note:
Andre Rodgers was really the first MLB player from the Bahamas, in the ’50s and ’60s. He had to change his swing from a cricket swing to a baseball swing. He became the Cubs’ starting shortstop when Ernie Banks moved to First Base.
Andre had a decent career with the Cubs, Giants, and Pirates.
clrrogers 2
The Japanese players listed here look interesting. I know you can’t be sure just by looking at their stats from the NPB, but they look good enough to be productive major leaguers, with the possible exception of Ryosuke Kikuchi. A career .704 OPS in the NPB may only translate to a utility role in MLB. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how heavily they’re sought after if they get posted next offseason.
kdevry
BBREF says Akiyama is 5’0″ 182lbs??? I have never heard of such a build!
MetsYankeesRedSox
Freddie Patek on steroids??

Patek was a “towering” 5’5″!!
aussiegiants53
How about some notes from the ABL? Pete Kozma playing for the Perth Heat, Delmon Young for the Melbourne Aces, Gift N’Gope playing for the Sydney Blue Sox. The comp was expanded to 8 teams this year with Geelong Korea and Auckland Tatura being included. Crowds are certainly getting better, competition is getting stronger
Doug S.
The next MLB expansion: Caribbean League…
Cuba,
Puerto Rico,
Dominican Republic,
Bahamas
& Mexico
So many reasons it won’t work, but so many reasons it would work! Baseball having the ability to change economic growth and connect North America and the Islands! Just a little pipe dream.
Polish Hammer
Their winter leagues can’t survive, no way they could support MLB. Main reason why the Marlins are a AAAA franchise…lets put a team in Little Havana they love baseball, yup they do but aren’t going to pay that kind of $$$$$ to take the family to the ballpark.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Dumb idea I think but not as dumb as MLB playing Yanks/Sox three games series in London.
Two games…my bad.
